- We begin the process of getting the 99 GMC safari van back on the road, by making it completely immobile. It was a real challenge and became a game of inches lowering the body and squeaking the drivetrain out and scooting the engine hoist back which was holding the body up.
We rolled the entire subframe out below the body because we had no lift and didn't feel like cutting the radiator core support and welding it back on.

Wow,talk about turning a fairly small job into a massive project. I have done many pre - and post face-lift Astro/Safari engine replacement jobs,I used to maintain a fleet for a company that used dozens of them.
Every one of them was done out the front, and the upper rad support can be cut and welded back on the post face-lift vans,GM used to sell a kit that had the plates for the repair. These used to take a work day start to finish.
Thanks for doing this and posting it in the group. This is exactly how I'm gonna have to do mine. It's gonna be a while but by the time I grab my next astro, there will be a ton of work already done to the front end of this one, so I'll just be swapping everything over. Plus, I'll be swapping the drivetrain from a Silverado. Manual trans, manual transfer case, etc ..
You are welcome! We searched a bit before doing it and didn't find much in terms of doing it this way, so we figured it would be worth putting something together as we figured it out. We're glad you enjoyed it. We are currently finishing the motor tear down so we can send it down to the machine shop to get mic'd out and brought into spec. We will have a video on that as well.

I swapped motors on two Chevy school busses like this, front suspension, cross member and trans dropped out. Had the bodies balancing on barrels LOL crazy.

All you had to do was remove the front radiator support and grill, take the intake manifold off and it comes out the front
