- Step inside and explore our custom cat enclosure, affectionately known as our catio home. While you’re here, enjoy the antics of our Cute and Funny Cats. Recently, we completed our very first catio project and couldn’t wait to share it with you. Below, you’ll find details on how you can create your own. For an in-depth look, visit our channel-it’s a dynamic DIY project that keeps evolving.
If you’re contemplating a Catio or outdoor space, consider including features that cater to running, climbing, hiding, and rest. Our catio boasts coated wire fencing, all 14 gauge or higher, with sizes like 1.5 x 1.5" and 1.5 x 4". We used pressure-treated lumber, pet screening, plastic roofing, carpet grass, zip ties, and plenty of wood screws. Our secret weapon? An excellent contractor. The equipment lineup included a circular saw, chop saw, jig saw, air compressor, and, most importantly, the trusty air stapler. For walkways, aim for at least 15 inches in height and 8 inches in width (10 inches for high-traffic areas). Platforms should be a minimum of 21 inches wide. And don’t forget the finishing touches: two cedar trees, fresh grass, cedar mulch, small shrubs, cat toys, and-of course-catnip.

No. You helped me. Since my video was posted I have extended the ramps into the "little house" we have in the backyard (a house I built for my daughters when they were young for sleep overs etc). And right now I am adding another "cat house" in a different spot in my backyard. It will be 8 foot square and have access from a window. So I saw lots of things in your video (and the advice in your description) that I can add to the new space. So thanks! You have three (maybe more that I didn't see) happy cats!

I don't own cats, but a good friend of mine does and is always talking about the mischief they get into. I would bet that cats lucky enough to have a catio are more contented once in the house for the night and have no need to get into such shenanigans.

@@OurCatioHome Naturally, goes without saying...of coz, cat rules. After curfew by 8 p.m., my three kitties have all nine perches to the windows and porches to opt for and the rest of the house....sofa, chaise longue, puter chairs to sleep on, and lastly our two beds. Who needs valium and weight blankets with these cozy teddies around?

Thanks for the comment on my catio. Your catio is much bigger and more creative. I know from personal experience how much planning and work goes into making such a project. I think yours is well thought out and impressive. I like ground level bark area, but I was wondering if your cats use that as a litter box. I have had my catio for 3 years I think and I have learned a few things. At first, I put a litter box in the main catio, however, when the cats used it, they would kick litter out of it, and when it rained, there was a mess to clean up. (it's clay, you know, and when it gets wet, it turns to grey mud). I then made a catio outhouse, and this kept the main catio cleaner, and the smell was confined to the outhouse. I make a little catwalk to it. You can see in in one of my videos. It turned out to be a good idea. I change up the furniture and things occasionally and the cats seem to like it. They love it when I go into the catio. I sit there and read a book sometimes. I put a bird feeder nearby to the cats can watch the birds. I added some other features that I will put in a future video. Anyway, good job on your catio.

Love your Catio. Question for you, do your cats spray or does their urine make the area smell like cats?
Thank you for spending time with us today. Our cats are neutered or spayed so they do not spray although I have learned that cats mark their space by rubbing their whiskers against a surface or scratching. A litter box is a necessary item.

I love it, but I wish you explained a little... What did you use for the roof? Is that 1x3 inch fencing? My local box stores don't have that, but I'm a little concerned about using 2x3 inch... Afraid they might be able to bend it enough to slip out.
Hi Steven, Thank you for the feedback. I used plastic corrugated roofing. It is super strong...
As for the fencing it was purchased on Amazon, we used several sizes and types. Some of the fencing as coated and all is 14 gauge or higher, 1.5 x 1.5 and 1.5 x 4 were the sizes. The kitties are not strong enough to bend this.

how did you make the wire cage which runs along the top of the fence? I understand the suppoting 'walk' board but I don't see any wood used to support the wire tunnel. is it just wire which has been bent into shape? I'd like to do something like this but am confused as to how you made that structure. I think this is beyond cool! also how many cats use this at one time? ☺
Thank you for your question. The "catwalk" and platform destination along the fence is supported by wood brackets attached to the 4x4 posts. You may also want to add more support below if it's heavy. The catwalks wire fencing is bent to shape and stapled to a 2x8 board. My specs are detailed on my information introduction. After it is all said and done, I would recommend making it at least 10" wide or wider and 20" tall. We had 3 cats at the time.

Sir I have a question. I'm doing a catio as we speak. Being outside treatedwood is ideal, so my question is. Can I use regular 2x4s as walking areas but use treat wood on everything that touches
Ground or dirt?
Hi Ron, I would consider using wood that is rated either above or below ground depending on the location of placement as to avoid future decay. We hope that this helps and all the best with your project!
