For my office, I've bought 3 Apple Studio Displays and, this week, we got a Viewfinity S9 for a worker. We got the Samsung at a huge discount based on a Black Friday deal. I was thinking that it would be comparable to the Studio Display (which is not on sale). OK - for our office the S9 is much worse. Comparing the build quality is night & day. The Studio Display is way (WAY) better quality. It was easier to set up. The sound is amazing (although these are work computers so we don't really care about the speakers, TBH). Picture quality is similar but the S9 has a yellow tinge that we can't fix. We may need to mess with the settings. Not sure. For our office, Studio Display is 9/10 (it loses a point from the price). S9 is 6/10.

The main factor I will consider is that you can connect a PC and a Mac and switch between them. If only Apple allowed for more inputs! I was surprised by how close they were after calibration; initially, the Samsung looked washed out.

Thanks, Joe, for the 2nd video.
Adding more perspective for Apple Studio Display.
If you are a Windows user, Display Studio won't make sense.
If you are a Mac user, ASD is the only 5K retina display that does justice to macOS. It renders beautiful, crisp fonts and colors and supports macOS' true tone colors, which adjust automatically based on ambient lighting conditions.
Just bought the Apple Studio Display (ASD) a few days ago.
Brightness is 600 nits, which is excellent, and I usually run it at half brightness level.
The camera is okay, but not the best. I'd probably use my Logitech camera for calls instead of the in-built one.
The speakers are better than most found on monitors.
The build quality is impressive. It looks, feels, and works like an Apple device.
I went for the glossy display with a tilt-only stand. I didn't think spending extra on the height-adjustable stand or nano-texture was worthwhile as there are other ways I can play with the height (riser, table height, etc.), and I don't have any direct sunlight hitting the display, so nano-texture wasn't needed.
I also read (no direct evidence) that nano texture coating requires additional care and is prone to scratching.
I was waiting for the launch of Samsung's Viewfinity S9 (5K 27 inch). After its launch in some Asian markets and price of over $1,300 - as a Mac user, it made sense to buy the Apple Studio Display for the cohesiveness with the Apple ecosystem and the fact that it will just work. You don't need to set/tweak settings. Plugin the Thunderbolt cable & supply power, and you're ready.
The Studio Display also comes with firmware updates and has an A13 bionic chip (used in iPhone 11) embedded in it. Apart from being fancy, they have not fully captured the placement of this powerful chip (maybe it's used for the web camera, cooling functions, or spatial audio of the speakers).
I also considered buying the LG Ultrafine 5K display (half price of ASD), but given it's 6 years old and most LG panels from that era suffer from the pink hue issue, I decided against it.
    Some other notable mentions:
    a. can control speaker volume from the Apple keyboard
    b. can adjust screen brightness from the Apple keyboard
    c. the ambient light sensor is on the far left on the top chin of the monitor, so you can mount your own web camera in the center of the top chin without worrying about blocking the ambient light sensor
    d. In India, this monitor ships with a 15A power plug, so you need access to a power plug light point
I'll keep adding stuff here as I learn more and use it as my daily driver.
ASD's price is obnoxious, but most Apple products are priced that way. If you spend many hours in front of your macOS screen, ASD is an expensive but makes-sense choice for Mac users.

    • @joekongsan
      @joekongsan  Год назад +3

ASD worth the price. It is the best choice for mac user. I also don't want something fancy but a good monitor. smart functions make me feel upset after I using this like a week.

@@joekongsan agree, the samsung isn't that much cheaper and im glad i bought the ASD. it just works, i don't need the extra stuff. i got the one with the vesa mount and the height/tilt is not an issue.

Listing all S9's features that hasn't in the Studio Display and the screen calibration achieving so close results is what I was looking for. Thank you! But, the lack of the Studio Display's fidelity sound on the S9 makes me still thinking on the Apple's device. If S9 comes much cheaper, under US$ 700, I can thin about it. More than this I prefer to invest on Apple device, knowing that I can sell it later with a goo price, if I wish. But, I'm thinking now... for the monitors getting so close in brightness and colors, didi you downgrade the Studio Display on the calibration section?

I tried out two other 5K monitors that use the same panel, the ViewSonic VG2781-5k and the Rich Vision RV100. Both had a noticeable graininess on the screen surface due to the coarse matte texture, especially when reading documents with white backgrounds and black text. Does the Samsung Viewfinity S9 5K have the same issue?

@@bernaferrari Then a 5K matte screen is contradictory; the PPI of a 4K matte screen matches the granularity of the matte, so they don't interfere with each other. However, in 5K, the granularity of the matte is larger than the PPI, leading to a very odd visual experience.

How about compatibility when you connect the computer? Is it as fast as the ASD or does it take more time to connect and boot up? I’be tried several 4K monitors for mac but they all take a while for Mac OS X to “get used to” and scale everything right. A lot of the time, the dock in Mac OS X takes some time to show up or end up in the right place.

Very nice review - concise and with pretty much every piece of information I wanted.
I wonder about that brightness control from better display app being different from what the in-display settings sets. If that was DDC control, that should be a change made to the same thing unless betterdisplay simply made a dark overlay without affecting backlight brightness on the monitor itself... Did you try something like Lunar app? It will tell you if you are running DDC control or just software overlay to control brightness.

Great video. You can clearly see the matte screen does it's job great.
I wonder if you compared the S9 vs a Matte ASD, if the ASD is still sharper or looks better in terms of colors because Apple did something very Apple like and found a way to remove glare but still make it less matte than other screens
Apple has a big advantage in design and build quality as well as the speakers while Samsung has an advantage in price and the stand flexibility in the box for free with a matte display (assuming you want matte)
If you care about sound quality then it's kind of a wash because you will likely have to buy some external speakers for the S9
I may end up getting 1 ASD to sit in the middle and have that be glossy to watch content on if I need to or for vibrant colors for color grading and then have 2 S9's vertical on each side. If you are wondering what I do I am a software engineer and YES I will use all 3 lol I currently have a 5k 2019 iMac pro and a LG 5K Ultrafine and I feel like I need more window space
This just made my decision even tougher hahaha if the S9 does drop in price in 4-5 months then that might make the decision easier

Unfortunately, I don't have and I don't plan buying ASD with Nano texture one.. But I'm sure Apple Nano Texture should worth the money. You get what you pay for.
By the way, the standard ASD is a good choice and I think you won't regret it. but the LG Ultrafine also a good choice as well. It's really cheap now in the US. I had it last year from Ebay when I was in US for $600. It's a steal!

The monitor would remain off and I would have to restart my computer. I do not like it for that reason.
I wonder if it works better with the new chips on M1/M2
I also experience a weird thing where if I place a light window on my LG and leave it there for a while and then move the window out while having everything else in a dark theme it looks like it has screen burn in which is weird because it’s not OLED
I ll wait until I can see these in person to decide how the Matte finish looks
Thanks for the review. It’s awesome. Someone might eventually do a matte to matte comparison when Samsung releases whatever gag order they might have here in the USA

Maybe it’s the wobbliness, the controls, the speakers… Perhaps I can find a physical Viewfinity S9 in a shop to make up my mind. If I can’t, I’ll probably end up with the ASD, though I didn’t mean to.

i like the flushed glass of my ASD and the aluminium case. one thing i didn't like about my previous monitor (not the samsung) was the plastic enclosure the glass screen sits in. it creaked every time i held it to adjust the monitor's height, and felt really cheap. wobbled too when i typed. the ASD feels premium. and the ports are easily accessible, not hidden underneath or behind the stand.
i use my mac and pc laptops with it via thunderbolt. on the pc you can't adjust the brightness, which is annoying, but i rarely need to, so it's bearable.
