Brother Halverson, thanks for your inspiring messages and sharing with us your gift and love of the scriptures. Your love for the women is remarkable. I have learned so much about Esther, because of your lesson. As a leader of the sisters in my stake, the following quote says it all for me: "Let us be grateful to our Father in Heaven for His precious daughters. Let us help them as much as we can. Let us encourage every woman who questions her value to turn to her Heavenly Father and His glorified Son for supernal confirmation of her immense individual worth." ~Richard G. Scott
I guess some people don't have the time to listen to unshaven saints podcast when they are 5-7 hours in length. I do. As a truck driver I have nothing but time to listen between stops. Thank you Jared for the effort you put into this series. I'm really looking forward to next year's new testament series. In a world and where everything seems to be conspiring against believers I am incredibly grateful for your wisdom and insight into the scriptures. So thank you for the boost I need listening to your podcast.

Thank you so much for this lesson. It was so helpful to me personally. I'm 77 years of age and full of vim and vigor still and I know that this time of my life is essential because even though I am aging I still feel so driven by my spirit to continue to search for a purpose in each age...and this may be the most critical time in my life to do so much good. I took Ester to my heart, and this lesson was felt deep within my heart and soul. Thank you so much for your insight and thoughtful comments. I really appreciated the lesson in its entirety and the complexity of the situations that were presented one within another.
@1:40:20 I realize that by studying scriptures (almost) daily that this has become my personal “pep talk” for the day. The personal questions mentioned in time stamp only confirm how important this daily pep talk really are to the well-being of my life…thank you
Bro. Jared; Thank you for time, not only for the series of broadcast, but for all the education that you have plied yourself to. This is my second year studying with you and I have found that I can not start my day without my study. I’m just heart sick that I didn’t get to study “The Book of Mormon” with you, I even get sick in the pit of my stomach at the thought of having to wait another two years😳……Again, thank you for your willingness to give up ur time and sleep to teach us!
I am so glad you went over chapter 1! Vashti is my most favorite woman in the scriptures! She was to come to parade in front of these drunken men with only the crown on her head. I don’t think she despised her husband, I think she was standing her ground of virtue, not wanting to walk naked in front of all these drunken men. I feel bad that the church skips over this story. I know so many women that live in unrighteousness dominion from men who demand their wife to do what they are told to do. The king could have easily killed Vashti however I think he loved her so much that he just sent her away, and later feels terrible because he probably really loved her.
Talking about prejudice, your story reminds me of a story of mine. On my mission, my companion and I talked to a man for two hours in a laundromat about the gospel while we were waiting for our laundry to finish. When it was time for us to leave, he told us that he wanted to learn more and that he felt the spirit telling him that everything we had said was good and true. Then he said, he was glad to learn about the gospel from every good place "except Mormons." He would "never listen to a Mormon." At that point I thought he was talking like in the past and that he was going to say something about seeing that we had good things about the gospel too so I said something about being glad he was willing to listen to us even though we were "Mormons". His face dropped and he didn't listen to another word we said. It was really sad.
I love your focus on prejudice. I know that there were very many people who had been prejudiced because of the influence of people that they should have been able to trust. They learned things and were prompted by the spirit that they were in the presence of a great prophet or rabbi, some even felt that they were in the presence of their long anticipated messiah, but then they found that His name was Jesus of Nazareth and suddenly they cried 'Crucify him!' or 'Stone him!' because they had been prejudiced or had a predetermination that he was blasphemous or a child of Beelzebub. I hope that I never find myself in such a situation where I reject truth because I had already made up my mind to reject it and ignored the prompting of the Holy Spirit that I should humbly submit to a higher power.
Have I been sent for such a time as this.. well my patriarchal blessing says so.. that I was held back for this time.. I've spent 48 years here trying to figure out why.. 40 of them a baptized member of the Kingdom. I was baptized July 4th 1982. One day less than a month after I turned 8.. So thankful for your "gift of gab and teaching". I have found things I need to hear "line up on line" and step by step to progress in my journey. Love you all on this "page". If I don't meet you in this life I'll see you on the other side. .
This is perhaps one of my favorite books in all scripture (of course, I say that about most books). This is truly an inspiration! Thank you for helping it to come alive!
I've never heard Ester put this way. I'm so impressed with her. As one that has faced death and injury on several occasions for the sake of others you inspire my by bringing this Amazing woman of God to life for me. I wish I could be half the Warrior of God she is.
The King James version was translated by William Tyndale, who was contemporary with William Shakespeare. I think it ironic that Tyndale is more read than Shakespeare. Jared makes a point about the words used in the King James version, and it occurs to me that God was in the works. The other thing that hit me hard as I listened this morning (on my way to work) was the day appointed for the Jews to die, being the thirteenth day of the twelfth month. I was born December thirteenth. I was a very ill newborn, and should have died due to the Rh factor. My doctor donated his blood that I might live.
You know that she must have been only a teenager about 12 or 14 taken to the palace, then trained her ways to behavior in the ways to act like a queen and and more. Step out side of her Comfort zone, and fasting for 3 days and come before the king and asking for him to join her in a beautiful meal, this must have been inspired by the knowledge and what was needed. And to bring out the Truth of the reason what did she want? Beautiful story. Beautiful Faith 📖❤️🙏
There may be an additional reason to keep the prospective virgins isolated for twelve months - to make sure they are not carrying someone else’s child to prevent succession drama down the road.
Okay, before I even hear what you have to say about Esther I have to comment on your extensive tie collection. 😁 I just love that you are not afraid to wear actual colors and patterns (as opposed to simple muted stripes). I'd probably come back every week just to see what tie you're wearing if I weren't drinking in the knowledge and insights you share. Thank you for that bit of brightness in my daily life! And then your missionary story! Love it! What a great way to start my day. 💕
This was a great lesson on Esther, what a brave and faithful lady. We can all take something from this and use it in our daily lives. I’m looking forward to part 2
Thank you for sharing these lessons. Perhaps your love of Sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, combined with the blessings of Technology that was amplified with the Lockdowns, has helped people like me look closer and more deeply so we can "Feast Upon the Words of Christ". I remember I had dreams where I would be absent the entire school year, only to find out I need to take a test or hand in a paper. I felt that perhaps even when I finished college, I still needed something similar to Institute. I am grateful for your willingness and joy in serving me and being my personal Institute-like teacher. 😊 P.S. I love your idea of switching up the teachings method! 😉 In all seriousness, when you shared your message about trying to help people move past their prejudice for a name or association, I couldn't help but remember the phrase that talks about how Joseph Smith's name will be had for Good and Evil. Although I've heard here and there about people not favoring Joseph Smith, your description about someone's reaction was still surprising. And yet, how often do we each dismiss a subject or person because of our perceptions of them. 😏
The cautionary tale of Vashti was still a theme 1500 years after Christ had come. I cannot hear her story without Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew going through my mind at the same time.

An additional part that gets missed, and both further condemns the King and further elevates Queen Vashti, is that this parading would have been without clothing. The King was going to parade his wife naked in front of everyone. I praise Queen Vashti for her modesty and her self-respect. It may never be clear the impact this decision had on the King. However, I wonder if he pondered on how he blew it with Queen Vashti, and remembered to make a less emotional and impulsive decision when Esther approached him contrary to existing custom and law. There is so much power and clarity that comes into a man's life when he is walking the covenant path and striving to be a more converted disciple of Christ; in particular, he sees his wife as an equal, a partner and an help-meet. He desires to love and protect her, not exploit her.

You spoke briefly about how some women in the church have struggled with our roles. .. is it due to the doctrine and Lord? Or due to our experiences? I’ve had to ask myself this question. In my experience men in the church don’t ever view their actions as ‘Unrighteous dominion’. I’ve seen this occasionally. Most often, however, what I’ve experienced would be called ‘benevolent sexism’. It is this concept that I’ve struggled with the most as a strong and faithful woman of the gospel.
Br H......in Esther 1:3-4 it says there was a feast to all of the known world (which ranged from India to Ethiopia - vrs 1). Vrs 4 states the feast was to show the "riches of his glorious kingdom and the honor of his excellent majesty." Might it be possible that it would take up to 6 months, or many days of preparation and journey for the rulers of the various provinces to travel to Shushan? It does not talk about any wine until verse 7. This wine is talked about during a second feast of 7 days, post the 180 day feast talked about in the previous verses.. This wine is given with a standing order in vrs 8 "none did compel." "That they should do according to every man's pleasure." I'm not sure why this has been translated as a 6 month drunken/wild time (I apologize for the previous comment). Did Mordecai have to be so disrespectable to Haman? When I read Elder Anderson's past General Conf talk "Following Jesus: Being a Peacemaker"...I wonder what is being celebrated here. His personal actions put the entire Jewish community at risk. Had Haman decided to attempt the destruction of the Jewesh people on his own at some time in the future I highly believe God would have interceded. Esther is compared to Joseph.....Was Esther hated of her siblings, was she sold into slavery or had her life threatened by her siblings, was she in prison numerous times and have to wait a number of years to be rescued?? Yes, she did advance to the second position in the Persian kingdom as Joseph did in the Egyptian kingdom....I find it incredibly powerful that Esther would be willing to sacrifice her life for her people and it seems to me that this action is looked upon by you (and many others) as something very much out of the female character. However, in my 66 years I have come across numerous women that, I believe, would do exactly the same (and would counsel Mordecai to stop being difficult). I don't think this makes Esther to be a woman out-of-the-ordinary. I believe Esther is a woman to be looked up to in times of difficulty and see how she prevailed in a very difficult time. She lead out as she could. She called upon God for direction and then went and did what had to be done. Thank God for women (and men) like Esther......there are many, certainly not as many as are needed at the present time of history......but, they are out there. Thank you for your efforts, I appreciate them.....I'm also grateful that I don't always agree with your view, it keeps me coming back to hear and think. Thank you again
Thought President Benson's time to serve was right and know the world will go especially crazy just before Elder Oaks goes in unless President Nelson's out lasts him.
Ironic that the names would mean such opposite things in each language almost like you can’t actually be lulled into the comfort of the new culture as long as you remember your true language that to be Ester only would be hiding who you really are and being only Mortici would be a bitter loss of being a covenant people
I keep trying to find a reasonable take on this. The NIV is one of the worst translations I've seen. I could spend hours on the damage done by that translation to Jesus's words alone. BOM Central acknowledged that this was one of the few parts of the bible left unchanged by JS, but then proceeded to run with a ridiculous assumption to defend a haughty queen because a "man" wrote it and ironically I had to point out that if unchanged, then God wrote it and that women can absolutely abuse their power and we should never assume someone is a victim without solid evidence. Hopefully someone out there leans less on the philosophy of men to study this with. Sorry to be critcal but I'm hoping you will research this topic as to consider whether to move forward with its use or not. Thank you for your efforts.
I have a question: If Mordeci is a Benjaminite & therefore "Esther" is too, why are they called Jews? Are not the Jews of the house of Judah? Shouldn't they be called Israelites?
I see a warning with the tale of Queen Vashti. The comments on her being noble and not being objectified is a valid point, but I can also see the flip side of women not observing the patriarchal order and totally dismissing the authority of their husbands. The man is to preside over his family in righteousness and the wife is to support her husband in righteousness. They are to rule together. Too many women nowadays are disrespectful of their husbands and may find themselves losing out on their exaltation by being separated from their husbands and children. We can see if Israel doesn't measure up as an appropriate bride for Christ, Israel could be replaced by a bride who will be worthy. Esther was such an example and she also stood up for those that needed saving from Haman who was a type of Satan.
I think you talk too much about every thing but the scriptures! He puts his own thoughts and words upon the characters in the scriptures, that is assumed. Too much of about you and your opinions.

Thank God for women (and men) like Esther......there are many, certainly not as many as are needed at the present time of history......but, they are out there. Thank you for your efforts, I appreciate them.....I'm also grateful that I don't always agree with your view, it keeps me coming back to hear and think. Thank you again
I've heard that the Midrash tradition says that the king wanted Vashti to appear without clothes.
My daughter is named Hadassah, because she is a wonderful woman
Curious why didn’t Esther live with the King since she was the Queen?
Women's and men's quarters were separate.
Amém brother! You nailed! I had one of this kind of a husband! I did acted just like her! The cost was high! But I kept my personal worth amém
I would have loved having you as a “Compañero”! Great story about Los Testigos de Jeováh.
Thought President Benson's time to serve was right and know the world will go especially crazy just before Elder Oaks goes in unless President Nelson's out lasts him.
I had to chuckle when you said Fasting is a sign of mourning. I heard fasting is mourning! Yup!😅
Ironic that the names would mean such opposite things in each language almost like you can’t actually be lulled into the comfort of the new culture as long as you remember your true language that to be Ester only would be hiding who you really are and being only Mortici would be a bitter loss of being a covenant people
It's funny that your teaching us about Esther, because my name IS ESTHER.
Amen
I know that women have purification rituals, but did men have to go through any purification rituals or was it just women?
Think everyone should listen to ESTHER STUDY BY HAROLD CAMPING ON YOU TUBE..The bible uses historical events to reveal spiritual meaning
She knows the King to be a drunkin fool
Does a talent weigh 75 pounds????,
Isaiah for.tells CYRUS. Esthers Hisband is King Ahas.Cyrus, NOT Cerxes.! ( Ahasuerus). ODL
Mordecai got his people in trouble and yet instead of telling the truth to the Jews, he pushes Esther to risk her life to clean up his mess?
If there had been community property then maybe the king would've thought twice before getting rid of Vashti. 😂😁
I think you talk too much about every thing but the scriptures! He puts his own thoughts and words upon the characters in the scriptures, that is assumed. Too much of about you and your opinions.
Very knowledgeable, but also less positive about people than I like. I would also prefer less speculation. Had to unsubscribe.
