Lyrics:
The break of day has come, I see the cracks have just begun
To line the walls, line the walls
I want to see the little girls and boys destroy their toys
And line the walls, line the walls
What a fate for little girls
British boys minds in a whirl
Tell you things that'll make your curls
Straighten out, straighten out
Straighten out, straighten out
I'm twenty years or more, just tell me what we're living for
So tell me now, tell me now
Frustrated intellect, the government capitulation
Follows now, follows now
What a fate for little girls
British boys minds in a whirl
Tell you things that'll make your curls
Straighten out, straighten out
Straighten out, straighten out
The break of day has come, I see the cracks have just begun
To line the walls, line the walls
I want to see the little girls and boys destroy their toys
And line the walls, line the walls
What a fate for little girls
British boys minds in a whirl
Tell you things that'll make your curls
Straighten out, straighten out
Straighten out, straighten out
Straighten out, straighten out
Straighten out, straighten out

Don't even get me started, what a band and what a tune.
Too true,Rip Dave.
Absolutely mate
Well said. Proper good.
What?
They are my favorite no joke
I love Ian's trapped butterfly dance. He was one of a kind. 🦋❤❤❤
Early Stranglers is always brilliant , JJ's bass has been killing me for 45 years .
He is a unique force on the bass.
For sure. 'School Mam' still blows me away bro.
Even their more recent stuff is better than most of the crap in the charts these days but yes, the stuff recorded 77-81 was probably their zenith. Attitude, biting lyrics, an angry but accomplished style and Hugh doing the singing was definitely their best days.
So true!
@@tadsomato1940 He studied bass at uni.
Awesome band. Hard to believe we were listening to this at 17 and it’s now 45 years ago!
still listen now....am sitting here reading a very old copy of strangled , the old fan magazine 😃
@@specialse yes I’ve got a few of those. I still listen to the current band but haven’t managed to see them in a while.
@@SteveInskip saw them in the 80,s a few times , last time was the Aural sculpture tour in 85 at the Edinburgh play house , i feel blessed to have been around at that time along with all the other punk bands of the day . it definitley was better back then we also had some great home grown acts here , Skids , Rezillos , Exploited and others...great days.
@@specialse I was going out with a lass at Sheffield Polytechnic between 1979 and 1982 so saw most of the decent bands around during that time including, on a Scottish theme, a young and rather gorgeous Annie Lennox in The Tourists. Voice like an Angel that lass! First time I got to see The Stranglers would have been 1981 I’d have thought, and the last time with Hugh would have been on their last tour together at Sheffield City Hall. I’m hoping to see them in France in early 2023 which I think is their last ever full tour.
@@SteveInskip hope you ,make it over there. good times 😁
THAT BASS !!!!
Filthy isn't it 😁
@@stephielulu9096 Its GREEN.....and filthy beyond belief 😜

This was filmed at the stairs leading from Ladbroke Grove going down into Southern Row. It's all rather modern now but back in the 70's it was like walking into another century. The house to the left of the stairs which also looks out onto Ladbroke Grove above a shop is now worth £1.5 million.
Nice one, thanks for that
Vow nice history👍
Correct.Ludicrously underrated...not just brilliant punk anthems but accomplished musicians all.Assume they scared away the mainstream press but by far the best band of their era.
The Stranglers, among the 10 best rock bands in history!!!
A true masterpiece. R.I.P. Dave. Gone but never forgotten!❤
❤
Never can be a band like The Stranglers again.☘️👍
Is that you Yoda.
They were such a radical band back in 77. They had the attitude of punk (which is why they were lumped in with punk) but were way better than most other bands of the era. Love Dave's organ playing too, gives it a Doors vibe contrasting brilliantly with the heavy rock guitars of JJ and Hugh. This is a great track and was the flipside of excellent the 'Something better change' single. The videos were also filmed back to back on the same day (supposedly in the yard of the off-licence that Jet Black owned in when the band first started out as they couldn't afford to hire a filming venue).
It was filmed at Southern Row off Ladbroke Grove London a one-time workshop access for 'Happy' Hamrax Motors, a landmark for west London motorbike owners at that time.
@@almklit now that I didn't know. Thankyou 🙂
@@trevorbrown6654 I always assumed it was the off license too. I have been looking for the whole vid filmed that day. I had it on VHS.
As relevant today as it ever was. RIP Dave. Long Live The Stranglers!
Pure British-ness Oozzing out here!!!! ✊🏽 Makes me proud!!! 😁

J.J. Burnel studied classical guitar in his younger years.
Jet Black was a jazz drummer in his younger years.
Hugh Cornwell played bass in a band in the late 60's.
Dave Greenfield learned how to play the guitar from a older schoolmate, played in several bands before joining The Stranglers, and he worked for his father in the printing business, and as a piano tuner. Dave was a musical perfectionist and he could be awkward in social situations; observations consistent with his diagnosis, which was never made public during his lifetime, as a high-functioning autistic. Which most of us (or none of us) didn't even know.
I saw The Stranglers in concert in my hometown of Santa Barbara, California around the mid 80's at the Santa Barbara County Bowl.
Oddly enough they opened up for Roxy Music. Two of my many favorite bands from England.
Do Rest In Peace Dave. We all miss you, but never forgotten.
I had the pleasure of shaking hands with Dave at a gig in Copenhagen 1995. He was smiling and friendly. :)
@@soepil Cool. Must have been one of his good days. Sure wish I met Dave. I did have a conversation with Tony Levin in back of the theater after I saw King Crimson in concert in my hometown. He is a very nice person. This was around mid 80's
@@undergroundwarrior70 Very cool. He is great, too.
Great post, thanks man.
@@pigknickers2975 Thank you, and you are very welcome.
Their first 3 albums are ROCK CLASSICS!
When they were still angry. Before Hugh wanted everyone to forget those "punk" albums, and only listen to their new "light rock".
And The Raven too.
I haven't heard this for years and it still sounds incredible.
Listened to this band when I was a teenager. I still enjoy their music as much today! They've never grown stale for me
The best bass player of all time and the best keyboard player of all time. The drummer and guitarist were not too shabby either. No wonder I still love 'em. My first band and that feeling never passes.
Yesssssssss
Jon lord!
@@johnross2924 Yes, he also played a keyboard.
@@paulcarew593 played it very well too 🐐
@@johnross2924 He certainly did, like Ray Manzarek, Rick Wakeman, Richard Wright, etc.
My Brother loved the stranglers I would have sat in are bedroom with him playing their music on a record player those were the days bring me back. RIP Gerald
every now and again I return to watch and listen to this, it realigns me I guess
The contrast between this and their song "Golden Brown" is mind blowing.
Think there record label wanted them to move on from punk
When you are 20's anything is possible. I am 57 old punk 🇫🇮and some music I will listen till the End and Stranglers is one of them. I like them too and their music because they don't try to please in any way. The attitude is just right for punk music.
saw these guys in " 82... BEST GROUP i ever saw! (( vs the Stones// Zappa etc etc!
The Stranglers, soundtrack to my rebellious yoof 😁👍
RIP Dave x
Today is 9th Nov 2022. In all the years I've been listening to this absolute Stranglers classic I had no idea they made a video to go with it. Oh crikey, flipping heck, this is just wonderful wonderful wonderful... x
I lived near that location, Powis Square, right by the Tabernacle Church on Talbot Road. c#23Powis Square or so, 5-storey houses, how did they get all their gear up on the roof. Lots of squats around there back then too, hence randomers on adjacent roofs and barbed wire etc... it was rough/dangerous at times back then. Unrecognisable today...
Just superb. Four massive talents
I was there, man.... Brunel Uni..... on the wrist stamping gate.... JJB swiigning his bass around..... Bought all the early albums, incl. B&W with the white single.... 7m Walk On By ..... x
I remember seeing this video decades ago.
I didn't think I'd ever see it again.
And that (you little boy band mummy boys) is what rock n roll is all about..end of lecture!
This band is Fucking FANTASTIC!!!
First Stranglers song I ever heard. Still love it like it was yesterday. Growing up in Canada I had to rely on the import stores to bring me the best British vinyl because it was hit and miss with domestic releases.
Wow!!! how can play like this!!?? Nobody but Dave... YES... Dave R.I.P. Greenfield... take it away to God, Dave!!
This is truly a great Band!!!
So good.
I love:
- the way Dave has to get on his knees to worship his organ before the solo.
- Jet's light touch. He could so easily have overwhelmed the vocal and didn't.
- JJ's fabulous raw sound.
- Hugh.
PS/ "For 20 years or more" not "I'm 10 years or more". Read his lips.
Dave's massive swelling organ & JJ's filthy bass
Jet was known for not taking any "mime" performances seriously.
Watching this video again, It's kind of sad seeing Hugh and JJ at the front, and Jet Black and Dave Greenfield at the back. RIP Jet Black and Dave Greenfield, will never forget you.
That avocado paint job on J.J's bass is pure punk beauty!!
Perfect band, still way underrated.
@@paintingholidayitaly Well, start with those who hated Punk/New Wave for a start.
The Stranglers enriched the punk era with their original sound.
Like the Doors
Stranglers forever! Their music will really make you “straighten outtt” 🙌🙌
This still rocks 45yrs later 👏🏻🏴
First time that I have seen this music clip of the Stranglers. They are one of my favorite bands. I was inmy teens back in the 1970s, and I liked the British Punk sound. COOL!
Magnificent! My favourite singer! Hugh Cornwell! What a great voice!!!
Made my day
The true and only Stranglers.
I’m 58yrs old and my pulse still races
Fender precision hit hard with a pick,,, is the greatest bass tone 🔥 🔥
yeah, really great
What a great band.
Has there ever been a better double A-side release than this and '...Change'?!
To all strangers fans out there... Keep on keeping on!!!! 😎
Never seen a Stranglers show without something crazy happening. They were the best!
Underrated bassline, underrated bass player.😊😊😊
How good is this still!
Dave's keyboard solo on this is sensational 👏
Absolutely, the keyboard solo is nothing short of sensational. R.I.P. Dave.
Back when I was still at school I bought the video collection on Betamax, forward thinking.
Hugh is the great frontman and David sporting the one piece jumper at the keys. These guys were just getting started. Always and forever they are the band that took me from hard core Punk rock into what would be be the New Music.
Guilfords finest at their best.
Jean-Jacques Burnel was such a good bass player! I think that really compliments the song here.
Greatest bass player and keyboard player, fantastic vocals and drumming… they couldn’t go wrong
Great video of a great band. Each individual member of the band added something special to the music. One of my favourite tracks.
Thank you so much for loading this.
Pure Stranglers gold. 🐀😎🖤
SAW THEM AT THE FYORD GREEN IN LEEDS JUST BEFORE THEY GOT BIG AWSOME NIGHT
Legends !!…. Great live band , pumping songs , and lyrical wizards..🧙♂️
I was only 9 or 10 during the Punk era, but still remember seeing them on telly and reading about them like it was yesterday. After all these years I have NEVER seen this video before.❤❤
brilliant and the bass even better
From Straighten Out to Waltz in Black... You can never nail the stranglers down to one style.
my absolute FAVorite!!! 🥰🥰🥰 that little Buddy Holly-ish thing he does at the end of each line in the chorus : mon Dieu!!! 😍😍😍
The days of freedom and expression without fear of offending.
RIP DG
Amazing Band that I have adored since 1977! This amazing tune was a 'B' Side?? How amazing , this was the flip to 'Something Better Change' ! dx
I had forgotten what a great track this was. Buddy Holly's influence on Hugh's vocals is very strong indeed.
How time has flown.
Bandas como estas ya no hay
Yesss! Keep uploading these old great videos Stranglers!
THE BEST FROM THE UK ! STRANGLERS FOREVER !
Still got the picture cover 45 of this. The A side is class too.
I love the Stranglers. I understand they are from Guildford, UK. I happen to live in Guilford County!
Tuuuuuuune ..What a band.🤘🤘
The spirit of punk with great musicianship-
Great memories, great band
Never ever tire of hearing this
Such a gritty voice, just like on their single 'Peaches'. Great stuff. 💫🎸🎶
A good song for our time....
My they were brilliant musicians.
I'm still blown away every time I listen to these guys. Genius. Geniuses.
I wouldn't exactly call them geniuses but quirky pub rock. But I think their melodic experimental attempts put them ahead of others in the pub-rock scene. Some interesting lyrics but sometimes a bit silly.
Doors vibes ! So Good !!! 💖☀
Wow! Starts off with a bang; gets better and better as it goes along. And any excuse to see Dave do a solo is a good excuse.
The best of the best.
Powerful. Never heard it before, thanks for the upload! The bass line is so prevalent here. Oh man, The Stranglers music seems to touch my soul every time in a different way.
The deep purple of punk.
Cracking tune
Love it! Tight group! Bassline excellent and Dave on his organ amazing!
One of my (many) fave Stranglers tunes and what a magnificent video! Awesome dress code, not a single Seditionaries top in sight! Punk as a Monkey's Uncle.
Can we get a stranglers archive series and general release remasters of the old albums on vinyl please ?
Love it! All my 15 year old yesterdays flooding back
Top band. Top song. Loved it back then, still love it now. We were lucky to live when we did.
One of their very best 👍❤️🥰
Their best song. I think.....
Cool ❤
just so great to see this old promo re-surface here in Y/T land. Welcome to the real/real-deal and bless you Dave Son, brilliant to see him again there performing his majjick in his heyday 🖤
I think this was their second single. Probably my favourite number by them.
Double A side with "something better change".
@@ECCENTRICERIC69 Still would have been nice to include it on "No More Heroes". Weird to have a video of a non-album song.
THANK YOU FOR THIS.
For legit *years*, your videos on here kept getting "copyright strikes". I only got to see them consistently on this UA video collection DVD I have. So thank you!
Straigthen Out!!! Muchas gracias querida banda!!!!
