Such a wave comes over me when hearing this! As a member of Young Judaea '74-'79, this song was special in my turbulent and questioning childhood. Post-YK war, rallies at the UN (the Z=R bill), summer camp at Tel Yehudah, chaotic home life, folk dancing in NYC (and riding the NYC subways at 14!), adrift in ideas without my feet on the ground...such is childhood...
...shavuah tov from another wandering Jew!

Here are the lyrics of this song translated from Hebrew into Standard American English:
"I received a slightly excessive punishment, they judged me to death,
I sat in an electric chair, parted from the private*,
If only I had at least been able to swap the chairs,
They usually tell me, "change your place, change your fortune"**
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    I ask
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    You all answer
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    Is it far?
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    You all don't know
My brother collected stamps, therefore he worked at the post office,
He would deliver letters, he even received a commendation,***
One day a cop noticed that he also collected letters,
He was immediately fired from the job, since "every mailman comes to an end"****
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    I ask
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    You all answer
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    Is it fair?
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
You all aren't helping ("Atem lo ozriem")
    (Instrumental)
I had an uncle, [who was] so lazy that he was too lazy to rest,
He would go to the ant, return moody,
Had he been less stupid then he would have surely known,
That there's an addition to the phrase,
"See her ways, and you shall gain wisdom"*****
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    I ask
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    You all answer
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    Is it fair?
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
You all aren't helping ("Atem lo ozriem")
    (Instrumental)
My uncle wanted to know how to swim so he could float permanently,
He learned to swim through correspondence with a well known lifeguard,
When he finally got in the water, he disappeared within seconds,
Two [people] immediately jumped to [help] him,
    "Two sink better than one"******
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    I ask
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    You all answer
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    Is it fair?
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
You all aren't helping ("Atem lo ozriem")
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    I ask
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    You all answer
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    Is it fair?
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
You all aren't helping ("Atem lo ozriem")
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    I ask
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    You all answer
    Hey, Yo-Ya!
    Is it fair?"
(*Long used in Hebrew as an adaptation from the equivalent English word, referring to a private chair. At the time of this song (1970s), one having private arrangements of any kind- be it a seat at a wedding or on an airplane- was considered a luxury, and was referred to in English, albeit sometimes in a denouncing way.)
(**This is a Hebrew proverb, "Meshane makom, meshane mazal," meaning literally, "[One] changes [their] place, [one] changes [their] fortune.")
(***The word "Toar" is used in this context to mean "award/ distinction/ commendation." Used in different context, this word also means "[academic] degree; diploma")
(****First he uses the English word "job", adopted into common Hebrew from the equivalent English word and meaning. Gidi Gov sings, "key yesh sof leKol davar," which is a play-on-word double meaning in the song. "Key yesh sof leKol davar" is a Hebrew phrase meaning "everything comes to an end." In this Hebrew expression the word "davar" means "thing." But, if you change the spelling of one letter (the "v") in the word "davar" from 'bet' to 'vahv,' the word pronunciation stays the same but its meaning completely changes from "thing" to "a [male] letter carrier; a mailman."
(*****"See her ways, and you will gain wisdom," in Hebrew: "Re'eh dracheyhah, veh chacham," from the Hebrew Biblical proverb, "Lech el haNemallah atzel, re'eh dracheyhah, veh chacham." This translates most closely to, "Go to the ant, [you] lazy one, see her ways, and you shall gain wisdom." It suggests that one should not be lazy and adopt a strong work ethic in life by referencing the ant, which toils daily for its colony.)
(******Gidi Gov uses the Hebrew phrase, "Tovim ha'shnaeem mih'Ha echahd," meaning "two are better than one." But he pronounces the word "tovim" (plural for "good") with an alternative letter to the Hebrew spelling (you can notice the different pronunciation, sounding more guttural; "tov-'Aeem"), thus changing both the technical pronunciation and meaning of the word from the plural of "good" to the plural of "[people] sinking").

    First verse:
I received a punishment slightly harsh, they condemned me to death
They sat me on electric chair, separated me from the Private
Would that it were possible at least, to exchange with him the chairs
Because they say as a general rule, [this is an old Hebrew saying] "A change of location, a change of luck."
    Chorus:
Hey yo-ya, I ask you [pl.]
    Hey yo-ya, you answer
    Hey yo-ya, is this fair?
Hey yo-ya, you do not know.

    Second verse:
My brother collected stamps, therefore he worked in the post office
He sorted the letters, he even received a certificate for this
One day they realised, he also was collecting letters
From the job he was immediately fired, because
    [warning, horrible pun ahead]
"There is an end to every ``davar''."
["Davar" can be translated "thing" or "mailman" depending on if you spell it with a Bet or a Vov. the saying is originally "To all things there is an end"]

    Third verse:
I had an uncle, he was such an idler, he was too lazy to rest
He would "Go to the ant" [Prov. 6:6], and return without satisfaction
Were he only less of a fool, he certainly would know there was
Also an addition to the proverb, "Consider her ways and be wise".

    4th verse:
My cousin wanted to swim, in order to float properly
He learned swimming by correspondence course from a recognised lifeguard
When at last he entered the sea, within 2 seconds he disappeared
Two jumped in after him immediately,
    [**Danger, horrible pun coming up**]
"The two sank because of the one."
OK, that last needs explanation. The saying is "Tovim shnaim min ha'echad" (Two are better than one, Eccles. 4:9), but he said "Tova'im" (they sank) rather than "Tovim" (they are better).

Danny Sanderson, Gidi Gov, Efraim Shamir, Alon Oleartchik, Yitzhak Klepter, Yoni Rechter, and the festival’s very own Meir Fenigstein are back together on stage, playing all the greatest hits. A nostalgic, heartwarming experience for the whole family. One day, when at Sprout Lake we went off on our day trip and went roller skating (remember those?) and the girls in our bunk had it on tape (remember those?). A tradução em português (não está perfeita) é a seguinte:
Recebi uma pena um pouco exagerada
    Me julgaram para ser morto
    Sentei em uma cadeira elétrica
    Me despedi do meu carro
    Se ao menos pudesse
    Trocar as cadeiras
    Pois dizem que geralmente
Quem troca de lugar, troca de sorte
    Hei Yo Ya, eu pergunto
    Hei Yo Ya, vocês respondem
Hei Yo Ya, será que é justo?
Hei Yo Ya, vocês não sabem.

@yomama69ist You've clearly never heard of the bands The Who, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Cream, Black Sabbath, or The Rolling Stones.
