Okay, the battle music kinda hits hard Also I totally understand the nostalgia but not nostalgia feeling! I always get it when I’m playing Legend of Zelda: Twillight princess! And you’ve convinced me that this game is awesome!!
I really liked this review. Any review of Dark Cloud 2 singing its praises is fine in my book. However, I would’ve like to see a more gut inducing approach because this game does have that “it” factor. It’s about a boy on a search for his mother, stalked by a murderous clown in the sewers. A fairy book tale wrapped in the mystery of a rainbow butterfly. An apprentice on a quest to carry on the legacy of her master. A sea dragon lost from its tribe but finding a home. An antagonist fighting for the same reason as our hero. And an ancient evil lurking somewhere between the past and present. One of my favorite parts of Dark Cloud 2 is that you can build a town all to your liking and when you time travel you will see what it has become, generations later. It’s absolutely breathtaking. It’s a beautiful game I don’t think anything will ever replace it for me.
You're absolutely right! To be honest, my original script was WAY longer but I had to cut out a lot of stuff to save time. I can definitely talk more about it in future videos if that's what you want to see!
This game is personally special to me too. The art, the music, the way all the weird little mini-games mesh together, there is nothing like it. It's a sweet little thing that also brings me joy and I'm happy it has touched you that way as well!
It's SO bizarre to me that this game isn't talked about more. The whole execution is SO solid, even after all these years. The music, the art design, the voice talent, the world building, the pacing, the story, all the side mechanics. It's all just SO polished and well thought out. I've played it so many times and I'll keep returning to it in my later years. This is the game I recommend to people the most even though the remaster is a bit borked in some areas. But yeah, I totally share that feeling of childhood bliss and wonder for this game that you do. 🥰🥰 I'm so grateful that this game exists and that I got to play it during my childhood.
As a kid without any idea how the world is like outside of where I grew up, Dark Cloud 2 was the adventure story I needed. Being confined in a small town at first then knowing just how big the world is after traveling to the outside world. I cannot put into words the feeling I felt when we got the train running again and I felt what max was feeling when he left the town on this big adventure. It made me want to go on my epic adventure as well! This is why Dark cloud 2 means so much to me. It's the dream adventure a child could only wish for.
When watching this, I felt like listening to an alternate reality me who became a youtube artist. You described my feelings for this game so perfectly that I am sure we both feel the same thing for this game. Great video, thanks for that 😊
The soundtrack from this and dark cloud 1 are my all time favorite in gaming history! Alongside Kingdom hearts, at the time, dark cloud music is something i still listen to this very day and made me appreciate music in games, and music in general! And interesting enough, some people have been remaking some songs from both the first and second game! Turning them into a lofi mix. If you still haven't played the first one, i highly recommend it. I might be even more blinded by nostalgia for the first one, even though i love the second one more. The first game is definitely rough, and can be a bit more punishing at times. But I've replayed both of them an equal amount of times. Always happy to see people show love for an amazing, and sadly, hidden gem of a game!
I remember playing this game as well as Dark Cloud on the PS2 shortly after it came out with one of my aunts and a couple of cousins when I was a little kid. It was one of the games I would watch them play and they let me help them in a dungeon if they need to go do something real quick.
The Xenoblade Chronicles series has recently given me a thirst for JRPGs. Thanks for throwing me a bone to look into! Also, welcome to my subscribed channels! Always glad to add a quality new channel to my feed. Great video! 😊
I know exactly what you mean when you spoke of that feeling in your closing remarks. It’s the closest thing to stepping into a Time Machine and reliving your childhood. Some of the best times of my life. Thanks for the vid!
Amazing video. Extremely detailed orientated and the animations/sketches are HIIIIILARE !!! I 100% agree with this and that scene, along with so much more always makes me choke up like it's nobody's business. This, along with the first one, really sparked my love for JRPGS, anime, RPGs, fantasy etc. I'll never forget, I was 8 years old, had my hands on the first one because of a pawnshop. Loved it. Never finished it because, well, 8 years old LOL but then not what ? 2 years or so later ? I found out the sequel exists (I forget how) and I literally busted out a phonebook (yeah I know LOL), got the landline, and dialed every gamestop I could to find it. Found one that had it for 20$ and begged my stepdad to take me. Told him I'd do double chores for the month as payment. And let me tell ya, the memories I had with that game...I'll never forget. This is probably oversharing, but growing up, I would stay between my mom's/stepdad's and my grandparents because of work schedules. Well, one of my uncles lived with my grandparents because he is mentally challenged. He holds up well but you can't really expect him to live out on his own. He has the mind/mental capacity of 10/11 year old. He would sit and watch me play for HOURS when i would go over. And when he found out there is a fishing minigame in this, he lost it. His favorite thing in the world that he is hyper fixated on is fishing. So he had me teach him how to fish and what he needed to do. He eventually could tell you which spots had what fish, which bait/lure to use, and how to raise the fish. It was perfect. Fast forward 20 years (I'm turning 30 in August and he turns 44 in July) and he now lives with because...grandma and grandpa. But every now and then I'll play the game on my PS5 in the living room and he'll wander out of his room and into the kitchen but once he notices what I'm playing, it's like it's 2004/5 all over again. "Dang Brian you remember we would stay up for hours ! Can I fish ?!" And he'd be right back at fishing. It's stuff like that that really show how much of an impact a silly jrpg has on someone. It's why this game will forever be my most cherished game. Sorry if that was oversharing but your video really brought back those memories and I needed to gush. Definitely got my sub and I'll be binging your videos going forward ! I hope you have an incredible day, thanks again for the amazing video and nostalgia !
Wow, thank you for this comment! It really means a lot. Your story about fishing with your uncle is so wholesome and it shows that games can be so much more than just a hobby. Thanks for sharing. (Also whipping out a phone book to call GameStop is a baller move 😂)
Now that I think about it, I don't think I ever actually played very much of this game. I just wandered around the town and discovered stuff haha. I walked around the big boujie house (I think Max's?) and went fishing like 100 times and that was fun enough on its own!
Yeah Max is a trust fund kid. And yes I would do the same thing! Being able to have that much fun just walking around is a testament to how good this game is
Idk who you talked to, but Dark Cloud/Chronicle is definitely not forgotten. Sure younger people don't know it, but it's legendary enough that almost every spring/summer around E3 time there are rumors that Sony is gonna announce a remaster/reboot/new game, especially on places like neogaf/resetera.
Your absolutely right, the music is absolutely stellar. My personal favorite songs are: The Never Ending Adventure/Dark Chronicle Theme Underground Water Channel The Battle Spiral of Dreams/Penultimate Dungeon Level Battle for the Future Crazy Buggy Rainbow Butterfly Wood Heim Rada Mount Gundor Gundorada Workshop Death Ark Battleship Zelmite Mine The Dark Genie/Dark Cloud Theme Secret Energy (A Cut OST that you can still listen to on RUclips)
The variety of musical genre in this game is also really impressive. I remember hearing Dr. Jamming and Crazy Buggy for the first time and thinking, "who decided to put metal in this game? It rocks." Lol
"How will Max and Monica defeat the all powerful Emperor Griffin?" With the power of GUN, that's how! This video came across my feed and decided to give it a watch. Dark Cloud 2 came out when I was in my mid teens and after playing the crap out of the first Dark Cloud (Xiao is best girl, don't @ me), I *had* to play the sequel. While I think I only beat the game only ever once, I enjoyed all the time I had with it. And don't worry, Monica would be any boys crush, honestly surprised they didn't try that angle with Max. I don't think there's anything wrong with getting emotional when something reminds you of your carefree childhood days. We only get to experience them once and then its gone. I get that same feeling when I listen to the track 'UNDERTALE' from UNDERTALE. It gives me a sense of longing for something I had before but lost when I grew up, and that game is in no way nostalgic for me, nor is what I feel pointed at it. You feel what ya feel, and if they think its weird, let'em think that way. I liked this short review and the use of your character art went beyond what some efforts people are willing to put in their videos. If I may suggest, look up the Dark Cloud 2 review from a RUclipsr named Clemps! It's another viewpoint I think you'd enjoy. Also, this video earned you another sub lol!
Thanks so much! It's incredible how much these games can affect us (Undertale slaps). I'll definitely give Clemps a look, can't have too much Dark Cloud content!
Also the time travel in this game actually is REALLY well done. The only real issues come after butterfly woods, but even that could have been told BY jurak whose knowledge seems to transcend origin point destruction. And I guess balance valley MAYBE still could have had legends of sage crest having been in that area. Almost every plot hole from time travel can be explained away pretty easily.
I loved the first Dark Cloud game and was reminded of it recently by a streamer on TikTok. I'd heard the sequel was different and that seems like an understatement 😅 Here's hoping nostalgia (and maybe crowdfunding) brings us more from Level5
If you want another game that kind of has a dark cloud vibe, you could try Rogue Galaxy which was another PS2 Level-5 game. Then there's the White Knight Chronicles 1 and 2 on PS3
I've played both Dark Cloud 1 & 2, got about 80% done on both and no, unless something happened in the last 20%, the moon bunnies aren't known for magic. They're from the moon, likely a reference to Japanese folklore of moon rabbits, they're steampunk, and you could play as one with a hoverpack and machine guns if I remember correctly. The only things they really had in common was collecting parts of a village in a dungeon by storing them in the atlamillia, and building villages from scratch. I think the first game had more freedom in how you want to build the village. There was also a similar weapons system, and you had to manage your food and water supply.
I played the first Dark Cloud for MONTHS, maxing out the weapons, learning every weakness and just getting everything to the top tier. My favorite weapon was a talking slingshot named Steve who had an interesting backstory of his own that I always wanted to know more about. Then one day I rented this game. I only made it to the first forest before I had to return it to Blockbuster, and I always wanted to play it again because I wanted to see the whole story, and the building element seemed so much more awesome in part 2, where you could customize EVERYTHING, but I never got a chance, so thanks for this welcome retrospective on my one missed gaming opportunity...
I loved the first game so much. A friend of mine a long long time ago told me I could have his copy of this game, but unfortunately it was too scratched up and wouldnt run on anyone's ps2 anymore. I have the broken disc to this day and wish I could have experienced this one.
Phenomenal sorta retrospective video. 1 complaint.. not enough pistol shot kill boss joke XD. I have played this and personally like DC1 more, but probably only because i owned it and beat it as a kid, while 2 i rented as a kid and had to beat it later in life (about a year or so ago actually). I get hit by the feels from other games: Kakariko village theme hits me so hard, Resident evil 2 save theme, Tales of Eternias Celestia overworld and Imen themes.. each one takes me back. Games have been my life in many aspects. Resident Evil, similarly to you.. it hits me the most as it was significant in bonding with my brother as a kid. 1&2, he played, i watched and helped solve puzzles (which, him 5 years older then me, probably already had the answer for most lol). I heavily disagree with any insinuation that modern games are at all better then games like this. Take RE4-6 and compare them to the og titles.. you can argue what you like better about them, but it's all subjective. Tank controls and fixed cameras are a **different experience**. I, personally, prefer that experience. You can go off bad sound design to know their are things off screen, but you can't turn the camera to see what is making that noise. Brave that camera transition and hope to not get bitten. "Clunky" swing mechanics like Dark Cloud 1 make attacking a decision of timing with risk. Mistime and attack too early or don't position yourself correctly and you can be punished. To me, this makes combat more engaging, over attacks that freely chain together so missing the first doesn't matter and the only way you take damage is because the game throws 5+ enemies at you at the same time.. games of the past were simply better imo. That's if we ignore the state of games today, mostly in the AAA space, where releasing a game unfinished and then fixing it by the time your already bored of it (or just don't care anymore) is the norm. Anyhow.. don't want to rant your head off. Tossed a like on this vid, because it's a good video but cover of Time is Changing sounds nice too, and a subscribe cuz.. good work sir!
But you gotta build up to the pistol joke! Don't wanna over do it lol. I know exactly what you mean about clunky mechanics adding an element of fun to the game. I mostly didn't want to claim that it was better than modern games cause I was afraid of making people mad 😂
Dark Cloud 2 and I go way back. I was maybe close to my teens when I played it. I feel Xenogears defines me though. yes, a game can have such a profound effect on you. Xenogears made me who I am.
BRUH. I was trying to remember the name of this and for some reason had dragon in my head. My extremely frustrating memories of this were renting it with a buddy. We tried to rush to the end as we had until the end of the sleepover and as a result ended up in some no-return endgame spot extremely underpowered and basically softlocked due to not being able to do the equivalent of a darksouls broken sword hilt run. EDIT: okay apparently I was referring to Dark Sun 1, I had to check when I saw you said the game was actually good as that wasnt how I remembered it and im glad we are thinking of different games. Still grateful for you reminding me of the title, Im now going to look for a video that agrees with my predetermined opinion that the game is frustrating.
@@sketchesbyaidan it's really easy for me to forget how bad I was at video games as a kiddo, there was at least 1 Sega Genesis game rental where I couldn't intellectually grasp the game mechanics and just got hardstuck on the 1st level haha. I'm sure if I played it now it would be easy pz, but I'm bitter so that's never happening. Cheers and keep up with the great videos, I still watched even though it wasn't fully relevant to my real objective lol
Have I cried multiple times during this video? Yes. Do I share all my feelings about as you do? Yes. Did this game make me who I am today? Yes. Did I sing out loud when you did? Of freaking course.
Fun Fact if you didn't know, there was a cut Soundtrack from the game that was still included in the Official Soundtrack and can hear it on RUclips From the sounds of it, it was gonna be Fight or Boss Music. Wanna know the name of the song?
@sketchesbyaidan it's Called Secret Energy. (Idk if you can see it, but I linked it twice, but for some reason I can't see it. So, maybe Replies with Links don't show up?)
I've heard this one before! Probably from listening through playlists of the soundtrack lol. I never realized they didn't actually put it in the game! Interesting
@sketchesbyaidan I learned of this song through Dark Cloud Compendium. A RUclips Channel dedicated solely to Dark Cloud and Dark Chronicle. They even have a Discord Server filled with fans of the games.
I just couldn't get into this compared to the first game, it didn't have the same kind of atmosphere and felt a bit too 'happy' and 'anime'? About the best way I can explain it. A lot of the monster designs you showed though are from Dark Cloud 1, and some of the outfits for Monica really disturb me because like... She's 15. I won't deny the Georama system is a lot more advanced though, a Dark Cloud 1 styled game with the Georama system is 2 would be neat.
Way to childish narration with the 'jokes' and 'funny' singing.. I don't think you should try to appeal to children with this game... don't follow that dumb trend of over the top scripted 'jokes'
If this video gets 1k likes I'll upload my full cover of Time is Changing
I will NOT rest until it's done.
How is everyone NOT liking this ???
Literally I cannot live without that cover
I've been going through hard times and this MIGHT be enough to get me through
Where is cover??
I'll never forget. This game is an actual masterpiece and can be played infinite # of times and still have a different experience
yesss the replay value is insane
Dark cloud 2 is STILL in my all time favorite games to this day, up there with the classics like Sly cooper and Jak and daxtor
Man Jak and Daxter was so good. Still doesn't top DC2 imo but it was a banger
Okay, the battle music kinda hits hard
Also I totally understand the nostalgia but not nostalgia feeling! I always get it when I’m playing Legend of Zelda: Twillight princess!
And you’ve convinced me that this game is awesome!!
That means I've done my job haha. Also I'm so glad I'm not the only one! These games really do hold a special place in our hearts
It really is one-of-a-kind. Most people who played it have the same reaction!
It's SO bizarre to me that this game isn't talked about more. The whole execution is SO solid, even after all these years. The music, the art design, the voice talent, the world building, the pacing, the story, all the side mechanics. It's all just SO polished and well thought out. But yeah, I totally share that feeling of childhood bliss and wonder for this game that you do. 🥰🥰 I'm so grateful that this game exists and that I got to play it during my childhood.
This! Every aspect of the game works so well and I'll probably continue to play it forever. Also, "borked" is hilarious
This is one of the best games ever made for PS2, and I feel so happy to see other people feel the same way for dark cloud 2.
Well put, man! I obsessed over this game when I was about ten or eleven years old, it had such an impact on me--first one which made me cry.
Me too! It still makes me emotional sometimes
As a kid without any idea how the world is like outside of where I grew up, Dark Cloud 2 was the adventure story I needed. I totally understand! I grew up in a small town as well; Max is super relatable in that way haha
I have never heard of this game before but now I'm intrigued
I absolutely cannot recommend it enough!
When watching this, I felt like listening to an alternate reality me who became a youtube artist. You described my feelings for this game so perfectly that I am sure we both feel the same thing for this game. Great video, thanks for that 😊
Yay glad you like it!! This game has such an effect on people, it's nuts

Very well crafted video this made me want to play this game all over again
Thank you! Dark Cloud 2 is one of those games I'll never get tired of
Perfect video to eat my lunch to. Goated upload.
I've calculated that 22 minutes is the optimal lunchtime video length
Now I want to play it all over again…
Buy a PS4. It's worth it 😂
Still a top 5 game for me, almost 20 years after I first played it. I'm so disappointed we never got a Dark Cloud 3.
I know right! But I mean, how can they top Dark Cloud 2??
I remember playing this game as well as Dark Cloud on the PS2 shortly after it came out with one of my aunts and a couple of cousins when I was a little kid. It was one of the games I would watch them play and they let me help them in a dungeon if they need to go do something real quick.
The Xenoblade Chronicles series has recently given me a thirst for JRPGs. Thanks for throwing me a bone to look into! Also, welcome to my subscribed channels! Always glad to add a quality new channel to my feed. Great video! 😊
Thanks so much! I hear a lot of people talk about Xenoblade, I'll have to give it a try sometime
My childhood game! I played it until the disk wouldn't work anymore. I love seeing new videos on it!
I'm always so terrified of wrecking the disk. I don't know what I'll do if my copy ever breaks 😅
I was able to get a second copy years later for my Birthday and it was the most exciting day of my life to get to play it again!
I've only ever played it for a couple hours. But man it's a great game. And the soundtrack is so memorable.
Also... Arm reveal at 1:20 😮
I still listen to the soundtrack daily!
I know exactly what you mean when you spoke of that feeling in your closing remarks. It’s the closest thing to stepping into a Time Machine and reliving your childhood. Some of the best times of my life. Thanks for the vid!
Totally! It's like a little snapshot of 15 years ago
This was one of my all-time favorites as a child! Among the Zelda franchise and WoW.
My favorite game! Thank you for painting it so beautifully for newcomers. It was so relaxing.
Happy to spread the word about this fantastic game! Glad you liked it

Oh really?? I gotta get out more lol, none of my gamer friends have heard of the Dark Cloud franchise!
Your absolutely right, the music is absolutely stellar. My personal favorite songs are:
The Never Ending Adventure/Dark Chronicle Theme
Underground Water Channel
The Battle
Spiral of Dreams/Penultimate Dungeon Level
Battle for the Future
Crazy Buggy
Rainbow Butterfly Wood
Heim Rada
Mount Gundor
Gundorada Workshop
Death Ark Battleship
Zelmite Mine
The Dark Genie/Dark Cloud Theme
Secret Energy (A Cut OST that you can still listen to on RUclips)
The variety of musical genre in this game is also really impressive. I remember hearing Dr. Jamming and Crazy Buggy for the first time and thinking, "who decided to put metal in this game? It rocks." Lol

Gem of a game and gem of a channel, this video was so great I'd love to see more 👏👏
Hey thank you!! Now I gotta figure out what my next Dark Cloud 2 video should be haha

This!! Dark Cloud 2 did such a good job with their time travel system
I mean how can you not love robin and uncle max’s voices being in the game?
I loved the first Dark Cloud game and was reminded of it recently by a streamer on TikTok. I'd heard the sequel was different and that seems like an understatement 😅 Here's hoping nostalgia (and maybe crowdfunding) brings us more from Level5
It's not looking too promising but hey, maybe if there's enough of us we can brute force a Dark Cloud 3

Hey, it's never too late to try again! If you liked it before, I'm sure you'll like it now 😊
"What's that noise? Oh, its Flotsam. SHOOTING THE TRAIN WITH A MACHINE GUN." 😂😂
Dark Cloud 2 is wild in all the best ways
I loved the first game so much. A friend of mine a long long time ago told me I could have his copy of this game, but unfortunately it was too scratched up and wouldnt run on anyone's ps2 anymore. I have the broken disc to this day and wish I could have experienced this one.
That's so saddd I hope you get the chance to play it sometime!
This and paper mario ttyd are my favourite games of all time, still.
@@sketchesbyaidan It's the internet friend. If you share your opinion, your gonna make people mad ;)
@@SepticTank53 this is true
You get mad points for singing that ear-worm of a song in the montage video.
Haha yay bonus points!! It was actually super fun to record, "Time is Changing" is a banger
HAHA shade thrown. I've never heard of that game but RIP Dark Sun 1
Someone singing the praises of a Dark Cloud?? SAY IT AINT SO!!
Ikr everyone who knows about this game absolutely loves it!! How is it not more popular???
I remember playing this when i was younger too good times
Also yea I get that feeling
"evil knife-wielding clowns" is superfluous. Just 'clowns' will suffice.
I hate clowns.
lmao facts
Bought to bust out my PS2 slim again and play this game for a 4th time.
It really never gets old
@@sketchesbyaidan I just Tried playing it and unfortunately my ps2 isn't reading the disc. It reads other ones though. And the disc looks fine.
Fun Fact if you didn't know, there was a cut Soundtrack from the game that was still included in the Official Soundtrack and can hear it on RUclips
From the sounds of it, it was gonna be Fight or Boss Music. Wanna know the name of the song?
Don't leave me in suspense! What's it called??
@@sketchesbyaidan tell me what you think when your done.
@sketchesbyaidan it's Called Secret Energy.
This game was so good. Better than the 1st one.
21:24 10 years old? You mean 20 years old. 😂😂
It's still 2012 in my mind
Haha understand it if you played the first game haha ha, oh that’s a good one,
Way to childish narration with the 'jokes' and 'funny' singing..
I don't think you should try to appeal to children with this game... don't follow that dumb trend of over the top scripted 'jokes'
