    I used to own one of these, and all I gotta say is, the keyboard is soooo good it's so comfortable. I have a new hp laptop but the design and keyboard doesn't compare to the elitebook 8460p

    What is referred to as the "upgrade bay" is where the optical drive is mounted. On my 8560w, I removed the optical drive from the upgrade bay and added a 500 GB hard drive to that spot when I upgraded the machine's main drive to an SSD. I believe HP offered a secondary battery to place in the upgrade bay, as well, but that may have just extended to the workstation models. (Both are exactly the same size, so I see no reason why they wouldn't be interchangeable between the "p" and "w" series unless HP set up the mobo or the BIOS to reject that part when it's used on these. There are always power draw concerns between models.)

    I traded in my retina MacBook 2013 in for one of these. It was a choice between this or a Dell Precision with the same CPU, but 24GB of RAM, 1TB hard drive, and an old NVidia Quadro 2000m workstation class GPU. The downfall of that one was that it was 17.3 inches and I needed to carry it around with me. So I bought the Elitebook, I replaced the 500GB hard drive, with an SSD. The keyboard is amazing, and I love being able to get to all the internals in seconds.

    Wow! I almost got one of these. Instead, I purchased the EliteBook 8560p. Very nice quality laptop that I'm using right now. Has a 1600x900 screen, which works nicely. Keyboard is great quality compared to my past laptops, though I plug in my Unicomp Ultra Classic whenever I'm at my desk. I've had this laptop for about two years now, purchased it at a store that refurbished it, and installed a Linux based operating system (currently using Kubuntu 15.04).
    I would like to say that it is doing well, but a few months ago, I managed to fry the internals a tiny bit. Just a tiny bit. One time, I was about to boot it up when a massive bolt of static jumped from my finger to the power button. Luckily, the computer itself is still perfectly usable; however, the battery can't charge anymore, so it is effectively my portable desktop that is tied to the wall.
    Overall, I've been very happy with my purchase. It seems to be on its last legs due to the unfortunate accident, but it'll have a special place in my heart. Business class laptops for the win!

    We also used these at work around 3 years ago and ive had hundreds come through my hands having imaged the majority! In my job i find that while all laptops have issues, this model was no different than any other so shouldnt be a problem, the 840 G1 we have in circulation now is much worse!
    Those SS USB's are indeed 3.0, and that is the extended power battery, the original is flush to the unit :)

  • @vwestlife
    @vwestlife 9 лет назад +19

    That's a very nice laptop, but I don't like how the up and down arrow keys are squished into the space one one normal-size key, and the lack of a scroll button for the trackpoint.

    • @lmull3
      @lmull3  9 лет назад +3

      vwestlife Those condensed arrow keys seem to be a common thing with laptops these days for some reason. I'm not a huge fan of that either, but I can get used to it if I have to. The lack of the scroll button I think is the biggest flaw.

    • @aryatololHTF
      @aryatololHTF 9 лет назад

      vwestlife Yeah, I also have an EliteBook 820 and it comes without scroll button. But, there is a hack to enable the scroll button with clicking both left and right button simultaneously. I did that hack, but after using it for a while, I guess dragging the scroll bar is way more accurate and faster than using the scroll button (even on my ThinkPad X220). So, the lack of it doesn't really bother me...

    @14:30 typically video editing environment laptops with dual hdds use raid to improve the speed of the "scratch disk". I say that loosely as it's stupid to have windows and your temp video files on the same partition. This was before 1tb ssds were a thing and fragmentation was a serious problem.

    absolutely love my 8460 unfortunately the fan died in it and needs to be replaced, converting it to a Hackintosh and the only thing not working out of the box is the wireless. I just need to get that taken care of and it will be a nice Hackintosh without having to buy a MacBook Pro considering it's got a i5 in it that runs really fast.

    I really love the 8460p. It is one of the best models ever made.The HP 8460p has a few small flaws. If it had backlit keyboard and a scrollbutton. If you are able to. Take a look at the 8460w or the awesome 8560w. I used to have a 8560w but now I have a 840 g1. I miss my 8560w.

    It might be interesting to note that the HD 3000 and Radeon 6470M are nearly identical in performance, the 6470M is just barely more powerful, and for that you get less battery life and more heat. (I have an 8440p with nVidia and an 8460p with Intel, the 8460p runs much cooler)

    I have this model. she is called Haruko. If you are wondering why I am referring to my laptop as she, I have a form of synaesthesia. But was told online that it could be anthropomorphism that I have. I know that I have sound to image synaesthesia as well. Anyway, I have always personified my laptops. Talking about the machine, it is a great model. I have uploaded a few audio videos explaining my synaesthesia/anthropomorphism if anyone wanted to find out the Fulstory. It is probably to do with the fact that I don't have many human friends because I am visually impaired and don't get out as much as I would like to to meet more human friends.

    Very nice video. Just what I needed.
    So, you uploaded this video in May 2015 (a year and half back) I'm assuming the review was done about the same time you uploaded it to youtube. Does it still work?
    I was thinking to get one of these but here where I live it's about 250 Euros so if I put another 100 to 150 Euros I can get a decent new laptop. The problem is that most new laptops in this price range (about 400 Euros) don't come with a GPU or if they do then usually the processor sucks or the display is like 11" or something.
    A friend of mine told me you better wait for a while until you can afford one that costs over 500 Euros because these types of laptops are too old and it wouldn't last more than a couple of months. So I'm a bit worried that I'll just waste 250 for nothing.
    You seem to know a whole lot about computers so I'd like to ask if you'd recommend buying one of these now. I know that how much it will last depends on the previous owner and how much it was used and stuff like that but just a general opinion on if it would be reasonable if I'd expect it to last for about 10 months or so.
    I'd do some 'lightweight' CAD stuff (AutoCAD) with it.
    Thanks.

    I really like the design of that laptop, but that keyboard layout looks like it'd bug the hell out of me. Also no middle button for the TrackPoint? Is Lenovo the only company that understands that?

    • @catgirl_eva
      @catgirl_eva 9 лет назад

      ***** I thought Dell had it on some of their higher end business class laptops. I know my Precision M4600 has a middle button for the TrackPoint and my old Precision M4500 had a middle button as well. Personally, I wish there was an option to not have the TrackPoint on most higher end business class laptops. I never use it and the nub just gets in my way. I basically went from using a trackball on my first laptop, a Dell Latitude XPi, to using a trackpad on my second laptop, an HP Omnibook 4150.

      @JackStavris 9 лет назад

      ***** Oh I didn't know they had it too, the newest Dell I own is a Precision M4300 and it doesn't have a middle button. Anyway I've owned mostly ThinkPads so I use the TrackPoint if I don't have access to a real mouse.

    • @catgirl_eva
      @catgirl_eva 9 лет назад

      Well, the M4300 was basically a Latitude D-series on steroids. I think, for the most part, the only real differences were piece of plastic that went above the keyboard and the lid. The next generation of Precisions are where more "premium" features started appearing. Stuff like the middle button for the TrackPoint and mSATA support.

    • @JackStavris
      @JackStavris 9 лет назад +1

      ***** Yeah I know that, I think some of them like the M4400 & M4500 were just higher end counterparts of the E6500 & E6510.

      ***** In fact, HP introduced this TrackPoint designs in the HP Omnibook series, these laptops are equipped with Pentium or Pentium II, which is probably from 1996 or 97. And the Toshiba Satellite series too from probably the same time period.
