This sounds a lot similar to pi-Hole which I've used before on a Raspberry Pi which is pretty cool that it can block a lot of ads but I find that it still doesn't block as good as browser addon ad-blockers. If AdGuard can block ads as good as my browser addon ad-blocker (ublock origin), then I might give it a try. What I didn't like about pi-Hole is it removed its support for blocklists that browser adblockers uses which made it a lot less effective in blocking ads.
Pi-Hole can't block webpage elements as it can only see DNS queries. using Pi-Hole in conjunction with browser add-ons such as uBlock Origin is always recommended. Some websites also serve ads on the same domain as the content so you can't block those using Pi-Hole or AdGuard Home.
@@TheGreatGod Absolutely. I’ve had a little Raspberry pi zero w running PiHole with Unbound recursive DNS for 2 years. It’s still tanks, and there’s a lot of overhead. I wouldn’t try to ad any other services on it at the same time though, unless you get the new Pi Zero 2w. That has a faster chip. Pro tip, instead of getting a dongle to go from the pi zero to an eth connection (faster than WiFi), if you’re going to build one, AND if you have a Power Over Ethernet (POE) compatible router, just get a POE hat for the pi, they’re SO a cheap. Get a POE hat for whatever pi you have. The kit with POE and an Ethernet Jack built in. No power cables, no eth adapter, just one cable from the pi/hat to the eth jack. So much less clutter! Just remember your router needs to be POE capable.
real question here, isn't adguard a paid service? using the free version have some limitations right? and like some people are saying in the comments, Pi-Hole also have that feature that you said in the end, what would be the pros and cons of using adguard over pi-hole? for the normal people im sure adguard would be a lot more easy to use.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of AdGuard versus Pi-Hole, a DNS ad blocker that does the same thing? Can you configure AdGuard to use a service like Unbound to create a recursive DNS server so you're not relying on 3rd party DNS servers to contact the root servers?
I use dietpi with adguard at work and dietpi with pihole at home, set it and forget both works the same. my colleague uses adguard at home and he likes it because it looks like it has more controls on what to restrict for his kid. havent tested it yet.
Not sure what the difference is with DNS Rewrite. Pi-hole actually does that with the local DNS entereies... Though, with DNS Rewrite, it looks like it might be doing web proxy
You can't block RUclips ads and that's what most people want. Also, there are many websites using similar techniques as youtube (content and addvertismets served using same domains), which will make them still show you all the adds.
Thx for this. Added it to my ESXI / pfSense server and it works great. I found a pretty easy tutorial online for that specific application. Just 1 day in and its blocked over 12k ad queries.
I used Raspberry Pi4 with HASIO and installed Adguard Home for the local DNS server with AD blocking. I recommended you turn off DHCP on your router and enable DHCP on your Adguagrd Home. The reason you can see clients or devices blocked ads. If you enable DHCP on your router then Adguard shows only 1 client or device for ALL devices, I mean all devices in ONE client.
I just got AdGuard on my phone and PC last week, and it's been great. I would be curious to see your perspective on the different DNS request encryption protocols (DoH, DoT, DNSCrypt, even DoQ). I've been going down the rabbit hole looking into them, and I find it really fascinating. Though DNSCrypt does seem like a bit of an oddball, as it only encrypts the DNS query through to the recursive DNS server, not all the way to the authoritative one like the others.
God, I just got it up and running on my Pi 4 from 2 years ago and made DNS rewrites for a few domain names, Thanks Network Chuck. Looking over the logs I can't believe how much Telemetry data Firefox is trying to gather and Google's tracking too, It's showing a full 41 percent of my DNS traffic is now being filtered.
PiHole can do “DNS Rewrites” i think it’s been more than a year now that PiHole added that capability.. it can do everything you mentioned here.. in fact, AdGuards interface looks like PiHoles, but PiHole looks better.. plus mine is setup to use locally installed DNS resolver, with Unbound.. so even quad9, google, cloudflair etc wont see/track my DNS queries..
@@francocastilloAR Actually no it's not slow at all. You can even benchmark it. There's software that lets you compare DNS servers on your local computer. It's WAY faster than any external DNS, ESPECIALLY if the result has been cached.
@@Alegzander1990 I'm talking about the delay when it's not cached. But it is that if it is in the cache, the time it is in it is short and in the end the query has to be made as if it were the first one with all the delay that this entails.
I know this one is a bit old, but I wanted to share a solution to a problem some people may be having. Adguard DNS up-streams not saving. When I was adding new up-stream DNS servers they would not save. I had to add what I wanted, save, and then delete what I didn't want. It looks as though you cannot delete the single DNS that is there by default if its the only one. You can see it in the video - it defaults back to the original. 11.14 in the video.

How could I have missed this upload, but great work and I have used Adguard on my router for couple of years on and off (experimenting and other stuff have made me get rid of adguard) so fun to see people learning others on RUclips how to use this stuff
Imagine telling lusers to run their own ns just to partially block ads when ad companies can bypass it altogether with ease going by ip and browser extensions are far better. Good riddance
Thx Chuck and greetings from Romania. I have already Adguard on my intel Nuc with HomeAssistant server instaled. Works like a charm. Thx for ideas and keep up the good work !
I just set this up on a pi 3B and it works great. Even used DHCP since my router from ATT doesn't allow manual DNS settings. Thank you for this video absolutely clear and now I have a use for my old pi 3B lol
Installed it on a ubuntu machine. Unfortnunately, it has not the capability to block ads on twitch (desktop+mobile) and on youtube (mobile), but it seems to run great on a NAS thats running anyways, I think the average powerdraw is up by like 2w/h, which is marginal. So, the point is: it doesnt help for mobile users if they are just using youtube/twitch, and it doesnt help for twitch at all, but it comes at almost no extra cost if you got a server running anyways, so its way worth it
I use NextDNS as my DNS Server for all my devices and Adblocker Ultimate for my browsers and that extension works so well at blocking Ads especially on RUclips videos along with the Guardio Extension, Privacy Badger Extension and I Don't Care About Cookies Extension.

It's based on why the host act the way they do and why people in general tend to follow them. Now granted most of this is above my pay grade but I have found it very interesting. Basically host with million plus subscribers tend to be very narcissistic, ego driven, type A personalitys. Even though they are very narcissistic they actually have very low self asteem issues deep down. Many suffer from feelings of inadequacy. Many have been ridiculed as children. Their narcissism tends to be a false front they give out to compensate for their internal feelings of inadequacy. The end results of this is most have very few actual friends and suffer from multiple failed relationships. Like I said it very interesting. It's a minimum to make sure you are pulling the most up to date packages, but upgrading your packages is always best practice.
@@ChristopherEdwards0 I tend to agree. I always run 'sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y' when I update. I just wanted to be sure I knew what the commands do and (more importantly) do NOT do, so I'd understand why he ran that in that situation. Always looking for those little tidbits that make the understanding deeper. :)
I have been using adguard for windows for the past 2yrs. I cant live without it
This is perfect! Thank you chuck!
Too advanced for the layman....Yep you are quite a genious...Fantastic.
Here are some examples of what cannot be blocked by a DNS-level blocker:
RUclips, Twitch ads;
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram sponsored posts.
Some websites also serve ads on the same domain as the content so you can't block those using Pi-Hole or AdGuard Home.
will pi zero work for this ,, and if not which is the cheapest one that will be capable of doing this ??
Ty SponsorBlock for blocking the 2 ads in this video about blocking ads.
real question here, isn't adguard a paid service? using the free version have some limitations right? and like some people are saying in the comments, Pi-Hole also have that feature that you said in the end, what would be the pros and cons of using adguard over pi-hole? for the normal people im sure adguard would be a lot more easy to use.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of AdGuard versus Pi-Hole, a DNS ad blocker that does the same thing? Can you configure AdGuard to use a service like Unbound to create a recursive DNS server so you're not relying on 3rd party DNS servers to contact the root servers?
i have the same question. Glad you asked it. Which is better and why?
Pi-holes does not use much ram / cpu
@@Tntdruid pi is also external. your not using any of your cpu/ram.. it will even block the ad's on your phone, etc since hooked to router
Unbound only work with adguard if I install using dietpi. Not on regular pi os. Not sure why.
I use dietpi with adguard at work and dietpi with pihole at home, set it and forget both works the same. my colleague uses adguard at home and he likes it because it looks like it has more controls on what to restrict for his kid. havent tested it yet.
Instructions unclear, now I have no singles near me
Not sure what the difference is with DNS Rewrite. Pi-hole actually does that with the local DNS entereies... Though, with DNS Rewrite, it looks like it might be doing web proxy
I'm on my first steps in logics, algorythms and Linux, but I really like this channel.
You can't block RUclips ads and that's what most people want. Also, there are many websites using similar techniques as youtube (content and addvertismets served using same domains), which will make them still show you all the adds.
You CAN block ads on RUclips with uBlock Origin. I'm doing it right now.
Thx for this. Added it to my ESXI / pfSense server and it works great. I found a pretty easy tutorial online for that specific application. Just 1 day in and its blocked over 12k ad queries.
So cool
Love your videos!
Facts: The best tech videos on the internet and the ONLY videos I don't have to increase the playback speed. Boom.
WOW! Thanks for this man. Tons of request are being blocked now. You will be my favorite networkchuck for ever!
One of RUclips goats 🐐 I am only 15 and I can understand 80% your taking about you are amazing thanks
I'm zaid from Egypt
Agreed! I see nothing in Chuck's vid that convinces me that a move to AdGuard from PiHole is worth the effort.
I do not recommend Unbound. It is very slow.
@thefallenshadow Thanks to that, Unbound can be used, because it would be very slow like with Pi-hole.
But AdGuard don't work on RUclips, same problem on PiHole
I know this one is a bit old, but I wanted to share a solution to a problem some people may be having. Adguard DNS up-streams not saving. When I was adding new up-stream DNS servers they would not save. I had to add what I wanted, save, and then delete what I didn't want. It looks as though you cannot delete the single DNS that is there by default if its the only one. You can see it in the video - it defaults back to the original. 11.14 in the video.
Which version of Raspberry Pi should i chose ? A or B ? Also memory matter (how many gb is sufficent for this tutorial be done ?) Nice video btw
Thank you so much for these piece, Amazon’s amc52T looks to have great prospect
I put this on truenas scale was a breeze and now seeing ads being blocked great video
scam
Applying DNS Rewrites sounds like the most fun way possible to Rickroll people using RUclips on your network.
@6:13 Is it usual to do an update and then not follow it with an upgrade command? What's the difference between the two?
Thanks for the fun videos!
I noticed that as well. Update downloads the latest packages, upgrade installs them. So you are correct he did not upgrade anything, probably just an oversight
How could I have missed this upload, but great work and I have used Adguard on my router for couple of years on and off (experimenting and other stuff have made me get rid of adguard) so fun to see people learning others on RUclips how to use this stuff
If you have AdGuard VPN, you get AdGuard DNS IO service included. Much easier, small cost.
I like your sense of humor Chuck.
Imagine telling lusers to run their own ns just to partially block ads when ad companies can bypass it altogether with ease going by ip and browser extensions are far better.
Good riddance
Pihole does have Local DNS records you can rewrite just like adguard
Thx Chuck and greetings from Romania. I have already Adguard on my intel Nuc with HomeAssistant server instaled. Works like a charm. Thx for ideas and keep up the good work !
You talk about blocking ads yet you CONSTANTLY put ads in your video...lol
Ads are automatically generated by RUclips. Not by creators bro.
I just set this up on a pi 3B and it works great. Even used DHCP since my router from ATT doesn't allow manual DNS settings. Thank you for this video absolutely clear and now I have a use for my old pi 3B lol
Adguard is ruzzian , no thanks
racist much?
@@SL4F russia isnt a race. a bit slow much?
I love your videos NetworkChuck ❤. Every time I want IT inspirations I watch one of your videos l. Keep rocking Chuck
Reminds me of PI-Hole but a lot more user friendly. Definitely a great alternative , Awesome video
So, the point is: it doesnt help for mobile users if they are just using youtube/twitch, and it doesnt help for twitch at all, but it comes at almost no extra cost if you got a server running anyways, so its way worth it
SponsorBlock: It skips the in video ads that we're told can't be skipped.
"You can't block this ad" SponsorBlock for RUclips says otherwise
Finally got it all set up and configured. Nice
I use NextDNS as my DNS Server for all my devices and Adblocker Ultimate for my browsers and that extension works so well at blocking Ads especially on RUclips videos along with the Guardio Extension, Privacy Badger Extension and I Don't Care About Cookies Extension.
What is cool for me is I can host this app directly on my router, no need for external Raspberry Pi or something
POV: You're a brave user .
using adguard since 2019.....
subscriber from india. ❤❤❤
I could have gone without at least part of the first 43 seconds of this video.
I'm not always a fan but I always come away from your videos with new information. Thanks keep it up!
EDIT: My lord. I just cloned a vm. apt updated it. ran the install script. done in like 5 seconds. only gotcha i had was the bind interface from the web post install screen but that took all of 30 seconds to figure out to select the interface IP only.
Thanks for this video! Got mine up and running on my synology using Docker.
Hypothetically, if ad guard's servers were down, would it stop things from loading in browser or would you just see ads?
Thank you for the video. I of course was not able to buy a Pi 4B but was able to pick up a Libre Le Potato to give this a shot with. And it works great.
My wife is currently finishing her PhD in clinical psychology. She is doing her thesis on the behavioral aspects of you tubers that have million plus subscribers. I posted on this video because I've watched a few videos on this channel and I have to say I agree with the findings. There is definitely something that's off with most of these you tubers that on the surface you think how can this guy have so many followers when he comes across as a total duche . Now I know....
ahh yes raspberry pi tutorial when raspberry pi's are in shortage
I stop paying Adguard and move over to Firefox, and install free Adblock or uBlock Origin extension. That works.
Another great video. Love not having ads anymore. Great job as usual. Thanks!
will PI zero work for this??
That was good, and I had a good laugh while watching. Love the humorous inclusion of the ad's and love the coffee addict bits.
In windows 11, mac osx, ubuntu u can encrypt your dns trafiic :D
You should at least do that for your security B)
If u need some kind of presentation of DNS spoofing connected with password harvesting. I've done something like this in the past for university. Remember about HSTS ;)
Hey , Even before your video , I have developed a Raspberry pi VPN modem that takes care of killing the Ads. and YES! I have taken everything that hits my home and gets blocked. Woohooo!....
