So portal hypertension causes the fluid to leak from the vessels into the peritoneal space?
Random question but does the lab do the actual calculating and give you back the result or does the doctor work it out?
Portal vein thrombosis, as a pre-sinusoidal cause of PH, doesn’t usualy course with ascites in the absence of other predisposing factor, like hypoalbuminemia. Great lecture, tho! Thanks from 🇧🇷

can you please tell me why saag is lower than 1.1 in nephrotic ascites
Hi! Thanks for your question. So a low SAAG tells us that the concentration of albumin in the circulation (serum) isn't so different from the concentration in the ascitic fluid. In nephrotic syndrome, the concentration of albumin in the circulation is likely to be low (hypoalbuminemia). Therefore, the difference between their Serum and Ascitic Albumin concentrations is more likely to be less than 1.1g/dL. As an example, a normal serum albumin concentration is about 3-5g/dL, If our patient has 2g/dL of serum albumin and 1.5g/dL Ascitic albumin, then they'd have a SAAG of 0.5g/dL, which is of course under 1.1. High SAAG means high serum levels COMPARED TO ascites. Cirrhotic liver means liver is failing and can't do its normal function properly, can't produce properly normal blood proteins such as albumin, fibrinogen, complement proteins....
