Iran protests: UN raises concern over schoolgirl reportedly killed by police at weekend

- Protests have continued in the northern Iranian city of Ardabil after a 16-year-old schoolgirl, Asra Panahi, died in hospital on Friday from injuries reportedly sustained when security forces raided her school.

Many girls were injured and taken to hospital on 13 October after security forces cracked down on the Shahed high school, where girls had refused to sing an anthem praising the Ayatollah and were protesting against the government.
Later a man claiming to be Asra's uncle appeared on pro-government TV claiming she had died from an inherited heart condition.
The UN human rights office said as many as 23 children have been killed since the beginning of the protests. 'The Islamic Republic has an obligation to protect children’s right to life under any circumstances, and to respect and protect their right to freedom of expression and peaceful protest,' it said.

Were the protestors vandalizing things? If so, the police response should be contextualized when reporting such incidents. In any country, if you go around burning cars and attacking police, you will likely end up hurt or killed. Nothing out of the ordinary here, so let’s not exaggerate or insinuate brutality until more details are known.
