Originally uploaded on my 1st channel in March 2008, then on my 2nd one on April 21, 2008, and also on June 28, 2009 (HQ version). This was the first in my MJ trilogy videos, which I made hoping that MJ would see it and just smile. It had got more than 2 million views in total until my former channel got deleted on December 8, 2010. My 3rd channel got deleted again in July 2013, so here's a re-upload. The following is the original description I wrote for the video.

I love both Astaire and Michael Jackson. I want young people to know Astaire stuff, that is why I made this. The video features scenes from the Girl Hunt ballet in The Band Wagon (1953) starring Astaire and Cyd Charisse (those supreme legs!! The most perfect body a woman could have. So sensual, so elegant), to which MJ gave homage in his Smooth Criminal vid (also in a performance of Get Happy on the Jacksons show in the 70s as well as You Rock My World in 2001), and, as an intro, a sequence from Daddy Long Legs (1955) featuring Leslie Caron (in motion pictures, you mustn't put a coin into a jukebox in an ordinary way!).
My initial idea was using also Yolanda And The Thief (1945) where Astaire appeared with the same costume, a white suit, hat and a blue shirt, but I eventually omitted it.
Michael Kidd worked with Janet in the Alright vid in 1990, featuring Cyd Charisse (in the red dress!), the Nicholas Brothers and Cab Calloway.

Smooth Criminal is actually a beautiful tribute to Fred and his family. Fred died the year before the music video premiered on MTV, and it connected a whole new generation with him and his iconic movies like Band Wagon.

Gregory Hines once said in an interview that if they ever made a movie about the Nicholas Brothers, the dance routines would have to be done with CGI, because nobody could recreate them.

When I was a kid, I thought Michael Jackson just invented all this stuff. But what he really did was take Bob Fosse, West Side Story, and other old musicals like this one, and then he RE-invented them with a massive modern update. Which is what a lot of great artists do.
Mike did a lot of things, not just smooth criminal. What about the Thriller video....did anyone else before him did something like that, for example!?! Micheal was also an inovator not just someone who took stuff from other Entertainers!!! Don't forget that!! ;-)
@@sventrogrlic6370 Well, the Thriller video was clearly an homage to old thriller movies. That's what the song is about, too. But I mean no disrespect. All artists are inspired by somebody, and the great ones all just use their inspirations as a jumping off point to add something original. Michael Jackson was inspired by James Brown, Sly Stone, Diana Ross, Fred Astaire, Stevie Wonder, Bob Fosse, old musicals, Peter Pan, breakdancing, Sammy Davis Jr., Marvin Gaye, and I'm sure lots more. Nobody had ever mixed all that stuff together before. And then he added his own unique thing to it that held it all together. Nobody ever thought of dancing zombies, for example.

@@kathleenmaclachlan1541 I disagree. Michael Jackson was a guy with serious issues for sure. And he was inspired by musicals, and many other things. But he put his own unique spin on it.
@@sventrogrlic6370 It takes immense talent and utmost creativity to take classics and do what MJ did with them. He was heavily influenced by a lot but nothing he did was taking anything from anyone. He didn't invent much of it, but I think that's even crazier and shows how much talent he truly had. He didn't need to be the first to do it but watching Fred Astaire and then Michael is insane cause no other artist would've ever thought to do what he did and certainly not to that level of height he elevated it too. He raised the bar and then broke the bar lol if more artists did this we'd have some incredible music right now. So don't feel defensive if others say he's not "original" cause it's simply not true. The man bled talent and creativity, he is the BEST and it's fun and amazing to see the inspiration for smooth criminal and everything else he made, but watching Smooth Criminal and Thriller etc is unlike anything else. Masterpieces.

Fun fact, Michael Jackson was a HUGE FAN of Fred Astaire! That's why Smooth Criminal was so reminiscent of some of Fred Astaire movies like The Band Wagon and Daddy Long Legs. I watched that movie when I was kid and when I saw Moonwalker for the first time, all I could think about how cool the dances resembled the movie The Band Wagon. I found out later on in a Michael Jackson interview that he was a fan of Fred Astaire!

Janet had Cyd Cherish in her video for “Alright”. That video gave so much old Hollywood musicals. I knew they must have grown up watching the same movies my siblings and I watched growing up in the 80’s. My dad was a smooth dancer, a Jamaican Fred Astaire if you will. Who loved Sinatra, and Perry Cuomo. Smooth Criminal is my favorite Michael video along with Janet’s “Alright”.

I think Fred had some influence but I believe Bob Fosse was a bigger influence. Check out his moves. MJs moves are identical.

Fred Astaire called Michael Jackson after an awards ceremony and told him he was a fan of MJ and was the best dancer. Of course Michele was just as much a fan of Fred, as the rest of the world and repaid the compliment. It goes something like that. I loved this. Very entertaining.
It was after the Motown 25 performance.
Fred Astaire and James Brown were two of Michael's favorite dancers. He was inspired by both of them.

I remember that show, it was the Motown 20th anniversary back the 80's. The next day Fred came out and praise Michael Jackson for his performance. It was like Fred he was passing the torch to Michael because after that Michael career took off and he never looked back! Fred died soon after that.

OMG!! I never knew Smooth Criminal was based on this movie! This was the most amazing music video I’ve ever seen in my life!!!
I read that the original direction of the Smooth Criminal music video with going to be a western aka Cowboys and stuff but Michael Jackson went to a showing of one of The Godfather movies and he became inspired by it and decided to do a gangster prohibition era music video but according to a lot of the comments, and I didn't know this myself, Michael was apparently a big fan of Fred Astaire. And I can see a decent amount of similar dance moves in both these movies in this put together clip here on YT as well as the Smooth Criminal music video.

@Karen B, those two black brothers from the past created all the great dancers since then. No one has ever surpassed them either. But did you know the Nicolas Brothers stole that dance and there is footage of others doing what they did on film. Because of the age of the footage there is no way of knowing who was better than the Nicholas Brothers.

No, Ican't remember the proper spelling of her last name either (I WASN'T looking at the spelling), but this woman danced (no, she simply had to breathe) me into my Manhood at an extremely young age (ahh yes, her movies were my raison D'etre!).
Research the artist PAN HERMES (who was always included in Fred's movie credits for Choreography, and laid out his steps, dancing together as a couple, in the closed stage). With everything paced precisely, then the actress was walked through her paces. That's how great these artists were, and decades later, we still marvel at their craft!
Y'know, I completely forgot this scene and movie; decades later I saw Jackson's cover, but kept saying, this looks familiar. Hmmm.

Amazing that this never showed up before now. That was quite something. MJ was massively influenced by a whole range of things and could thing them all together and make them extra special - that was his talent. Imagine if they could've done something together!

My point I made in an early reply to someone else. Today you don't create, you just "borrow" from long forgotten works of arts in the PUBLIC DOMAIN of an older generation.
The "Lounge music" of another era helps to sell today's commercial products (recall the Chihuahua in the TACO BELL commercial, with the background music of the late George Shering (acquaintance of my late mother).
I was surprised to hear the music I grew up with (Caribbean Love Song) being used to push fast food. At least a new generation WILL GET to savor the forgotten artistry of the elders, whom they dismissed as a bunch of old geezers, with their antiquated ways (not to worry, these kids' turn "at bat" is coming sooner than expected)!

My all time favorite quote about Fred? Probably from Mikhail Baryshnikov: "I have been asked how dancers feel about Fred Astaire. It is no secret. We hate him." He added he was reminded of a quote by Ilie Nastase when asked about tennis legend Bjorn Bjorg: "We are playing tennis. He is playing something else." Fred Astaire...greatest performer of all time. After all the years of being an MJ fan and growing up with his music I never knew the similarities. I mean I knew MJ loved Fred Astaire but Michael being Michael done a lovely tribute to Fred without overshadowing him. Such the genius of Mike. Do you live in the UK? Fred and his sister performed there. They were LOVED there. Becoming friends with the Prince, I mean not just acquaintances. They were close friends. He went to EVERY performance.

Jackson was 30, when he performed "Smooth Criminal". Astaire was 54, when he danced this choreography in a Minelli's movie. Thumbs up for Cyd Charisse too.

Don't mean to hog this comment area but I felt like I had to chime back in and say that as a child there were only three channels on the television and most of the time this type of thing was showing. back then wasn't very interested as time went on became very well acquainted with the likes of the old show business Stars as an adult it's become one of my passions watching and observing the mannerism of such greats. I just wanted to say that is a 60 year old man it makes me most pleased to see the younger generations getting into the old film stock. The sheer fact that they have bought it together with modern music just makes it all the sweeter, props you guys you've done very well. old folks are watching and quite frankly enjoy your creations.

Fred Astaire & Cyd Charisse in “THE BAND WAGON” (1953). Directed by Vincent Minnelli (yes, Liza’s dad). This dance sequence was called “The Girl Hunt”. The girl in the opening of this video is Leslie Caron. Michael Jackson repeatedly payed homage to Astaire and other great dancers of years past.
