Punk is just disillusioned with the whole experience of working in AEW. He thought these guys were serious, and that he'd be looked up to and respected as a veteran. He was an optimist.

"I'm old, I'm hurt, I'm tired." Meanwhile AJ Styles, Billy Gunn, Bobby Lashley, Edge, R-Truth, Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio and Sheamus are all either his age or older, yet look better and are still operating at a full time schedule.

Man this discussion about this incident is exactly what I needed. I was starting to think that all the wrestling fans in the world had lost, as Jim would say, their rabbid-ass minds. All I've been hearing from fans or reading on Twitter and on message boards and in forums and on Reddit and in RUclips comments is how it's all Punk's fault and how the Elite are innocent. Now you can piss on my head but don't tell me it's raining while you do it.
Every major incident of backstage drama that AEW has had has involved the Elite in one way or another. They have refused to put people over, they have conspired to get other people to lose their positions and ultimately nixed from the company, and they whine and cry to the so-called "wrestling journalists" so that their fanboys can look at them as heroes. I'll never say that CM Punk is an angel but what I will tell you is that he is by far the biggest star THAT company has and has ever had and in the illustrious history of professional wrestling a promoter that is worth anything is going to always side with their biggest star that makes them the most money and gets them the most eyes on their product. This past year from September 2021 to September 2022 has been AEW's most successful and profitable year to date and it is all because of CM Punk.
The problem though Is that Tony Khan is not a promoter that is worth anything. If he were he would have handled this as soon as Page walked back through the curtains from that promo where he went into business for himself or he would have handled it when he first heard the rumors going around that Punki got Colt Cabanna fired or he would have handled it when Punk came back and did his shoot promo or he would have stopped Punk at the media scrum. So this failure is just as much on him as it is the principles involved. Make no mistake though, I'm blaming the Elite. They are executives in the company and their power and management comes with a larger set of responsibility and accountability. Now the AEW fanboys will tell everyone that Punk disrespected Tony Khan by saying what he said at the media scrum. I guess there's a kernel of truth in that. But what about the disrespect that Hangman Page showed TK when he went into business for himself before the pay-per-view against Punk? What about the disrespect that the Elite showed him when they tried to confront Punk without speaking to Tony first? What about the disrespect they've showed him with all of the issues they've caused backstage?
Punk was and has been hailed as a hero by both the fans AND the locker room in AEW. That is UNTIL he started his program with Page. Go figure. Once is happen stance, twice is coincidence, but beyond that it's a damn pattern. This as been going on regarding the Elite since even before AEW was a thing. How are current fans this jaded and able to be so worked?
Smart fans used to be, ya know, SMART!!!

It felt cathartic to read your thoughts on this matter. Really well put and you maintained the chronological order of the events too.
It has been a pattern with the Elite (mostly the Bucks) dating back to when they were released by TNA, giving about a week’s notice to ROH to book them in their upcoming shows and then having the temerity to complain about being jobbed out by well-built talent to these so called “dirt sheets” who *love* printing any comment that is controversial. The marks read these articles and offer their fake sympathies to these jobbers. The jobbers think they’re over and well, the rest is history as they say.
If the Bucks are talented in one thing then it’s their Twitter game. They know how to rile up the marks.

Thank you very much. I sometimes would look at comment sections and felt like I was the only sane one in the room. As far as I'm concerned 'The Elite' stormed into Punk's locker room looking for a fight. With a guy who wouldn't even back down from Vince fucking McMahon. Punk has stood up to anyone whom he feels (wether you think it's valid or not) had slighted him, especially in front of others.
I may be an asshole for thinking it or maybe someone can say I'm a bitchboy for Punk but when I heard that Punk was the first one to throw the punch, my first thought was... "Well, what did they say to cause that response?" Out of all the years Punk has been in the business and has had issues with guys backstage, has he ever thrown the first punch? Has it even gotten to that point before? Correct me if it has.

Right away I noticed that the shows felt disjointed, the tone wasn’t consistent, the stories made no sense, and the in ring action didn’t tell much of a story. At first, I thought it was just growing pains of a new company, because there definitely were some good matches and stories, they were just few and far between. They started getting fewer and farther in between, and that’s when it dawned on me, this is intentional. They want the show to feel like the indies. They don’t care about having a consistent tone, stories that make sense, wrestlers following rules in the ring, they don’t care if someone does the same five fake looking moves all night. It’s meant to be there. It’s baked in. Fuck that company. I’m okay that it’s on fire. It should be.

Thanks for all this. Anytime I see reports from other places, they all blame Punk since he's the grown-up and they call him immature or whiny and say how "it's a bad look" for him. When, literally, the only reason he said anything was because they started spreading shit about him in the first place.
Unfortunately, that's the way of the world now. Instead of blaming the people who caused the problems, they blame the person who brought it to everyone's attention and let the truth be known. Then, if you don't "let it go" and actually try to fight back, they make you out to be the bad guy just for defending yourself. It's complete fucking bullshit.
Punk wouldn't have complained during the media scrum if they didn't give him shit to complain about. They just kept poking the bear and then, when the bear reacted angrily, they're all like, "well, that bear always causes problems". That's how these pricks function. They do shit behind the scenes so no one can prove they did anything, then if they get outed, they portray themselves as the victims because all people see is the reaction to their machinations, not the months/years of build-up leading up to it.
I don't know how any of those supposed journalists can sleep at night. I wish I could be delusional enough to still think I'm a good person after doing the shit they do. My life would be so much easier if I didn't have a conscience either.

I don't know. No one does except the people involved. Maybe they purposely avoided him for months because Punk hadn't done anything yet so everyone would've been on Punk's side back in May. So The Elite tried to stay away from him until Punk was angrier and more willing to retaliate. I wouldn't be eager for a sit down with any of those guys if I was in Punk's situation.
Remember Punk said he gave Hangman a chance to apologize and it wasn't handled. That apology could've been the extent of it. But if they're not willing to listen to advice, why would they be willing to listen to his critique or any other reason? What's the point in talking and arguing with people who won't listen?
Remember, Hangman did the promo. Then he dropped the belt to Punk. Then Punk was away with an injury. So he wasn't traveling with them everywhere. Punk was busy getting surgery on his foot. He can't be chasing them down backstage to settle beefs. That's why it was still on his mind months later. Because he never got the chance to air it out when it happened.
Also, Punk's beef wasn't just with The Elite. It was also with the journalists who reported the story that he got Colt Cabana fired without getting Punk's side of the story when they reported it. Since they called him out publicly, through Hangman's promo and the news reports, he wanted to do the same. Fight fire with fire.
Again, we don't know what happened behind the scenes since Punk has been there. All we supposedly know are the stories being reported that are fed to Meltzer and his ilk by The Elite. They thought they could oust Punk like they did Cody. And that, like Cody, Punk wouldn't say anything about it.
But Punk doesn't give a shit like Cody does. He was happily retired being married to A.J. Lee. They both made enough money to never have to wrestle again. He came back because people wanted it and he saw an opportunity to help the new generation. He wanted to right some wrongs so that his legacy in wrestling isn't just a guy that was difficult to work with and left when he didn't get what he wanted. He wanted to give people the chances he never got.
Now, you might not believe that because of your preconceived notions about how CM Punk is as a person. But I'd much rather believe FTR, who was apprehensive about Punk coming to AEW, when they say that he tried to dispense advice and help the young guys in the locker room.

Like the journalist that sent in the letter, the "journalist" that only got one side of this and ran with it without checking should be barred and credibility should be lost (there needs to be a bigger discussion about that too). And Tony Kahn has to hire someone who would put his foot down but that would mean Tony would have to admit he fucked up. And idk if Tony is going to do that.
Also Brian is getting heated because it frustrates him because of being a executive for a company and seeing all this bullshit going down as well.

The wrestling media is terrible. Too many are fans desperate for attention, and it feels like AEW has had a really soft ride, like when do you read a review of a WWE match and see someone write "It wasn't to my tastes, but it works for the fanbase so A-"

  • @keithyw
    @keithyw 2 года назад +12

I think this situation marks a pivotal point where AEW/Tony Khan needs to realize that in order to sustain or grow, they must change philosophies on their direction. Before, I think Tony believed he could get a bunch of matches he wanted to see and do all the stuff he liked from the mid 90s. What he missed on was that there are lots of egos in that equation. People who would join would want to see themselves on top, etc. Those that he put on top wanted to stay on top. He probably got a lot of bad advice on what the WWE at the time was missing that would attract more talent towards them (i.e. creative freedom). So now, he had this huge mixing bowl with tons of explosive content that inevitably would self-destruct.
The biggest thing Tony can do at this moment is to remove himself as the booker and being involved at all these operational level activities and focus on the money and high level strategy. He needs to start treating himself as a VC rather than "one of the boys." Next, he should take his veteran talent and/or hire people capable of running the show. JC mentioned Jim Ross but I don't know if Jim Ross would want to deal with it at this stage of his life. I think he would be good to pair up with someone else and act as a consultant and mentor someone in that spot. Also, they need a solid booker. Too bad Heyman isn't available because I think he's one of the few that could salvage this mess. But he would be smart enough to demand a huge amount of money to go over. And if Tony was smart, he'd pay Heyman.
Now, I've heard that people from the inside were saying things like, "I'm surprised Punk wasn't fired for what he did." Well, I think his situation is more complicated. He's probably got a pretty nice contract because he's a top star and has a good lawyer to boot in case someone tried to screw him over. Also, because of the amount of money he demands and the business he generates (which Tony has admitted), Punk isn't someone they can just readily fire. It would be a huge blow against AEW since Punk's loyal fans would disappear. In addition, it just shows that people inside that company either are part of the Bucks/Omega click possibly trying to get Punk fired and/or don't understand business and don't care.
The Bucks/Omega though are becoming a liability. The style that they are promoting not only is causing AEW to lose revenue (because it's not drawing the way they think they want) but it's causing injuries left and right. Tony Khan is basically paying people to sit at home and recover while trying to fill in those spots. But I'm starting to believe that they're responsible for key talent being held back. FTR is an obvious one, but what about people like Ruby Soho who came in with tons of fanfare? Why is she so low on the totem pole at this point? Or why is Malakai Black, despite all his bad ideas, now asking for his contract release besides mental/physical health issues, citing in addition being unhappy with his character push/development? If he was given creative freedom, which would make someone like that happy, why is he unhappy? Or how come Brian Pillman Jr have nothing despite all the potential to be a huge babyface after that Dark Side documentary was released?
Something else that I question is why that lawyer/#2 in the company was brought to the locker room when all this erupted? Why didn't someone go in and grab Tony Khan while the scrum was occurring so that he could do something? #2 or not, the Bucks/Omega sounded like they were trying to plant ideas into that lawyer or perhaps set Punk up. I mean, you bring a lawyer into a locker room like that and you're effectively asking for a fight because it feels threatening.
This whole thing just feels insane. Tony really should just get rid of Colt Cabana if his presence is causing this much issue and suspend Adam Page or fine him since he's been causing a lot of problems on the side. Also, he should really stop doing these media scrums. The reporters aren't real reporters imo. They're marks trying to push their own agenda and get close to the boys. Tony needs to close the door on the locker room and fine people who are leaking to the public for a while. No more outside interviews. You have to be a professional and be trusted to deliver them. And I think these days, since kayfabe is in a weird spot, some people just don't know how they should respond while the reporters don't know how to ask the right questions without hurting the business.
Can't help but feel HHH is just smirking at home going, "See? I was right."

TGBL going off at 24:08 is epic, especially given his background in the music industry. He knows how legitimate business executives work and has been around them enough to know first-hand. That said, you don't need to have a business mind to realize that giving executive jobs to people who have no experience and no qualifications in the field is stupid.

This is an interesting change with McMahon stepping down. The biggest selling point for AEW was being able to be an indie wrestler on a big stage and not having to bend to McMahon's style. Now, with Triple H in charge, everything can be different. Anyone who watched NXT during its heyday knows that Trips loves athletic indie wrestlers, and it wouldn't surprise me to see him start to push those types more and more on the main roster.
