That cannot be the entrance, since two men cannot stand side by side. Good job getting the digger and going from the other side instead. Love your humor, Michael. Billy's yard is going to be a mess, but I bet he is chomping at the bit to find it as much as you are. So glad you are back, Michael. 🧡
While this is exciting to see, PLEASE be careful when it comes to tunnels. Especially ancient ones! You have no idea if it is on the brink of collapse or not. Please be safe, Michael!
I'm sitting on a bench, in a bike park, in Tucson, Az. It is about eighty degrees...fixed bike tube, enjoying the warmth of the five o clock bench..it holds the accumulated days sunshine...cheering on my phone cam...and happy to be part of your day...
Tunneling adventures continue ! Interesting for the content to add to the Chateau's history. Some Chateaus had underground tunnels to move people safely to and from or supplies to and from. Important to survival and could mean Marie Antoinette, King Louis, etc types may have lived longer due to these. Wine cellers often extended from the main building to protect from the weather outside. COOL!
And why exactly was it a positive for the Marie Antoinette, King Louie etc types to live longer? Those Elites treated the common people like absolute crap.
To make the digging easier, you might want to use a shop-vacuum with a dirt-trap. You would basically be vacuuming the loose soil away and the dirt-trap can be up on the ground and easy to empty out the spoils. I dug out an old well at my grand-parents house like this. It worked like a charm and saved my back. Keep doing what you do. I love watching your content. It reminds me of the times as a little boy. Can't wait to see what you do for hydropower with the lake.
It’s terrific that there’s always mysterious tunnels, secret doors, wells, etc around chateaus it really adds to the Magic of it all. Look forward to your discovery Michael.
Archeology and Architecture!! Can't be much better except for the addition of chateau de la Basmaignee and her grounds illuminated by the setting sun!!! Brings a little gasp of sheer joy and a huge sigh in response to breathtaking beauty!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰 TY Basmaignee ❤❤❤
What fun is it owning a Chateau if you can't find a secret tunnel! How exciting - thanks for taking us along Michael, can't wait to see where this goes!
Great Phil impression! You should definitely sieve through all the earth spoils, not just to get the bits of glass out but just in case there are any little treasures or bits of interesting history of the Chateau.
That looks like a puisard, I have one in my back garden in Normandie, it's like a sink hole for draining off excess water, they're pretty common when you live in the country side and you're not hooked up to a sewage system. So mine captures water from the gutters, the grease tank (bac à graisse) and the septic tank drain off, yours looks redundant as it's been cut off by the wall. The square opening in the round lid is also a givaway, it's called a "regard" literally a" look",so you can keep an eye on the water levels in there. Usualy apuisard is not a well, in a puisard the used waters will drain away into the soil to be filtered, whereas a well taps into fresh water from the water table.
It's great to see you uploading again, Michael! This got me to thinking about a gravedigger's tool here in the States. It's a long thin rod with a handle. They use them to locate the exact placement of a grave so they don't accidentally hit one. It may be a useful tool for your project depending on how rocky your soil is. Can't wait to see how this develops!
Love it! The dogs looked envious of you digging down there. Be careful though - - your eyes becoming more sensitive to the sun is a sure sign that you could be slowly turning into a badger. 🦡 🥰
Always love your content and especially appreciate your B-roll material, you do such a good job with it and with the music to go along with it, it gives us as viewers a feeling we are right there with you. I know it's a lot of work, and the quality of your videos reflects that! Thanks for all your hard work. So lovely to be with you on this grand adventure.
As an American who has seen every. single. episode. of Time Team, that was a spot-on impression of Phil! Love it Michael! I laughed so hard! 🤣Keep up the great work!
I'm so glad you are back, Michael. I'm glad to see Florian as well. How are things at your cottage? Please take us there when you can. I don't think I ever saw the upstairs after it was finished. Take care. We love you lots.
Very exciting but please be safe. Those tunnels worry me about potential collapse, but the mystery is very intriguing. I’m so happy you’re back, Michael. You are the reason I started watching your brother, sister, Mo and other chateau owners. Can’t wait for your next video. xx
There are 3 ways this can go: • It used to be a long secret tunnel; • It used to be a poop hole for an outhouse (looking forward to this reveal) • Part of water management or something and nothing intetesting.
LOL the best Phil Harris impersonation ever! I actually thought, when you first started digging in the yard, that you needed to put a tarp down for spoils so you don't wreck the grass, like they do on Time Team LOL!
Thank you Michael. I was about to start my day when the notification alerted me to your vlog. So, of course I immediately stopped what I was doing and watched you digging and digging and digging.
Field archaeologist here. Love the Time Team bit! You make a decent Phil! First impression: a well goes straight down, no channels lead off. A tunnel meant for human activity requires stairs. In this tunnel, stairs would be directly under the brick vault so it wouldn't collapse on people where the soil depth was shallow. Tunnels could then carry on either just through dirt or with a brick or stone ceiling and walls. To further extend this theory, I suggest digging down below the vaulted ceiling at least 2 meters to looks for stairs. Third option: Cistern. These are generally going to have an access point big enough for a person. However, the walls and ceiling would be brick or stone lined and plastered. Make sure the stone walls and ceiling do not carry on, and this option can be ruled out. To be honest, I hadn't considered your theory of a drainage tunnel - but that is absolutely possible. They would also probably have needed it wide enough for a man to enter to clean it out. Again, I would look for stairs. Very excited to see what happens in the next episode!
Excellent impression of Phil from Time Team! You could see where lots of things are disturbed if you did remote sensing. You could get a LiDAR for your drones to see what's going on in the forest too. Big mess, lots of work, excellent discovery fun. Just keep the holes covered so dogs, horses and children don't fall in! 🌷
I just love your energy and enthusiasm Michael 💕 Your a right Phil Harding 😂 with the same sparkle in your eyes when you’re on a digging adventure. Can’t wait to see what you unearth!
I am admiring your adventurous spirit! I doubt I would be brave enough to go into the well! You are the new Max Mallowan and Florian is your Agatha! Thank you for the video!
Looking forward to following The Time Team tomorrow. How exciting hope something comes of this adventure. Well done Michael for all that digging in such a confined space. Love your humour and it is so nice to see you back again Michael.
I admire your determination Michael and I do hope you find some satisfaction as you keep digging away. Just be sure to be safe, we all want you around!
I'm really happy to see you back on RUclips! And with this amazing archeology dig! I wanted to be down there digging lol. But I'm on the other side of the world, and I'm getting to old to be digging holes in the ground. So looking forward to the next installment 😊
I noticed this a long time ago, but never got around to commenting on it. Your intro has to be one of the single most best on all of youtube. It is so wonderfully reminicient of old BBC docu shows and the like that it just feels so large and amazing.

Oh my goodness what a crazy time you’re having… interesting find but not sure if it’s the tunnel so time will tell. ❤ Michael you have the most beautiful blue eyes and sense of humor. 😀
I have claustrophobia so I give you huge kudos getting in that hole! Gosh I hope you guys have a huge tunnel eventually and perhaps find some fun stuff in there. So far so good, I like the structure of the walls in there. Just promise if there is any moment it feels unsafe get out and don't go further. Exciting adventure though.
Good job Michael. Forging away to find this mysterious tunnel. Once you get the digger it will go much faster. Steve and Yanis helped too. And even Florian made an appearance. Stay safe. Till next one.
This is so time team! Love it! Excavation trenches! And Phil impersonations! Good to see you vloging again Michael and Florian. Best wishes and stay safe from Neil in Australia 🇦🇺
Ok- I’m going to make a wild guess and speculate this tunnel or part of it was built when the prior chateau was built. It could have been part of a security system that allowed people to go in or out of the original chateau. It may have been very wooded in that area to provide cover for “covert operations.”I can’t remember when the older chateau was built but it would certainly fit with an era where there was a lot of unrest and upheaval. Revolution time frame? That’s my guess . Cant wait for more. Can you get in touch with a local historian that may be familiar with these things. Yours isn’t the only chateau that has these. It’s too well (pun intended) built for water systems imho. Good luck Michael! I’ll be looking forward to part II!🌼🌼🌼
You could have put a reference grid on the ground. Zipped up into the air with the drone to take a new photo. Over layed the two photos and used the reference grid to work out exactly where the entrance is.
I absolutely love this … makes me larfff it do … it’s good59 see lots of good clean positive energy. Well done guys looks like the start of an amazing story here
My goodness, people have such comments! Im really enjoying this, no matter what you dig with, how you dig it, where you are, what it used to be, or if and what you find! Rock on!
Michael, you are thoroughly entertaining, always getting into some sort of fascinating predicament. I do hope that Gwendolyn does not mind you digging up her chateau garden! 😮
@Doing It Ourselves When you pulled out Tony Robinson "As usual we have just three days to do it" I got quite a chuckle! It was actually watching Time Team (specifically on a Historic Building Digs Spree) that led the algorithm to suggest Steph's channel to me, and then she led me to you. Thanks, Time Team! *As I was typing this, I was just listening while typing, and when Phil's voice came on, I was like "Crazy RUclips has switched me to a Time Team Episode since I was talking about it!" When I glanced at the screen there was a brief moment of confusion while my brain tried to take in Phil's voice emerging from Michael's body😂😂🤷🏼♀️. GREAT IMITATION!!! 🤣👍🏻🤣👍🏻
For future reference, a square shovel is for transferring dirt from one place to another. A rounded shovel is for digging a hole. 😅. Great video! Thanks for sharing!
Michael is in discovery mode! 😁 Billy once pointed out the chapel floor looked to be covering stairs; I wonder if the tunnel your searching for connects with that. I'm intrigued...
@@DoingItOurselvesOfficial Oh! 🤣 Well best of luck just the same. I can't wait to see what you learn about it. Have someone note the garden wall ocassionally when you dig. It looks to have broken & moved down at some point in the past where the tunnel runs under it.
Love the Petherick time team!!! Very excited to see what you turn up. I've seen those jets in quite a few videos from many RUclipsrs you know. While watching you dig I was thinking of the men who fought in wars there and had to dig trenches, what a job that must have been. Keep up the hard work, I'm sure you'll get the tunnel system all figured out.😊
It’s fascinating Michael. Very pleased you have head protection on. I do worry about your safety and a cave in. I would hate for you to be hurt. Please wear gloves to protect your artist hands as they are important to you as you are a very talented artist in more ways than one. To never see you draw or paint or hear play the piano fills me with concern. Ok, so I’m an old lady who worries, very true, however if I didn’t say something and I hadn’t pointed it out and something happened I would never forgive myself. I will watch avidly to see your progress. Thank you. May you please take care and stay safe.
Michael so good to see you even though you've been down in a hole all day !!!! Be really careful as you don't want the earth to collapse in on you. Hugs, Kathy USA
Great intro Michael! Intriguing expedition you have undertaken to locate the chateau tunnels. It will be interesting to see what the digger finds on the other side of the wall. Hats off to you and your support team. These vlogs will be invaluable to future generations. See you soon🙏❤️
That cannot be the entrance, since two men cannot stand side by side. Good job getting the digger and going from the other side instead. Love your humor, Michael. Billy's yard is going to be a mess, but I bet he is chomping at the bit to find it as much as you are. So glad you are back, Michael. 🧡
All hands on deck. Lovely to see Michael and Sadie helping to solve another mystery at the Chateau. Cheers 😮
I love Michael’s positivity and can-do attitude! Nothing is impossible for him. It’s refreshing! 👏🏻
Great guy
Absolutely wonderful
That’s because he can do anything & everything. Truly!
While this is exciting to see, PLEASE be careful when it comes to tunnels. Especially ancient ones! You have no idea if it is on the brink of collapse or not. Please be safe, Michael!
i was just going to leave the exact same comment! a fascinating project, but please be careful michael!
Michael and his brother look so much alike I ger confused. Thank you for the work you do you are an inspiration
The Phil Harding impersonation of digging a hole in a well is spot on. Thanks Michael. Cheers

Great Phil impression! You should definitely sieve through all the earth spoils, not just to get the bits of glass out but just in case there are any little treasures or bits of interesting history of the Chateau.
Perhaps you might get enough bits of old glass and china to put a mosaic top on something?
Michael I’m so happy you’re filming, I love your sense of humor as well, keep them coming. 😊❤

Great video, Michael.
Great Phil Harding impression! Love Time Team and this whole episode was Time Team recreated. Thank you for your fearlessness!

There are 3 ways this can go:

LOL the best Phil Harris impersonation ever! I actually thought, when you first started digging in the yard, that you needed to put a tarp down for spoils so you don't wreck the grass, like they do on Time Team LOL!
Best Phil Harding impression I’ve heard in awhile! Love Time team and your adventures 😊
Thank you Michael. I was about to start my day when the notification alerted me to your vlog. So, of course I immediately stopped what I was doing and watched you digging and digging and digging.
Boys on big adventures outside digging in the dirt and laughing. What could be better. ☀️🌈🤗❤️🕊️🍀⚾

Michael is in discovery mode! 😁
Billy once pointed out the chapel floor looked to be covering stairs; I wonder if the tunnel your searching for connects with that.
I'm intrigued...
Probably not as it’s several miles away 😂 but it must lead somewhere
@@DoingItOurselvesOfficial Oh! 🤣
Well best of luck just the same.
I can't wait to see what you learn about it.
Have someone note the garden wall ocassionally when you dig. It looks to have broken & moved down at some point in the past where the tunnel runs under it.
Great impression of Phil from Time Team! Lol😊
I love that you are sharing the new adventure and you have the greatest humor
Love the Petherick time team!!!
Very excited to see what you turn up. I've seen those jets in quite a few videos from many RUclipsrs you know.
While watching you dig I was thinking of the men who fought in wars there and had to dig trenches, what a job that must have been. Keep up the hard work, I'm sure you'll get the tunnel system all figured out.😊
I missed your videos glad you are back. Looking forward to seeing all your adventures.
We all love a bit off time team😂,be caerefull please michael.nice to see you here we missed you
Facinating finding the tunnel or drains. I enjoyed your video as always. Blessings.
It is amazing that it is so well built!
Michael so good to see you even though you've been down in a hole all day !!!! Be really careful as you don't want the earth to collapse in on you. Hugs, Kathy USA
Michael, I’ve missed your posts😀💞. You are so much fun!!
Great intro Michael! Intriguing expedition you have undertaken to locate the chateau tunnels. It will be interesting to see what the digger finds on the other side of the wall. Hats off to you and your support team. These vlogs will be invaluable to future generations. See you soon🙏❤️
