    Hello Dan, greetings from Germany. I am a clinicial psychologist and have been struggling with anxiety and hyperawareness of body symptoms (mostly muscular tensions) for as long as I can remember. Your approach has been incredibly helpful and it helped me realize that the solution is not to work more on myself, do more "trauma work", dwell more on the past, but that I essentially have an mind-body auto-immune response and the only way to work with it is to (patiently) learn to self-soothe and lead a good life in the here and now.
    I'm also shocked how many professionals actually re-traumatize people and make symptoms worse. For example, in one of the clinics I worked I actually remember a colleague telling her clients in group therapy to "really feel the pain and stay with it". I was shocked even back then.
    Thanks so much for your beautiful work, it's making my life better and I will keep on this path!

    This is why I start my day with a 20 minute gentle breathwork pratice. The trouble with panic is that it's an autonomic response, and the body floods with adrenaline and cortisol. In calmer moments reassurances of safety will help to support long term and work towards a resolution. But in the immediate acute trembling legs, dizziness, breathlessness, palpitations, the idea of telling ourself anything is a challenge too far sometimes. Do a Dan - hand on heart, deep breath in, long exhale, repeat four or five times. It will help get you out of fear/flight and into rest/digest.

    Blue skies here in London but air quality is crap. Feels like I can't breathe properly, palpitations etc. Not a great day so far even though I did get outside. Lots of quiet crying. Hoping my cousin gets home from hospital today/tomorrow but am mindful the downside is that he's coming home to pass.💔. Trying to stay in the moment and reassure myself I'm safe.

    I have managed to convince my brain about any muscular pain that I have but each time nausea hits (IBS or should I say TMS?), my reason just flips out the window and I panic so hard. The 100 degrees surely don't help calm my anxiety and body but your videos do. My symptoms are always worse when my husband is at work so it's like I have some company. Thank you so much.

    • @baileyplemel7673
      @baileyplemel7673 3 месяца назад +2

      Hi Rob, Dan doesn’t talk much about dealing with your past or traumas. It isn’t automatically necessary to address those things in order to change your chronic pain symptoms. For myself, using the methods taught by Dan, Nicole Sachs, and Allen Gordon, I no longer have pelvic pain (debilitating symptoms for 2-3 years) even though I have diagnosed C-PTSD. I have other physical symptoms that come and go as I live with the PTSD, but I know what they are and I’m not afraid of them and let them roll on through. As far as struggling with your past and traumas, here are some other RUclipsrs I recommend: Tim Fletcher, Patrick Teahan, and The Crappy Childhood Fairy’s daily practice. I also highly recommend finding a therapist for personalized one-on-one trauma care, if you can.

    I struggled to find safety for the longest time until I finally hit a breaking point and embraced radical acceptance. Radically accepting that no matter what happened, I would be ok, was a big change for me. Letting go of perfectionism was involved heavily in this.

    When I look behind my fear, it' s always the feeling of being helpless that is waiting there for me. This is why I was avoiding (and sometimes still do) so much tasks: if I do this now, I could feel badly afterwards and feeling badly= feeling helpless. I live to have the control😂! Does someone struggle with this, too? Actually, I'm not freaking out in this moments, the fear is easy to ignore (I needed all this videos to realize that this is fear!) but I'm not yet able to calm me down completely. Does someone know this, too? What is your way to handle it?

    I feel like my panic trigger is such a faulty easy trigger and I cant seem to get my footing at times to turn the switch off. Simple things trigger it. I dont believe the anic but it just switches to fight flight so quickly. And then there is panic about the panic not stopping then pain ramping up and the cycle goes on. 😢

    First thank you for this amazing resource. I’m a long time listener and recommend it often to people experiencing chronic pain (I sometimes mentor through a womens health clinic and they physio group who were involved in writing Explain Pain). I do it because I made it out the other side and for any business or in a professional way.
    My comment on this is that it’s a great question. Also, we don’t have to find safety in the pain. Many small things can be felt as safe and sometimes coming at from the side rather than head on is really helpful.
    So it might be breathing but I found breathing too introspective and I realised my brain perceived it as danger. On the other hand I’ve done a daily walk for years now - I’ve done it with pain, anguish but I will often see plants and animals that I find lovely and in that I found a conduit to perceived safety. Might look like “I feel really awful now but that’s still a pretty flower”. It might be the taste of chocolate, a nice cup tea, first morning coffee, often times when looking inward was too much it's easier to find safety outward. It's good to re-enforce safety - "birds singing, i can really appreciate that".
    I believe if you build a practice like this you get better at it and the brain gets better at perceiving safety and slowly the upward spiral can begin.
    maybe your videos are
    actually this an external place of safety that repeats daily. anyway, thank you!
    .
