Hi.. Do you have contact with litter-robot? I badly want one but not available here in Dubai. My son just had a cat a month ago but truly at the end of the day it's me who does most of the scooping 🙄 I really don't want to do it anymore. This puramax is available here but I've seen reviews similar to yours. It's just not worth it. I really like litter-robot and also I hope they add a removable flap .. cos our cat likes the flap it seems

For litter pouring, there is a maintenance mode, which makes it rotate up so that the opening faces upwards. It is a fairly recent update to the app. You can also use this mode for wiping the insides of the globe.
I didnt realise the leaking problem, I guess my cat isnt peeing at the edge.

I have the PETKIT PURA MAX and I absolutely love it. It honestly has great odor control without the deodorizer. You just need to buy it separately as it’s not included with the litterbox it’s called PETKIT N50 and you place it in the small area on the red top of the trash compartment. Even when opening there’s no pungent smell. For the rest depending on how your cat pees (standing up, more to the side) it can leak or if your litter isn’t high enough and you have a very enthusiastic digger. Most of the errors are actually by bad use of the litterbox, it’s unfortunate that the company themselves doesn’t give clear instructions. For example the trash compartment is only supposed to be opened during maintainance mode or when the litterbox is off. Otherwise it will detect the traah weight as a cat. But once you’re aware of all these little things it’s honestly the most hands off product. I don’t even use it automatically but I just look at the notifications and based on that start the cleaning cycles myself. It seems to be less stressful for my cats than hearing it clean all day.

I’ve had the pura max since June and it’s been great. No leaks or any complaints. I know the first ones had a fiber interior that was upgraded to a rubber lined one after initial complaints about it leaking. I absolutely love mine, I use to scoop 4 litter boxes which was a total pain. I’ve been considering buying another one but would like a slightly larger model for my huge bob tail and maine coon

Hmmm, I just got mine very recently and it came with a fibre bottom. It was the latest batch apparently. In fact the rubber liner appeared in their initial launch videos; so I don't think the rubber liner came 2nd?

Thank you for all the reviews, Mallory - they are much appreciated. I know they take a lot of work and you are very thorough in your explanations and testing - I can also tell you are trying to be as impartial and objective as possible which is so helpful in this landscape of sponsored videos. I find your videos very helpful in making my purchasing decisions.
I was aware of the leaking issue prior to purchasing two of these Pura Maxs, and was keeping my fingers crossed my cats don’t pee in a way that will cause leaking - so far no leaking for me for the 14 lb cat who’s using it. I’m waiting on the older 10 pound cat to get comfortable with it. I have the same fabric liner as you do. In your video, you have a good shot of a pee clump right on the border of where the litter liner meets the barrel, so it looks like your cat might be sitting on or near the front opening facing out to aim pee at that location. I agree it’s a design flaw for Petkit to not take that into account. Other owners have been able to train their cats to go farther in which solved the leaking as they were then voiding inside the liner area instead of the edge, but that will depend on how cooperative your cats are 😸. Other workarounds were to permanently seal the liner edge using silicone caulk, knowing you can’t easily remove the liner for cleaning (but still possible to remove for liner replacement if needed, just have to scrape the caulk off). For my trial period, I chose to seal the barrel slits from the inside using tape so any leaks wouldn’t run down to the base, and put a cat pee pad under the liner just in case. If it does become a problem, I may caulk the barrel slits as well as the liner edge, as I like this box a lot.
Petkit made a sifter cover to help with emptying litter: ruclips.net/video/o8FITBwirxg/видео.html. I believe the deep clean mode in the app the empties the barrel twice, but I suppose you could run the clean cycle as many times as it takes to empty the litter into the waste bin. I’m waiting for my order to arrive:

I also ordered the upgraded litter catcher from Alibaba as another user found it caught more litter than the mat that came with it: www.alibaba.com/product-detail/PETKIT-Cat-Litter-Secondary-Capture-Collector_1600512083012.html
I’m using Okocat original, not using the deodorizer spray or deodorant tablet in the waste bin, and still am running the clean cycle manually until my cats are fully accustomed to the PM (so waste sometimes sits for 15-30+ mins, they are also good at covering the waste) - no odor, and the box is very clean without any streaks (letting waste clump /dry longer seems to help). I had no problems setting up the app. So far my experience is positive, but I’ve also had a lot of help from the Facebook Pura Max group. My prior automatic litter box experience was with a litter robot several years ago which I hated and threw away. I am including all this information in case you or other reviewers find it helpful. Thanks again for all your hard work on this channel, Mallory!

Great review Mallory. I bought the Pura Max about 12 weeks ago and absolutely love it. I didn't even know leaking was a thing until I saw your review. I have a 7kg British Longhair and no issues with leaking. I use Worlds Greatest cat litter green clumping. I think the leaking might definitely be related to the litter, as the litter I use clumps extremely fast (made from corn). Urine wouldn't be able to reach the liner before it has absorbed into the litter in my case. Or as someone else mentioned, could be the cat is urinating right on the edge of the liner, doesn't want to get right into it etc.
I removed the deodoriser, and the round access panel on the side which holds the deodoriser. It made my cat more comfortable getting in, with an added porthole on the side he can see out of (he's actually jumped out of it twice through the side porthole, so he has the main entrance plus emergency exit now haha). The deodoriser scent is strong, off the charts strong for my nose, so it would be 1000 times more powerful to a cat, likely too much I expect. Would definitely not purchase with deodoriser if I was buying again. It also takes a bit of room inside, so he has more space now.
Took about 2 weeks for my cat to switch over to it, with it sitting next to the old litter tray to get him used to it. Finally one day I switch them out, we had one accident on the floor near it, which I picked up and put in the Pura max, showed him, and he has used it since.
The app is pretty good and shows times of use, average duration, cat weight, you can put it into sleep overnight (cleans in the morning if used overnight to avoid waking house up). Also has configurable waiting time before cleaning (I set mine to 25 mins).
I was fully expecting you to rave about it, as I have been so happy with mine, definitely won't be going back to a normal litter tray, but have kept the old one as a spare.

Thank you for this honest appraisal - this is why yours is such a valuable channel! Now, a couple of points ...
    - when loading litter from the 20 pound jugs as attempted, pour the litter into that small opening like you would motor oil - with the spout at the top and using one hand under as a pivot as you tip the jug in. This should keep most of the jug outside for most of the pour.
    - when cleaning out the device, you get to do it against absolutely amazing scenery. Focus on the positives!

It might be worth updating this review as they have made changes to the unit. We just purchased one recently about 3 weeks ago, and much of the concerns mentioned have been addressed. The leaking appears to have been fixed with a new bowl design that adds some shielding around the liner (which is where the leaks were coming from). There's a shield you can place on the orange hex strainer if you need to do a full litter dump, and they have various purchasing packages that can come with the N50 deodorizer block that goes in the waste bin chamber. Also I'm not sure if this was available in the app when you reviewed the unit, but there's a Maintenance Mode that rotates the bowl so the opening is straight up for adding litter to it easily.
Aside from having to get our cat used to it, it's been running great so far.

I have this litter box and haven’t experienced any of the same issues she has. Mine doesn’t leak, it has a maintenance mode that puts the drum opening straight up for adding litter and I’ve cleaned mine a few times since getting it this June and I really don’t think it’s that involved. I wipe down the insides with Clorox wipes and gloves between full cleanings with a litter change. I’be been thinking of buying a second one. I’m disabled and use to scoop 4 litter boxes that would cause flare ups and increased pain. This litter box is better than what she’s showing here.

@@brokenwrench404 thank goodness you're having a good experience! I can't remember where I wrote it, or if I deleted it because I tend to ramble (in case you didn't notice! Also, I'm hardly a great writer) but I was thinking it's a shame if these automatic options end up being more work because it would be so helpful for those with disabilities/mobility issues. My kitty has started to prefer going in the garden so, weather permitting, I can go a week without having to change the litter anymore (thanks pus!)
For some people, having a pet is interaction with another living being and it's sad if some couldn't even have that😕 I'm going on again, but I know even if mine was working ok, I'd be hovering over it looking for problems after hearing that other users have had bother - truth is, I just can't be trusted with a litter box that's a little fancy!😄
Very glad it's not everyone's experience and hopefully, this is the start of better design, reliability and soon enough lower prices. Then hopefully, we can all find what works best for our situations 😸

I wish someone would design a larger automatic litter box. These guys are 6 months old and they are 9 lb each, not overweight at all. The box we had when we adopted them 3 months ago was wide and shallow and they got used to using a big box. I replaced that with two Modkat XL boxes leaving the top flipped open and front entry so there's a lot of air flow. That seems to be working okay for the moment. If you have a different or better solution I am open to it, I have underlying asthma that is usually not an issue but I was very sensitive to the Okocat litter, It made me miserable. We are back to using clay litter now, Dr Elsey's per the recommendation of this channel.

I had a litter robot open air, and I threw it away after the sensors which really are in a silly place. They got damaged with litter dust even though I tried to keep clean. I was sent another sensor for me to replace, but I couldn’t be bothered. I’m looking for a new one , and had looked at this one. But I thought the way the wastes was removed looked like it would get very dirty, and then to see that this one leaks the urine……😢that’s a big no no for me. Thanks for the review.😊

I have the pet kit pura max its great, since this video was made they must have updated it as you now have an empty litter function via the app with the use of a sheild you place over the grate/comb, they also provide 2x grate/combs for different litter types, Also I can comfirm there is little to no odors from this unit ..the waste bin lid works very well, my 2 cats dont mind the odor atomizer as I have it set to only work 3 x a day ...its more for when your litter is maybe a bit old and ready to be changed, I havent had any leaks yet, as my cats tend to dig a hole and are pretty good at aiming at it, I have one cat thats a kicker and this unit actually keeps most of the litter inside , one thing i did to make it better at removing all the clumps is the grate/comb is ment to swivel back and forth freely but with my unit out of the box was binding up this left the grate open slightly and let small bit through, the fix was to remove it and sand down the end pins slightly so that it could swing easily.

It's almost never $699. They have regular sales and coupons bringing it to about $400-450. I have one and I've been lucky enough that my kittens don't use it in a way that causes leaks. It's a shame that it has this flaw because otherwise I've been very happy with its performance especially compared to an earlier LR3 we had.

I had to get rid of my litter robot due to series issues. Brought a meowant tray and although it was good in most areas it leaked pee and had to return. Then ordered another brand and the app didn't measure weights accurately at all and it only self cleaned about 30 percent of the time so had to return that too . Now I'm at loss as to what to buy 😢

We’ve got the Pura Max, haven’t seem to have any leaking issues.
Thought our bigger of our 2 Siberians sometimes either doesn’t turn around or just doesn’t go in and poops straight on the mat out the front or over the edge of the front on to the matt.

Because of the price I did hesitate to buy it but now I can say no regret, the product works great and my cats look happy with it. Since I have it, I just need to replace the filled bag every week and clean the inside of the product every 4 weeks. I especially like the App which allow us to check if the cats are doing ok when we are away for vacation. During this time, our friends or neighbors taking care of the cats have also less work to do…

It has a different mat which is complete rubber.
The new generation have the mat you had, some kind of textile.
We didn't had ever a leak problem with the rubber mat.
But.. After one year of usage it got really worn out - and we got from customer support a new mat for free - the same you have from the start - the new textile one, but not yet installed.
Seeing this how leaky it seems to be, we would like to keep our old rubber version :(

Knowing that mine is fearful (like for her bowl and PETKIT fountain it took her two days to be a little comfortable!) Now it’s okay, but the litter box is something else, in addition we had to put it in another room because where there is its litter box there is no place!!! I’m a little afraid to have bought this for nothing even if I think it’s going to be fine especially since they worked on the problem of urine leakage (by the way to know if it’s the old or the new version, under the hood on the right above the trash the cog is white now while before it was red/orange)

I have been using it for a month. The machine looks huge but usable area for cat to stand or move around is very limited. My cat is 3.3 kg and is just ok inside it. At the beginning, he avoided it as it was small and the fabric tray was soft and felt unstable & unfamiliar. Luckily, he adapted to it slowly and I do not get the leak issue. I think it depends on the way cats urinate. By the way, I use tofu cat litter and set delay time to 3 minutes for the litter to clump properly before the dumping and inside is a lot cleaner than yours. I think they do a good job with lining coating. So far so good though.
I just found an accessory that I could attach to the sieve when I want to dump all cat litter. Seems very convenient. I am thinking about getting it.

Glad I watched this. These automatic boxes seem like they are a nightmare to clean. The convenience of auto dumping the waste is def outweighed by the inconvenience of taking these auto boxes apart. And I think scooping throughout the day is good for keeping an eye on the health of the kitty's poos and pees. Yea and leaky box would def be a deal breaker. I suppose you could stick a potty pad in there to absorb the urine but why even bother given the cost of the box and other options available at that price point.

A comment on the filling. There is a maintenance mode that spins the door up so very easy to pour in clean litter. Does take a bit to get used to since you have to rotate it back down to see if you have the right amount. But after a couple times becomes quite easy. Thanks for highlighting the leaking issue. Will definitely watch for this with mine. So far no issue though. Also for price. They frequently run sales and I got mine direct from them shipping after taxes for $430. I agree still a lot. But a far shot from the msrp some are referring to in the comments.

Yessssss. I have the petkit puramax. My cat loves it. I've had it for a year but if you don't keep enough litter in the box, the cat can and will claw at the bottom and will create holes in the bottom which is where it leaks for me. You can always clean the bottom often to avoid build up or mold.

I’ve had mine since June of this year and it’s been a godsend. I use to scoop 4 litter boxes and it was a nightmare being bent over for that long while breathing in litter dust. Even the dust free ones have some dust. I know they upgraded the removable platform inside to one that was a heavy material and rubber lined after first run model owners complained about leakage. Maybe they sell those separately. I’ve been thinking of getting a extra to rotate in with cleanings so I can soak the dirty one for longer times

If you have a leakage, just use less of your used litter. That should fix the issue. Normally the seal is tight enough that nothing will leak through, but if too much litter is in the box the mat gets pulled down and the seal isn't thick anymore.
