Lauren thanks for reply. There has been no news in UK for nearly a year. Thought he looked gaunt last seen. Perhaps for new role. Much of his work we do not get in UK. Would love to see him in theatre. Brilliant actor!
I loved the character, Matthew, and they could have done so much. I think he left when he did so that he could ride his popularity from Downton Abbey to get these other parts. I don’t see much previous work talked about so assume he wasn’t very popular before DA. He did take some odd parts but nothing really big, except maybe Beauty and the Beast. But I still run into people who didn’t know about that movie either.
I think normally when actors leave a really hot show and character they aren’t as popular and don’t normally have more success. The example I think of is McDreamy from Grey’s Anatomy.
No one could of "really taken a hold of his role".. he was the original & audiences fall in love with the image of that special person owning the character.. my take on it.
Watch ‘The Line of Beauty’ - his first mini series back in 2006. He’s incredible in it. He definitely has a gift. I’m sure he regrets leaving Downton considering how huge it became, but I don’t blame him for not admitting it. Although I would admit it. I notice he usually mentions the other projects plus he also followed the advice from colleagues and friends at the time. I’m sure Jessica Brown Findlay regrets her exit from the series.
I loved him in The Line of Beauty, and I missed him in Downton Abbey. But I don't think he made a mistake, nor do I think he's been regretting leaving. He's been very active since his Downton days.
I wonder how they would have extended the story. Matthew died having created an heir to Downton. He had worked on improving the estate so it didn't go the way others had - and gone bankrupt. What else could he have done? When Mary remarried, there wasn't much of a life for the second husband and he had to create a car business with Tom. Matthew would have been all but standing around making decisions with Robert until Robert's death.
@monique8641 Maybe they would have delayed the birth of an heir that might cause problem in their relationship….. or maybe either of them might need to travel and the separation might cause another kind of problem when one of them will be seduced to having an affair….. or maybe Downton will fall into some sort of disaster that would challenge their marriage …… Whatever it might be, Lord Fellows I‘m sure would have created an enduring & interesting plot for these two favorite characters of mine….🥰
To be honest with you he should have stayed it would have been a better for him financially and better for his career and it would have developed him personally
Dan Stevens was superb in the American thriller The Guest. Not as well known as Downton Abbey, of course, but he's an excellent actor and did a great job. The danger of a long running serial is being typecast, which makes getting work later way more difficult. His contract was ending, he made his choice. End of story. Won't be subscribing to a channel that uses click-bait, and doesn't do the research into how to pronounce names.
Why would someone take a major role in a tv series and not really be committed to the show. I think it’s selfish to the audience and other actors who would of been committed.
He was committed. He did his three years as promised. they decided to extend the show due to its popularity and that wasn’t what he wanted for his career. He had a right to move on.

Downton Abbey is definitely bigger than that version of Beauty and the Beast, and his chemistry with Michelle Dockery was beautiful; the chemistry with Emma Watson was nothing like it.
Apparently they were all originally signed up for three seasons to see how DA worked out. In the meantime, other offers came up and he was afraid of being typecast. Same for the actress who played Sybil. The writers stated that if they'd had time to think about it, they may have killed them both off in a car accident.
Best thing Dan ever did was leave this show. Just watch The Guest and see how versatile the man is, from Mathew Crawley to David Collins. As nice as he was in Abbey he’s absolutely terrifying in The Guest.
I was shocked and sad when Matthew Crowley died but the character was too white bread and one dimensional for a talent like Dan Steven’s. I HATED when left… but more because of his BRO-MANCE with Tom Branson than his ROMANCE with Mary. Since then I’ve seen him in some diverse roles where he was fantastic I’m glad he took the risk.
I actually thought him branching out into comedy in Fire saga and action films showed his greater range than a quiet posh boy in Downtown. His character dying suddenly was very much in keeping with the plot twists of the show and reflects real life.
When the writers made him walk after he was supposedly paralysed the nonsense was too much for me. I also left Downton after that.Too soap opera for me.
I'm so mad Steven left the show, it's not the same anymore after he's gone. The most disappointment was they dont even give Matthew "proper death scene" he's gone just like that, he was pretty big character even bigger than Lavinia and Sybil but everybody else got proper longer death scene.
Dan Stevens was excellent in the German film: Ich bin dein Mensch. All in German. Not dubbed. It came out in fall 2022. His German is excellent! He plays a robot, and he is marvelous. Try it!
I think Stevens left because his contract was up, the show wasn't offering him the schedule he needed to try his hand at films, and they didn't offer enough money to keep him tied down.
maybe I'm living under a rock, but ai've never seen stevens outside of downton abbey. is the presenter herr exaggerating stevens' ongoing success after da?
He signed a contract for 3 seasons, fulfilled his obligation, and didn't want to stay, for whatever reason. It's HIS life! Why some "fans" think he was obligated to stay solely because they liked his character is ridiculous. Since leaving he has done everything from big budget Hollywood productions to low budget independent films, cult favorite television series to a high grossing horror movie. Anyone smirking to themselves that his career has fizzled out since leaving Downton is delusional.
I fell in love with (Mathew) on this film and really really enjoyed watching the show but when his character died, I felt like drinking cold bitter coffee watching the next continued episode.
I agree he made the decision to leave I'm a dan Stevens fan I don't listen to negative comments about him I listen to positive comments about him I had a crush on Matthew Crawley
Before I put this on the "do not recommend" list because of the bad clickbait, I just want to mention that just saying "girls couldn't inherit because sexism" is far too much of an oversimplification. There was sexism going on, but it was a specific case, not a general one. The reason why there's so much drama around the heir to Lord Grantham is because his father had Cora sign an agreement which entailed her fortune to the title of Earl of Grantham, along with the house. That means whoever gets the title gets the entire inheritance. This was a dynastic legal measure to ensure these grand estates A) stayed in the family and B) preserved the fortunes and power of the local lords, ensuring that power didn't dilute over generations. Had Cora not signed that agreement, her daughters would've inherited the fortune, though not the estate. Undoing the entailment would've been possible, but not in a single generation. So there was nothing that could really be done.
You didn't mention another film he did after quitting DA - Charles' Dickens, the one who wrote A Christmas Carol, I think it was one of his best because that character didn't require him to look handsome, and he did a great job. I also enjoy his character in the TV series Sense & Sensibility. I think he is a versatile actor, and I respect his personal choice. But I think this channel should stop using click bait headline like that. You fooled me.
Just as the actress who played Lady Rosamund opined that she lost many roles because of the contract she had with the show runners. She had to be available when they needed the shots. Most inconvenient.
Sybil's death was horrifying and completely made sense in the setting of the show, and I really invested in Tom's storyline. With Matthew, somehow it was so different. I guess I'm 1 of the few who understood Mary and loved her icy heart and how it melted for Matthew. I think I hated the result of his death and the disservice they did to Mary - just when she was running the estate and coming out from under her grief she is blatantly told by the characters and the writer "you must marry this pretentious annoying man" so she married off to a man she never really loved for the sake of getting married. She had more chemistry and attraction to the journalist who mucked with the pigs than a whole season and 2 movies with the guy she married. See, I can't even remember his name. Is it Tony?
For all who say that Dan Stephens made a mistake by leaving, who else from the cast has had a widely successful career outside from the series/films? Maybe Hugh Bonneville? I’ve seen him in one film I believe. But no one has fared much better than Dan has I think. He did what was right for him and when I think of him I know exactly who he is as an actor, and I don’t necessarily think about Downtown Abbey first.
Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern (as two examples) have plenty of acting roles under their belts. Guessing you'd never heard of Dame Maggie Smith or Dame Penelope Wilton before? I can't speak for all of the characters, but I did see plenty of them in earlier years in Midsomer Murders.
@@monique8641 Dame Maggie Smith is probably one of my favorite British actresses and I have been watching her in films since the 90’s (The Secret Garden/Sister Act) However, her career was established before Downtown Abbey, in fact she carried the film in my opinion. I’m in Jamaica, which matters because while I’d never heard of Elizabeth McGovern or Hugh Bonneville before DA, I do know who they are now but for me they’re totally associated to the film - ie not famous enough to have the same international impact at Smith. Now, I was replying to comments that Dan Stephen’s’ career hasn’t blown up since he left the film (suggesting that he should have stayed) and I’m saying that I haven’t seen where the other actors have fared any better. If someone blinked and never watched Downton Abbey, they probably would never have heard of any of the other actors, Smith excepted, while Stephens has since been in a few films where he might be remembered on this side of the world. 🤷🏽♀️ Update: Never heard of Dame Penelope Wilton before Downton Abbey, in-fact I had to google her to know who you were referring to!
Dan Stevens of course is a fine actor with looks and personality to boot. I hated to see him leave Downton Abby......But the show was and is still great. I would still loved to have seen him remain on the show....❤
The worst character in the DA was merry, when she gave birth to her son, and air , and having her love beside her, still mentioned her sister and show how much she hates her. She’s even worse than, Nanny West, or Thomas.
Never believe an actor's explanation for why he abruptly leaves a successful role in a TV series, especially when the explanation is something as amorphous as wanting to explore other creative avenues. Excuse me? Most likely it was a tug-of-war over salary and the show called his bluff. I hated that he left the show

He seems to be playing roles he enjoys. It's not always about chasing Hollywood stardom but finding projects that are interesting and challenging. And it's not always possible to pursue other roles while doing a series.
Outside of Beauty and the Beast, in which his face wasn't even shown for like 95% of the movie, I haven't heard or seen anything else involving Dan.
He's been very active since Downton Abbey. He may just not have been in anything that has piqued your interest.
@robinviden9148 beauty and the beast never piqued my interest either and that was the only thing I heard of him
@@CoolsBreeze Well, he's known for playing the lead in the 2014 American thriller film The Guest. He also played the lead in the superhero tv series Legion, and he starred in the Netflix thriller film Apostle. He co-starred alongside Harrison Ford in The Call of the Wild and with Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams in the comedy Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. He played the robot Tom in Ich bin dein Mensch. This year, he's been in the films Cuckoo, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and Abigail.
Where did he say he couldn’t work with her and who was her? I must’ve missed it 😩
He NEVER said that. Dan loved being a part of Downton Abbey and remains friends with many of his co-stars. He just needed to follow his heart and from the very beginning when all principal actors (19) signed three-year contracts, he knew he never wanted to commit more than three years to any one project for fear of typecasting, plus his deep yearning to stretch his acting talents.
@@laurenstich1049 I shouldve figured it was clickbait. I was sad to see him leave Downton but I loved watching all his work since especially on Legion. Apostle was also an underrated film imo.
Hi Lauren.
Haven't seen anything about Dan for months. Have you?
@@chrisbritcher2133 Hi Chris. Gaslit was superb (Starz miniseries), as was his brief but spectacular performance in the Hulu miniseries -- Guillermo del Toro's "Cabinet of Curiosities" episode called "Alo Glo". Dan's next project is starring on Kong vs Godzilla because he always wanted to work again with Adam Wingard who directed Dan in 2014's The Guest -- his after starring role after he left Downton Abbey. Can't imagine seeing him in something like this, but the original movie of this name a few years ago broke all box-office records. Some top names like Helen Mirren have gone this route, as well. (And remember Maggie Smith in the Harry Potter films...)
If you google Dan Stevens, he had plenty of work before DA and plenty of work afterwards.
@@monique8641
There is work, and then there is work.
No one could of "really taken a hold of his role".. he was the original & audiences fall in love with the image of that special person owning the character.. my take on it.
The show still stayed amazing till the end and the movies. But Dan Stevens really almost fked up one of the BEST shows to ever be made. I mean wow. 😢
I must say, I am quite disappointed in his lordship's decision to leave Downton Abbey.
Matthew did not have a title.
I wish Matthew & Mary were together forever!
They can be.. just don’t watch the episode that he dies in.. and any episode or movie after that.😊
@@shivadizayin 😉👍
I wonder how they would have extended the story. Matthew died having created an heir to Downton. He had worked on improving the estate so it didn't go the way others had - and gone bankrupt. What else could he have done? When Mary remarried, there wasn't much of a life for the second husband and he had to create a car business with Tom. Matthew would have been all but standing around making decisions with Robert until Robert's death.
@monique8641
Maybe they would have delayed the birth of an heir that might cause problem in their relationship….. or maybe either of them might need to travel and the separation might cause another kind of problem when one of them will be seduced to having an affair….. or maybe Downton will fall into some sort of disaster that would challenge their marriage …… Whatever it might be, Lord Fellows I‘m sure would have created an enduring & interesting plot for these two favorite characters of mine….🥰
I used not to forgive Yoko Ono. Now I added Dan Steven to my list of Unforgiven Ones 🤠
Welcome to the club!
To be honest with you he should have stayed it would have been a better for him financially and better for his career and it would have developed him personally
Cheap clickbait title. He just wanted to pursue different parts.
It was written a bit strangely that when anyone had a baby, their partner would die. 🤣 I thought they could've mixed it up a bit with Matthew's death.
It was not as if he was playing Fonzie.
@@janniegurl05 Naturally you have to finish a contract. He moved on because he wanted to explore different roles. Again, why take on a major role if you weren’t committed to seeing the show through.
@@jerrilynnfagan5505 The same reason people who might work for a company switch jobs. It’s what suits their needs. It’s not about us, it’s about him and his livelihood. The folks who created the show decided to extend past 3 years. He wasn’t obligated to do more.
@@jerrilynnfagan5505 because the original contracts were for three seasons. He completed that contract and was offered other work when the three years were almost up. There was no guarantee at that stage that the show would continue.
@@janniegurl05
In Japan, people graduate from University, go to job fairs and interviews, are hired and stay in that company until they retire at 60. It is called stability and security. Most actors are out of work more than they work. The rest should be grateful.
So where in all this does it "EXPLAIN" why he wanted to leave, as it says in the description?
Downton Abbey is definitely bigger than that version of Beauty and the Beast, and his chemistry with Michelle Dockery was beautiful; the chemistry with Emma Watson was nothing like it.
Oh, did not know he was the Beast. But…..he could have written his own ticket if he had stayed on Downton Abbey.
There's no development with the couple happy forever (remember Tolstoy "all the happy families are alike"). Life is one thing, a show is another.
Why does the title say “I can’t work with her “? That is not with the video says at all. Very Clickbait.
But I have never seen him in anything as successful as DA. The show went on very well without him.
I would love to read the screenplays of those 5 episodes Matthew was featured in that never got produced.
Why is the fact that Matthew and Mary fifth cousins so creepy? Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt were fifth cousins.
Teddy Roosevelt supposedly told them they were clever to keep the name in the family.
Try it!
Apparently he wanted to leave to play beasts, mutants and robots. How....."diverse"😏.
He also trimmed by at least 15 pounds, stopped bleaching his hair, and showed that he could talk as Americans do. Not bad. @@tessdurberville711
I wish that they had a contract where they had to stay for a certain amount of time. It was so sad and he was such a great character.
I think Stevens left because his contract was up, the show wasn't offering him the schedule he needed to try his hand at films, and they didn't offer enough money to keep him tied down.
Mary didn’t deserve him, she was selfish, interested, spoiled, arrogant, she is the worst, I so wanted Mathew to stay with someone else.
Lavinia! 😢
She LOVED him.
Hmm I saw her a different way. To me she was elegant, kind, fair, and confident
What are these weird roles he took on. He should have stuck to time period dramas.
Have you tried google?
A pity that commentary on a British series is voiced by an American. It tends to jar somewhat.
Plus they never get the pronunciation of the names right!
Wow..
The thumbnail had nothing to do with the content. Blatant click bait
maybe I'm living under a rock, but ai've never seen stevens outside of downton abbey. is the presenter herr exaggerating stevens' ongoing success after da?
Why does your thumbnail SAY & SUGGEST that ‘he couldn’t work with her’….
CLICK BAIT LIER.
Dan is a great actor, but he has to admit that if one actor is “ typecasted” , there must be a reason. Look at Hugh Grant!
He left thinking he would cut a massive swathe in Hollywood. Sadly for him....didn't happen.
David Duchovny suffered from that same delusion when he left The X-Files. Luckily for him, they can resurrect you in SciFi.
Interesting why he needs to keep talking about the very job that made him mildly famous. No one cares about your character anymore. Let it go, man!
I hope Dan Stevens is the next James Bond!
I highly doubt it
I'd like to see Tom Hiddleston do it.
I'd like to see Sam Heughan.
Henry Cavill is born to play James Bond
I love how they marry their cousins and absolutely no one thinks “this is kinda weird, why do we do this?!” 😂
He signed a contract for 3 seasons, fulfilled his obligation, and didn't want to stay, for whatever reason.
I was angry when he died off, but he is absolutely awesome no matter what he does! ❤👏 he made the right call
Exactly! He made it through the war and all that, only to take his terminal breath in a ditch by the roadside...:(
What’s he done better since?
He’s no longer a household name
I agree he made the decision to leave I'm a dan Stevens fan I don't listen to negative comments about him I listen to positive comments about him I had a crush on Matthew Crawley
He got the big head... and then... we never heard from Dan again.
Perhaps you should google him and see what he's done since.
Too bad the title Waaaaaagh! has been used. She could have used it for her autobiography.
This dude has gotten so much better looking with age.
Misleading thumbnail! 👎
Is it Tony?
Dan Stevens left uk as he thought he was better than anyone else in Downton may he have problems in the USA
Where is he now?
Why don't you google and see what he's done since Downton instead of making inane remarks.
@@monique8641Just wondering, are you Dan’s mom?

Every actor has a filmography on IMDb. His is not impressive. Quantity, not quality.
it's StevenS as in Dan Stevens, not Steven..
He should have stayed.
@@monique8641Oh, I see where my original comment doesn’t specify that I was referring to the cast’s post Downton Abbey careers so I take your point.
Michele Dockery has had a great career. She’s had several mini series and has been in numerous TV and mainstream movies.
Ummmm…. How about Lily James, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Penelope Wilton, Maggie Smith …
Dan Stevens of course is a fine actor with looks and personality to boot. I hated to see him leave Downton Abby......But the show was and is still great. I would still loved to have seen him remain on the show....❤
He really should have given a longer notice. That car crash death was just ridiculous. Although it does happen in real life 🤷🏻♀️
If “feminist badass” mean insufferable. Mary became even more insufferable.
In 2012, he moved to New York and appeared in a Broadway show
Lame clickbait at preview, this kind of thing makes me gladly click on dislike!

The Guest was my first film watching Dan Stevens
Biggest mistake / risk in his career.
Google him and see how he's fared since he left.
I hated that he left the show
He was the best character, he was greatly missed when he died
"Feminist badasses" "Sexist" ...gotta love buzz words.
So disgusted by the clickbait title I'm blocking this channel. I don't know what else is on here, but there's no way I want to support or have anything to do with this person.
“Cougar friendly”?! You know dating women your own age does not make them “cougars” right? Dan Steven’s is not 20. He’s 40. Grownups can date each other without being called names.
Never saw this show, but loved him in Legion
The biggest I would say was playing David in Legion 🔥
Never forgave Dan Stevens for leaving halfway through the series. He single handedly ruin the remaining seasons. Will never watch anything with him in it again.
Why do you need to use click bait to talk about how "he couldn't work with her"? Do better 🙄
