Michael Jackson/Fred Astaire/Cyd Charisse: The Master & His Teacher
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 дек 2009
- Michael Jackson made it no secret that he was inspired by Fred Astaire. As clearly seen in this short video, it wasn't only his dancing that Jackson mirrored. Notice costume and lyrics.
The video contains clips of 'The Band Wagon'... Fred Astaire's 1953 Musical, and clips from Michael Jackson's short films 'Smooth Criminal', 'You Rock My World', and live performances of 'Smooth Criminal' from the 1992 'Dangerous World Tour', and 1995 'MTV Video Music Awards' performance of 'Dangerous'.
This video is dedicated to two friends who love 'Smooth Criminal'... Joseph McCormick & Richard Jay.
Michael took all of the geniuses and melded them together. That was his magic, he made it all his own, and ALWAYS gave credit where credit was due. He always spoke of his influences and was so grateful to them.
dont forget the truth
@@maiks.2618 Everything they said was the truth🤨
"Study the greats, be greater" -Michael Jackson
"Michael Jackson cant dance, he is the Dance" -Fred astire
+M UO watch Bob fosse in the scene snake in the grass from the movie Little prince 1974 , Mj has completely copied everything from Bob fosse including outfits , dance moves , mannerism and even attitude . Mj also stole from many dancers like Jeffrey daniel , Cooley jaxson , Casper , Boogaloo shrimp , Shabadoo , Electric boogaloo , The lockers , Alberto martinese resortes and a lot more . Mj was such a hacker that he copied Elvis's pet chimp monkey and faked his freindship with copied monkey which he named Bubble , Mj also stole final curtain call idea and many other routines from Elvis . Mj was a copycat , he was inspired less but he copied other dancers , choreographers , actors , artists more . Mj was unoriginal artist and a stealer .
Yup. While MJ's dance moves were copies of Fred Astaire's, he still made them his own...which I forgot to put in my own comment! MJ could DANCE because he studied Astaire and became a great dancer in his OWN right! :-D
And I so forgot Astaire said that! MJ was dance...but because he studied the greatest. :-D
+littlenavybrat ok.....how? Explain what Michael Jackson did to make it his own. Please don't include moonwalk, or his kicks or spins. We know that those are his moves......well....not the moonwalk, he was taught that by Jeffrey Daniels. So explain.
+mellodee123 I'm a Fred Astaire fan and know that every dancer has been inspired by him on some level. MJ made some of Fred's moves his own by simple yet subtle changes. It's a flick of the wrist or the way he moved his feet. I like MJ. He was a very talented dancer. But he learned from Astaire and the Nicholas Brothers. It's not a dismiss against Astaire. When I write, I aim to write like Jane Austen, but while I can copy her tones, her humor, I still make it my own. MJ did the same with the dancing. He was more than a moonwalking, crotch-grabbing, tip toes standing spinner. MJ could dance and dance well. Even Astaire admired MJ's dancing.
littlenavybrat understood.
micahel jackson made it NO secret he was inspired by fred. He always say " study the great and be greater"...and he did.
No, Michael WAS great, but Fred and Gene Kelly were the greatest.
Dois mito
Fred Astaire lived on the same street as Michael when Michael was a child and would come out and show him dance steps. He was a friend to Michael.💞
I know Fred Astaire and Michael Jackson were friends and admirers of each other's work, but I had no idea how much Fred Astaire infuleneced Michael Jackson! This video is amazing. Thanks for posting it.
This was something MJ actually did to pay tribute.
I had no idea either! I thank Steve Briggs for making this great video.
Wow. I knew he loved Fred Astaire but I did not realize how great of an influence he had on Michael's work and Smooth Criminal is my favorite music video of all time! Thanks for this, it was cool!
Anybody old enough to remember the Jackson 5 TV show in the mid-70's, will remember that Michael did a Fred Astaire number in many of those shows and it was often the highlight of the show. He always admired Astaire's smooth dance style.
They were good friends. After Michael Jackson did his moonwalk on TV, Fred Astaire phoned him and said, "You really kicked ass last night." (Gene Kelly said that he and Astaire copied dance steps from Black dancers)
As a retired musician, I always tell the young guys and gals, if you want to be great at something, hang out with those that are better than you. Michael had a great mentor.
everyone knows that Michael Jackson loved Fred Astaire and the old Fred said he considered Michael the greatest dancer
That's showbiz talk!
Ho never said that
Fred Astaire is quoted saying not too long before he died, "I didn't want to leave this Earth without knowing who my descendant was. Thank you Michael!". That's pretty amazing returned admiration.
@@rashb3994 Exactly! He also said: "Oh, God! That boy moves in a very exceptional way. That’s the greatest dancer of the century".
@@aegeanmappinggo and your research, you hater, dumb as fuck. Fred himself said that Michael Jackson was the best dancer he ever saw in his lifetime. 🖕🏿🖕🏿🖕🏿
Michael Jackson was a great entertainer.
Gene Kelly,Fred Astaire were great dancers.
None of them were better than each other.
They were the all the best of their era.
Wow....so many parallels, Michael really looked up to Fred....such an amazing thing to discover!
Fred was so ahead of his time that if you just put current music over his dances it seems it was made yesterday, crazy!
Wow! I know he loved Fred Astaire but I didn't know he got so much from him. That was amazing. But Michael took it to another level. Both men were absolutely brilliant. I love both of them as well as Gene Kelly. He was also incredible. But the King of Pop was the greatest. Period!!! Thanks for the video. Well done
Barry Morgan I agree 👌🏼
I will not even bother to compare. Both Michael and Astaire were geniuses in their own right....You can see the heavy Astaire influences in Michael's performances. It makes sense, Astaire was one of Michael's idols.
Vincent Hannah Exactly. Micheal made it no secret. It was a compliment to Astaire, and he took it as such. They both admired and greatly respected each other. They both were extremely talented in their own right.
+Kathryn Kerbs im 71 and seen them all micheal will never be copied its imposible,no one can come close to him ever
+Kathryn Kerbs do you know what is the name of their movements?
Vincent Hannah I saw Fred Astaire in an interview many years ago. He had this to say about Michael Jackson .... "That kid can dance! "
they were genius and a great great loss
definitely proves the point that Michael admired Fred.
Terrific video...Michael loved Fred...he required that his dancers watch all of Fred's movies with him....he internalized the moves...all of us are fortunate to be able to watch them both. Two geniuses of dance!
THE INTRODUCTION WITH FRED AND Michael IS DANGEROUS ...
I've always loved the old school dancers: Fred Astaire, Sammy Davis, The Nicholas brothers, Bill Robinson, et al...AND old black & white movies of the 1940s and 50s but I have to say that Michael's Smooth Criminal is a tour de force to Astaire's 1953 "The Band Wagon". Just how much of it was an inspiration for Michael I don't know but watching the clips from both side by side is truly amazing. Michael clearly earned the rank of Master Of His Craft along side Fred Astaire and all the other great male dancers!
This is an extremely well-conceived video. I had never noticed before that Michael Jackson did an homage in his Smooth Criminal performances to Fred Astaire's criminal dance scene from The Bandwagon.
Two of our greatest national treasures.
Awesome!! I've always been a big Fred Astaire fan (have seen all of his musicals), and I am an MJ fan(atic).lol So great to see these two icons together. They really loved and respected each other's talent. Also glad that the some of the younger generation has been introduced to the suave, smooth, and debonair Mr. Astaire.
Brilliant. I LOVE these videos that show MJ's roots and influences all the way back to Baily, Sublette, et al. He wasn't called the King for no reason. He create his own brilliant magic from studying all the greats.
YES, absolutely!!! Michael was inspired and influenced BY people from earlier generations, such as Fred Astaire. But, unlike many popular so-called "artists" today, Michael DIDN'T outright "copycat" off of those who inspired him (like today's "artists," and "Pop" stars have tried - who ARE trying as HARD as possible - to do with HIM). Instead, he took what he learned from his influences, and used that to establish an identity of his OWN.
He wasn't trying to become the "new," or the "next," version of anyone who inspired him; He was always ORIGINAL, he was always HIMSELF. As he wrote, at one time, he wanted to "study the greats....and then become greater." This Video PROVES just how true that is.
(continued)....I would like to ask you, "Who are 'Bailey' and 'Sublette' "? I want to know.
Thank you for sharing this with us. Two legends in their own lifetime, this is my favourite MJ routine.
Maisie Parrish Me Too!!
Super merci j'adore thank you verry good c'est cool...!!!!🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷👍👍👍👍
Absolutely fabulous, Thankyou for this 😊😊
Amazing integration with the various videos. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent point. Super-well done. Had no clue, previously.
Totally awesome. Now I know where Michael got some of his ideas from.
Awesome!.. Amazing!
I like this.. interesting and entertaining.. mysterious..edge of the seat scenes.. great job!🎶🎶🎶
Very good video ! I liked both Fred Astaire and Michael Jackson. Thank you for sharing.
Michael learns from, and brings the knowledge of Fred Astaire on a higher level. We call that progress!
I'm a massive MJ fan but out of respect for the great Astaire, it should be titled The Master and His Student.
But Fred Astaire was just one of MJ’s inspirations. MJ was all the masters in one, & he surpassed them all
R.I.P
Fred Astaire & Micheal Jackson
Probably one of the greatest performers that ever lived
Michael Jackson, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Yves Montand, Bob Fosse, James Brown... quels grands danseurs !
I want to add Cab Calloway to that list. Probably the first to moonwalk and amazing classical entertainer.
Yves Montand ? Nah..
Pinklaeti C'est vrai
I agree, but you've forgotten Buddy Ebsen. He was awesome!!
MuhRING! Add to that Astaires influences Bo Jangles and a man named Sublett.
Michael Jackson / Fred Astaire / Cyd Charisse ; the Master & his Teacher
Thank you
STRAIGHT BRILLIANCE FROM BOTH AMAZING MEN,RIP MICHAEL JACKSON AND FRED ASTAIRE 🙏🏾
And Cyd Charisse!
Fred Astaire and Michael Jackson were amazing dancers. Both paved the way for dancers today.
Michael studied the best. Fred Astaire gave Michael many compliments.
Terrific, you've edited brilliantly.

Doga Doga you are pathetic!
indimenticabile Michael Jackson!
indimenticabile Fred Astaire! )
Michael Jackson all the way .
Brilliantly created! Thanks, Steve Briggs :-)
Holy cow. Why is it that so many exchanges on BooTube degenerate into racist slurs.
There is no comparing these two giants - both were masters of their trade, both perfectionists, both innovators in their own ways.
Michael Jackson wrote some of the most popular music in history, and was a phenomenal dancer who openly acknowledged his influences - he didn't plagiarise, he offered tribute in his own wonderful interpretations.
Fred was a stickler for detail, and if you watch many of his early routines (especially in the RKO movies with the sublime Ginger Rogers) the dances were filmed in one take. Poor Ginger used to say that after some exacting days on set with Fred her shoes would be full of blood.
So please, (and I'm not belittling anyone who has suffered the disgusting indignity of racism at all from any direction), enough of the black/white nonsense. Let's just appreciate these two remarkable people for what they were: incredibly talented and entertaining human beings whose like we shall probably never see again.
"""Ηoly cow. Why is it that so many exchanges on BooTube degenerate into racist slurs."""
Because RUclips is open and unfitlered, and allows you to see everything that people in society really believe, including that. Might not be always nice, but sure is enlightening and uncencored view of what's around.
I envy them all their amazing entertaining talents.
When I think Michael Jackson I think of how successful he was, not only that but this man had skills. I truly understand his artistry and the inspiration behind it all!
This is incredible!
Holy crap - this is awesome. THANKS FOR THIS!
Caroline Wolter Hall oicarolina
Michael, you are admirable
Astaire, you're Admiral ! Tu es trop bon !!

elvis stole black music
he was an excellent student. he added his personal touches and made it even better.
Fantastic - thank you.
They had huge respect for each other. Michael dedicated his book to Fred Astaire and I think Fred's quote was "I didn’t want to leave this world without knowing who my descendant was. Thank you Michael!"
This is incredible. You have a good eye. Editing is excellent. The video is superbly entertaining. We of the Michael Jackson generation should watch more of these Fred Astaire-era dances. They are impressive.
Great job Steve!! Amazing video, I love it!
Wow! I knew MJ was influenced by Fred Astaire, but had never seen them compared like that. Thanks for posting
Michael understood the assignment and did it well!!!
Very cool. Love it. Thought Mike's movements looked familiar. Both of them extremely talented dancers. Major influences
Fred Astaire was a G lol. He was tooooo kool in his dance moves. Never would have guessed what all the hoop la was about...
the 2 best dancers I've ever seen
I won't compare them. Love watching both of them!!
Great work on this Steve. Wish I had found it 7 years ago! :)
Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Michael Jackson.
And the legend Cyd Charisse
Phenomenal pair of legs. She was a natural born dancer, like the rest. ~ Intergalactic citizen ;-)
Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Michael Jackson... for me.
Julianna Anda n
He got inspired and took it to the next level, all the artist from painting to cinema do references to the artist that inspires them....it is how it works. Many pelple did the same with MJ later on.
So well done! Thank you
Nobody can move like mike
What are you talking about? I don't think Mike is moving at all these days
Chris brown can in my humble opinion Chris brown is better dancer than mj overall and I'm a big mj fan saying this just like mj was a better dancer than most of the people he looked up to like James brown etc.
Fred Astaire called MJ the greatest dancer of the century.
This is my absolute favorite video EVER ❤ Fred Astaire ❤
Michael Jackson and Fred Astaire are both wonderful dancers!! I really loved seeing Fred's Dance moves and seeing how mj incorporated it into his own dance moves :) MJ talked about how much Fred inspired him in his book "moonwalk".
The difference is that fred made the women look great. Michael usually didn't have a partner. Astaire was super
Jodene Carlyle
Cyd Charisse was a better dancer than both Gene and Fred.
yup,cyd was a classical dancer to start with. If you get a chance see "One alone"This is a dance story,in itself. about rejection.
NAOMI CAMPBELL in "Keep It In The Closet" and Tatiyana Thumpson in "The Way You Make Me Feel" were fan or super models the world over when MJ made those videos. But none bigger than Naomi.
I have two major complaints about this video. It needs to be much longer (Great job!--I want to see more, more, more...) and there needs to be more of them. How often do contemporary stars stand on the shoulders of artists from yesteryear?

elvis stole black music
Leila Békélé If Elvis stole black music he should have been much much better than he was.
MJ was the greatest of them all.... he can enhanced all the dance steps to perfection and became his own 🫡👏💪👑
Two of my favorites. Michael was a genius in his own right, but knew who came before him.
The Band Wagon is the best musical ever made. Michael Jackson was a skillful dancer but he cannot match the glorious talent of Fred Astaire.
Oh ja; Michael Jackson - schade dieses traurige Ende!
Katja Schumann
Yes his life was very sad.
............und er hat so viel Gutes getan!
They were both awesome in their own time! Two of the all time greatest dancers ever! No one has come along since that can match their talents in my opinion.
Katja Schumann
His life was very sad but I think he found great happiness with his three children :-)
Sen-sa-cio-nal!....
Dance talent from both is appreciated and watched with awe. Thank you.
Thank you for highlighting the creativity these two Great talents shared.
I almost think Michael is better than Fred Astaire. Maybe just more sensual and unique.
ann landers Take that back.... Fred Astaire was as smooth as they come, smoother than the criminal king of pop himself. And he didn't grab his crotch... MJ is a genius but Fred is the best
Je ne crois pas !!!
Nathalie Nowostawski Je suis correct. Il n'y a aucune raison pour que vous n'êtes pas d'accor... BAM!
+Michael Jackson Slightly?????? When Michael Jackson himself said he was heavily influenced by him?????? Boi.....STOP!!!!

Excellent! I watched the old classic movies just as Michael did! Love them! Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse was awesome to watch! RIP great ones!
I love the slowly creeping away walk… this video is fantastic!! ❤️
There is greatness and a rich tradition here. Loved it.
Brilliantly, Fantastically Wonderful - Huge Kudos & a Million THANKS
That whole section from Band Waggon remains a constant joy.
Excellent! To see over and over and never get tired. Thanks!
i adore that video .Fred and Michael are just gorgeous
What a great video! ThanXX. I admire both Dancing Men, Michael was truly inspired by Fred. Both Smoothies.
Steve , you ROCK !! What an unbelievable way to present Michael's influences ! Very good , elegant , classy ! LYM , Nora.
thank you so much for the video... Michael spoke highly of Fred and I know they loved each other as friends.. they were both great dancers and actors.. I miss them both
can't praise this high enough... a very well done
Brilliant! Never knew Fred Astaire was an inspiration for Michael. love seeing the two videos intertwined
Fred and Michel, so good...! thanks guys.
These are two classy dancers who don't get more professional. They are both as good as it gets. Michael had such good taste to be influenced by Fred Astare, a brilliant dancer taking some of his work and making it his own. I love the comparisons here and I just love this video. It's so good to see Michael's wide range of dance styles. thanks so much for sharing.
I would have loved to see FA and MJ dance together
and the fact that they did know each other makes it even more amazing
Wonderful Thank you for this. All my favourites
Extremely well done and carefully thought out!
i know that fred astaire was 1 of michael's inspirations and fred astaire liked it andcalled michael the day he did the moonwalk for the first time and complimented him. he told him he could call himself 1 of the best dancers of the world simular with himself and gene kelly which called him the day after and complimented him too with his moonwalk. we will never forget people like them. they influanced the whole world with their dancestyle
Thanks for your wonderful collaboration!
loved it...great job..thanks for sharing...
Fantastic; brilliant study. So sad these amazing performers are no longer with us!
It would be so epic being able to see Cyd Charisee and Michael Jackson dance together to this song. I can picture him watching "Band Wagon" for the first time. Fred was his super hero.
What a great video. It is clear that a LOT of thought and research went into what we see and enjoy here. Thanks a bunch for the effort and the pleasure I got when I watched. People can say what they want and have their opinions and I'll keep my opinion to myself but one thing cannot be denied; MJ was an artist.
Grace and beauty plus undeniable talent. I love his.
My passion for dancing is all here. Thank you for producing this awesome musical video,
Wonderful,,,,,,,first class, loved it....
Steve, this compilation video is fabulous!! My mother was a dancer and loved Cyd Charisse......and I loved Fred Astaire and Michael Jackson. So thank you so much for this!!
wow great video, thx for posting this... nice to see michael and fred in one clip... each of them great dancers in their own generation
