    These fights are far more cooler and these than movie fights. I believe this does a better job of showing how brutal and resourceful warriors are, as they're not just striking with weapons, they're making use of their shields and even their bare hands. • @timothyhines6220
      @timothyhines6220  2 года назад +37

      The stamina requirement is huge. At practice we strike a target nonstop for a specific amount of time and just 60 seconds is rough. When you put on padding and armor then it gets exponentially harder. Strength is needed to ensure you can still hit hard and fast even with the extra weight. The camera work is just me trying to get at an angle where fighters are facing each other (they move around a lot, so one fighter will block the view of the other unless I constantly move with them)

      The rules differ depending on the host of the event (in this case it was the St Louis Legion of Honor). I was setting up camera gear, so I missed the meeting to go over what was and was not allowed. I expect they went with no gap shots, no neck shots, and no strikes to the back of the knee. Three points of contact with the ground count as a down. It was a demonstration event rather than a competitive event, so I don't think they had any special regulations on armor and weapons (some places will check the weight/dimensions of weapons and the historical accuracy of gear)

      I honestly don't know if Curtis, Kaylee, Zolo, Zach, Sean, Ashley, Adam, Dan, or Joe had any martial arts training at the time (I would guess Adam might). We have since starting training various martial arts techniques (mainly throws) at the dojo where we train. People with existing martial arts knowledge tend to do very well in this sport, so you should definitely try it out :D

    Lol these full contact fights are fun to watch but I see a lot of people in the comments saying how it's realistic... this is by no means a realistic representation of medieval warfare. There's no skill at arms, its just blind swinging, hugging, and pushing people over. The armour used by these guys (in battle of the nations style) is also frequently made of titanium instead of steel, and the padding is packed right out in order to soften what looks like really painful blows, but in reality aren't. The person who said it's armoured wrestling is spot on.

    I cannot tell what era of armour this is trying to emulate.... The overall look somewhat looks like it is re-enacting late 14thC plate but there is someone in late 15thC German Gothic Pauldrons and all the helmets are non historic, so called Grython helms

    • @timothyhines6220

      This is a demonstration, so I don't think they're enforcing authenticity rules like they would at an official tournament. Usually they would require the kit to match a specific period/location. When they go to tournaments they need to prove their gear is based on an actual historic design

    is there an advantage if you fight with a "dull" sword? Axes and hammers i can see the adgvantage, but can you do the same damage with a sword?

    • @timothyhines6220
      @timothyhines6220  Год назад +1

      The standard sword is not a great choice for melees. It's ideal for duels where you want to strike for points, but the force of impact is spread out across the blade, so it deals less damage than a weapon with a point. A greatsword can deal good damage due to its weight, but it will tire you out. Most fighters use a falchion, where there is a point on the blade to focus the impact. It has the advantage over axes and polearms in that your opponent cannot grab the blade (they could grab the handle of an axe and make it essentially useless)

      @@assassinmanx6128 To be fair, these _are_ demonstrations for sport that use dulled weapons. Longswords and greatswords could be used against plate armor by means of sharp thrusting motions or weighty cleaves (this being specifically for the greatswords). There were also openings in armor -- the neck, elbows, knees, etc. -- that could be hit with swords. A few good hits with a sharpened, well-tempered blade was still very capable of killing an armored opponent.

    Is there a rule that if i hit u a vitale spot unarmored with the weapon u stop? If not It makes no sense. I mean weapon are obv not sharpened so if im able to penetrate Ur armor with a Blade and hit, for example, armpit or neck does the fight stop and i win?

    • @timothyhines6220
      @timothyhines6220  2 года назад +2

      It depends on what rules are in use. We typically prohibit strikes where there is no armor and shots to the neck or the back of the knees. In the last tournament I went to they said gap shots were allowed, but frowned upon. I've heard they are encouraged at other events. The ref might sit someone if they break the rules of an event, but it's not very common. If you're dueling then you win by points and essentially everything else is based on downs (three points of contact with the ground equal a down)

      @@timothyhines6220 thanks for the explanation that answer many other question i had, but the question Is: if i strike in a way that in a real duel can be considered lethal, do the Referee stop the fight? Let me know, thank you anyway!!

    • @timothyhines6220
      @timothyhines6220  2 года назад +1

      @@grinofficial2727 The duels are based on the number of valid strikes (metal edge with sufficient force) rather than where they land. A strike that would be considered lethal would likely have the ref stop the fight and disqualify the fighter depending on the rules. I saw a duel where one opponent used a thrusting attack, an illegal move, and the ref ended the fight immediately
      We avoid neck shots because they are extremely dangerous. The ref will generally yell at you if you're getting close to landing one and they will ideally stop the fight if you do

      @@grinofficial2727 Hi, you should check out Pursuing the Knightly Arts and Harnischfechten fights. It's a category based on historical treatise that actually fight by attacking the ennemy gaps in the armor. They do it in a more "relaxed" way than here to avoid stupid injuries.
      Harnischfechten is very impressive because fighters uses their armor to parry strikes and use advanced armored grappling techniques to take their opponents down
