You brought up a serious point that nobody is talking about. The fact that we can get rid of our hubs/docks due to the usb’s on the back is everything to me. It’s coming tomorrow. Can’t wait.
As much as I hate Apple for making is so expensive, I can respect it’s the best display for Apple products and probably making videos. Sick video Kirk ✌🏻
is because by design macos doesn't work correctly with no apple monitors. if you connect the same monitor into a linux or windows machine, the monitor looks way more nicer.
Everything Apple is the only safe choice to mate with something else Apple. That said, I hate Apple. But better displays than Apple’s that are made by other manufacturer’s are tuned and tested regularly with Windows running machines. It’s not true that any data transmission format is consistant no matter which devices are transmitting and receiving. Things like changes in firmware, chip substitutions, circuit design, and changes to macos can easily take a device from Mac-compatible to non Mac-compatible within the lifetime of a device. The hours of troubleshooting and reading forums aren’t worth it. The only sure path to lifetime compatibility is to jbuy a 1700 Mac Studio display., and start stacking books to put it on. Not even a visa mount. Apple is a racket.
One thing that is way underrated is the height adjustable stand. I have a display mounted on the height adjustable stand on a desk in my van. The base is attached to the desk when I am moving, and the thing is rock steady driving down a bumpy dirt road. I have used several different VESA arms, and never found one that would hold its position so well.
I've never had an issue needing to raise or lower 27" 5K iMac previously. I couldn't justify an extra $400 just for a height adjustability option. I'm perfectly fine raising lowering my chair and desk need be. I understand you can't always raise or lower the keyboard, but I'm not picky there. I just got the base tilt model Studio Display today for $1,300 brand new. That was mentally the sweet spot for me. If Apple charged $1,299 by default, these would be incredible displays for the price.
I agree completely, the convenience with buying this to use with other Apple products is great. Auto brightness and 5K is important for me so I am looking at this as well, however I do not find it accurate enough so you do not need to measure it, it still needs some measurement and calibration. But, the biggest problem for me personally is that I need to think about Windows platform as well, as I need that as well for my workflow and with Apple ARM chips and no BootCamp, together with this display not working well with Windows makes everything really difficult.
Absolutely, like any monitor, it still is better practice to calibrate regardless. I'm not sure how well Windows integrates with the display, but it may not be fantastic
This as well as the crispy text is what is pulling me towards the display. The only thing is I am not a creative professional, having a hard time justifying the cost. I am sure I will eventually give in to my desires! haha
Absolutely right. Looked other monitors for months. Then just went for it. The total package for a Mac mini user is not only great, it is essential. I've scaled it to 2048 x 1152. It just looks perfect. Ideal font size for me and still just as sharp. Colour accuracy has seriously haunted me for the last 20 years since I started photography. No more of that nonsense! The only other options for colour accuracy cost twice as much or more. So the price is extremely justified. I'd say the Studio Display is the one Apple product that is actually competitively priced.
All very true, completely agree with you. In fact, I’d say along switch my M1 Max MacBook coming from intel, these have been the most valued upgrades I’ve ever done to my setup
After my Studio Display blew up and was written off I appreciate the 3 year warranty. Mine was only 18 months old. Apple said to me they had never seen a failure like mine. Luckily I have it all caught on camera, very scary, very sudden and the Mac Studio was in sleep mode when it all went wrong. It exposed to me the weakest link in design, the power supply and lack of on / off button. When it all went south there was no easy way to turn it off.
@@DesignedbyKirk I'm still unable to make the video because my Mac Studio is blind now. If your a Mac Studio Display owner and have any issues with the display not awakening or being locked on that's potentially a sign of trouble. Mine had the meltdown 3 weeks after the firmware update
I've been using the m1 max with the studio display, but the issue I have with editing on davinci resolve is that the color, more so contrast and saturation while editing is much different from the export, especially when viewing on the iPhone and iPad. I'm curious what your monitor settings are and the settings for davinci. Maybe my configuration on davinci is off, but I haven't been able to figure out what is supposed to work best. Could you please advise me on the proper settings in davinci to get proper color accuracy while editing with the studio display?
Check your colour profiles in davinci resolve there is some mac specific settings you can change, but I'll note that quicktime does have a colour shift
This is an excellent video. You get extra credit saying “for my use case that, I was wrong and now own and enjoy having a Studio Display. Once you start using an Apple display with a matching Apple computer system it is very hard going back to something else (smile…smile).
That's not because the Studio Display is good (for the price) but because Apple has intentionally bricked macOS scaling for standard resolutions (like 4k). Anyways, I support Apple for doing this, because iSheeps will keep buying whatever they do.
@@Chopper153 Windows doesn't even offer decent scaling on any monitor size... As always, Windows has gone for the compatibility/one-size-fits-all approach. It's half-decent on some resolutions but isn't good on any resolution above 1080p. I use an M2 Pro 16" MacBook Pro as my primary work machine. I built a new 3k Windows gaming desktop two months ago, and I regularly need to use Windows at work as well. I currently have two 4K 27" monitors, and I don't like how they scale with my MacBook, but I don't like how they scale with my Windows PC either. We have massive widescreens at work, and the scaling is terrible on MacOS and Windows. The way I see it, I'm happy that Apple at least offers perfect scaling at some resolutions.
@@ThomasVanheldenIf you want to be really nitpicky, not even Apple offers perfect scaling on all their displays. For example the 15“ MacBook Air has good, but not perfect scaling compared to a 14“ Pro.
@@josuastangl7140 You could be right. I've only ever used the MacBook Pro models (15" and 16"). That said, using a Windows laptop with a high-resolution display is just awful.
What about the lack of HDR support on this display? Do you find that this negatively affects you as a video editor? This is the issue I'm most worried about with this display.
I’m not working on too many / any HDR deliverables right now. And when I do, I have my MacBook which can help. It’s not a high priority for me, but if it is for you, best to look elsewhere for sure
That's it. Imma get me a nice Studio Display, your video explained exactly what I need as a photographer, web developer and graphics person! Thank you, have a good one.
Absolutely agree on everything. I have been using a SD for a month now and my photo and video content has increased A LOT in both quality and color fidelity. Just curious, I can see you had an Xbox on your desk, guess it is now connected to your TV?
Same with me, cheers mate. That's right, more of a productive decision for that, good to keep gaming and work seperate in the end, it's not really good to "work and play" at the same desk, plus having the console at the TV is just much better imho
@@DesignedbyKirk what type of adapter did you use to connect your Xbox Series X to your Studio Display? I'm thinking about doing the same if it's possible.
Yes the glitches are nerve racking. I have a Studio Display at my home desk, but still use an HP Envy and Alienware 34DW in my office for work. It constantly will switch window positions after waking from sleep or pick the wrong resolution on the HP Envy forcing me to disconnect the display again and reconnect, or reboot. It's very disruptive and can happen either when waking from sleep or even when I sit down to work and have just connected everything. I'd really like to ditch the two displays and go for a Studio Display for my work office too.
You know, for colour grading one could get a proper 100% sRGB monitor like one of those ProArt models, which are sold with a colour calibration report, then you can further tune it with a Spyder calibrator. What Apple has going for it is the PPI density which might only be noticeable in text. For images and photography, back in the day photographers were purposely buying lower resolution (not = lower quality) monitors for photo editing. I did like the ASD at the Apple Store but for those starting out I just want you to be aware there are better ways to invest your money so that you can keep feeding your passion till you make the big bucks.
I can’t believe you kept talking about color accuracy and yet never mentioned BenQ ! Their SW series with hardware calibration is spot on in the color accuracy. I do not diss LG, I use one beside my BenQ but for colors they are not even close.
can you turn on without opening the macbook pro? With my old macbook I could plug the thunderbolt cable into the studio display, it turned on without having to open the macbook
I do not have a MAC, but I would like to be able to view things in my IPhone on a big screen. Would the studio display what I have called up on my IPhone?
I wouldn't recommend the Studio Display at all for this kind of use, if you're looking for a bigger iphone screen to stream content, grab and apple TV and you can wirelessly screen mirror your phone. Or perhaps look at an iPad
I have an Apple TV and I pay to have Premium U-Tube. I don’t remember my user-ID or password. So instead of playing U-tube with my ID info I just want my phone UTube to be directly on TV is that what you call mirrored. Please tell me steps I can take to do this. I am 80 years old and my daughters are very busy working all the time.
Hey Kirk! Do you still use just a single Studio Display for your workflow? I noticed that you used to use dual monitors and I'm currently using dual monitors as well but I'm thinking of moving down to just my Studio Display. I think one monitor just looks cleaner on the desk and helps keep to one focused since there's only one screen in front of you.
Hey there, I sure do still use one monitor! It does really help for focus, at times can be frustrating for grading however as I keep having to flip between full screen, other than that, I love it, may pick up a second in the future, but have it off to the side, but can't see that happening any time soon
Awesome to hear that it does help you focus although a bit of a bummer on the color grading issue. I might try the single monitor and see if I can adjust from dual monitors. Thanks Kirk!@@DesignedbyKirk
You should get the new Samsung S9 Viewsonic and compare it. it's $1299 and 5k. I would love to see what you think with it sitting side by side with the Apple Display. ( I am really really wanting the 30"-32" iMac is true and happening asap)
What made you decide on the stand instead of a vesa mount? I like the vesa mount but If you were travelling and a desk didn’t have an opening for mount (say hard up against a wall) then you’re stuck, I think the stand is more useable.
Don't like the look of the Vesa, and I preferred a more complete design, Vesa might be ok for a second monitor for me, but not a fan of it being the primary
Those speaker stands look great! I did not see them listed in your set up list. What are they called and where did you get them? Thanks for the great video!
Diggin the Orbit Key Nest. I have the Orbit Key Desk mat and their key organizer. I've wanted to get the Nest for awhile, I just haven't yet. How do you like it?
I love having mine on my desk, keep a lot of essential items like my SSD’s, frequently used cables and speaker remote in there. Rather than having it all loosely scattered across the desk
Kirk looked at the before, but I noticed that you had an Xbox One before - have you worked out a way to use it on the Mac Studio - or has there been an update since I last looked I didn’t think you could get full frame rate from the studio. Thanks in advance - great desk set up!
I have the Xbox X connected to a TV now it's not a part of my setup, although in future I do anticipate getting a Mac Studio for the setup, wouldn't be connecting a console to this display
I've been wanting this display for a while now. It's a heft to purchase and I currently have the LG 5K2K as my monitor setup to my mac mini and 14 mbp. I do photography and have the same prob as you of the monitor not being color accurate to my macbook.
the one thing I have against the 5K2K, is the vertical letterboxes and relative small screen size you have for consuming content, apart from that, you're golden
Just bought this for App development and video work. Also need a screen that does keep flickering via HDMI like the Samsung one I have that is such a headache.
Hi ! Thanks for this excellent review. I have some questions. I noticed that you have a large window behind you, was there any reflection on the glossy display? Did you consider the nano texture display? Why did you choose the glossy one? Thanks!
Great question and Thankyou. I really don’t like the look of matte displays. Even the one on the studio one, it really degrades the sharpness of the image in my opinion. I don’t get reflections, but mostly keep my windows shut behind me. They are frosted windows and even before this setup, they are never really flattering to have open. I chose the glossy as I wanted maximum quality, contrast and clarity
It is a 5k display, there aren't many other 5K displays out there to compare to, which is half the point I'm trying to make. Except the XDR and the Ultrafine of course mentioned
I have, at work, it's a good display, however it doesn't get as bright, sharpness isn't the same, and all those convenient problems are still present. Good colour accuracy though, better than the LG's
@@DesignedbyKirk Is it mainly when you adjust the desk to stand, or other there other situations? As you know, It’s not a cheap add-on for Australians like ourselves. So wondering if I really need it. I do have a sit/stand desk.
Really enjoyed this video. I've had mine for a little more than a year for my photography and absolutely love it. Curious, do you use one of the built in color presets for editing your films? I so, please share!
Thanks so much for your quick reply! I should have been more clear when I mentioned “presets”. I was actually referring to Apple’s built in settings for the display under preferences. For instance, their one that’s calibrated for photography. They have others with color and brightness calibrated for video, etc. I guessing by your answer, though, that you used the native, out-of-the-box calibration. I understand what you mean by doing your own grading, I was just interested in your starting point, like when you first import your footage into you computer.
I see you have a xbox series X. Did you manage to connect it to the Studio Display? I tried to connect it here with a capture card (Signal 4k60). It works in 4k 60hz, but it has latency that renders it impossible to play.
It would be great to see a proper compare between this and an Eizo cg2700. On paper and experience eizos are always better, but it is not 5k, which i think is the less important thing.
This is a great review. I'm going to buy one. I'm tired of people complaining about the price. Yes, it's expensive. But I'll probably use it for at least five years, so the cost will be dissipated over time. Thanks for sharing your new perspective. It really helped me make a decision.
Really want this monitor, but I also need a new TV. I really wish this had a HDMI socket so I could use it with my consoles. Not even asking for 120hz and VRR etc.
You can utilise a thunderbolt to hdmi adapter, I’ve seen people achieve it before. But you won’t get any audio out of the display. In your use case, I might say the Dough Spectrum 144hz. 4K Glossy monitor might be a great buy!
@@DesignedbyKirk Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check it out. And yeah I have heard about various adaters to use, but I'm also thinking that the cost of those adapters and cables can just go towards a brand new TV in my room. So... lots for me to think about. It would be much easier if the ASD just did it all :/
Do you think the ASD is overkill and not necessary for Software Engineers? I am having the hardest time right now deciding between my Dell Ultra sharp U3223QE and the Studio. The lack of screen real estate is hard to look past, and I am not getting the XDR. Maybe if they release a 32" studio display that isn't $5,000 USD I would pull the trigger.
I’m inclined to say yes, especially if a larger screen size would be more valuable for you. It’s a hefty cost to make that compromise if you don’t see value in the other display quality features I mentioned
@@DesignedbyKirk Well, I bought the Standard glass Vesa mount model, and I love this thing!! After a day, I don't miss the bigger screen at all. This is one hell of a monitor. My eyes are already thanking me.
In dimly lit environments yes, there is a bit of light bleed. (I notice it when the studio display is being viewed at night with no other light sources apart from it)
I agree that it is a good deal, especially if you are all in with the Mac ecosystem. I think the Studio Display is strong in every area except the camera, and for me personally that was not a deal breaker because I am rarely in a video conference.
Thanks for the nice video! - Did you ever own an iMac? If so, which model was it? - I see you are still using the speakers, are u so happy with them, aren't the ones in the display good enough?
@@DesignedbyKirk ok I’m just curious to ask if you don’t use the other speakers, why have them there? They are kinda bulking up your space, if I may say so 😊
Thank you for this video. For someone who has a passion for editing movies/photos -- but no experience or education behind me other than at a personal level / experience, how can I make it professional? any advice?
@@DesignedbyKirk yes. No portrait mode or anything. Pro tip - an open box one is less than $1300 at Best Buy right now. That’s what I did. And it’s in perfect condition. I found your video because I was searching for Studio Display videos to justify my crazy purchase! Haha
Man, you sold me as soon as you talked about having to unplug and even as much as open your MacBook to get the LG display to finally turn on. That’s the reason I’m about to buy one and watching this review. Sold.
I also waited quite a bit before splurging and getting it (same spec as you). And now…. I couldn’t be happier. 😊 Yes, it costs a lot, but there’s also nothing else that offers the same, looking at this from the creative/content creator POV. I’m actually considering getting a second one haha! 😬 Or… wait for a 32”
Very glad your happy too! I would 100% get a 32" Studio display, that'd be awesome, but would take away from the XDR obviously. Enjoy your new display mate!
Similar situation here. I prefer just having this one display setup. When you use this for work purposes it is definitely worth an investment as it makes getting to work much more desirable, just because you will want to work on that display. Definitely not a cheap purchase, but at apple you don't pay for the product but for value, and viewing it from that angle as a business owner, it has definitely helped us creating better client results and allowed us to work on it for longer without struggling with fatigue.
I'll definitely buy this monitor but I'm torn about the stand, would you say the adjustable stand was worth it? I'm 6'2 but I can just put a few big books under it with the basic stand. I'm also a little concerned the closeness of the monitor, as in I like it when I'm further away from my monitor and it seems to me that the adjustable stand would mean that the screen would be closer. What do you think?
the screen is actually further away with the height one not closer as it would appear when you are in a high or lower setting than the middle which you almost certainly will be, its only a very small difference though. The base stand is not even that low its just according to your own setup. You can measure using the measurements apple provides which is what i did to find the ideal height and how close it was to the base stand. My ideal eye sight was about 4" higher than the base stand allows so i priced out risers and such and in the end said screw it i wanted a clean setup so i paid the extra for the height adjustable one and im happy with that for the past 6 months. This video randomly came in my recommended so im here lol.
i had the opportunity to try both standard and nano texture in a local store and the nano was kind of strange looking and the sales person also agreed with my findings on it as well as saying it was very difficult to clean so i chose the standard glass and really its not bad at all given how bright it gets it cuts through any reflections i get with windows behind my work space. I should also note i am 7ft tall (literally lol) so i almost certainly needed the height adjustable but i had to make sure@@mbz5152
That's right, marginally, when you get to the top height, it does move away enough, I have a desk that's 75cm in depth, and I'm 6'3, with the stand, I keep it at a pretty good distance that doesn't cause any srain
I got one about a month ago with a new M3 MacBook Pro to replace an old 27” iMac. Once you use a 5k screen you can’t go back to 4k…they all look blurry.
Thank you for making this VId. Going through the same thing rn. Sad that my Late 2017 is 5K RETINA... so it's hard for me to go backward to a less Monitor ( plus my iMac does not have "TARGET DISPLAY" as the older Macs. Thanks again, George :)
you really do color sensitive work next to a window without a screen hood in the monitor? I am quite confused. I hope it was just a candy shot for the thumbnail.
I close all my windows whenever doing any colour sensitive work, always. At 600 Nits, I haven’t needed a hood as I get no glare or light intrusions at any time. My panelled window shutters, enable my space to be full blackout
@@DesignedbyKirk thanks for the reply. you color grade at 600nits? I thought the benchmark was 120 nits for photos. you know most screens people use cannot reach 600 nits, right? what is the point to color grade at that brightness, I dont get it.
So glad I saw this video! I’ve been wondering about what monitor I should pair with my M2 ultra with great distress 😂. As a premiere pro user, I use the rec709 color gamut and I’m really trying to take the color in my video work to new heights. Ik you said you use divinci, but in your experience, do you find that the Studio Display represents the colors in your edit accurately? Did you need to calibrate the monitor before using it?
What a great setup! In the future I’m keen to get a desktop to have a more dedicated setup. I can’t speak for Premiere as I use Davinci Resolve and FCPX. Davinci I’ve had to do some tweaking, but I’ve got colours to match perfectly in the edit. But FCPX, it’s set out of the box. I haven’t calibrated the monitor, it’s whatever came out of the factory. But in a few months time, I most likely will, just in case of any shifts
The display seems amazing, but I just don’t understand why they limit it to 60hz? After using a lot of 120hz+ screens I just feel like everything is laggy and horrible in 60. Maybe in just imagining it? 🤷🏻♂️
I think 120hz is a nice to have, but something I don't really care about for productivity workflows. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max, no desire for the faster screen
It's probably because the Thunderbolt 3/4 ports cannot carry 5k at 120hz (at least without color sacrifices or other technical trickery). Thunderbolt 5 was just announced - I suspect any new Apple monitor will be using that and finally getting ProMotion.
Outside of the need for color correction, for the cost of the Mac Studio monitor you could have got a Mac 2 mini kept your two monitors, and had 2 computers
Been waiting for the Samsung 5k since the beginning of the year and got tired of it. Took advantage of the EOFY discount and wow. Even if they release the Samsung at AUD$1800 I won't be mad.
You don’t need 96W of power for your MacBook. You could be alright with 20W. 96W is fast charging necessary for people who use not plugged laptops. Also, the monitor gives those 96W of power anyway.
well said, the convenience of plug in and start working it's priceless, the 5K resolution is what works best with mac. only thing I would love to have 120hz in the next version
The comfortability features certainly are very nice, but at the end of the day, it’s just a 2017 iMac display for the same price, but without the iMac. Comparing the colors to sub $500 displays isn’t exactly apples to apples. Particularly for color grading, I don’t think I could justify the Studio Display, when there are quite a bit higher quality monitors out there for less money. But I guess you‘d have to add the cost of the USB hub back in and deduct points for convenience (which is not irrelevant at all), so I don’t know.
@@DesignedbyKirk Oh really it's that much better? And didn't think the LG was $1800. Haven't seen a Studio Display in person yet, so then I might be wrong after all
Really great and helpful video Kirk! I've literally watched it a few times and read through all your comments and your responses, i think i'm sold here. Yes it's still over my budget for a monitor as someone who's not a photography/videography professional (just a hobby), but all your points mentioned are really the pain points im facing right now with my dell monitor. Also, instead of getting another cheaper option like Benq or LG, i think i'll probably upgrade to an apple display eventually, so might as well go for it now haha! Question, been thinking about getting a trackpad+mouse combo too, what are your use cases and do you think the trackpad is worth getting? Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! Think of it as a long term investment you’ll keep for 5+ years in the end. I’ve been using the MX master combo with the Apple keyboard + numpad and trackpad for timeline scrolling / gesture based movement on my right. The trackpad is pretty essential for me, and I often feel slower when working without it. The one drawback I found with the numpad being on the keyboard is that I have to spread my arms a bit longer to use the mouse which isn’t entirely ergonomic. But apart from that, I’m very happy!
It would of been nice to get something unique to this monitor. A headline feature but, what monitors out there at this size have Mini LED? (And at this price)
@@AaronFigFront the LG ultrafine is almost the same OLD screen, I don't have problem to pay $1500 for this but we need MiniLED or something like that, new tech.
This was just what I need. I have had a 27inch iMac for quite a few years and have always loved the display, plus I love the fact that it has integrated speakers., saving the issue of having something else plugged in. From your video it looks like this is going to be the way forwards for me now as I look to upgrading. I haven’t scrolled through everyone’s responses(apologies) but another enticing factor from what I have read Is that the speakers in the display are even better than the iMac , and therefore a another plus for this monitor. Why is that important - well I like to play back slideshows and videos I have created and the iMac does a good job for my needs. I hadn’t thought about the ports on the back of this display so your review highlighted a very useful factor - thank you. I think I’m going to bite the bullet and go for this . The problem now is what road to go down next in my upgrading - Mac mini pro or look at a Studio . Looks like I’m going to have to raid the piggy bank.
Totally agree, if you can see the benefit, and you're not putting yourself more into the negative, and you foresee the future value you can generate from the display, it'll be worth it
6:39 Very easily avoidable problem. Don't keep your MacBook docked and when you need to check colour, move the window to the MacBook. I guess the SD is more convenient, but man, what an expense for what seems such an easily fixable issue
Part of this sounded to me like you were looking for reasons to like it and justify it, honestly. I'm not saying that is the case, it just SOUNDED like that at times. That said, I think the main thing about what makes this display not for most people is not that it's bad, as it certainly isn't, but the price. For people in Apple's ecosystem that can value all the features included, that especially work well with other Apple hardware, this display has a lot of features that add value. If it weren't for the frankly very high price of this display, I think it could be justified for A LOT more people. I think you get an excellent display here, but you pay a premium for it. It's also the best looking and best built display on the market and it's not even close. I can't even find very many other display on the entire market where the housing is made out of metal, and when they are, they are usually butt ugly.
Fair points, I believe with any review of a pricey item that you watch or read about, that someone has paid for, there is always a chance of unconscionable bias to justify a purchase. I do completely stand behind the 3 reasons I listed, and out of all the things i've purchased this year, I still believe the Studio Display has minimised the most amount of friction with my creative work. Completely agree with all your follow up points too, the price is really just the hard pill to swallow, but... what else is there that properly compares for MacOS users, I think that's where we can more so 'justify' it. Unlike an iMac, there is no computer in the Studio display, meaning I can see myself using this for many years to come, compared to an iMac where I'd probably outgrow the performance in a shorter period of time
0:47 oops, from slighting one item 11 months, the Apple Studio Display, to the next in this video, 32UL-950W the next! (Probably need to go out and about more.) Nevertheless, a like and a new sub. I have a newish MS Surface Studio laptop. Would it make a good pairing with this monitor?
Thankyou haha! Honestly, I'm hesitant to recommend the Studio Display to users outside the Apple Ecosystem (not sure if you'll get access to all the "convenient" features, but if so, then yes!
Not sure about that, personally I haven't experienced any 'programs' per say not running smoothly due to the monitor. My only concern has been colour shift

Height adjustable stand for the $1700 Apple studio display?
LG Ergo Stand
My main reason for getting the Studio display is not having to wait for the monitor to wake up. Good Video.
Genuinely almost worth it just for that feature, thanks for watching!
that 5k native scaling and speakers for me 😆
This as well as the crispy text is what is pulling me towards the display. The only thing is I am not a creative professional, having a hard time justifying the cost. I am sure I will eventually give in to my desires! haha
@@GoshDamnBatman i got it in the end and i have no regrets
Your desk setup looks really perfect. It shows ‘simple is the best’ literary.
Thanks heaps!
Yikes never heard of that happening before
@@DesignedbyKirk I'm still unable to make the video because my Mac Studio is blind now. If your a Mac Studio Display owner and have any issues with the display not awakening or being locked on that's potentially a sign of trouble. Mine had the meltdown 3 weeks after the firmware update
I hope apple are able to rectify the problem for ya!
Thanks for the kind words, very right, it's hard for me to go back to other displays all things considered now
That's not because the Studio Display is good (for the price) but because Apple has intentionally bricked macOS scaling for standard resolutions (like 4k).
Gorgeous set up. Does your mx master 3 not stutter / lag frequently?
thankyou, no it doesn't!
I noticed you mentioned you can take calls. Can you make calls as well ? Would like to do this all from once place
Yes!
Is it an app or straight from contacts? Wish you would do a quick video on this. Taking and making calls.
Just curious, How did you connected your speakers now ? I don't think it is mentioned in the video, May be I missed it. Thanks.
Purely bluetooth at the moment, I used to connect them with an optical cable into the dock however
That's it. Imma get me a nice Studio Display, your video explained exactly what I need as a photographer, web developer and graphics person! Thank you, have a good one.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Yeah it's such a shame, still can't really determine if its an Apple problem or just general 3rd party compatability, who knows
Definitely, this is absolutely not a necessity for grading at all, i've ultimately just found it to work quite well in my workflow
I can’t believe you kept talking about color accuracy and yet never mentioned BenQ ! Their SW series with hardware calibration is spot on in the color accuracy. I do not diss LG, I use one beside my BenQ but for colors they are not even close.
I’ve tried it, still honestly not a fan. Have a couple at work and they’re not ideal
@@DesignedbyKirk Honestly I'm quite shocked. Which model(s) do you have at work ? I was specifically referring to the SW models
can you turn on without opening the macbook pro? With my old macbook I could plug the thunderbolt cable into the studio display, it turned on without having to open the macbook
You 100% sure can, I tap the spacebar twice and it turns on, shared that in the convenience section
I want to wirelessly screen mirror view my I phone.
At $1,299, I’d prefer to have better Mac integration tbh. Might test it out, we’ll see
There are actually videos comparing them both. SD is the best option for the money difference.
Cheers! They are the Kanto YU4 speakers with the corresponding speaker stands from kanto themselves
Do you ever flip the MBP the other way up to have the hot air exhaust vent up, or is it sufficient venting to the desk/holder?
Sometimes I do, when working on more intensive projects, but day to day browsing it's sufficient
I have the Xbox X connected to a TV now it's not a part of my setup, although in future I do anticipate getting a Mac Studio for the setup, wouldn't be connecting a console to this display
how do you set up ur MacBook Pro with the display? is it on sleep mode? I've never seen the laptop closed while using the display, that's pretty neat
Depends on the MacBook you have it should do it natively through USBC with the lid shut! :)
It’s called “Clamshell mode” by apple
I've been wanting this display for a while now. It's a heft to purchase and I currently have the LG 5K2K as my monitor setup to my mac mini and 14 mbp. I do photography and have the same prob as you of the monitor not being color accurate to my macbook.
the one thing I have against the 5K2K, is the vertical letterboxes and relative small screen size you have for consuming content, apart from that, you're golden

Just bought this for App development and video work. Also need a screen that does keep flickering via HDMI like the Samsung one I have that is such a headache.
Enjoy! It's a great display!
Does the display support 120hz?
No it does not
In your comparability section you said theirs 100s of other 4k displays, but I thought this apple studio display was 5k res?
It is a 5k display, there aren't many other 5K displays out there to compare to, which is half the point I'm trying to make. Except the XDR and the Ultrafine of course mentioned
@@DesignedbyKirk oh i see! Sweet, thank you for the reply
Great video! Have you try the BenQ PD3220U?
I have, at work, it's a good display, however it doesn't get as bright, sharpness isn't the same, and all those convenient problems are still present. Good colour accuracy though, better than the LG's
Thanks for the review. Do you find yourself using the height adjustable stand often?
Yeah I do, quite a lot!
Thankyou! I don't use any presets sorry not quite! All manually graded
I haven’t given it a go to be honest. But I know it is possible although you get no sound output or automatic source switching
It would be great to see a proper compare between this and an Eizo cg2700. On paper and experience eizos are always better, but it is not 5k, which i think is the less important thing.
So true, I might find my workflow needing a monitor of that calibre soon, so might be in a position to make an adequate comparison
Nothing compares to the ease of use and continuity of staying within the Apple ecosystem. Plus in the words of Steve Jobs the other guys are “UG-LY”.

Excellent point of view...I just purchased on w/o the adjustable stand...havent opened yet..so I think I will return and get the adjustable stand...

Totally agree. It's the best and just for the color benefits alone. How did you connect your XBOX-X to it? Great video review.

Long term yes! But I’ve always loved having a monitor in the centre
I read the blacks look washed out because they’re just LCD? is it noticeable?
In dimly lit environments yes, there is a bit of light bleed. (I notice it when the studio display is being viewed at night with no other light sources apart from it)

I got mine 11 months ago against all reviews and i love it

You sold 2 32” LG’s for 1 27” studio display?
Yes
Everytthing is incredible.. !!
but..WHy Gaming chair.. bro~! ?
Thanks! And because it’s comfy
One of the things often ignored is the brightness. Very few monitors sustain 500-600nits.
Just wish it worked for non-macs
yeah unfortunately the support there for non macs is pretty much non-existent
Outside of the need for color correction, for the cost of the Mac Studio monitor you could have got a Mac 2 mini kept your two monitors, and had 2 computers
Seems like a weird sidestep

You don’t need 96W of power for your MacBook. You could be alright with 20W. 96W is fast charging necessary for people who use not plugged laptops. Also, the monitor gives those 96W of power anyway.
I don’t think 20W would be enough. My 60W LG display would cause the MacBook to say it’s not charging under load
well said, the convenience of plug in and start working it's priceless, the 5K resolution is what works best with mac. only thing I would love to have 120hz in the next version
It’s so awesome, 120 would be a nice to have. But I only have it at the moment on my old 2018 iPad Pro
Compared to my $1800 LG monitor, color wise, it's just leaps and bounds better in every way. If you find a monitor that works for you, then great!
But apart from that, I’m very happy!
is expensive but that's not the problem, the problem is old tech, mini led or something superior is mandatory for the price.
It would of been nice to get something unique to this monitor. A headline feature but, what monitors out there at this size have Mini LED? (And at this price)
5k, miniled, immaculate colors at this price? What have you been smoking? Name a monitor, not just at this price, double, triple the price.
Totally agree, if you can see the benefit, and you're not putting yourself more into the negative, and you foresee the future value you can generate from the display, it'll be worth it
I'm really happy with mine. Best display I've ever used, the only thing it's missing is a high refresh rate.
That would be a nice to have feature!
6:39 Very easily avoidable problem. Don't keep your MacBook docked and when you need to check colour, move the window to the MacBook. I guess the SD is more convenient, but man, what an expense for what seems such an easily fixable issue
but I like having my macbook docked, so undocking it doesn't really solve that problem, and the screen is small :)
I like this setup. Hate that you have one of the best displays closed and docked (macbook display)
thanks, you're right it's a shame I close it, it's a good display
I see you went from dual monitors to just one Studio Display. Has that been an issue at all? Seems silly to buy two Studio Displays.
No, i've really quite enjoyed having the single display, enables focus. I might go back to 2 soon, but it's worked well so far
Unlike an iMac, there is no computer in the Studio display, meaning I can see myself using this for many years to come, compared to an iMac where I'd probably outgrow the performance in a shorter period of time
Insane, down under! Maybe a used one at $500 in two years or the Kuycon G27P 5K Monitor at half the price.
Yeah big pricing! Are those Kuycon monitors just a knockoff?
0:47 oops, from slighting one item 11 months, the Apple Studio Display, to the next in this video, 32UL-950W the next! (Probably need to go out and about more.) Nevertheless, a like and a new sub. I have a newish MS Surface Studio laptop. Would it make a good pairing with this monitor?
Thankyou haha! Honestly, I'm hesitant to recommend the Studio Display to users outside the Apple Ecosystem (not sure if you'll get access to all the "convenient" features, but if so, then yes!
😻fantastic, lots of needed info for me since I need quality monitors and not waste time and money. Thanks ❤😽Kat
You're welcome!
60hz is just a no go for me. So many nice monitors out there with 120hz or much higher these days.
But resolution tho?
Thank you for the excellent review.
you're welcome :)
Very insightful video.
Thanks heaps!
You say "HDMI is rarely used". Maybe this is reason I think the 2016 MacBook Pro was nice with All USB C. As USB C is versatile for everything 😅
it definitely did pave the way for USB C that's for sure!
Conferences. So much easier to just plug in the HDMI cable rather than search for your adapter.
Was reading somewhere how apple programs their computers to not run smoothly on monitors that aren’t theirs.
Not sure about that, personally I haven't experienced any 'programs' per say not running smoothly due to the monitor. My only concern has been colour shift
