He emphasises that first person shooters and shoot-em-ups aren't to be confused because in an article he wrote in which he mentioned Doom, his editor helpfully clarified for him that Doom was a shoot-em-up.
I think all of the shows that Craig Charles presented were secretly deleted episodes of Red Dwarf where Dave Lister got bored and started messing around with some holograms in the other rooms on board Red Dwarf.
I'm going to identify all the snippets of music. Stevie wonder - superstition. Phill oakey - electric dreams. Royal philharmonic orchestra - wicked game. Grandaddy - AM 180. Henry Purcell - Music for the funeral of queen Mary.

Holy shit that CRT whine at the end. That must have been one hell of a program to watch on your own CRT television whining away. Nobody misses that noise.
Pebble Count Simulator 2018 just came out. It's SO much better than Pebble Count Simulator 2017 (and I'm talking about after the 6th and final patch). A great game for when you're stoned
This thing is full of fantastic quotes. My personal favourite must've been "a firework display being sick", although I may be biased, being one of those masochistic maniacs who genuinely enjoys shmups like PCB. Still, he's not wrong.
I want to be offended by the fact that he calls strategy gamers armchair hitlers, but when I try to imagine the kill-count I've racked up after going through all the Warcraft, Starcraft, Total War, Paradox, and Dawn of War games, I can't argue. The difference being that Hitler started making people kill each other due to the Versailles treaty and a dodgy racist fantasy. We conquer digital worlds whilst minimizing my casualties and maximizing theirs. For fun.
Ah, how times change. What was once a small corner of entertainment for outcasts is now a worldwide phenomenon that nearly anyone can and does enjoy. 7:14 ah, hello my old friend. Masochism, that is. Still can't get the combination of blaring trumpets and Geiger Counter-esque graze sound effects out of my head.
I like the Consolevania guys, but the premise of Jet Set Willy was not a guy trying to avoid his wife. Willy was forced to clean up his mansion before his housekeeper, Maria, would let him go to bed. They were right about the original release being so buggy it was impossible to complete.
Graham Linehan complains that writers need to read more books and watch less films but then raves about the mustachioed character who is clearly a rip-off of Chef in Apocalypse Now.
This is very outdated now, but still great. Games stories have gotten a lot better. Many of the stories in games recently have been better than most of the stories in recent movies.
They really haven't. You'll get a half-decent one now and again, which inevitably get lauded by the industry with ridiculous hyperbole, "The best writing since Shakespeare!". The writing and storytelling in 99.9%+ of games is dreadful. The plots are unoriginal to the point of cliché. Ditto most story settings. The motives for your character actually doing what they're doing, range from simplistic cliché, to paper thin, to non-existent. The character themselves are lucky if they reach the level of two-dimensional. The complexity of human interaction and character usually portrayed with all the profundity of a shallow, inexperienced teenager. As I said, there is the odd exception but they're incredibly rare and even in theses exceptions, the writing is little more than decent. The only writing style in which games ever exceed this level is with humour.
Huh I forgot about Parodius (Surely pronounced Parody-us, since it's a Gradius Parody... not 7:06) . Shooting penguins, octopus and big boobed ladies in space was fun.
Welp, Fred Harris nailed it. P.S. I find it insulting for any such show made in Britain not to mention either Simon the Sorcerer nor Cannon Fodder. Disgraceful.
Boris Müller Too many nitpickers complained so I changed the title. Apparently saying "Thanks for this free upload of a quality documentary" (or nothing at all failing that) is asking too much of some people. It's STILL the.best quality of it anywhere on the net and it's COMPLETE!

"Games deny you content if you're not good enough" - this guy hasn't played since like the mid 90's. These days games deny you content if you didn't shell out extra cash over the original 60 buck pricetag for the ultra mega shit of the year edition :D
He (Dara O'Briain) now hosts "Go 8 Bit" a comic/celebrity gaming competition series here (in Britain). I think that anecdote was probably part of his act. But "since the 90's" is a bit extreme....! I have had a good few games I struggled with that I would have loved to have seen to the end. (I have also helped a few people get to the end of others! Command and Conquer, C&C Red Alert, The Thing and the original Quake to name a few. I have noticed though the move to "in app" purchases. I have abandoned one or two games because they were too hard without weapons upgrades, etc. However I DID manage to complete "Zombie Roadkill" without paying a penny!
I think was made before all this extra stuff really kicked off. Well 2009 actually, which was before it was in EVERY game. Kinda funny, I was playing Timesplitters 2 with a mate who only plays CoD, FIFA or destiny, He was wondering why loads of stuff was greyed out. I was like "Dude you have to complete the game on hardest difficulty to unlock everything..." That's what Dara was talking about.
Also 'The Last of Us' Never have I ever said. "Sorry, I haven't caught up with Walking Dead. I'm not allowed to even start season 3 because I'm shit at stealth sections of videogames. Yes, I know it's apparently a great story. I'll never fukken see it, though!"
But back in the day there was always (deliberate?) cheat codes to help you progress if needed, is there anything comparable to that in modern games, add-ons and DLC?
Who'd have thought Charlie would go on to make Black Mirror. I've been a huge fan of his ever since the early "Screen Wipe" days. Even back then you could see a bit of angst in his personality. I always suspected he'd do something noteworthy. Maybe a mass suicide or kill his whole family. I obviously mean things that are worthy of a note along side his name. Killing Connie Huq isn't noteworthy in the sense that it should happen. lol. So learning he wrote Black Mirror is no surprise to me or any of his fans. It was bound to happen.
The game with the subliminal messages was called Endorfun. It was meant to be a puzzle game with whispered messages hidden in the music. The messages were all positive things like "We are glad you were born". It was widely criticised as being dull and boring and was mockingly nicknamed End-of-fun.
Love the adult games for the spectrum and atari! Should have called the spectrum one "international jimmy savile simulator" and extended it to buggering children in homes and the top of the pops studio dressing rooms!!!!
This whole thing was ruined for me when Graham said that theres a decline in storytelling and then goes onto name loads of games with great stories and also he said that Price dies at the end of COD4 ... obviously didnt play it.
This originally aired about a month before MW2 was released, so for all Graham knew Price had died. I definitely thought he had when I played MW. But yeah, I agree with you about the storytelling point. There are some great plots being written for games today. That said, there are still plenty of shit ones too, and I take his point about games that go OTT on fancy cut-scenes when lacking any in-depth story.
Actually the way I recall Price's death was a questionable thing right up to COD 6 MW2, where you saw Price and knew he survived. IIRC the last thing you see of Price in COD4MW was a russian guy treating him to CPR shouting "он не дышит" or "he isn't breathing" in russian. So yeah, I thought he was dead after the first MW was over. I might be wrong and missed something.
Well ...what he actually said was .."everything is getting better except the storytelling" which is something I noted back in the early '90's! As with movies (as he also notes) writing is the bit that is always hard to improve..whereas visuals and sound progress naturally with the advance of technology.
Ive been playing since the 70's (Pong, space invaders etc) and the TV industrie, still does not get it !!! All these decades later. They keep making the same mistake. Trying to turn computer games into a variety game show. Rolling out idiot so called celebrities, and making the TV show all about them, and never really showing the true star... What people want to see. The actual games they want to buy and play. Almost 40 years later, and they still do not get it !!! *SMH*
This was a one off show about games in the style of the other "Wipe" shows Brooker made. Part of those shows was that they would have comedians and other public personas talk about the subject of the show. This was never meant to be a comprehensive review show or a look a at the latest games or anything like that; it's a comedy review show that happened to be taking a look at video games for a special episode.
That you think it's something worth bragging about. Like I said to me it was nothing more than a happy coincidence but to you; a brag, your problem not mine, move on.
That same game - if a cop saw you breaking the speed limit by 1 mile an hour, you were likely to be involved in a fatal police chase ... I found myself being VERY well behaved (and the car was quite fragile too ... not many hits before Game Over) Brilliant game though.

You do realize he creates Black Mirror too? But yeah I miss him as a presenter on these Newswipe style shows too
I think reality became so ridiculous it was difficult to make fun of

Oh Hey! Its You!
Did you ever write in to PC zone for one of Charlies kindhearted and friendly replies (and £50)?
What did you do for the show? Was you a researcher?
I provided them information on the retro stuff, gave them clips of old gaming TV shows and lent them some of my old consoles.
Cool 👍
I seriously hope Dara O'Briain has improved his gaming skills over the years 😂
Seriously
The theme is an 8-bit cover of Grandaddy's AM 180! Hope you enjoy it!

Oh wow, I forgot Glinner was in this. It’s bizarre seeing him back before he got obsessed with trans people and ruined his marriage.
And in the writers episode for Screenwipe, sad. What a dick!
Welp, if it isn't the consequences...
Me too, and I also remember really enjoying this bit in the show and what he had to say back then. It seems like a different person almost but nope.
