If there was not a first, there would not be something else for someone else to build on and perfect it (i.e. Michael Jackson). SO RELAX! No one's taking anything away from the late great Michael Jackson. Nor should anyone take anything away from what the late great Billy Bailey did. Both can be celebrated respectively.

its been called "the buzz" then "backslide" and finally "moonwalk" and yes been there since 40's or may be earlier but really came alive with MJ , no one had ever done it as smooth and as cool as him...
Like many have already said, this is the backslide. There's a difference in illusion between the two, this move here doesn't carry the same illusion Michael does with his moonwalk. The moonwalk is simply a much perfected version of the backslide, and to those that are saying Michael stole or copied this move, he never said he created it. In fact it's been stated before that he learned it from outside sources, both by him and other people.
To anyone saying MJ invented the moonwalk: he did NOT. He grew up watching these performances and made it his own. Literally anyone can moonwalk. But MJ stood out because of his overall excellence.
Lately,, I learned that Jeffrey wasn't the first....some guy who used to do Tap Dance, then would "slide back". Sorry, I can't remember his name. Anyway, he deserves all the credit!!! "There is nothing new under The Sun". As the saying goes.
Not better than anyone else... Turbo from the movie "Breaking" use to glide even better than Michael. MJ learned it from him and his partner Poppin' Taco in the 80s. Taco was even in the Smooth Criminal video.

I love videos like this that I’m able to look back in to history and see how things came to be. Am I the only one who gets mind blown by things like this? Here I am 23 in 2018 and I feel like everything that humans have to offer has already been done. Now we’re stuck with Lil Pump.
Man, I also love to find out very good things existed in past times. But humans are far from doing everything there is to be done. Take the upcoming Transitioning Exoplanet Survey Satellite, for example. It is expected to discover a lot of potentially habitable planets beyond the solar system. Add to that some promising spaceship technologies in development such as the Star Chip which is a nano space probe propelled by light sail principle,. If successfully completed, it could reach the nearest earth-like exoplanet - Proxima b in Alpha Centauri system - in 20 years of travel time, and send back to us the first images of an earth-like exoplanet (the data would take another 4 years to reach back to earth). Of course, it all could turn out to only become real in a future beyond our lifetime. But the knowledge about the universe is continuously expanding, and so is technology, and we can be as excited about the future as we are about the past :)
Fernando, you obviously read some stuff but haven't did any research. These sails you speak of work, theoretically. In practice, once you get further and further from our sun there are less and less photons reaching the sail. It is impossible to reach the nearest star that way. Unless we can somehow make a controlled wormhole to an exoplanet like earth, we won't get there within the next 500 years.
Diepvries11 actually, it would "involve a multi-kilometer phased array of beam-steerable lasers with a combined coherent power output of up to 100 GW" (earth-based). Theoretically, it would be enough to accelerate the fleet of nano probes to 30% of the speed of light. I don't know if it would need 500 years to work but I agree that our generation may not live to see it.
Jeff Daniels (Shalamar) is credited with creating the moon walk, first aired on BBCs Top of the Pops in 1982. The story goes, he taught it to Michael J. The real first moonwalk was performed by dancer Bill Bailey, first seen at the Apollo Theatre, NY in 1955.
You guys are funny. Michael didnt create the moonwalk. He was taught it, He just blew it up and made it famous. Quit hating and saying he stole it smh. He has said many times that he watches old films and videos of people dancing and thats where he gets his inspiration, to learn and to perfect.

Michael never claimed to have made up or created the Moon Walk. He simply danced and shared it with us. So those upset just sit down & untie your draws...This one was not the first either. It was performed in an old movie of which the name escapes me now. But it was performed by an African American gentleman in that movie as well.
Michael Jackson and Shalamar did their homework! Do you ever wonder where some of the artists, authors, writers, etc. go and follow their mentors, or those they look up to? This is where the research comes in to play! This is where I firmly believe classic and history will never leave us and it is for us to do our research and homework to give honor to our late great legends who paved the way for us to keep them alive for generations to come to remember. ~ Amen.

Michael never claimed the Moonwalk as his. He had learn it like every one who wanted to do it :-) He always publicly said he learned it from the "kids on the streets" HOWEVER no one MoonWalked like him. I've no doubt he watched Bill Bailey like he did with anyone who performed at the Apollo. Michael is the KING
Hmm!....where are you from? Although Michael exposed the so-called "moonwalk" to the masses, he was in no way the best! Smooth but not the best. He explains that! There were quite a few "poppers "(street dancers) who had perfected the backslide! I realize you are not from the Cali streets therefore relying soley on Google for your information!
@@a.c.6475 I'm from Dublin. We don't have many poppers over here :-) I lived in Boston for 16 yrs and Phoenix for 3yrs. You are talking to a MJ fan and we think Michael is the best dancer and singer on the face of the earth and to persuade us otherwise is a loosing battle :-) Good try though
@@niallbyrne6474 Hold on there potna!....I didn't say M.J. was not a great entertainer, I too am a "rabid" Jackson Five fan! But you see....I grew up in San Diego where I and many others were poppers back in late 70's to mid 80's! I have witnessed first hand the buttery-smooth backsliding style of my fellow dancers! I cannot help if you sir have not seen otherwise, I have!

That was great to watch and learn the earliest recorded moonwalk. And Mr. Bailley was top notch.

Wow, that really was the first moonwalk!
noup, sorry was a mexican dancer called "resortes", him was dancer on 50's dance 1000 times much better, if you wanna see search " resortes michael jackson"...

I will check it out.
Erick erick g
Alright, I watched a video with Resortes, he was really, really great.
Erick erick g There were so many before resortes who did the moonwalk its not even funny. I'm talkin 40s, 30s, early 1900s. Even this example is before resortes who did it in 1959. This video is from 1955. Although, I do give resortes credit for doing it really well.
Everyone knows Michael Jackson didn't create it. He perfected it to the point nobody did it better than him & he took it to a whole other level
David Ortiz actually everyone doesn’t know that. 😂

Incredible! Not just the moonwalk, but he does a kind of "flip" up motion with the toe that looks like an airplane taking off, while at the same time, maintaining footwork with the other foot. He made it look easy!

I bet ants use to fear this man.
This was great. Damn I wish it was longer, feels way too short. I was feeling the pump and then he throws a bucket of ice cold water at me when he instantly leaves the stage. Love it!
I think he didn't even realize what a great shit he invented
your comment is without a doubt accurate
Tap dancing is not as easy as it looks.
GREAT PERFORMANCE !!
His sound was so clear and on point. I love tap!!
The sounds you hear is as a result of someone drumming. He was just merely dance and the drum stick sound
The caption never said Billy Bailey did it the best. It simply pointed out that he was the first person recorded doing it.
🗣️ Say it louder for the "MJ stole it" buffons.
Amazing. Never heard of Bill Bailey and that's clearly the moonwalk. Great video
Never heard of Bill Bailey?!?! .....All you had to do was click your heels together 3 times and say "won't you please come home, won't you please come home, won't you please come home"
Reminds of my years in Hoover Elementary in Oakland, CA. I remember we had a school janitor that wore tap shoes and would perform to us. Those were some good years.
its been called "the buzz" then "backslide" and finally "moonwalk" and yes been there since 40's or may be earlier but really came alive with MJ , no one had ever done it as smooth and as cool as him...
MJ got it from David Bowie, after attending one of his 'Diamond Dogs' shows. Bowie was from a background in mime, which is where he got it.
@@chopsueykungfu i heard it was from james brown
Actually he learned it from a guy named Jeffrey Daniels. Look it up.
He learned it from me we used to go to school together in 2010
Awesome! There are no performers like him left any more.
I mean Michael never said he created the moonwalk. He just made it famous. Michael said himself that he got the moonwalk from some kids off the street

Its kinda like mj didnt invent the dunk ,but he perfected it ,so goes mj with the moonwalk😉
From what I have seen Michael Jackson simply just perfected the moonwalk and did it better than anyone else ever did.
@Mariebrunette784 Hello, I'm doing good thanks. How are you doing?
Not better than anyone else... Turbo from the movie "Breaking" use to glide even better than Michael. MJ learned it from him and his partner Poppin' Taco in the 80s. Taco was even in the Smooth Criminal video.
There is a coinsidence , the first moonwalk was in apollo theatre and 13 years later Neil Armstrong went to moon in Apollo spacecraft
didnt happen bro 👍
The first "moonwalk" was at the Apollo, and the first ACTUAL moon walk was the APOLLO 11 mission. Interesting coincidence.

@the zodiac guru He didn't "copy" anyone. Jeffrey Daniel personally taught Michael how to moonwalk and he ended up practicing it so much he did it better than the pioneers.
Yes but Michael’s was a little bit better because his was straight and Bill’s was going a bit crooked and sideways.
I agree
I love videos like this that I’m able to look back in to history and see how things came to be. Am I the only one who gets mind blown by things like this? Here I am 23 in 2018 and I feel like everything that humans have to offer has already been done. Now we’re stuck with Lil Pump.
Ah yes. You are young and listen to old shit. You are the best.
Travon Chappell omg michale copywriter
Michael version is amazing but original has its unshakable respect!
Like what Michael said, you learn from the old and make it greater! Brilliant Bill is outstanding
This video was made 10 years ago and I still see fresh comments in the comment section
The long lost art of tap dancing. Wonderful!
You guys are funny. Michael didnt create the moonwalk. He was taught it, He just blew it up and made it famous. Quit hating and saying he stole it smh. He has said many times that he watches old films and videos of people dancing and thats where he gets his inspiration, to learn and to perfect.
Briessa Cisneros I never heard him give credit to the man either he let everybody believe he did this wow the only thing Michael did that was his own flat was put on lipstick and mascara
Thomas Norton jermaine said that growing up they didnt think that move was very special because thats what they saw all the time. Im sure at the time they didnt even know exactly where it came from.
Briessa Cisneros well if Jermaine said it it's got to be true by the way who the fuck is Jermaine
Thomas Norton jermaine jackson, his brother. Sad that i had to tell you.
Thomas Norton nope. Neither of them are. There is another thing you can learn today yay! There is actually this video i could recommend if you would like. Its all up to you if you watch it or not. But michael jackson was NOT a pedophile.
First moonwalk or not, this guy has amazing dancing skills!
he created it but michael jackson perfected that shit
Cab Calloway was doing that back in the 30's way before Bailey in 1955. They called it the buzz.
It was perfected before Michael Jackson in the late 70's. Check out the history
Michael Jackson copied that shit

james hayden True. Teach the youngin's. And let me add to this lesson. The BEST MOONWALK EVER DONE, [I hate to hurt folks feelings] was not by Michael Jackson, but Basil Fearrington, the bass player from MTUME. He glided like a puck on an air hockey machine ... UNBELIEVABLE !
BACK TO THE FUTURE! "You're not ready for this but ur kids will"! That's what I felt watching this
Michael never claimed to have made up or created the Moon Walk. He simply danced and shared it with us. So those upset just sit down & untie your draws...This one was not the first either. It was performed in an old movie of which the name escapes me now. But it was performed by an African American gentleman in that movie as well.
Not sure how many are upset about him “stealing” anything, and I agree it’s very inaccurate to say so. He sure did master it though!
The Cabin in the Sky is the movie I think you are talking about. It was 1943 and the guy that did it.... Bill Bailey.
~ Amen.
