- Hi guys! Last week we brought home a Peugeot 403 and a Citroen Traction Avant from a nearby estate auction... Time to see if the will start, run, or possibly even move? I didn't know anything about these cars when I bought them, so anything is possible! We'll also check in on Laura's 1962 Rover 3-Litre as it gets ready for paint, and there's always time for a "Team Meeting" in the new Citroen, whether it runs or not!
Thanks to everyone who ordered a "T" shirt... They are on their way now!
The new CWMC 2024 Calendar is now on sale! Order yours today at:

42:35 Poor Frankers! She wanted to go for a ride!
* Scott, Sorry buddy but momma caught me ordering a calendar ! She told me in no uncertain terms that fifty two is way too much to spend on one. Then she grounded me from your channel for two weeks 😡 I had to sneak on to watch this vid. Dude it isn't easy being married to the same woman for 42yrs but "Happy Wife Happy Life ! Sorry Again ... F*ck cleared a spot on the garage wall for it too !!!
@@Awsom47Merc Small run high quality printing/assembly/shipping
would be at least $45.00
Scott's not greedy just covering his costs and I'd bet he'll still lose money
The problem is killer inflation, money has been devalued at least 12%
This was a great episode...I saved it to watch as I recuperate from a procedure. As a matter of fact, the 403 sounds kinda like my heart did, and as I haven't heard a TA run since watching an old spy film, it was good to see this one move under its' own power. What neat cars.
I believe Tom has never said "No Cursing" without letting it fly within a matter of minutes. He is so funny. Great show.
Tom and Dean are both awesome
The flying car in the intro killed me! "Harry Potter and the junker from Alberta", in which the boy-wonder learns what a dart is, makes a Ford Y-block fly, and goes for a chips run at 2 in the morning.
Harold Poiter et le Bloc "Y" du Malheur?
"Harry! Ron has vomited poutine into the heater!"
"Tabarnac!"
"Ma faute."
Come for the intro, stay for the shenanigans...😎
Intro off the charts that was so cool ,the Shananigans the finest
IKR! The jerky tow rope! Off the scale
Tom's come a long way, from not wanting to be on camera, to making sure the camera is on! Thanks as always.
24:23 Inspector Tom
46:36 They need to get Tom to join in 😆
No Swearing LOL
My wife ordered me a calendar last week afterwards she says They’re better be pictures of his dog in it 😂
Oh you bet! Thanks for ordering one!
Nice traction ! Careful, il should be a 6 V system on this. A really revolutionnary car in 1934. Not easy to drive, the gearbox is quite fragile.
In the other hand the Peugeot 403 is a really simple and tough car.
Greetings from France
Tristan
I thought it was prewar, so stylish!
The British TV serial "Death in Paradise" has a star Peugeot 403 taxi which doesn't seem to die.
Old farm tractors (from which he borrowed the battery) are also 6 volt.
9mm "very French" LOL!
Your Citroen LWB is a jewel, a keeper. Probably the only time we would see a group smoking a spliff in the back of a Traction limousine! Great presentation!
I think you need a Simca now in the collection!!!! A nice 50's styled tailfined Simca!!!
That was so sweet when the Citroen fired right up. Frankers didn't look too happy about not getting a Peugeot ride. For cars that haven't run in several decades, that's pretty amazing. Thanks for a weekly show that's worth watching. I'd rather pay for this than cable. Cheers!
Nice to see success in the "will it runs". Im curious if the 403 parts car will run as well? You definitely need some embassy flags for the front fenders of the T.A. !
Made me laugh! Yes please to Embassy duty.
Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺 👍
Given our current leaders tendencies, perhaps some pennants from a regime a decade or so earlier..........
I love how the French cars have started to grow recently. The TA looks like such a gangster car on the road. This was a great episode!
Hi Scott, Agents and Everyone at Cold War Motors. I'm beyond overjoyed to see The Dart Girl has joined The French Automobile Recovery Team, back in action! The Big Citroen is the Staff Car Excelantee. And another exciting round of "The compression is Right." The 403 Poo-joe is just cool mpg included. The intros are fun, I'm certain the red Suzuki street bike belonged to me forty years ago. P.S. The radio in the 60 Fury looks perfect. Salute!
Cheers Wayne! Glad you enjoyed it.. All the best from me and Miss Frankers!
Wow - 100% of the auction cars (maybe 70 % of the cylinders ) fixed up; not terrible! Lady Francine looks good in the back of the TA! Thanks for another enjoyable hour - hope to see some color on the Rover next week. Cheers til next time….
An old guy at the parts store once told me they would use a test light to check for a blown head gasket. He said touch one wire to the ground post on the battery and suspend the other in the coolant without touching the radiator. The light will glow dimly from electrolysis if it has a blown head gasket, never tried it but always wondered if it would work. Also heard soaking a stiff diaphragm in boiled linseed oil will soften them up, in a pinch. Another great show, it seems like you have to be a dyslexic to operate the controls on that TA.
I think the very first time I ever saw a Traction Avant was in the 1963 From Russia with Love James Bond film. The Bulgarians used one to follow Bond around in and it had a decidedly retro look to it that was cool with the swoopy fenders and rakish grill and low slung stance.
Love the Peugeot and Citroen-Traction Avant, but that's coming from a guy whose first car was a white Renault Caravelle, and later owner of a Peugeot 504! Love the French content!
LOVE the flying car in the opening sequence!! Excellent job as usual !
Wasn't that funny?
Scott, Nomenclature for French cars is a horror and I had to find out the hard way with my Citroën AX when trying to explain my car's problem with a French mechanic to let him know that he didn't need to "discover" the problem as I already knew it, I just didn't know the term for the problem. There are many "false friends" or long word combinations in their word descriptions. The "S" is for "starter" but starter in French automobile terms means "Choke". The real starter is called "Le démarreur". The clutch is called "L' embrayage" , the turn signal is "le clingnotant", the horn is Le "Klaxon" (that one is easy), the accelerator is also easy it's "L'accélérateur", the gear shifter is "Le Levier de Vitesse", The gear box or transmission is "La Boîte de Vitesse", the brake pedal is "La pédale de Frein", the spark advance lever is "Le Levier d'Avance de Distribution", the timing chain is "la Chaîne de distribution", which is not to be confused with the timing belt which is "la Courroie de distribution" (just in case you're working on late model French cars), the spark plug is "la bougie d'allumage" or "La bougie" (meaning candle) for short, "les bougies" (plural). The muffler is "le silencieux" (literally the silencer). The headlight is "Le phare" (pronounced FAR), the taillight is "le Feu arrière", the stop light is "Le feu stop" and the back up lights are "les feux de recul (plural) one light would be feu (literally fire). So that's pretty much most of the car parts you'll need to know which may pop up in "manuels de voiture" (car manuals)
Interesting and informative. Thank You.
Tabernacl
You might add "essuie-glaces" (EG) for the wipers, "dictionnaire d'entretien" for shop manual and "reservoir d'essence" for gas tank. Also "visses platinees" for points, "freins a tambour" = drum brakes", "sabot de frein" = brake shoe and bobine d'allumage for the coil. And more, "culasse" = cylinder head, "tuyau d'echappement" = exhaust pipe, Obviously "radiateur", "piston" and "carburateur" are self-explanatory. I had a "dictionnaire" in French for my 1960 ID19. BTW the exhaust manifold is "collecteur d'echappement" , but in Quebec French, "le manifone" LOL And, "pare-brise"=windshield, "coffre a bagages" = trunk and "capot" = hood.

Bravo ! 🎯
Yes, you're right but I only listed the things that were immediate to know. One that I had forgotten was Les essuie-glaces" / wipers, which you filled in correctly. Another I'd forgotten which would immediately be needed to know would be the "Le tableau de bord" - the dashboard.
Very impressed with the ease of how you were able to get the Peugeot running, and well it is running too. I have a new found respect for old French cars now,
On the R5, have the seats cleaned the same way as the Frasier. Don't put them back in the car, as the stink is coming from the carpeting and the insulation. Let the seats air, and put dryer sheets in the springs and new car smell trees under the seats.
I was in a rough car accident Friday afternoon and hope what I typed made sense. All that carpet is worth is to use it as a pattern. Do you need some canned southern heat, a case of Sterno. Cheers, Dave Acks
Love the opening 73/74 Road runner. Your 60 Fury project inspired me to splice a 74 that was badly rear-ended with a donor . Its coming along and close to driving. Unibodies are very savable once you see it done. Thanks as always for making my evening!
I enjoyed hearing how you were surprised to see a Jag or Porsche 911 in Vancouver when you were a kid, traveling and seeing those cars for the first time. I grew up on Long Island NY in the 60's, so of course we had American Cars, but we had tons of foreign cars. Tons of Foreign car repair shops too, so seeing anything European was the norm and nothing amazing..On the street where I lived, in the neighborhood, we had, Simca, Hillman, MG, NSU, Volvo, Peogeut, Datsun, VW, Mercedes and Jags.....most people today don't even know what an NSU or Simca is!.....the first time I was amazed to see cars I never seen before was in Quebec in 1967, seeing Meteors and Plodges and Mercury Pickup Trucks, I was 7 and totally amazed at seeing them for the first time. So the story you told is relative, what you had as a kid growing up and normal was amazing for me to see for the first time! A Pontiac Parisiennne was so foreign
I grew up in the second largest city in Colorado in the late 1980's - 1990's and I hardly ever saw European cars back then. It was almost all American cars or Japanese imports. I did have an aunt with an Audi 5000 and my grandpa who was a doctor with $$ to spend had a couple Alfas and a Porsche 914, but even then his everyday cars were Lincolns or Cadillacs. That side of the family were all car enthusiasts that liked oddball stuff but still mostly drove American cars. Different markets like different stuff I guess.
Sounds like a couple burnt exhaust valves, (common prob.), rebuilt head + you might be fine. Traction avant is my fav., citroen. Never even seen limo model in the flesh. Keep goin" ,,,Izzy,,,,
What I think. Adjust the valves and retorque the head gasket.
and a bottle of K-Seal, what do you have to lose... (money back guarantee)
Here’s a vote: 403 for the winter beater challenge.
My sister had one of these and my brother and I cut the body off and ran the hell out of it in the So Cal desert years ago. That thing took a lot of abuse and always came back for more.
I recognized the Peugeot and its vintage cuz my in-laws cousins rode around in one much like this one. It was from early '60s so they told me and this was in the early '80s. They were all farmers and didn't much care about cars and rode them into the ground. Their tractors weren't much better. The bodies don't have too much rust due the lack of winters. The Renaults in the '70's had a bad reputation for using melted down scrap metal which led to supernatural rusting. We mostly bought Opel (GM). Last one was an Opel Zafira 2002. My ex is still driving that one around bless her heart. Tight fisted Bretons. Still both of these cars bring back happy memories when I was 40 years younger. Thanx gents!
Francine came along to do what she does best - steal a scene.:) Nice to see both of those Frenchies running.
A family from France had moved in next door when i was a kid. They brought all their French furniture with them and a little Peugeot just like that. Same color. They had it a long time until they moved away to ottawa. A few years later they came to town and they still had the same little car.
A trick I've learned with old carburetors if you have a diaphragm and you can take it out successfully Pat it dry with paper towel and then brush on petroleum jelly, it will help Revitalize it's pliability. Same with vinyl upholstery in both cases it helps to either put them in the Sun or warm them up.
Sweet 403! If Wikipedia is to be trusted and my memory of last week's episode is correct, the half circular horn ring puts your example somewhere prior to 1959(When the horn ring became a full circle.) Cheers!
Another Awesome episode of prancing poodles,Mega seating Citroen running and moving under it's own massive engine power, and finally we get to see a Pewgut putt the yard and prove itself as the next 'winter beater'.The massive adrenaline drainage of awaiting the sputtering power of these mighty machines has taxed me to exhaustion.Cheers !
Scott, Toy Car and slomo Frankers intro earned a big smile but the jaw dropped when the Citroen fired on stale gas and with a bit of fiddling runs on almost all 4! Holy Moses Sandals then the 403 fired and ran like a three yr old model following a swapped carb cleanout! Sounds like the valves could use a quick feeler gauge, flat blade and open end run through unless those are hydros. But before we get to the soon to be sprayed Rover, your lightening quick diagnostics on the Citroen limo IDed the head gasket for the solo jug low compression was a gob smacker! I'm betting you're spot on! Great episode including the green dart session in the limo! Cheers to all and a shoutout to Tom who lent a hand on the 403!
Should get a couple of small French flags and flag stands to put on the TA on each side of the front bumper or on the front fenders, then custom build a set of license plate frames with a larger tip or bottom section for placement of a set of emblems from a Dodge DIPLOMAT...LOL.. After all, it DOES look like it's a limousine. Yes, I have a strange sense of humor....lol
Unreal, all 3? That is hilarious! Mighty strange burning darts and sharing, how nice... 😎
Love that Canadian sky line!! ❤️
Love the new staff car! 'Bout time you all had a limo to cruise to the beer store in....
Although they look from totally different era, the Peugeot and Citroen were still very common on the roads of my childhood in the 70s in France. The SM and the DS were there too!
Great that the TA runs without having to tear in to up too deep. As you say she’s a Runner! New official French resistance car.
Got to love the bits stuck anywhere approach to automotive controls. Vive La France!
Love that 'Scotch pad' pre- air filter on the T/A.
Excellent episode! Looking forward to the first phase of painting on the Rover...Thanks for sharing Scott!!
The 403 was a pretty good score.
That audio of Tom complimenting Frankers was pure gold. She is a "good girl" and a part of the show I really look forward to. Great job on the auction cars, looking forward to finding out if it's a head gasket issue... Thanks for another great episode 👏
Thanks for the virtual ride in your TA. I'm betting on the head gasket, too. Don't know what else could cause foam when you rev it. Not related to the compression, but I couldn't help noticing that the TA has the same heater core as the DS, up through 1969.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and the gang Scott! Be sure to save room for pie
Another finely crafted video from CWM, each video is as amazing as finding an Oldsmobile diesel that actually runs.
2 for 2, most excellent. On the TA EG is essuie glace, window wipers. I admit I didn't have much to do with any of the controls on the TA I worked on, especially after looking under the dash and seeing burned wires... It had a pull to start knob too, the push button is mighty fancy (original?) The British-built version had a Conolly hide interior, I doubt it survived as well as the cloth seems to have done. Oh, and the seat bases just seem to pull out, presumably so you can sit on them and smoke Gauloise while waiting for the breakdown truck to turn up. Cheers!
Any test drive that you do not have to walk back from is a success.
I yelled "It's a runner"-my wife says "what's wrong with you"-I say "where do you want me to start"-awesome! " Thanks guys! Cheers!
Love that traction avent. Beautiful car, and I've never seen the limo over here in the UK. Reckon it's likely a head gasket causing the lack of compression, so hopefully, it's a relatively easy fix. Looks like someone kept it going for a while and put some effort into at some time. Loved the episode on the radio in the Fury and was wondering if you are going to fit the twin aerials on the rear deck. Sure would look cool! Best wishes from the UK as always ! 😊
Have to play Hogan's heroes theme song when riding in it.
What an amazing show with 3 auction French made cars actually being made to run and drive while being 40 to 60 years old with nothing but a none specific spark plug and a cleaning of a carb without even a carb rebuild kit..... Amazing is what you guys are.
Poor Frankers looked so lost when you drove away in the 403.
Wow! I'm so jealous of that TA and the 403. I'd fix up the TA mechanically and daily it. It's just an impressive machine. I remember working on a 403 back in the 80s when I lived in Memphis. It was a low mileage one, it looked new, that one of our British car customers had. We rebuilt the fuel system and brakes as it has been sitting and we were all impressed how good a car it was. It was a smooth running, riding little car. Good city car. Thanks for the video and looking forward to more on these machines! Ted
A traction avant daily driver would be awesome!
I think it's just more than the head gasket on the Citroen TA. Sounds like it may need more work but not as much as the Chevy did. No idea where you can get a head gasket to this engine? When Tom shows up, it means serious stuff is going to happen.
Peugeot 403 ran actually very decent and I was expecting it. Thing is what next? More classic dart action, heck yea.
There's a lively TA spares industry in Europe, so someone over there will know where to obtain a head gasket
Peugeot 403s were fairly common in Australia in the 60s We even had the station wagon variant. They were renowned as being very tough. I seem to recall time in the 80s when survivors were bought up and exported to Middle East where they were resold. Basically unbreakable.
Another superb chapter in the ‘CWM Tales.’ Knew it was going to be a dandy after watching Kyle’s crafty graphics at the intro. Appreciated Scott’s explanation of why Rovers - and European cars like them with a few exceptions (VW. M-B) - were scarce in North America- given too much competition from Detroit. Congrats on the excellent ‘French diagnostics’ that resulted in more runners for CWM’s lineup. Finally, happy to see the return of the Agents & Dart Girl’s impromptu imbibing/educational session in the TC. Big fun watching and listening to everyone having fun!
Love the flying thunderbird at the beginning the Citroen would make a great wedding car business and the 403 would make a great daily driver I think Columbo drove a convertible 403 👍😃
What a champ the 403 is! Love it
it would be awesome to see Tom and you have a paint off!
Another great French car re-education film! A couple more episodes and I'll lose my narrow-minded midwesterner view of the French. Here's hoping you have a very happy Canadian Thanksgiving. (I assume it's like a USA thanksgiving, but everything is metric) Cheers and all the best from the shed.
Canadian Thanksgiving--back bacon and Molson? 😆 Sounds like a good menu to me...
I never had anything against the French until I started working on old bikes now I swear they design things just to be anoying

Always knew it was time to call it a night when visions of flying T-birds appeared in my blurred vision...
Seriously, the cold opens continue to entertain, love 'em.
Good to see the Agents in attendance be of good cheer (and mending, in some cases) and the absent
ones are hoped to be doing well wherever they are.
Newest T-bucket-shirt stowed with the others for safekeeping, calendar on order, fall arriving here,
we'll hope to be here for another week - and as always, all thanks to Scott for all the efforts to give us a show!
- Ed on the Ridge
Excellent episode as always! I really like the 4dr Columbo peugeot, but I can't help but wonder if a 318 would fit in there...🤔
at 4:26 a spark is seen arcing , strange as ignition leads on opposite side, it is from the air cleaner bracket to the right of the carb. Frankers is looking really well groomed this week🙂
Keith wearing a Bauhaus shirt is full of win and made the episode so much cooler. So cool seeing those old French cars running too! Looking forward to my calendar as well! Cheers from Lubbock, take care!
I am surprised to find out that the French would use a head gasket. The air cleaner "element" looks like a Scotch Bright Pad. I hope you have a source for parts for this thing. It would be a blast to cruise around in it. The Peugeot's upper radiator hose could use an application of Flex Seal. I wonder if the gas fill is behind the lower half of the left taillight? Space Mountain is basically a Wild Mouse that operates in the dark.
So true about foreign cars being few and far between in the prairies or the north where I was born (yellowknife) My older brother who lived in Vancouver bought a new BMW 2002 in the late sixties and we thought it was the most exotic car going , I remember being so impressed by its leather interior and agile handling.
Gotta love the Thelma and Louise '66 T-bird flying in the intro!!!!
You guy HAD to fire up in that old gem! Mandatory ! Old time party van.😂
Excellent, just shows the old technology is still the best, love the Citreon Avant, looks more 1930 than 1950, presumably a pre war style that got shelved during ww2 and got started up again and was made for ten more years , the Rover looks great, lovely job.
Yes, first produced in 1934. RHD cars were also built in Slough, UK after the war.
ok, so I'm 5,6,7 years old and I see this car in all the Tin Tin Books from France ! I love this Citroen Sedan. 🤩😍🤩😍
So happy to see Both vehicles fire-up and Drive. That's awesome. All 3 'auction' cars run,and that's really a great surprise. Are you going to swap the "Ohnault's" engine into the black 1 before snow hits? Can't wait to see the paint on the Rover, but will.Cheers !
Wow! What an opening! And a flying 66 T-Bird Landau too! I am awe struck, and the show hasn't even started yet!
Very nice seeing all of these cars running! Cheers!
Great results on the cars. We live in hope. 😊
Your 403 sounds exactly like 403's do. That's a significant accomplishment, Scott.
Team Classic Darts hotboxing the Staff Car was a fun segment. Looking forward to the midweek show. Now that You have committed to Laura's One Word Review of the the Chevy i can quit pulling on Your coat sleeve about that. 😅 Thanks Scott. Best Wishes to everyone at Cold War Motors.
O la la! Tres bien!
That's the coolest TA I've ever seen! Bonus points for resisting the urge to add T tops and a screaming chicken decal to the hood!
Hi Kyle! Hey, it's not too late, now that you mention it...
3 runners, that's great. Tom seems to like the new runners. Good to see Al. Classic Darts in a French car sounds like a winner.
Are you sure this was an hour ? Damn that went fast. Congrats on the Peugeot and the TA. Very happy you're getting back on the Rover. Say hi to Dean and the Menace for me.
Cheers Scott!
9 & 11 mill. Those French are a bunch of out of the box thinker's. 🤣😂🤣 Good time & great show Scott. Cheers... 👌
That little 403 sounds pretty decent. Maybe the radiator upper radiator hose on the parts car is intact.
Love the Thelma and Louise Thunderbird on the intro. 😂
Quel épisode agréable. Les particularités des voitures françaises sont fascinantes. Mam'selle Francine complète le tableau. En quelle année est le TA ?
I like the flying car in the introduction
"I've only ever seen two of them and I bought them both." 😂
The TA is awesome! Can't wait to see the Rover painted. Wow though what are the odds that the 403 and TA would be runners! Love the intro with the flying car!
Three for three on the Frenchies. Nice! Frankers must approve of that comfy back seat in the TA. Calendar ordered!
Hey thanks so much for ordering a calendar! All the best from me and Frankers...
Dart girl miss guessed, it's French! Shoulda guessed bidet!😂
The "Hot Box" interactive episode with the TA was fantastic! What a fine automobile. As with the 404, the previous owner knew they were good, so thats why he had them, issues of no importance, to be dealt with later. Later ran out, so it will be great to see you sort it out as you have plenty of later. They are worth saving.
“Watch the camera so the flames don’t get it”. Great will it runs on a couple of French cars. We won’t see content like that anywhere else. Excellent show
Hi from France, you still can have a new master cylinder, bendix part # is 111483B,the same as the traction.I sold so many over 34 years in an automotive shop. on the inner fender is teh paint code "beige".This 403 seems to be 1960 or 1961,I couldn't be sure like the donor car.Another information:If you intend to change the rear axle gear oild,NEVER pour regular 80 or 90 grade, you would destroy it,it's a bronze crown diff and as far as I know, only Mobil oil were able to provide it.
A strangle knob would be a handy feature in modern cars.
For reasons completely unnknown I was confident you could start both of those crusty old French cars. Turned out that my intuition was right. Congratulation! Can't wait to see the Traction Avant be used as a regular ride with a bunch of you inside!
I like the two new additions of the French cars! Peugeot is my favorite ! It would be cool restored! My family had a Peugeot wagon when I was little!
Let’s get the TA running smooth this car is SO INTERESTING!!
Cheers from Alabama 🎉
ALL RUNNERS!!!! Yay-the rest is just more fun now! Rover paint AWESOME work Scott!. Wires, dash and all will take some time and finesse-where will he find the time?? Hi to Frankers! Rich
