This is a long one. If you don't want to watch the whole thing, just watch the first 2 minutes and the last 2 minutes to see how they started and how they turned out. Thanks!
I laughed so much my sides hurt when you said, "Only a mother could love it, but I am it's mother kinda!" thanks for trying with these inexpensive materials - awesome!
Matt, you make me HAPPY! You inspire me, as a frustrated, starving artist. It's not my mainstream but something that I've had a passion for, since I was very young. Parents would NOT promote it. It's stunted me! NOT any more.
I'm glad to finally find someone else who loves Dollar Tree (now $1.25 tree 😒) as much as my husband and I do! We usually end up there at some point every single date night 😅🤣
I just started to see if I could do this. 2023 am 73 years old. They no longer have the floral wire but have the stones and sea glass. I got 20 gauge galvanized to practice with at small local store. Well, not doing very well. This video looked the easiest for me, but alas, still working at the first one. You are a blast to watch. Fun and real. You make a mistake and you just work with it. Good instructions for wire wrapping and, I think, life itself. Thanks loads. 😊
So, Matt...I bought some river stones at Dollar Tree and put them through some coarse grit in my rock tumbler to remove the wax. Then put them through a pre-polish, polish and finally a burnishing cycle. They came out beautifully shiny & I can't wait to put them to use!
Excellent job. I didn't realize till months later some had a wax coating. I boiled some for 30 min in a pot and the wax kept floating up to the surface and I kept rubbing them with paper towels and throwinf them back in to boil more. Tumbling sounds more efficient.
Thanks for trying the Dollar Tree wire! I have wondered how good it was, if the finish rubbed off, if it was strong and easy to bend. Good to know it flattens too. Keep an eye out for more colors. I have seen red, yellow, green and blue too.
"Are you guys still watching?" 🤣 I'm not going to lie, felt a little anxious watching this one, bc I was cheering you on that this one would work. Turned out good though!😊
MATT thank you for sharing your techniques, I've been amazed at myself for realizing that the designs are unlimited and so much fun to make, there's no stress behind the creativty!
Love it! I can hardly wait till my purple wire arrives to try making one. But right now I’ve mad one ugly silver blob, earring, maybe? Aagghhh! Need to practise more!
Your tutorial is awesome and easy to understand even for beginners. I have been wire wrapping stones and gemstones for a while now. Recently a friend contacted me for advice on wire wrapping stones. I referred her to your tutorial. Hope you don't mind. Ruth
Thank you for demonstrating so clearly that art can be accomplished by trial and error. Plus it’s a fun and accessible demo with very cheap materials! Awesomesauce. 😍
I got some of those stones to try to paint but I had to wash and scrub them because they had some weird brownish wax on them. I'm gonna have to try to find the rest of the bag and try this out.
Funny I did this when I was learning to wire wrap didn’t use that aluminum wire but the rocks from dollar store , I’ll have to try it awesome, I also just used the natural rocks not the black ones
In carpentry, I understand that there is a rule, Measure Twice, Cut Once!. If you took a bit of string and wrapped the stone around the section where the arms should go and used that as guide it might take some of the guess work. But of course , I would never want to impede your spontaneous experiments.
I just love your work! You are so spontaneous and creative with the quintessential American 'can do' spirit. I grew up in a conformist Asian society, and this is liberating and refreshing to watch. I feel empowered every time I watch you do some other crazy piece of art. Thank you, Matt, for expanding my soul with your fun tutorials. You are the best! 💕👋
I want to thank you..you have kept me company through this pandemic. I am impressed with your talent both as an artist and a comic! LOL! I have to ask a question ..what sign are you? Im going to take a wild guess..were you born under the sign of Cancer? I was at a gallery in Hollywood CA with a group of 4 or 5 other artists when we all found out that along with our passion for art ..were born in June and July! Just curious...😊 Thanks for the instruction and entertainment!
I wonder if you could paint a stone like this for variety and interest on the cheap. I'm all about frugal. I recently made a bracelet out of glass vase fillers, or you could possibly use glass stones that are put in aquariums. It's not my original idea. I saw someone make jewelry from those glass stones once years ago. It was beautiful.
My experience with Dollar Store stones (the black ones) is that they are oiled to get that dark color and when soaked in water they turn gray. I love a nice stone. Sometimes, some states, you can find petrified wood, agate, etc., on the ground. Also, there are lots of sellers of tumbled stones.
This is easily fixed. You have a choice of: 1. Rubbing stones with Microcrystalline or Carnauba wax and buffing them. This will need to be repeated occasionally or after washing stones. 2. Tumbling them in a small tumbler $100 on Amazon with the right media to permanently polish the stones. 3. Coating stones in clear diluted Polyurethane to give a permanent shine. Dilute water based Poly with water, or dilute oil based Poly with Mineral Spirits. I work only with Varathane Oil Based Clear Interior Satin Polyurethane. I dilute with 50:50 with Mineral Spirits. If too thick, add more Mineral Spirits or Paint Thinner. Let dry on prongs so there are no marks on reverse side. Recoat if necessary. You only want a light coating. Let it cure for 1-2 days to fully harden before you work with the stone. Nice and shiny.
Would love to do stuff like this! Curious about the hammering though, is it quite a process? I assume you hammer after you make the shape only. What kind of platform do you hammer it on?
Very creative Matt, I look up your designs whenever I have stones or tumbled rocks. I have these beautiful agates that look like sliced lemon wedges. Can’t get the wire around them. Perhaps you have one to show with flattened wire. Thanks for sharing.
I've never worked with hammered wire. So, could you start with a loop, then hammer the wire without bending it first, then wrap as you go? Putting in the bends as you need them? Anyway, just a thought as I haven't worked with hammered wire before. Love your creative commentary & jewelry design! Subbed!
J. Harrison, it'a much harder to bend after being hammered and also harder to make smooth loops and curves. So the rule is you bend it into the shape you want as much as possible before hammering... But also, you CAN'T hammer two crossed pieces or they will break. So some parts that are going to wrap around each other you can only shape AFTER the hammering.
As Matt mentioned you have to bend first then hammer for two reasons: 1. When you hammer or twist or work with metal wire, it 'work hardens'. It is less bendable than in new state. To make it like new you have to 'anneal' it or heat it enough to relax it. Another whole technical chapter. This is chemistry and material science. 2. Once you hammer it, it turns from a round cylindrical shape to a flat rectangular shape. Now its hard to work with not only due to hardening, but because you have to watch for the flat shape to lay in a certain way without stressing out the thinner metal wire. More manipulation, with a more fragile, stiffer, more prone to break wire. See? This is why you do most of your bending before hammering. You have more flexibility and less work in angling the wire. Try it out and you will see right away. Its only theory till you experience it. Watch lots of videos from others to understand why some things are done in a certain order. Know that wire comes in 3 flexibilities: Dead Soft (ideal for wrap), Half Hard (Ok for frame but not wrap), Hard (do not use). Craft wire is often Half Hard but it looks like this 12 gauge aluminum is Dead Soft, so hammering it makes it a bit harder for a frame.
@@MattsCrazyArt How crazy! Is there some "scientific" explanation for that? I believe you, I'm just curious. I went to 2 of my local $Tree stores yesterday and neither one had it though! Just my luck, now I need it, but can't find it! I Did find the sea glass though. 😁

It's 12 gauge aluminum wire and I hammer it flat. You can sometimes get it as floral wire from a Dollar store or order it on amazon.

I have determined that Dollar Tree doesn't carry this purple wire anymore.
What would you reccomend instead?
you can find "aluminum 12 gauge wire" on amazon
I was wondering how u flatted they wire??🤔
I hope that you or someone else buys you a good pair of nylon tipped pliers. They will save you from scratching the wires. Easy to find on Amazon :)
...or wrap a 1-inch piece of leather around the pliers tip to prevent scratches too
