Thanks for this review! I liked to see your perspective as a Maverick owner. It was a twist of fate that I ended up with a Santa Cruz 3 years ago. My wife and I went car shopping and (online) both Ford and Hyundai dealerships said that they had a Maverick and Santa Cruz to see and test drive. No Maverick at Ford, but one Santa Cruz was available and I got it. It's the SEL with Activity package, and FWD (non-turbo, no DCT, which I'm glad about because of issues). I was surprised how much I liked it. Highway mileage averages between 30 - 33. Not bad for a non-hybrid and it's a smooth ride. I know they are both considered small trucks, but it's really comparing apples and oranges. To me, the Santa Cruz is more "car like" and the Maverick is more "truck like." Both have their plusses and minuses. It's too bad that finding a Maverick at a dealership is harder than finding a needle in a haystack.

after waiting 12 months for my Ford Maverick hybrid XLT, i bought the Hyundai Santa Cruz SEL W/ activity package. like you said, the ride is much better. The inside is amazingly better than the Maverick. that dial a gear shifter in the Maverick seams cheap and wrong i prefer the t shifter. dampened tailgate. the rear window defroster. came with sunroof (Maverick adds about $1000. ) came with tonneau cover (about $1000 again) -yes the activity package is about $3600 more than the regular SEL- i think it is worth it.
for me i found a 2022 used with 9K the same month my 2023 Maverick was coming into the dealership for $27K instead of the $31K i was going to pay for the Maverick. i do love the Santa Cruz. the only thing the Maverick ha over my car is the 35-40 MPG. i get about 20 in town, but i do not need to drive much, and it is still better than my 5.7L Pontiac Formula Firebird.

Good vid.....I own a 2023 Maverick. I figured the SC would drive better and smoother as my truck has a choppy ride. Funny how you said ya it drives better and the engine is buttery smooth but I just dont see the value......Well $9k gets you a butter smooth engine and a really nice ride..... I also like the storage in the bed and the hard bed cover. All that said the SC does not come across as a truck. To me it is a suv ....it looks like a suv....and drives like a suv.....heck nothing wrong with that. Its a really functional vehicle. But for me.....I prefer the truck look of the Maverick and the cost savings are nice but honestly I wouldnt mind a nicer ride and a butery smooth engine for a few more bucks

I had a 22 Mav XLT hybrid, now driving a 24 SEL AWD Cruz.
Only thing I miss from the Mav hybrid is the 38 mpg I averaged, but hybrid quirkiness offsets that and working from home so not driving much.
SEL trim is the one to get and addresses most of your dislikes with the Nightfall trim.
But the higher trims do give you the retractable tonneau cover and much quicker turbo with DTC, but I don' t need them.

I've got a lariat maverick and like the look better than the Hyundai because it looks more like a truck. I didn't know it had a dual clutch transmission, I wouldn't buy it just for that reason. I used to have a ford focus with that transmission and I'm convinced it's the worst transmission ever made

I've got 9000 miles on my Santa Cruz. Bought it as a company vehicle and it has been superb. The Santa Cruz loses its value in the upper trim levels. Its not worth 40k at all. I bought the AWD non-turbo model and in my opinion this is the sweet spot in the lineup. Better MPG than the turbo(I'm averaging about 27-28) and to me this transmission is better than the DCT. I have mixed feelings on the looks of it. It's not a great looking vehicle, but all of these "wanna-be" trucks are ugly. Maverick, Santa Cruz, Subaru Baja, Ridgeline. All ugly. I do think the Santa Cruz is unique and quirky in a charming way though. I've also done some light off-roading in it and it has done fine. Hyundai also does great in the warranty dept and my dealer also tossed in free tires for the life of the vehicle. Out the door price was $34k. Overall I'm more than pleased. Long term reliability TBD.

I test drove a 2022 Santa Cruz AWD SEL (non-turbo) while I was waiting almost a year for my 2022 Maverick XLT 2.0L ecoboost with Luxury pkg. to be built. I almost bought the Santa Cruz. I could have had it 6 months sooner than the Maverick. In the end I waited for my Maverick. The 2 were within $500 in price (about 30K). The thing that swayed me was that the Maverick had a better bed and more horsepower with actually a couple MPG better fuel economy. Plus the Lux pkg on the Maverick gave me a few extra things. The Santa Cruz did have a few pros over the Maverick. The interior is nicer, that is to say more upscale. One of my main complaints is that the Maverick has ultra cheap interior plastics that scratch WAYYYY too easy. Also the sucky music interface. The storage bin in the bed of the SC is gimmicky and comes at the cost of a full size spare which you can get in the Maverick. One thing I really don't get is when people say the Maverick is ugly. It has traditional pick up styling, so if it is ugly, then so is every other traditional pick up. Those with a crew cab and shorter bed anyways.

To me, quality means how long a car lasts. Does the engine last? Does the transmission last? When it breaks down, how expensive is the labor? Does the hybrid setup prevent the mechanic from easily getting to what he or she needs to get to or does it add hours of labor cost? That's what quality means to me.
Quality isn't something that has a lot of bells and whistles, but you need to trade in the car as soon as you hit 100k so that you have car payments all over again because the computer gadgetry is starting to go.
I'd be interested in knowing about the quality of the transmission, the electronics, the engines, do they last or should a buyer plan on getting a new car in 5 years or less?

    • @jmc6000
      @jmc6000  9 месяцев назад

Well Hyundai as of late does not have a high standard of quality especially when it comes to their engines and to some extent their transmissions as well.

I'm seriously contemplating buying the SC but not the DCT turbo in the higher end levels. I have read about all the transmission failures in the turbo engine that it will sway me clear and I think for the money, the SEL is the way to go with AWD and keeps your costs down around the mid-30's. A lot of truck (or SUV) for the cost.

Limited & XRT models are the way to go. With a better Ride, Payload & Towing rating over the Mav...with better stability! If Towing is one goal? The Cruz wins hands down over the Maverick. The shorter bed and the manual rear sliding window on the Cruz is my only complaint. Also, you want to Deal w/ Hyundai corp over Ford. Check reviews! Most Ford dealers stink as well as the company! Sad but true....ALSO, the Warranty is second to NONE! All worth the 2-3 grand more you might pay for the Cruz!

There are a few things to like about the cruz but a lot I disliked. Too many cabin controls on the touch screen. Much prefer physical controls on the mav. The rear passenger window placement sucks for most rear passengers aka children. They slope too high and just not great according to our daughter. Plus more cramped for sure. For reliability the transmission is suspect. As mentioned the bed is shorter and then the rolling cover chews more space. The little ice bucket trunk bit is largely useless. Just not worth the price tag.

It's just Night edition, not Nightfall. And if you do an actual apples to apples trim comparison say Lariat FX4 vs XRT the price difference is barely noticeable. Lariat fx4 with tow package runs $39,000 and XRT runs about $41,000. $2000 isn't killing anyone at this point.

    • @invictusf5790

You people harp on cheaper. If you actually watched an apples to apples trim comparison you'd realize the Lariat FX4 with 4k tow package is only $2000 less than the XRT model. Plus, if you remove the hard cover box and put on a soft cover the bed is 52" compared to the Maverick's 54" bed. I prefer the bigger interior of the Maverick but SC interior isn't that much smaller. You guys act like 1"-2" smaller will break passenger legs off. MPG isn't great because you're rolling an aggressive 4300lb "truck" around with a four cylinder turbo. The Mav doesn't get great mileage either unless you get the hybrid.
I'd say the really, really only negative knocks against the SC are the DCT is suspect for towing and off-road and you have to get your own tow package/brake controller, whereas you have easy access to that with the Mav. I guess it'll come down to dealer mark up and availability for me. I do get the look might not be appealing to some, but the XRT's peppiness, higher tow capacity, and more involved tech give the SC a slight advantage.
