I saw them in 1977 at the "Paradiso" in Amsterdam. I was 19 and this was my introduction to Punk. What an eye opener. I am 65 now and still love this band and this song in particular.
Jet Black was 39 when this was made same age as my dad at the time , there"s me leaping up n down to peaches and me old man is the same age as the drummer , now me old man is 84 with 1 week to leave and im remembering lots of things , cheers Dad xxx
One of the best bass players on the planet.one of the most poignant bands of the 20th and 21st century they certainly shook things up and brought me a lot of pleasure going to see them live.off to Manchester tonight to see them kick it up
JJ was awesome then and 40 odd years later not only can he play killer bass but looks like he could kick 10 bells out of you if you annoy him.. great mix of virtuosity and menace
Awesome punk band! This is one of all time favourites. I've listened to this song so many times. I'm 23 and love this band I've gotten more into them than usual recently.
I traveled all the way to the UK to see the best band in the world ( in Brum ,..and they played this tune ! ) but whilst in London, a friend brought me to the Hope n Anchor and there above the Jukebox is a framed pic of the meninblack !! I was completely floored having no idea they played there , And neither did my friend ! Hahaha 👏 👏
This video and the first snarl of JJ's bass had me hooked, and hoping to see The Stranglers and Hugh this year or next best part of half a century later!
It was around the mid 80's I saw The Stranglers in concert in my hometown of Santa Barbara, California at the Santa Barbara County Bowl. Oddly enough they opened up for Roxy Music. Two of my many favorite bands from England.
@@WaltzInBlack Yes it was! I had the studio recording of the LP 'Feline', and I did purchase the t-shirt of that tour. Unfortunately I do not have the ticket stub nor the t-shirt. I do wish I still had them. I kept yelling out for them to play "Peaches" a few times but they didn't. But Hugh did respond to that, "Ah. Someone remembers." I think I was the only one at that concert that knew who The Stranglers were.
@@undergroundwarrior70 this gig is also interesting as it's not on the 1983 gigography. They were in the area at the time. As they were support to RM, I wonder if it was an early extra show added in to their schedule. Never knew the supported Roxy.
@@WaltzInBlack It was announced that Roxy Music was coming to Santa Barbara at that time, but I do not remember if The Stranglers were on the tickets or they were listed as Special Guests. Or for some reason a cancellation on the other band and The Stranglers were available at that time to open up for Roxy Music. I do not know any of the details for that concert. I was just very happy to see The Stranglers and Roxy Music that same evening on stage. (Also it was around 1981 or '82 that I did not make the effort to go see Kraftwerk in concert at the Santa Monica Civic, in Santa Monica, California. To this very day I kick myself in the ass when I think about it).
Remarkable seeing Wilson say something good about The Stranglers...however back handed it might be. Of course he later totally rejected them after the Savage incident.
I believe that the contemporaneous, ITV Granada critic comment at the end to outline that The Stanglers were essentially rebelling against the "punk rejection of objectionable Rock 'technique'" was well made. They were/are a great band caught in the transmission between Rock/Punk/New Wave. Anyway, a great band for musicians to enjoy and learn from.
The bass tone is something that won't happen again i guess... Distortion, full attack and a unique (but not the only) bass driven single in band's history!
@@WaltzInBlack Castaways in Union Street. They only put on live bands for a couple of years. 77-79 I'm guessing. I was really disappointed because I liked them on record, but live the sound was awful, they were out of tune, and Burnel was more interested in pretending to fight people than in playing. It was pathetic, the worst live show I have ever seen.
@@shaunkelly9860 saw the Fiesta gig in the Autumn which to me was really good. In the summer there was loads of trouble following them around which sometimes impacted onstage & JJ was extra full of attitude at the time. Probably very aware it could erupt any time. Sounds like Castaways due to when Rattus came out and being toured. The new Bands that year had loads of trouble all over the place. It was a great time to watch live music. Only ever saw one band at Castaways and that was Sham 69.
@@WaltzInBlack Castaways wasn't the best venue, and yes, there were definitely some assholes in the audience. I think The Vibrators were the support band - they were ok.

JJ's bass sound ! And playing .
This was the song that made me a lifelong stranglers fan

Those T-shirts are hilarious. 😂
Still the best live band.
I love this version, and Tony was right 👍
Great band great track

A great song...it sounds like the old school punk....
Fascinating to see the song performed, as well as Wilson’s rather arch comments.
