    That's...not even superman/Clark Kent. That's Superman's SON, Jon Kent! Like at least get your facts right. Second off, Superman has been used for so many political issues throughout the century, including immigration and, guess what? GAY PEOPLE TOO! That person has never read a superman comic in his entire life and I can tell.

      I was looking for someone to mention this - this isn't a retcon, there's literally nothing to complain about. Superman's son can be whatever sexuality, it doesn't change anything about Superman's story. I feel like a lot of these conservatives actually know this (it's usually the first thing people tell them) and are choosing to ignore it to further THEIR agenda.

    I would also like to point out the children, on the whole, don't read comics anymore. The market has dwindled to the point where the TARGET audience of mainstream American comics is men in their 20s-40s and maybe, just maybe, they need a little more exposure to queer representation. He just spouted words he read from the first 10 pages of a college politics textbook and considered that enough research lmfao. So, I'm Black, and that Black guy about 4 minutes in is making a fairly common/valid point but basing it in a fundamental misunderstanding of what privilege is and how it functions. White liberals and white leftists often assume they have already done the work or that they don't need to do the work to address their racism. It's also common for white liberals/leftists to overstep some serious boundaries while engaging with Black people and Black communities. For example, calling Black people who they don't think are radical or liberal enough 'traitors' or 'stupid' because they personal think Black people should be radical. Or insisting they know what Black people and Black communities need better than the communities do. Basically, it is common in my experience and the experiences of many other POC that white liberals and leftists often perform imperialist white saviorism without being willing to critically assess what they're doing and why they're doing it. These are valid points and also things that Black and other POC liberals and leftists are discussing as well. The issue, obviously, is the way he's tied it to a misconception about what privilege actually is.

    People don't understand how Superman has always been a very political and progressive character. Batman is man vs man and Superman is man vs self. He always had the most interpersonal and political comics as a story about a man who can do anything fighting a big bad isn't intresting. One of my favourite of Clarks stories was when he was dying but took some of his time to stop a depressed girl who was about to kill herself.

    The thing is that most comics aren't for kids anyways. They are usually rated t or t+ and some are marked for specifically adults only. I mean there is literally a black widow series that centers around kids being tortured and killed on the internet. I wouldn't say the target audience for that is kids. at my local comic shop, there is a very small section of kids comics that truly like, for little kids. That superman comic would not be one of them.

    Okayyyy, here we go. Firstly, Comics! They are not written for children. Most can be very gruesome. Just because its drawn or animated, doesn’t mean its for kids. I used to work at a comic store and the only ones that bought them were on average 20 to 30. I saw no kids dragging their parents to buy the latest issues. Secondly, Superman! He’s literally an immigrant from an other planet that blue up due to climate irregularities (it was because it was getting closer to the sun not pollution, but similar enough). It makes sense that he wouldn’t want his adoptive home planet to be destroyed due to human stupidity. And as an immigrant, or rather alien, himself, he wants to help people like him who just need a home. Its not force feeding liberal ideas, its just a logical progression of what Superman would value based on his upbringing.
    Finally, about free health care and taxes… we pay the taxes… so we get the free health care… everyone pays the taxes and thats why they get it. What made him think that people don’t pay it… where did he think the taxes came from? I don’t know how other places work, but in Canada, everybody pays taxes unless they are frauds or criminals. Thats why everybody gets free health care.

    I call people like that second guy "bootstrap idealists". He's the kind to think that we as black people are not systematically oppressed because "look at how many black people made it in Hollywood or became millionaires". One example of success to them means we all can make it, so they say "black people just need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and stop being (insert all the negative stereotypes here)".
    It's a sort of naivete. They don't want to believe that things are built into our government to make it harder for us, so it has to be something we're doing. It has to be that we are the only ones holding ourselves back. It's an "ignorance is bliss" mindset.
    I do believe that there are some black people who swing so far left that they end up alienating other black people and ultimately end up being racist themselves, but I also think this guy is using those people as a scapegoat for believing what he does.
    Plus, he's conflating "white people have privilege in today's society" with "white people are better than us". Two different statements with wildly different meanings.

    The thing about the folks callin out the comics for pushin agendas is they forget that XMen was written as a parallel to the civil rights battles of the 60s (with prof X being inspired by MLK and Magneto inspired by Malcolm X). And they also were queercoded as they get and included stories that were analogies to queer experiences (eg the idea of hiding ones difference, being forcibly outed, having an appearance that outs you regardless of your desires there, being deemed threats to society/children, being forced out of ones home by ones own parents, etc).
    These were the kind of comic book stories that even gen Xers grew up on; and those stories only got more in favour of protecting human rights and valuing equality and care for other human beings (you kno; like a superhero wud!) for each new generation. And they also became able to show more and more clear stories and not always have to hide the stories behind analogy and metaphors. First thruout millennials childhoods we saw many comics and superheroes (esp on tv) become much more open about talking about racial issues and show the moral thing to do there. They encouraged equal treatment and fought against bigotry alongside fighting the war on drugs and every other PSA thing we got of superheroes tellin us what is moral and immoral.
    And the next generation got stories that had very clear queer subtext and had characters that were clearly intended to be queer but werent able to be open about it, tho eventually those characters wud come out of the closet; and once gay marriage was legalized ofc tons of comics became more open about queer existence. Bcuz they finally can with little fear of being shut down by conservative politicians or other bs like that bcuz they know that the vast frelling majority is in favour of simply encouraging ppl to be allowed to exist and see themselves in media, regardless of their age.

    • @SylviaRustyFae
      @SylviaRustyFae 2 года назад +55

      Its also hilarious they act like these comics are targeted at 4 yr olds; not targeted at 12+ yr olds like they actually are >.> The folks reading these books are often also going thru similar experiences as the characters and coming to understand their (and others for that matter) sexuality and romanticality; and seeing that represented helps them immensely to understand themselves and others. They are mature enuf to understand such topics bcuz they are mature enuf to feel the same things as the characters. Theyre not being shown risque shit either; theyre just kissing and holding hands, maybe hugging too. Its not even romantic beyond maybe the kissing (tho even that; kissing isnt inherently romantic, most folks wud kiss other relatives. A passionate kiss tho is possibly another question but even then; its whether the individuals involved see it as romantic that truly matters)
      As an aromantic; i totes get the want to not see romantic relationships in public... But like, the straights be the ones doing it by far the most and to the worst degree; like even outright sexual shit in public... I saw plenty cishet men or women stick their hands on risque parts of their spouses/partners (eg down their pants/on their boob) in my time workin retail in a walmart. Nvr once did i see a queer couple do somethin remotely close to that; not even a single kiss in public from any of them i ever saw.

      @@Drudenfusz may i ask how you're doing that? Like i can see it coming into play with most of the role playing, but like...combat IS inherently based on what you can do, like if you can throw big rock, then you're likely the throw big rock person that specializes in throwing big rocks, while the quick, nimble one is likely the acrobat that can do sneaky stuff and stab stuff with little blades. Unless you're focusing stats on something unrelated to your class, which doesn't really make sense from a gameplay standpoint.

      @Drudenfusz 2 года назад +30

      @@cartoondeathnoises8756 I have no classes and no stats, the dice rolls do not determine what the character is doing but how the story is going. Thus you can have your character defeat opponents without landing a single hit, since you can describe them hurting themselves with their attacks, or how lucky your character got. There are plenty of action films or adventure books in which the protagonist is not capable of fighting and still does well in fights, since it doesn't matter a character can do, only what they are willing to do. Fights are because of the rolling for hits and damage are because of the lack of depth to them usually incredible boring (at least to me), I prefer more something with emotional engagement where something interesting is at stake and the whole scene has some meaning to it.

Some comics are even 18+ (I read Skin and Earth by the musical artist LIGHTS, and it's 18+, but was in the same section as all the DC stuff. It's also very political talking about gentrification, classism, and bisexuality in regards to social expectations). So I never understood when people would go after comics. Most of them are political anyway, even some of the goofy ones play up political things, even if that's women's rights, fighting for the climate, or saying war is wrong.

Most comics, especially the ones he’s referring to, most definitely aren’t made for kids. They’re intended for mature audiences! Edit: I honestly feel bad for conservatives, it must be difficult to be so stubbornly ignorant and have no idea
    Edit: a topic isn’t sexual unless you’re talking about sex, sex and sexuality are two different things, if I’m talking about sex that’s a sexual conversation, if I’m talking about a man who likes another man, that’s not sexual that’s just ‘hey this person likes this other person’, telling someone that something exists is not forcing it on them or shoving it down their throats or anything like that it’s just telling them it’s a thing

    In regards to what ages of children the comic books are aimed at, most comic books stores will put main line DC/Marvel titles as teen and up, so like 13+, and in some rarer cases, 16+, so really, the youngest age that people would theoretically be reading is the exact age that kids are going to be questioning that kind of thing. And DC themselves made clear at one point that their intended demographic is people in their early 30s, which I personally disagree with, but the point being, no one in the creative or distribution areas is intending for those books to be read by "kids" be they preteen or younger.

    Its truly hard to change the mind of anyone who has a steadfast belief, even with facts and figures; but i def feel youre doing an incred job at taking up that task, while also just being enjoyable to watch for the choir that has often heard similar queer sermons before and is still rdy to amen alongside every grt point made.
