I actively choose not to use Tik Tok because 1) "running out" of RUclips videos to watch is my cue to do something else like read a book or clean my room and 2) I have the impression that Tik Tok's model greatly deemphasizes context, which is vital to really understanding new information. How many "new" trends are just repeats from 2010s RUclips? How many "hacks" make no actual sense in real life? Lack of context is a general evil of online spaces, but Tik Tok is particularly egregious.
Wonderful explanation - exactly what I would have said if I had been able to articulate it!! :)
So well said. I’m just not interested and won’t be participating in it other than my friend sending me something they think funny.
So articulate, and exactly right
I personally can’t stand TikTok ecspecially for beauty content. A 2 minute video with someone who already looks flawless because of filters putting a product on, is pretty much always going to look good. I like seeing someone with redness, acne, etc put something on and then if it works it makes me feel like wow hey maybe that will work for me too. Ps love your videos
I feel the same way, I don't even have TikTok.
The constant use of filters on makeup reviews on Tiktok is so damaging. Even being a creator myself, I find myself feeling bad about how my skin looks when I film a Tiktok without the beauty mode filter on. Filters obviously make everything look smoother & more airbrushed, so naturally it’s more appealing to click on, which creates an unfair advantage to creators who use these filters. It also makes their makeup reviews almost pointless in my opinion, because we all know a filter can make a bad makeup day look good. As a RUclipsr whose just starting out on Tiktok, it feels daunting, like I’ll never be able to compete with filtered content that looks more polished & perfect, which is just not reality.
Edited to add*- Same thing goes for undisclosed sponsorships. Creators who don’t disclose deceive their audience & get more engagement because consumers don’t know it’s actually a paid ad & sponsorships generally get less engagement. These creators know this, so they decide to not disclose so their videos receive more traction, hence more followers, views, likes, & ultimately more paid sponsorships in the end. It’s disappointing to say the least. Just my two cents.
YEP!! As a new creator myself I feel like NOBODY even bothers with me because of my skin!! I don’t have the “look”. I do recognize my videos are old school youtube and I use my iphone to film but I show people good tips and what the makeup REALLY looks like. My goal was honestly not to start a career on youtube but do it for a hobby and form a small group of people who want to talk about makeup and share tips and tricks. With that being said that’s why I didn’t want to spend alot of money on equipment to film. I do recognize I neeyto step it up though even for a hobby because my latest video go botched 😅 I tried to fix it and reload it but the fixed video wouldn’t load. My fear is putting all this time and money into it and still not getting even the small amount of engagement I want because everyone is watching filtered tik tok videos… uggg just frustrating!
They do it here, too. It makes me sick to watch these people anymore. Any filter on someone using makeup is literally a fake af person to me. How can you showcase something with a filter on it. Then, they expect people to wonder why they feel so bad about themselves.
@@nickilubra3981 what is your tiktok username? I’ve been on tiktok for probably a year and I still can’t figure out how to find specific people without a username
@@nickilubra3981 what is your RUclips channel called? I would love to see your content! It sounds just like what I’m looking for. I was considering starting a channel as a hobby, without spending a lot on equipment. But I’m just not sure anyone would actually watch lol
Or because it’s not perfect, people will be mean.
I use tiktok quite a bit but try to avoid beauty content - its usually undisclosed sponsorships and really over the top 2016 youtube style OMG THIS IS LITCHERALLY THE BEST and filtered to heck and back.
100% correct.
Even the gardening content is becoming over-the-top. It’s like the news media sensationalism leaked into all sectors of platforms.
same!
I don't watch TicTok so this was SUPER interesting information. As far as the RUclips Beauty Community...I believe it is alive and well. One area that is actually growing is more older ladies are discovering the Mature Beauty Community and for the most part I believe they prefer long form youtube.
I started watching youtube beauty during covid lockdown...I started watching tiktok only 5 months ago. hate to be bad news but I rarely go to youtube anymore. LOVE tiktok
I wish I could like your comment ten times...for everything you said!
Agree 100%! I tried watching Tic Tok but didn’t like it.
Yes, it’s true , I’m in my fifties, just got into watching you tube. I have several women I follow on you tube who discuss beauty, makeup and skin care. I can’t get into tik tok.
This was really interesting. I don't watch Tik Tok, I hate FB, and can barely stand Instagram and it's obnoxious AI so I'd be super bummed if RUclips, the only social media I really enjoy went away. I love watching/ listening to it while I'm doing other things.
Definitely agree I’ve gotten rid of all my apps except RUclips.
All of the above…me, too!
Same, RUclips only
I thought I was the only one. I only use RUclips and I'd be devastated if it actually dies down.
I haven’t ever used TikTok, but yes it was designed to be addicting. I enjoy thoughtful content, which is nonexistent over there. Its a platform that has no protections and made for hooking children. Very frightening. Anyway, I appreciate your content.
it's become more and more difficult to find beauty content that is genuine. I used to love following some bigger influencers because they would focus on different styles of makeup application and as someone getting into makeup I loved that, now it seems that a lot of the focus is on pushing the same products (how many videos on the abh nouveau palette do we need?) and it's about the new makeup instead of actually using what you have.
Noooo, not a chance. Proof if needed, the minute I received the notification of this upload I happened to be scrolling tik tok, I instantly closed the app and watched yourself. In my opinion the beauty content on tik tok is to be taken with a pinch of salt. I mean really...how can anyone trust a 3 minute review of a foundation used by a tik tok "creator" who has used every beauty enhancing feature available to them , and do not disclose their sponsorship from a brand🙅♀️. I trust my you tube beauty content creators because they do an in depth review of a product, I trust my YT creators, they've proved themselves to me and gained my trust...I'm educated by YT creators every day and I'm fiercely loyal to you all...much love from Ireland ❤
I have TikTok and never ever use it. I’m too busy to sit down and scroll and I like long videos, not 2 minutes clips. I carry my iPad around and watch RUclips as I’m doing things.
Ditto!!! TY!!
Too busy to watch 2 min videos, but not too busy to watch long RUclips videos, why does that make sense?
Same, I watch videos (listen) while I am doing other things, 15-20 minutes videos are better for me.
Agreed completely! I never even downloaded TikTok because I don’t have time to scroll on my phone like that. I use RUclips and music as background to doing things around my apartment.
Same. I don't need short commercials. I'd rather at least learn something about the products, application, etc.
The thing that fascinates me about TikTok is how virality has changed over time. Remember 10 years ago when "going viral" actually meant something? Now if you're a person who uploads regularly to TikTok it's not so much a challenge but an expectation that a video will go viral. It's completely lost its meaning which means when someone says "this video/product went viral!" it carries no weight. Like ... one person who has millions of subs posted a video with the product ... of course it went viral lol. They could smear mud on their face and the mud would go viral. What I dislike the most is how every other social media site (YT, IG and FB) are all trying to be TikTok now. God forbid each social media site have its own purpose and identity anymore. Now they're all chasing the same template of whichever one is the most popular in the moment. And TikToks are everywhere -- no matter which social media site I use -- the same Tiktoks are on every one. It's inescapable.
Insightful observations. I personally still prefer RUclips over other platforms because it gives me a measure of control that I like.
The reason that I stopped using TikTok was exactly what you said - it becomes kind of addictive. I found myself waking up with TikTok songs in my head, spending more than an hour a day on the app, etc. and it honestly kind of freaked me out how well the algorithm got to know me. I prefer RUclips because I am able to pick and choose what I want to watch and protect my own personal peace.
I think the same people that are “over” the challenges and tacky trends for RUclips, are still over it for TikTok- it’s just that there is a new generation that hasn’t seen these things yet, and that is drawing views.
My favorite types of accounts are the beauty YT that aren’t super popular yet, don’t have sponsorships (or have them infrequently or they specify they only take sponsorships of products/brands they already love and use) and don’t have millions of followers. They’re the most genuine and I value their unbiased option the most. I trust their judgement and recommendations. I enjoy watching your channel for this reason!
Yes same! You'd love my channel then. And you're absolutely welcome there. 😘♥️
Couldn’t agree more! I enjoy TikTok too but lately I can’t help but quote Taylor, “I think I’ve seen this film before.”
You spoke my mind!
Filters on here and tiktok... When I find out if someone uses ANY kind of filter, I unsubscribe, immediately. People can't show what product looks like if there is any filter on it. People wonder why all of us who look in a real mirror and have to leave the house, hate ourselves.
I love your deep dives/discussion videos, they're my favorite!
I definitely agree that tiktok is loosing relatability. Going outside of the beauty community, the Charli Damelio is from my home town and a year older than me. When she first blew up, everyone was talking about it, good and bad stuff, but like she still felt relatable. She would come back to CT and like we have mutual friends who she flew out to LA. Now she hasnt been home in over a year and talks to like no one from her, and no one here talks to her because she just doesn’t feel like one of us anymore. I also see influencers on there talking about how relatable they are because of where they came from, but they are so out of touch with reality. Like when they go on three trips a month and get a new designer bag like every other day, they are no longer a relatable person.
I thought the same thing, for about 2 months or some I’m starting to see a lot … a lot of post from RUclipsrs I follow post all these extravagant trips they are doing with cosmetic companies, the insane amount of PR packages and how out of this world they are. All I could think of was “here we go again with all these influencers trying to sell you all of these products from these companies even if they are not good products, just to keep themselves on the list of those out of this world trips” I don’t have tik tokband refuse to get one because (personal opinion here!) I believe the majority of this “overnight influencers” are not so bright and I honestly do not trust their reviews in products when it seems they’ve only making things go viral to gain fame themselves and nos of those products are crap.
Totally...
After all this time, I still haven’t figured out how to not have videos immediately play when I open the app. I always have to make sure my sound is off on my phone before I open the app.
Tik tok does not crack down on undisclosed sponsorship but I have a child in the background while I do makeup and they take it down for danger to children the app is very frustrating. I began building a channel here because I like to consume beauty content here most! Thank you for talking about this !
Hi Kelly! Thanks for the info on TikTok. I have the app again, I deleted it and reinstalled it but rarely watch it. I am older and find the content more suited to 18 year olds which just doesn’t interest me. I know you are young as compared to me but I totally enjoy watching you with the longer RUclips content. I like getting to know the RUclipsrs I follow. I loved watching your big move recently. Please stay as genuine as you are! Loved your makeup today!! Will def be trying your liquid blush and highlighter mix and the matte pink eyeshadow!! And I totally agree with you about ‘bad brow days’!!!! Thanks for all and please stay real young lady, you’re a pleasure to watch!
Also... The lying about loving every product really makes me sick. Most people do it and it really just makes me hate what the beauty community has come to.
You are doing such a great job with this type of content! It makes your channel even more enjoyable to have multiple types of beauty content coming from you.
I imagine that the demographic on tiktok is much younger, so there are a lot of new influencers and viewers. Hence, the same trends and tricks are working again. I'm not on tiktok so this is definitely interesting to me!
I don’t really like tik tok and love long form RUclips, but I did see one the other day that this gen z girl was amazed by butterfly clips and doing the 90s hairstyle and was calling it a brand new thing you can do with your hair!! 🤦🏻♀️ girl that’s the hairstyle I grew up with in the 90s/early 2000s 😂
Kelly you’re just so great , wish I would’ve found you years ago to support, but better late than never! Don’t think I’ve missed a video in a couple months ! And these longer format videos are my favorite 💖
This is a conversation that has been playing in my head but I have no one to talk to about as I don’t use any other form of social media. Thanks for putting this topic out there! It is fascinating!
I think it’s a trend that will pass hopefully sooner than later. As a creator and a viewer I like to thoroughly explain things as I also like to watch reviews and tutorials that are thorough. I get here and there a short video is nice but half the time it goes so fast I don’t know what is going on and you barely get to see the end result. As a creator it’s frustrating because there are alot of views on shorts but no engagement and nobody even watches the long videos you put alot of time and effort into. I understand maybe my content just sucks 😂😂 but I was hoping for a little community with good engagement. Makeup is like a book club for me 😊 With that being said I have noticed even the bigger channels don’t get the engagement they used to either though. I also understand I’m getting old and alot of viewers are much younger and I guess this generation simply wants fast idk lol.
Yep, I'm one of those that's completely anti TikTok. I'm pretty sure I view it differently than most. Just like the television as well as RUclips, TikTok manipulates what people believe but just at a much faster rate. RUclips creators are called "influencers" after all. People jump on trends so quickly without a thought. I see how very little people know how to think for themselves. It's actually kind of scary. Not to mention that TikTok is owned by a Chinese tech co. Just something to think about.
👏💕
Such an interesting video! The thing I want to add is, that even though I do watch beauty content on Tiktok I suddenly realised that all reviews they do are first impressions and is never mentioned again! It is not helpful at all! I do not need an opinion about a product that is only few mins on your face! And the whole i will let you know how it will wear and never doing it.. 😅 drives me crazy.. ALSO!! All products they review they love. They love a product that they used for 5 minutes..
good morning kelly! so excited for the video cause this topic honestly intrigues me as i don’t use tiktok at all, don’t get the hype. i’ll edit the comment with my own opinion when i finish watching!
my opinion: i think introducing longer videos might be detrimental to tiktok because i hardly see anyone make/watch three-minute videos they already have as an option to make on the app. and i don’t think youtube will be replaced by tiktokt because i feel like commentary videos on youtube, which are mostly all longer, have been getting the most amount of views for a while now, and i just don’t see that genre translating to tiktok the same way shorts/reels haven’t really translated all that well to youtube/instagram. when it comes to my personal experience with tiktok, i don’t use it because i actually find it boring seeing similar type videos over and over again. on top of that, i don’t think tiktok is better at combatting the exisiting societal beauty standards but rather further reinforces them to a degree, all while making people even more chained to their phones than they already are. i’ve tried getting into tiktok three times, which means i installed and reinstalled the app three times, but ended up deinstalling it three times as well because i simply don’t see the appeal i guess. it’s addicting for three days to me and then i just don’t enter the app at all and rather watch youtube videos and listen to podcasts
p.s. i personally really love it when you do chatty videos about your thoughts on brands and the industry! i mean i enjoy all of your content and i really do have notes on my phone filled with your makeup (and skincare) recommendations, but these longer videos from you really do appeal to me
Maybe it's because I'm old but I downloaded TikTok and then deleted it again after exploring it for a few hours. I found the short, constantly stimulating content highly annoying.😂 I don't want to watch 85 jam packed clips in 10 minutes. Would much rather sit and listen to someone for awhile.
I agree with you on video lengths. On Instagram and TicTic when a video gets to be over 2 mins I typically will stop watching. I definitely go to RUclips for the longer videos and have it playing while I am getting ready or doing other things.
I don’t have tiktok but seen them on RUclips snorts and Instagram. I find that the beauty reviews are so fast. It’s like people get PR make a quick video and are like that is so nice! I don’t see actual detailed reviews
I only had TikTok for a short amount of time. Once I noticed that it affects my ability to do stuff for university, I immediately deleted it. Now, that I see some of the beauty content from TikToks are uploaded here on RUclips shorts as well, I totally agree with all of the points you made in this video. There is this one beauty Influencer that I see occasionally being recommended on my feed, her name is Christxiee, and I can´t watch her anymore, because she is constantly making videos about celebrity make-up. Also, she is really uninformed and asks about things that you can easily google. For example, it doesn´t make sense to her why Shu Uremura´s lash curler fits eastern eyeshapes. Girl, this is a Japanese brand. Or there is another creator that swatches 100 y.o. expired make-up on her skin, even though everyone in the comments is saying that she shouldn´t do that. I mean, I expect common sense, but I guess that has been thrown out of the window.
She’s super pretty and young which seems to appeal to TikTok. I don’t think she would last on RUclips though as makeup influencers here have quite a bit more skill.
@@skinsciencebymira Christxiee is my age, so 27/28....I wouldn't say that this is the age that appeals to TikTok, but since she is Asian, she looks younger than she is. However, I also don't think that she would last on RUclips. Even though she is super popular with the younger audience and people who are also celebrity Makeup crazy.
I really hope not. I love watching RUclips before I go to bed. I want longer videos
Just discovered your channel because of this video and I'm SO glad I did. Fantastic perspective!
I don't watch YT "shorts" even from my favorite channels.
It's addictive for different kinds of content. I do like some makeup trends on there, but the viral products are always hit or miss.
I apply my foundation the exact same way when I'm almost out, so thank you that made me giggle 😊
Love this video and it is super interesting to see how all of the main platforms for beauty content go through this cycle! I do love tiktok, but I feel like it’s the first app that I can see has actively made a difference in how my brain works, which is terrifying 😅 The constant scrolling, hearing/watching a video about a new thing every 30-60 seconds, etc has genuinely changed my ability to focus. It’s such a fun app but I do wonder what it’s doing to its users mentally on a large scale.
I can’t stand tiktok and it’s not surprising as I’m not the target demographic; I’m too old (at the grand old age of 31🤣). Tiktok feels aimed at teenagers and early 20s.
I think tiktok is killing people’s attention spans with its super short ever ongoing reel of videos (& I say this as someone with adhd!). It’s just so painfully obvious it’s designed to be addictive. I also hate that you don’t select the video - what I like about RUclips is that I choose the content I watch.
I’m old enough to remember social media becoming a thing. I remember when MySpace started taking off. I remember Facebook replacing it. I remember RUclips starting. By the time Instagram and Snapchat happened I already felt sick of most social media. I got tiktok for a week and hated it. I have no social media other than RUclips & no interest in joining any more. If the content and the creators I watch move platforms I won’t follow them there 🤷🏼♀️
I totally agree 1000%
I’m 36 tho lol. I never downloaded TikTok cuz I don’t want to get addicted and have it take too much of my time away. I prefer to watch a RUclips video as my relaxation time. I only have a fb because all my family is on there and it’s nice to keep up with everyone. I have a big family.
Also sadly some of the RUclipsrs I watch barely do YT videos anymore, they’re more focused on TikTok. I’ve unsubscribed. They’re coming once every couple months and just to promote something. No thanks
I know a larger creator on TikTok and people try to get him to do a sponsorship and then tell him that he doesn’t need to disclose. The creator refuses to accept unless they are able to. It’s not just one company/person…it’s been multiple! I was shocked
I love how you do your makeup. You look so pretty.
The only time I will 'watch' TikTok is when my fave creators watch and critique it. I'm not planning to voluntarily go and watch there. I'm a 'boomer' and proud of it.😍
I never got into tictok. I’m RUclips all the way. I like to enjoy a tutorial on how to do something and gain my skills that way. Not on a 60 second filtered video. Love your channel Kelly! 🥰
I love youtube. Will always be my fav. I am new to ur channel but absolutely loving ur content kelly xxx
Loving this kind of content Kelly!!! Thanks for all your hard work
I love your all matte pink shadow look! I don't have one of those palettes but I'm gonna use some of my others ones to replicate that as much as I can.
This was a really interesting discussion. I think something you mentioned should be examined further and that is taking into account is the average age of the user base and average age of the most popular content creators per platform.
TikTok is young, as an app but also literally the user age skews very young, and there hasn't been a crackdown on content by age like RUclips had a few years back.
I think part of the reason it's so cyclical to watch from the outside is because generations move in cycles so for gen z & gen alpha this is the first time they are experiencing these products, techniques, & trends. So with the self absorption of youth, they assume they're the first to find something just because it was new to them. I think the speed with which the content cycle is moving for TikTok though is where we can have hope that the mass availability of information accessible through the internet allows us to learn the solutions used in the past rather than having to discover them again.
I would love to see your take on what impact this increased speed moving through trends & problems could mean for the new problems or opportunities that tiktok will find/create. An example your userbase isn't as strong as a creator on TikTok because they follow so many accounts. But as a brand paying for ads I would rather go with TikTok because it has been built as something only viewable on the audience's phone and it requires the full screen. As an advertiser I know that if my ad played it has a better chance of having the watcher's active attention than if it was on RUclips or traditional media where it may have just played in the background.
I’ve wondered if I should try Tik Tok but I just don’t want to go down another social media rabbit hole! I’m sticking with RUclips for now I think.
It’s so interesting in the comments how many people talk about the addictive nature of tiktok. Not sure if I’m just an oddity but like I’ll go through phases where I’ll watch it for a while(esp when depressed/disassociating) but I can also go weeks without it
Definitely love YT, and I don't think it's going anywhere but I do think that creators do need to consider (evaluate) the length of their videos (you being the exception). The new YT options are great. Personally, I'd rather do reels and shorts than Instagram and Tiktok. All of this is also very generation specific. Tiktok is for entertainment - if I want to laugh, that's where I go. If I want to learn, I watch YT. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS TYPE OF CONTENT!
I love Tiffany Ferg and her internet analysis series!! loved this video
I haven’t even gotten a tik tok account because it is so overwhelming. Like a new app I have to learn. I feel like I am still trying to figure out Instagram.
Yay almost to 100K.....
Great points, awesome video!
I don't have a TikTok or IG acct, not interested, I enjoy watching YT videos (like yours) more in depth reviews, GRWM's, chatty videos, I fell more conected to the creators than watching just a few sec/min video that goes by like a flash that I don't even have time to process what I'm watching and on to the next one 💁♀️ nope ... anyways, love your videos! ♥️
Great video topic! Also love this eye look! Could you do a reel showing a matte eye tutorial?
Off topic, but how to ask a hairdresser for your hair color? I'm in love with your hair!
I don't get Tiktok, for one: the app won't close when I want to but will continue to play three more videos before I can close it. I deleted it.
Great video!! I’m curious on information regarding ‘clean’ beauty and what that really means. Just a thought :)
Instagram is one big shopping addicts nightmare- buy this-buy that- “I can solve all of your problems with this product “ and reels are all over it, no pictures anymore which I hate. X
Random question, what character were you at Disney? Love your videos! You’re beautiful!
That was really interesting, great video Kelly 😊 so I've been watching youtube since way, way back, when creators could only make longer videos if the got a certain amount of views and likes and the evolution is really interesting to see. I think that youtube could become something like a more podcast or informativ platform, which I would love tbh. Like you said, I like watching yt videos as a form of podcast, I like longer videos and thorough reviews, video assays and documentary like stuff. Imo it would be perfect, if eg creators that specialize in making shorts focus more on tiktok, while the longer, more in depth creators focus on yt. so depending on your mood, you know exactly which app to use. and even though I have tiktok, I don't use it at all, but I like watching so via instagram (though it's mostly just Kpop content lol) And I think it's actually annoying if I eg watch a crafting short and want to recreate something, you can't stop in the middle and just have to watch over and over and over again. I've actually lost my ish over a video on how to tie your shoelaces in a creative video one time because of that 🤣🤣
My kids love RUclips shorts as much as they do regular videos. And my teen has started making gameplay content as regular form videos. :)
I really appreciate your content and the effort you put into it!
I don’t watch TikTok, but I can understand the addictive qualities of it. I don’t have the app at all and will continue to play RUclips videos while doing chores around the house.
I stopped using my iG because of that phase where negatively filtering everything gained such popularity…it was right around the same time that Facebook bought iG. Suffice it to say that I don’t even use Facebook.
Hi Kelly! I’m interested to know how often do you recommend washing your foundation brush? I know that you use the BK beauty regularly. I never know if I should wash my foundation brush after each use. ?? 😌
I hope youtube is not going away bc I won’t allow myself to be sucked in to tiktok! 😆
I just started my tiktok for my jewelry 😜 very interesting info 😊
I don't watch any shorts I tried both TikTok and IG and fast viewing isn't for me I lv RUclips and always will I've been watching RUclips daily and most the time all day every day for nearly 5yrs as I've been ill and housebound so had to quit my job which killed me as I worked 6days a WK ND hated my day off, but now I'm on the mend I'm planning to start my own beauty channel as I've learned quite abit
I’ve never downloaded TikTok. I don’t have enough time to watch everything. I found myself being too busy to watch my favorite creators in a timely manner anymore. I wish I could, but life has gotten so much busier since we are heading out of pandemic mode.
RUclips pops videos on my feed from content other than just my subscribed channels and I've found some of my fave channels that way 😁
I’m not too familiar with how social media works. What is the benefit of using non-disclosed sponsorships?
Hey,which color do you use on your hair?
It looks amazing,I need to know it
i watch tiktok for shade swatches not so much for makeup. i love it for everything else
I tried tiktok twice, but I don't understand this app, and this app didn't understand me either. I wanted to see beauty and it showed me only breakouts and scrubbing ass😬 RUclips shorts and Instagram reals understand me better because I've already formed my preferences by subscription.
Most people who upload shorts are also positing them on Tik tok so I think most people are just watching them on tik tok but I just saw RUclips added a shorts tab so maybe more people will watch those
I decided early on that I just feel too old for tiktok (and I only just turned 27). I have no need for an app to learn enough about me to have a perfectly curated feed through an algorithm. I can appreciate tiktok in the abstract though, and the best tiktoks will eventually filter their way down to me on tumblr.
For beauty content I think I'll always prefer smaller makeup channels I find on youtube- there is just something nicer and a little bit more real about them. Overall my view on social media as a whole is that I'm so glad I was nearly out of high school when this huge boom started. I can't imagine the pressure a lot of teenagers feel surrounding social media. Either to have followings or to post at all.
As someone who has aspirations to do RUclips full time, I sure as heck hope it's not done hahaha I will say, it drives me nuts that they're all trying to be each other. Like you said, you can go to different apps for different things. RUclips for long form, Tik Tok for short and Instagram for pictures. It's okay to not all be the same?? I get they all want to see the same successes as their competitors but man I'm sick of reels and shorts.
When it comes to beauty content, I only follow on TikTok the creators I subscribe to on RUclips. I still prefer this longer format as I can listen while I do other things. On TikTok, it seems easier to be sucked down the time-sucking rabbit hole
I wish the apps wouldn't try to be each other. I like RUclips for longer content, Instagram for photos (I hate reels in the middle of my feed, it drives me crazy), and TikTok for a quick hit of something.
Not a fan of tiktok, I just know I'll never leave, lol. I like RUclips more, I prefer longer and more in detail content and reviews.
Also, what did you think of that New Mod palette? I thought about getting it now in their sale, but got something else instead. Might get it in the future, but wanted to know your thoughts for future reference, lol. I might get Ambiance as well, maybe the mini.
My husband forbids me to get tik tok, which sounds terrible but I am going to listen to him. He is an internet security specialist and says Tik Tok is Chinese spyware. I’ll watch it if people post it on RUclips or Instagram but it kind of bums me out. Some of my favorite youtubers have said I’m mostly doing Tik Tok now so I miss most of their stuff.
Yes! I’ll occasionally watch TikTok videos, but only through a browser. I’ll never download the app.
So refreshing to hear an intellectual speak during a beauty video. I agree with everything you were talking about but I kinda go off about it. Lol.
I can scroll through TikTok all day but I definitely prefer RUclips content in the same way that you do. Currently doing my make-up whilst listening!
So true
Love your video 😍
I don't know what's up with my tiktok, but my algo sucks, they keep showing me the same thing over and over until I get tired (which takes like 5 minutes tops) , yeah, I love dog videos, but 10 videos in a row is too damn much, I like other stuff too ya know? But I can't access it because the algo is too afraid to recommend me anything new and I don't know what to look for there without finding the mainstream creators. I also notice Tiktokers steal lots of stuff, like they see something go viral and they do the exact same thing and some go even more viral, which sucks and they should find a way to prevent that
This isn't related but I picked up the ud naked honey on sale and it's pretty good..there's actually pigment!!
RUclips was such a precious online space until companies started harnessing its advertising potential. Still I prefer YT over any other platform because I like content to be long, informative and entertaining. I like to watch YT videos when getting ready, I like them in the background when I am cooking or tidying up, there is no way that IG or Tiktok could replace that. I hate hanging on my phone watching 1000 short videos and still not feeling satisfied, not entertained. I watch YT to decompress, those other platforms stress me out, give me headaches. And I hate those gimmicky videos, I remember when they dominated IG. But I have to say, many of my favorite creators don't post that regurlarly on YT anymore, they only post when there is sponsorships to cover or they post and half of the videos contain product placements, constantly trying to sell stuff. Many have lost touch with regular people, lives, incomes. Whoever reviews and recommends expensive subscription boxes just for some convenience or a blow dryer, foundation etc. for a couple of 100 dollars, doesn't know how it is to life with financial constraints aka as many subcribers and supporters of those channels.
I only watch shorts from people i follow. I know Samantha March has posted some and I'll watch those
Watching my teen scroll TikTok is like watching compulsive gamblers at the slot machines.. same mechanism- same dopamine receptors..I’m afraid to see what the next social medial app will be like 🥺
I like TikTok but like you said it’s addictive more as it gets to know you and I have taken my time to carefully curate my algorithm that once I’m on I can’t get off and I have adhd so I hyperfixate and have a dopami e deficiency. My usually watch time for TikTok is at night after work but once I get on I can’t get off. So I just don’t get on anymore
RUclips scratches a totally different itch for me. Like you said, for longer entertainment I watch RUclips. TikTok is a scrolling entertainment like instagram. Very interesting talk!
This is sooooooo true...!
I send my husband so many videos on tik tok 😂 I get annoyed with tik tok all the time but I like the format. It is much easier than Facebook or Instagram where you are bombarded by ads every two seconds.
I'm 45. So....I've been around since the olden days of the internet. AND......every new generation discovers it all in their own way on their own aps in their own time. Each iteration I find more interest and delight in how the newbs do it and use it and share ideas and knowledge. Tic Toc is just that for me. :) It is REALLY addictive BTW.
