A sprinter van got stuck on a mountain road right next to a steep drop off, so in order to pull him sideways away from the edge I wanted to get a little bit on the ditch to help hold my truck. I got a little close and ended up sliding all the way into the ditch and getting stuck myself. After winching the van away from the cliff, I winched myself back onto the road, then pulled up above him to pull him all the way back into the road.

I find it interesting that Casey has a fleet of various vehicles to choose from, similar to Rory/trail mater, to do rescues/recoveries with. You never know which of four or five vehicles will be called upon. While his motto is "I never said I was good at this", it tends to be an understatement as he always gets the vehicle out.

Jeff, as someone who lived in Central Oregon for 10 years, I can't explain how conditions change from a quarter mile, to 200 feet elevation, to shady areas, to sunlit. They do a great job plowing the roads (even neighborhoods), so you can get by with decent tires as long as you keep it on the road. Snow tires are a tough concession if you drive on the highway a lot. 🙂👍

Whenever I did laundry I'd go have a coffee at the cafe right beside it; you get to know people's faces. One winter I left my lights on when I did laundry and of course it didn't start. One of the patrons at the cafe I recognized happened to walk to his tow truck and I offered ten bucks for a jump, this was around 2007 or so. The guy says 45 bucks and I'll do it, meanwhile my car is few cars away from his truck. Anyway, I refused and I took the bus 3 km home, grabbed the company van I was driving went back and jump started my car. I then drove BOTH vehicles home stopping every few blocks to alternate each vehicle forward until I got back home. Those were the days I had some real perseverance and stubbornness.

The "ice under the snow" you pointed out is the tea cup of ice created by tires spinning on the snow. The rest of the road may not have that layer of ice. For this reason I never use the spin out method to try and get unstuck. Rocking is usually better than spinning when stuck. In this case where going backwards at all is a terrible idea, before calling for a winch recovery, I would have placed fir branches under and in front of the tires for some snowshoe-like traction. For a low ground clearance vehicle, I would also remove snow in front of the vehicle so it doesn't cause the vehicle to toboggan and lift weight off the tires. Never trust the edges of roads covered in a lot of snow. The ditches can completely fill to be level with the road and may be several feet deep. Walk over anything unknown before driving towards the edge. I'm speaking from the point of view of a Canadian driver who does not have a winch on their vehicle.

You are not stuck as long as your recovery gear is working and you have an anchor to pull from.😉😉

Thanks for yet another great video, Casey! Always one of the highlights of my day! If you are not good at what you do, Casey, you leave the guys that ARE good at recovery work, a hell of a level to reach for!😉 Just messing with you. You are A+ with what you do! Your sence of alternative thinking and out-of-the-box solutions are amazing!! Keep up the good work!! Best regards from snowy Norway!! I wish you and your family and friends a beautiful Christmas and a phenomenal new year!!

Whenever the phrases, "I never said I was good at this." and "What's the worst that can happen?" are combined, have the video camera up and running! Great RUclips videos are the result...and you are the Boss at it!! Love your channel!!!

I think it is funny, that at 0:52 Casey states that the paved road takes off to the right and the "dirt" road goes to the left. They both look the same tonight :) Another great video and recovery. Maybe I am not good at watching videos, but I enjoyed it.

I'm not good at this is just showing that looking at the problem knowing what the conditions are, and using that knowledge to make the recovery look easier then it is, is what you shine at.

Definitely need to replace that winch. I think that truck would be great for what you're thinking about doing. Glad to hear you want to keep the wrecker as is. I would love a F-150 4x4 around that year.
