Just went on "Celebrity" tour in Hollywood (a week ago) and our tour guide said Floyd Mayweather lived there now. Don't know how true that is but yeah.

I read a book on the Kennedy's once. If the book was accurate Rose Kennedy knew what was going on. Catholics didn't divorce in those days.
He also had an affair with Marlene Detrick.

I know a lot about Gloria Swanson. I met people in New York in the 80s who knew Gloria Swanson. She was a huge star in the 1920s. Huge!! Joe Kennedy destroyed her life took her money and left her with nothing. He used Gloria Swanson to break into the movies and destroyed her life. Joe Kennedy was a real bastard not only to her but to many people in his life. The great thing about Gloria Swanson is that she literally picked herself up and started all over again. She was a courageous and great lady! I admire her!!

Jordan great video, Gloria really was a great star in her time, because silent films had no language barrier, and even though the films were silent the actors did have scripts and did speak, even if no one heard them, they learn to convey their words with their faces.

I have seen some of her silents,they were pretty good. Her childhood home in Chicago is still around.
One of my favorite things to do when I visit LA is to drive around Beverly Hills at night checking out the sweet pads of classic Hollywood stars and crimes. I happened on the Beverly Drive home and walked it, like you are here, and I found a weed crusher in the grass rght out in front. I still have it, I like to think that Gloria hooked a sister up there :)

The current owners of the property tore down the Gillette mansion that Gloria Swanson bought. The new owners built an ugly monolith of a house and replaced Gloria Swanson's beautiful Italian villa.

Thats what I always think of too. What the new people that live there do professionally. It has to be very expensive to live in this area.
There are many extremely wealthy people in America that can afford the best of properties BUT it may bore you. Many people with big money are second and third generation business owners that own a manufacturing biz making widgets and gizmos.
There are a lot of ways to be wealthy in America, something we should all be happy about and never jealous as we know the American dream can be achieved by us all. Warning: Many are never happy even after achieving that lifestyle.

About 15 years ago my husband and I did a self-guided driving tour of Beverly Hills. The house in this video isn't the same as the one that was there then and touted as belonging to Gloria Swanson. It was a large bungalow style house and had no fence across the front. I remember being surprised at how accessible it seemed.
They tore down Gloria Swanson's beautiful Italian style mansion and built the ugly house that is there now.
Sidenote: doesn't great landscaping make all the difference??!! 👍

Historian Cari Beauchamp wrote a book (I forget the exact title) detailing Joseph Kennedy's adventures in Hollywood and how he ruined Gloria Swanson financially. To this day, he remains the only outsider who has ever beat Hollywood insiders at their own game. In 1931, when the stock market crash of 1929 had left people reeling in shock, he walked out of California and back to his family in Boston with several million dollars in cash. He remains the only person who ever ran three Hollywood studios simultaneously: FBO, First National, and RKO. Another fascinating Cari Beauchamp book is "Without Lying Down: Frances Marion, Mary Pickford, and the Powerful Women of Early Hollywood." this one is also loaded with information about Joe Kennedy and how he destroyed the career of Fred Thompson, Marion's first husband, a forgotten Western movie star, in order to promote the career of Tom Mix instead. It makes fascinating reading.

The former Kennedy house at 801 N Rodeo was built in 1913. The oldest house on Beverly is 907 N Beverly, built in 1912. Records say Gloria lived at 904 N Crescent, but that house was razed...the 40 million dollar mess that sets there now was built in 2011.....and it sat directly across from the hotel.
Gloria Swanson's beautiful Italian style mansion at 904 N. Crescent was torn down and replaced by the ugly house that is there now. I have a historic postcard showing the house as it was when she lived there. It was a beautiful house.

Joe Kennedy also bought her a mansion in Englewood, NJ., a few minutes outside of NYC My house is 100ft away from "Gloriacrest.". It belonged to a Polish prince before Joe and Gloria.

I found passages from the book, Smithsonian documentaries, interview with Barbara Walters, etc. I generally watch and read as much as I can, and put together the best reasonable sounding story. There are always variations in every source, but if you get multiple resources you can "usually" find the truth.. or a great story

Holy hedges eh! Great info on Joe Kennedy & Gloria Swanson affair. I knew of it from reading biographies on the Kennedy's, but not how it came to be. I read that he had taken Gloria on a trip by ship to Europe, with Rose and the children also onboard, presumably unaware. Who knows with Rose Kennedy though, she was a staunch Catholic, so would stay married no matter what transpired! Super interesting to see the beautiful properties involved. :)

Side note: if you dig old Hollywood at play, this book is a must have! Jean Howard was a photographer and wife to the famous Hollywood Agent Charles Feldman. This is her photo memior FILLED with the creme-de-la-creme of Hollywood from the 30's- 50's.

The reason I ask is I'm severely hearing impaired and I depend on the cc. I noticed that sometimes your videos are captioned and sometimes they're not. If you know anything about it could you let me know? I hate when I can't hear your videos. lol
+Jamie I'm not sure about the captioning. I never alter it in any way, but I have seen that be the case... I personally don't put them on or remove them. It's a youtube thing that randomly happens.

She wrote her book because people were saying that Gloria’s son Joe was Kennedy’s love child. Gloria’s son Joe had been adopted by her many years before. No sure if this house was purchased by Joe Kennedy because he charged a lot of things he said he bought her he actually charged to her account and he bankrupted her. This came out in her book.

The Swanson mansion across from the BH Hotel was demolished in the early 60's. It was built by King Gillette of razor blade fame. The current mansion dates from the 80's.

It really wasn’t secret at all. They lived openly in her bungalow. All of Hollywood knew about it as did his wife. And Gloria Swanson wrote about it in her auto biography .
It was no secret in Boston my parents knew all about it.
Love this story !! I'm probably too late for the contest , but I wish you could go to some of the houses that Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott lived in . They have lived in several houses since they've been married . I haven't been watching long enough and you may have already done this before , but if not I sure would love to finally see which towns those houses were in . I have always wanted to know . I really wasn't watching reality TV shows that much until one year I got sick and had to stay home for a little while . My daughter got me to watch Home Sweet Hollywood and I was hooked .
