"Walk on By" has always been my favourite Stranglers song but over the last two months it has taken on a whole new meaning for me personally having to cope with the supposed "coronovirus", and having lost a favourite Aunt and my best friend and companion of the last 10 years, Buster my English Springer Spaniel!
This Band were world leaders in music, so far ahead of their time, absolutely superb and still relevant now. The kids do not know what they missed but can still catch up.
I was a nipper of 18 starting college when my chum Max introduced me to punk / new wave. We drew few lines & gobbled it all from DEVO to Blondie & Ian Dury and Plastic Bertrand and back again. Great days & great tunes. cheers ps that were 1978.
Me too . The day Rattus was released i was at my favourite record store for opening time . Was elated as i got first album out of the box with free single , Choosey Suzie . Ahhh.. Those were the days 🎹🎹🎹🎹 RIP Dave Greenfield 🙏🏻
"Christ he told his mother Christ he told her not to bother Cos he's alright in the city Cos he's high above the ground He's just hanging around (hanging around)......." One of the greatest verses ever!! The Stranglers were like a well sharpened straight razor that cuts fast and deep.
One of the finest songs of its era; absolute poetry. Has been a favourite of mine since '78. This version showcases both Cornwell's talent for meter, and the rock solid rhythm section that defined their early sound. Great stuff, thanks for posting!
Love this so much. Rip Dave. Surely that's the end of the Stranglers apart from maybe a concert of remembrance of sorts? Would be good to see Hugh appear just in Daves honour.
Not strictly punk because when they first emerged, they were called 'The Doors copiers' and if you listen to Dave Greenfield's synthesizer, it's very similar to Ray Manzarek's style of play.
Grateful to the late John Peel for giving The Stranglers air time. The greatest group to my mind since the 70;s when they first started. All getting older now but still can see them live playing their great sounds and giving be more nostalgia.
Saw them in 85 at Newcastle city hall the aural sculpture tour. Original line up , Hugh Cornwall still in the band at the time , one of the greatest concerts I’ve been to
MOST OF YOU KNOW THE STRANGLERS, RIGHT? BUT FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T... They initially formed way back in 1974 and had their first live gig in December of that year. By May 1975 they were looking for a keyboard player and found Dave Greenfield. Thus the classic quartet was formed and gave this punky band it's unusual sound. How many punk bands back then had an organ? One of the first British bands to release a record, Stranglers burst on the scene on January 28, 1977 with the single (Get A) Grip (On Yourself) bw London Lady. On April 16, 1977 Stranglers released their debut LP, Rattus Norvegicus, and the song Hanging Around was included on that album. This is an excellent video of the band in the studio in all their youthful glory playing Hanging Around.
The Stranglers were incredible, but they would never be the same without Hugh. He definitely left his mark on the band in a good way while he was there. It would be great if he would get back together with them and tour. His voice and lead were truly one of a kind.
this is wonderful footage. thank you for sharing. the hammond organ sound made the stranglers something extraordinary, artsy, decadent and sinister. takes me back to '77, when i had a razor blade hanging from my left ear. still hanging around now, without the blade.
Brilliant footage. They remain my most played band on Spotify, even though I have stacks of playlists. Quality musicianship never ever dates. I remember my mum saying she didnt like the swearing, So kept on playing their songs as an angry teenager!
These guys took the sound of the Doors down to the streets and let it marinate in the nocturnal smell of pubs, alleys, pavement princesses, an experimental year on heroin and lots of physical 'interactions' with the general public. To paraphrase Jean-Jacques it's a wonder they all survived. Music that stands the test of time!!
Its taken from Battersea plus all you young Stranglers fans. A video that was released by the Stranglers Information Service many years ago. I've transferred it from vhs to dvd. Rare footage of Nick Cash from 999 on it as well when they toured with the Stranglers in Vienna circa 1978.
I grew up listening to The Stranglers but now bizarrely through his work, my nephew is on first name terms with Hugh and introduced me to the main man a couple of years ago at one of Hugh's gigs in edinburgh!
Love it. Funny enough oday I was telling my daughter how I used to see the stranglers when I was 16. Dressed head to toe in black lol :) jj had an awful voice but what a fabulous musician... as for dave g .. fabulous musician too.
I like how the keyboard is high in the mix. Jet trained as a jazz musician, John as a classical guitarist, Dave’s skill obviously speaks for itself and Hugh’s vocals were simply wonderful. Without Hugh, the band was able to carry on because of the raw talent that they had. I lost interest after Hugh left because it simply wasn’t the same without him. I would have felt this way had it have been Jet that had left. For me, the magic was the four of them. I can’t help how I feel 🫶
Criminally underrated band and the best group to come out of the punk and new wave era...no one comes close to the Stranglers
Forgot the Clash ?
What's criminal is trying to continue without Hugh.

They were always a very technically competent band with some very, very good songs.

All still alive, Hugh Cornwell left the band a while back though. First band I went to see, 1979 I think at Leeds Uni, What an experience!!!
I also recently made friends with one of their original managers, Jet Black's brother.
Loved this the first time I heard it 🤩
Stunning the best punk band ever saw them live stunning

hands down THE greatest band to emerge out of the so 'punk era'.
