I’m Christina, a homeschooling mom of 5 kids (ages 1, 2, 5, 10, & 13). I love the Charlotte Mason homeschooling approach, and many others, but I’d say I’m more of an eclectic homeschooler-mixing the different aspects of homeschool styles that I love-living books, literature-based learning, Montessori, and so much more!
Whether you are considering homeschooling, new to homeschooling, or just looking for some encouragement and inspiration for your motherhood journey, I hope you feel welcome and encouraged here 🤍

Hi Christina! Great Video! Thank you! Please don't forget the homeschooling Dads. 😊 I'm new to the community but I have decided to homeschool my high school son. 😊 I have so much anxiety about the whole process but I refuse to let fear of the unknown stop me! Thank You!
You got this!
Every homeschooling state should be low regulation PERIOD.
So excited to hear all about what it takes to homeschool in NY!
I am newly homeschooling this year! We did the virtual/remote learning and ready to take back our time and education with our kids. My husband and live in NY and want to travel with the kids more! Thank you for this.
You’re so welcome! I think you will love it!
Every state should be low regulation.
It is so good to hear that "highly regulated" doesn't necessarily mean impossible!! I am so glad you have never had any issues homeschooling in NY! I loved your perspective so much! Thank you so much for organizing this collab, sweet friend! ❤
Yes! Still SO worth it 100%!! Thanks Christie-so glad you joined us ❤️
Agreed
Hi! I, new to your show and I just love your love for Jesus! I too am in upstate NY, close to oneonta actually. Something I’ve found to be more difficult than the homeschool regulations here is finding others who are also homeschooling and getting together. There are tons of groups, and something I’ve noticed is that they break before they can get going into something great for the kiddos. My son is in elementary and I wish I could connect with moms as this job is so with it, but also so lonely if you don’t connect enough.
Girl you gave us life I’m in NYS definitely looking forward to getting the ball rolling thank you 🙌🏽
I'm originally from NYC and live in MD and have lived in Texas totally different in requirements. I have wanted to move back up north (NY upstate or further). This video was so helpful because I was so worried about the regulations. Now I am really thinking about it
I definitely wouldn’t let that stop you!
I would never guess from watching your videos that you live in a high regulated state that just shows that you can homeschool and have the freedom to do whatever you have to do when you homeschool .. to make it work.. this was such an amazing video Christina you've given so much great information for moms and have encouraged so many by sharing your experience and especially because it's your second year homeschooling... it just goes to show that you do have the freedom to choose even in a high regulated state .. I learned so much from even researching about Canadian laws... the province that comes to mind that is similar to New York is Quebec here in Canada. Great video mama ❤
Thank you so much sweet friend! ❤️
This is saving my life right now, THANK YOU. I'm homeschooling for the first time in the waaaaay Northcountry and I was so lost on the IHIP, and I can't seem to find a single sample one online. It finally clicked for me when you explained it! I can do this!
Yay, I’m so glad! You’re welcome!!
There is a fb group called NYS homeschooling and it has many resources as well!
This is our second year homeschooling and my oldest is now in the stage of assessment state test or not and as much as I want to assess I would rather wait and I am grateful for that opportunity along with the many that homeschool gives us. We are in NY as well and our school district has been wonderful thankfully.
Thank you for your insight.
So glad you mentioned the HSLDA website. They were available for all homeschoolers to reach out for legal questions and problems. Great collab! 💕💕
Thanks for watching Summer!
Thank you for this! I am in NYC and this is accurate and encouraging. I finished my first year of homeschooling (with success and no problems) and have to agree it wasn't as daunting as as it sounds. I learned my teaching style and how my kids learn. I am looking forward to this new school year! Now that I've found your channel, I'm excited to follow along.
You are so welcome, I’m so glad you’re having a great experience, and glad you’re here! Thanks for watching 😊
I choose to home school my upcoming 7th grader here in Queens for a multitude of reasons. The IHIP made me sooooo nervous. You have made things so much easier for me! Thank You. You’ve made a subscriber out of me!
So interesting how different it is everywhere.
In New Zealand we send off an exemption letter and once that's sorted and approved ( and it's rare that it isn't, they might just want more information) - then we are free to do what we like. No mandated subjects, no regulations, testing etc.
Thank you!! Due to a job relocation, my family is moving to Upstate New York from the midwest. I was so worried about New York Regulations, but you have really eased my mind.
You are so welcome! You got this mama!! ♥️
As a fellow NY homeschooler, thank you so much for sharing this information! I have a 1st and 3rd grader this year (2nd year homeschooling) so I'm curious to see how the annual assessments will work for this coming year since they were waived last year.
Of course! It will definitely be interesting to see how it all goes!!
I love how encouraging this is! It is so daunting as a new homeschool mom to figure out how to get started. Thanks so much for putting together this collab. ☺️
Thank you so much for joining! It was so interesting to hear about homeschooling in New Zealand!
Thank you for the video. I am a stay at home dad in upstate ny and I am struggling with the school system.
I love that you break all of it down so well for people to understand. I feel like looking at the requirements would be overwhelming for many!
Thanks Christie! I agree, it can be overwhelming!!
I love how you are so positive even in having a high regulation state. Homeschooling is possible no matter what state you are in. Great video as alway Christina. 😊
Thanks so much Brittany! And thank you so much for joining in on this collab!!
We are moving country and we are looking at our next country’s homeschooling law’s. I love the idea of putting subject to change on the documents. We included extra hours that aren’t sitting down learning. We live in a free country for homeschooling but I’m not sure what the next location will be like in the homeschool laws will be and it’s awesome that you still have freedom in a highly legated states. We also live a lifestyle of learning even though we normally travel a lot.
Right! I feel the same way!
Bless your heart! You have made this sound so effortless and worth the work, and it is! I live in California which is surprisingly lax for us homeschoolers. I so appreciate your refreshing perspective!
Thanks Tanya! California sounds like an amazing state to honeschool in!!!
Thank you so much for recording this video! My 5 year old son has Autism and he’s starting kindergarten this year. My nerves are a mess because I don’t know if he can handle a full public school day even in a special education class. I needed this video just to ease my nerves as to whether I can do this if I truly need to. I want to give public school a shot because the district is great. But I don’t know if he will be finishing in public school. 😮💨
States that have more than one option set the proper example for homeschooling
Thank you for helping to host this collab!!!!!
Of course! Thank you for joining us!
Very interesting video! We are in Florida with almost no regulations regarding homeschool.
Definitely jealous of the low regulations in other states!
Absolutely loved this video, so helpful! Thank you so much
I didn’t look into the difference between moderate and heavily regulated states. You surely do have more steps lol. Also, once again, thanks for including me in the collab!
It’s a bit much haha! You are so welcome! Thanks for joining!!
Great collab and resource!! Love that you gals made this one happen!!!
Thanks Anna! This was a fun one-and interesting to see how different the laws are!
I just joined hsdla. I am in NY i just pulled my daughter from 10th grade and they've been so helpful!!!
How is it going?!
THANK YOUUUUUUU.
We are going to try a private school next year because we both work full time out of the house but I’ve been thinking of homeschooling my gifted child for years. I now feel we can do a homeschool trial run over the summer? What do you think?
She just doesn’t fit into a public school box. I recently found out that NY is so regulated & got scared & said oh there’s no way! But really it doesn’t sound that bad! I figure I can do her enrichment classes as part of my IHIP?? They are now after school & she is already exhausted by the time she gets to them you know? They include “forest school” (for science), guitar lessons, a gifted school writing intensive, & Spanish school. She’s been doing all of these since she was 2 & now is stuck in kindergarten, slowing herself down to fit in & coloring all day. 🙄 she is SO much more than that!
So again, thank you for the mental rest & peace on this topic. 😊
Absolutely you can try it in the summer-and I think you will love how it allows you to customize your child’s education-which you’re already doing, but you can cut out the extra stuff that might just be too much “desk-time”
You’re amazing, thank you so much. Moving back to Long Island from SC (I know stupid, but we miss family lol) and this made me feel a little better.
Is anybody in SC? We are moving there from TX in a few weeks!
Great collab, Christina! Homeschooling is worth it wherever you are!
Thanks Erin! Definitely check out my Instagram post-I’m pretty sure I saw a couple mamas from SC on there!!
@@RootedHomeLife I don't have an Insta! Maybe I should get one.
Thank you for this!! In NY and starting with my two kiddos for the first time next month! Ahh
Thank you for this! We've been looking at orders to MA and the requirements for homeschool are so intimidating coming from Florida.
You are so welcome! It is so crazy to see the differences!!
Thank you from Queens, NY. Good video and not too much fluff thanks again
You’re so welcome! Thanks for watching!!
THANK YOU!!!!
Hi! I’m so happy I just found your channel! I’m in NY (Bronx) and I am really looking into homeschooling. Do you use the good and beautiful whole curriculum or you pick a choose other curriculums? I have a 2nd & 3rd grader. Can I also ask you do you have your kids in extra curricular activities so they have the social aspect? Or do you participate in a cooperative? I’m just curious. Thank you again for your video I’m going to check out more of your channel!
Thank you for the information. We homeschool in Wisconsin
I’m in Wisconsin as well!
New subscriber here! I just watched your homeschooling on a budget video & this one-I’m a fellow NY homeschooler. How do you set up your ihip when using unit studies & other resources? We’re starting our fifth homeschool year (fourth year reporting-first year was Kindergarten), and we’ve always used a box curriculum so my ihips have been really simple as I’ve just listed out our textbooks. This is my first year having multiple grades (I have two fourth graders & a kindergartner), so I’m interested in doing more family style but I don’t know how to change my ihip to reflect that. Also, do you make your ihip more generic in order to utilize the free resources/budget friendly options? Sorry for all the questions, but I love the idea of keeping our homeschool budget down, especially because now that my younger children are getting closer to school age, our homeschool expenses are getting higher.
I honestly just list “Gather Round Homeschool Curriculum” or whatever the “brand” is and then on my quarterly reports I list the topics we covered! I also don’t list every little resource or unit study, just the main ones for the IHIP and then just the topics for the quarterly. Hope this helps!!
Fellow NY homeschool momma wave to you!
Yay!
You answered the kindergarten question lol thank you. I needed this video!
This year is my first year reporting my daughter is in first grade. I’ve been told I need to submit a written narrative.
Yup! At the end of the year!
Do you have a video addressing unenrollment letters from public school and can that be and unenrollment/letter of intent since it is the end of a school year? Or do I not have to worry about the letter of intent just yet? That is where I am at in my process. I have homeschooled before many years ago (my oldest son from birth-3rd grade) he is actually graduating this year from public school. I have other kids who will be staying in public but because my kindergartener is having issues with aggression (possible high functioning Autism/ADHD) I feel it is no longer safe for him to be there. He truly wants to hone school and asks daily if it’s a school day.
You might as well just send in the letter of intent. Otherwise you can do it anytime before 2 weeks of missed school. So essentially you could pull him tomorrow and then you have two weeks to submit a letter of intent.
I have always wondered about New York!!!!!!
It is definitely different than California haha!
Great info
Thanks!
NY here as well
Yes....they say "highly regulated"
And I was seriously about petrified 😂
Just get regulations and follow THEM no extra needed, send in required documents and I promise ITS NOT THAT BAD!!!
It really isn’t that bad!!
Thank you soooo much!!! Loved this video!
You’re so welcome!!
Hello I'm in NYC and wanted to know more about the standardized exams.
I’m sorry I missed this! I know it is a bit different for NYC, but it’s all outlined on the HSLDA website!!
Thx 😊😊😊😊
EXCELLENT video!!! Needed this when I started 🤗
Now.....high school 😂😬
Yes! Same!! And we are starting high school this year too!
@@RootedHomeLife I have a cpl years yet.... just researching, learning, planning stage
Hi,
I’m the mother of a son who is on the spectrum.
I want to home school him but am worried about his social progress as he is shy by nature and makes friends by seeing them consistently each day. Any advice on how I can achieve this while homeschooling?
Also, thank you for breaking down the requirements to getting started in this process!
Yes! Are there homeschool groups in your area? Art classes? Science groups? Nature study groups? Chess? Anything that he’s interested in that meets consistently sounds like it might work!
You are so very welcome, I am happy to help! I definitely think you can make this work-it may even be better in regard to not having to be “on” socially all day, and for you to be able to help him navigate it! You get to choose who he’s around, what works, what doesn’t, etc!
I am in a highly regulated state plus my kindergarten child has an IEP. Do you know how my process of beginning homeschooling may be different?
What state are you in? Have you checked the HSLDA website? In NY (we are highly regulated too) kindergarten isn’t compulsory so I technically didn’t have to report, so I just informed them we were homeschooling and did nothing else.
The IEP shouldn’t change anything
I live in NYS specifically Nassau county. The school district is very strict and seems like they may require more than other districts. I just want to be prepared at all angles and make sure I comply 100% But I will definitely check out the HSDL website. Thank you for your videos and information you share!
i'm homeschool ing NYS _ Long island
Hi. Thank you so much for this information. This will be my first year homeschooling. I am a mom of 2 boys with my eldest entering 10th grade,
and my youngest entering 6th grade. We reside in Orange county NY. I was wondering if you could you give me some recommendations for curriculum and do you like or use any online courses? I appreciate your help! Gina ;)
Hi Gina! How exciting!! I actually have a whole playlist of my curriculum picks for this school year-I have a 5th grader and 9th grader so much of what I use for them will work perfect for your kids, just one level up in things like math! I’d watch those and the Family Subjects one. Let me know if you have any questions about any of them! ruclips.net/p/PL74nWBux1KOEMuZ-n0usA4nkHfnO9H3uU
@@RootedHomeLife thank you so much!!
Hey question if my child does individual work in New York by themselves while I am not home can I count that as hours in nyc I know you need 990 hours for high school.
Yes!
What if you chose a online school like K-12 Do you still have to send in all of that or do you just have to tell them that you’re sending them to that school and find out if they except it
That’s a good question. If it’s homeschooling online then I’ll guessing you would need to. If it’s an accredited private school then probably not. I would ask the school, they should be able to answer that!!
Are you in contact with homeschooling parents in all 50 states?
If we r pulling our kids out of regular school after they were in 2 semesters do we still have to submit 4 quarterly reports(
I’m pretty sure you would subtract however many report cards they got/will get, and then the rest would be quarterly reports! They are simple, mine are one one page! What grades are they in? Are you in NY?
For the years you did the written narrative for the annual assessment, can the parents write it out or should it be done by a NewYork State certified teacher?
The parent can write the narrative!
@@RootedHomeLife thanks for your quick response!💕
I sent my letter of intent by June 17 and it was confirmed that it was received, is that the receipt you are talking about? 1st time homeschooling, trying to find my way
Yes! Usually they request an IHIP at that point, but either way uou are supposed to send it within 30 days of their acknowledgment of your letter! Hope this helps 😊
@@RootedHomeLife thank you stay safe😊
I AM STILL CONFUSED ABOUT GRADING, I AM HERE IN LONG ISLAND NEW YORK. TRYING TO FIND OUT WHAT TO DO IN THAT ASPECT?
Hey Veronica! What grade are your children? I actually don’t give numeric grades until high school in order to put them on the transcript, but I know some people do prefer to give grades. If you do like to give grades think about 100 being perfect and then take points off from there-if things are wrong, not complete, etc-but I prefer no grades at the younger ages, because I expect their best work so I will just ask them to redo certain things until I think it’s their best work. Or if something is technically wrong we go over it together and they change it. I hope this helps!
@@RootedHomeLife THANK YOU LOVE FOR ANSWERING BACK SO QUICKLY! I ONLY HAVE ONE CHILD, AND MY DAUGHTER IS 9 GOING ON TEN NEXT MONTH. I HONESTLY HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT GRADING ASSIGNMENTS. SO I JUST THOUGHT I WOULD ASK, I'VE BEEN GRADING HER BY A GRADE CHART I FOUND BEHIND MY HOMESCHOOLING PLANNER. BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR INSIGHT!
@@mscoffeeplans You are so welcome. I think if you want to continue doing it that way that’s obviously fine, but not necessary!
@@RootedHomeLife Thank you so, so much! I've been so glued to your content. It has helped so much. Keep these videos coming

Hi! Where are the standardized tests taken?
Hi, I live in NY and I'm a new homeschooling mom. My son is 5. He was suppose to start kindergarten but I chose to keep him home. Reporting is required starting at the age of 6 right? Also is kindergarten a required grade to compete. I feel like that question isn't clearly answered an I want to know if I'm doing everything right. Thank you!
School is not compulsory until 1st grade so technically no! I recommend a gentle approach-for example, I used Gather Round Honeschool Ready to Read program which is everything you need and my daughter loved it!
@@RootedHomeLifeis it 1st grade or the age of 6 in NY

Are daddy's welcome as well? ;-)

Thank you
Hi Christina! First of all thanks for this video. I have a 4 year old and entering Kindergarten I am considering not sending my child to school as it is still not safe for children during this time of Covid19. I’m also just diagnosed with Breast Cancer and can not take a risk to sent my son to school during chemotherapy treatment, but I will like my son to do some kind of learning while in home, I also live in NYC and I am considering homeschooling with him, I really don’t know if I can do it but I will try my best. Can you sent me any curriculum for kindergarten? Or maybe guide me more with this? I really need some help. Thank you! 🙏
You got this mama! I’m sorry to hear what you’re going through, I will be praying for you. I’d recommend Gather Round Honeschool Ready to Read program-that is all you need unless you want to do more!
@@RootedHomeLife Thank you for answering me so quickly and thank you very much for your prayers. The first thing I should do is a letter of intent? then should I wait for an answer? Do I need to report every quarterly in Kindergarten? I’m so lost I read that kids under 6 no need to do it, and some people said yes we need to report 🤔 So, what are the right steps? Thank you Christina!
@@lc9619 No, you don’t have to report until 6 in NY! If you want to you can, but don’t have to!
@@RootedHomeLife oh ok! So, there is no stress 🙂 thank you!
Are you a LEAH member ?
No, I’m not familiar with it!
What region of the state are you in?We are in the Hudson Valley.
Capital District!
What happens if your child doesn't do well on a standardized test?
They just have to be in the 30% percentile or show a certain margin of growth from the previous year. I think they can just take it again.
