It's really ironic that this video showed up in my sub box today. I just quit my jobs because my boss was being a jerk. It's really odd because she's the opposite of everything said in this video. Now I feel a lot better about quitting! Thank you!

Abel This often happens in companies, where your bosses or higher-ups seem to have a complete disconnect and conflicting opinions from those who are in the workforce. A great leader is someone who treats himself no better than his peers/followers, and integrates themselves amongst all levels and lines of workers beneath him. If a leader does this, they personally may experience the same problems/struggles/perspective as his followers, thus allowing him to understand what can be done in order to make things work better. If a leader works with his followers, listens to their opinions openly, and acts to make their problems go away, they create a better environment and the trust/respect for said leader is increased. Leaders who cannot grasp the importance of this are bound for failure. The problem with our modern day companies is that the people who are selected to be leaders, are not natural leaders so they lower the groups potential, and restrict the real natural leaders to emerge and become contributors.

+Gerry Morganelli I know this reply is old but I just have to say, I agree with everything you just said...EXCEPT the natural leader part. What is a natural leader? I don't think there's a such thing. I think there are people who have many of the traits of a "typical" leader or what we think a leader should be but being a leader is something you have to work for. Leadership is a skill and anybody with drive, ambition, and passion can be a leader if they work hard for it...Just my 2 cents.

One thing I've always learned while being a leader is to always keep your cool, even in difficult and stressfull situations. Those are the best times to motivate your collegues. In my early days I've seen that when I panic or stressout, it will contaminate to my men and overall morale will go down. That's the only one I've missed. Great video's, I really like how clear and motivational they are.

To add to the make people feel important point, becoming friends with your subordinates allows you to better judge who is best equipped to handle specific jobs while being able to improve their mediocre points and avoiding their weaknesses. Also helps you make your subordinates better making your life easier while adding value to them. Everyone wins!
Really being a leader is just about being able to bring out the best in others, just with more people while trying to achieve a common goal. We all have friends, and we all have ones we make better. We all also have goals. Leadership is just about combining these two.

Team Leader, care sector: My 12 commandments :-)
    1. Be a good person, it's that simple, reflect on the times you've experienced bad leadership, don't repeat it, improve on it, be the leader you would want to work hard for
    2. Be aware of team morale, spend time chatting with the team casually, have a bit of fun, be part of the team, get your hands dirty occasionally, lead by example
    3. Delegate appropriately and praise good work, make the team feel involved and be patient with staff that need more time for certain tasks
    4. Upskill staff and make them feel valued and supported, identify potential, support and encourage it, identify areas of weakness and support staff to address this
    5. You don't need to discipline staff for every poor decision they make, sometimes they need a bit of slack, have some humanity, compassion, and humility
    6. Appear calm, assured and positive, even if you don't feel that way inside, especially, like me, if you are fairly new to leadership in the care sector, you need to be their rock
    7. When staff are out of line, invite them politely into your office, ideally in front of other staff, so they know who's in charge and that you ain't a pushover
    8. Never let staff get a negative reaction out of you, you will lose respect, if you are challenged in front of the team, ask them to step into the office for a chat
    9. Get staff involved, have regular team meetings, handovers, keep it focused on work and never allow negative chit-chat about staff in front of you and the team
    10. Do not break promises to staff, this will lead them to see you as untrustworthy, follow through on everything you say or give a damn good reason why you can't
    11. Give staff the opportunity to shine and lead the way, staff will often come up with better suggestions/ideas than you, explore and implement them when it's good, know when you're wrong
    12. Rota's are big to winning staff over, be flexible, be considerate of needs, but also know service needs come first, draw the line when required, rotas ain't a democracy, you call the shots.

I was a DI in the AirForce auxillary for 4yrs and had to train 54+ cadets and teach them how to be a good leader..
I learned that I wasn't such a great leader but my followers were teaching me how to meet their needs and it ultimately led to uniformity of the whole group...

Agreed! 👍 It is interesting how so many qualities of leadership run into conflict with need. Many managers get so focused on trying to "motivate" their staff they end up missing what would have them demoralized in the first place. A poor environment, personal stress, a lack of direction. A manager can take huge steps to being more "motivational" just by being more empathetic.

The video was done well, and the information is useful for individuals looking to further their leadership skills.
My one critique is the choice to use a military leader in this setting. Patton is a convoluted individual when it comes to leadership, while he did lead from the front, he also condemned individuals suffering from "battle fatigue", originally known as "shell-shock" and contemporarily known as PTSD, as simply cowards. He even went so far as to assault two individuals under his command for showing signs and symptoms of post-traumatic stress and sent them back to the front. He instructed his officers to do the same. This attitude was adopted and enforced by countless junior officers for generations to come and led to a culture of suppressing positive mental health in the military.
We have to be careful when we point out military leaders as examples of great leadership. Remember, at the end of the day they send young men to war, not the workforce.

Great point in Tip 5: Praise in public - correct in private. All too often leaders forget to check their own emotions and feeling and lack EQ and damage their character by punishing or correcting someone in public instead of private. Its ok to disagree but definitely need to ensure private matters are kept private. I liked the video.

  • @ryzewisdom

Great video! I love the animation but what really stood out was the part about vulnerability. A leader, people in general, HAVE to be vulnerable. No one and nothing is perfect so trying or pretending to be will end up hurting you and your business in the long run. Being vulnerable and open is definitely a great way to win. Thanks for this video. I got a lot out of it! ~Cyn

Another good tip, believe it or not, is that a confident wrong answer is better than an " I don't know". I was taught this in the army and carried it over to my career as an equities account manager. You can always correct yourself later on but having an answer on the spot will make you stand out. P.S. this has become one of my favorite channels recently. High quality content and consistence aren't too common on this website these days. Keep up the exceptional work man.

    • @battletoads22
      @battletoads22 8 лет назад +22

I wouldn't do that. The wrong answer could cause serious problems down the road and the correction may come too late. Instead, I'd tell people, "I don't know, but I will find out".

I know how conflicted the comments are, but I definitely think the music side of the videos should vary more.Even if this time around it wasn't a hit I've really been liking more diversity in the background. (that and i kinda think the old music was annoying)
I don't know who said it but someone who ran a huge brand once said something like "People are averse to change, but if you just keep the changes, eventually people will get used to it like nothing ever happened" so my advice would be to go with what you want in the end. If after a while people still don't adjust, though, that's when you know you've made a mistake.

I am a leader and I am on way up. The most important thing in the WAREHOUSING industry is "SURROUND YOURSELF WITH GREAT PEOPLE". Do no befriend shit workers or fuckers with bad attitudes. After I did that, I have excelled. I am 32 and being a productive warehouseman is not enough. Sometimes you have to go through difficult bridge burning with old compadres. I attract a lot of people but I've always had that wrong person in the groupie who starts drama or tries to actively make toxicity. I'm one of those naturally born leaders but usually a supervisor personality or something similar tries to start shoddy rumors about me so been tryna learn how to see red flags with others and counter it better without losing my career. Leadership definitely isn't innate, charisma is at times but everyone has something to work on or overcome.

You could benefit by making a video on how to be persuasive.

@Practical Psychology, you should post up your sources for your videos. Leadership is a complex topic and I am weary of your eclectic approach to it.

Hey, man! I really enjoyed your videos thus far. They really give precious advice to me. On this video I only didn't like the fact that you used Thomas Edison as an example. I've read some controversial stuff about him and I kinda dislike him. Anyway that might be just me. In any case, keep up the good work, it is really helpful not only to me but to other people as well. Really looking forward to your next vid. Cheers!

Some good tips. But I would be wary of sugar-coated feedback. If it's 1-1 then it's OK to be direct and honest.
