Yep, the three big rules are: 1. No thrusting 2. No strikes to the back of the skull 3. No strikes to the back of the knee There are more rules, but they depend on who's hosting the event. Back in 2018, my original team allowed hooking opponents with the beard of the axe. We don't allow that anymore, but theoretically you could attend an event that doesn't use Buhurt International or IMCF rules

Since you're not allowed to stab, im not sure if many of the HEMA techniques apply. The IMCFs ruleset differentiates between longswords and greatswords / greatfalchions (greatswords are heavier and longer). Though you are not allowed to touch your or your opponents blade during combat, so people usually prefer twohanded axes for grappling. There is a longsword 1vs1 category though, Timothy Hines has some videos from the fights of the IMCF Worldcup in Mexico 2024 and Carnage 2024. In duel categories people usually wear lighter and nimbler armour, this might be more your thing.

The four dueling categories are sword/buckler, polearm, longsword, and sword/shield. I haven't seen one for mace, but it's one of my favorite weapons (the sword always has an unpleasant vibration when you strike) Maces mess up armor pretty quick, which = repairs (we have a size/weight restriction on them). They're definitely more damaging in this scenario since thrusting attacks aren't allowed

Yep, Nicholas Homa is one of the best in the world. He took gold in sword and buckler and silver in shield and sword at the 2024 IMCF world championship (absolutely insane stamina to compete in two categories at the same event)

Swords are not effective vs plate, that's exactly why maces were invented. In an absolutele pinch they would grab a sword by the blade and use the crossguard as a hammer in a technique called a Mordhau. When fighting against plate you either use a polearm to put a lot of momentum in a trike or you wrestle and try to get a dagger in somplace vulnerable like the armpit, the neck or the eyeslits.

They aren't allowed to thrust with swords since the blades don't bend. Thrusting attacks with a sword would be fatal. Maces do tons of damage to armor, which is why my team doesn't practice with them (it makes for time consuming and costly armor repairs). We use them for competitive matches though. There's a size/weight limit for maces because they deal so much damage. A true warhammer would be devastating
