    100% agree especially about the kids stuff. It makes me ill to see the tiny children have screens in front of their faces 24/7.

    that's hella impressive tbh. i have similar issues with youtube but fortunately it's not on my phone, or at least not frequently. i mostly binge on my pc or using my laptop in bed. it seems nice to go back about 20 years and listen to cds and just using your phone to call or text. you have less control that way and i'm sure it contributes a lot to living more in the moment. i remember always having long trips in the car with my dad and just listening to cd after cd and i'm sure kids now days probably dont have that experience, most are probably in the back seat on an ipad with headphones on.

      I have fond memories of the same thing. Listening to country radio stations on family vacation with my grandparents and everybody actually having conversations. I'd get annoyed at the time sometimes but you miss that stuff when you get older and it sucks that a lot of families these days seem so isolated from one another. I don't actually have a laptop anymore either but I've considered getting another one. I'm just worried I'll fall back into old habits lol. For portable entertainment I do have a modded PSP and 3DS though which keeps me busy if I really need something to do. Thanks for watching Mr. Juice69!

    When my current phone gives up and dies im gonna replace it with a flip phone before it dies im just deleting most social media apps just because i noticed how dependent i became on them to constantly stimulate my brain and also how often people on social media just put me in a bad mood

    Wow I can relate 100%. My wife and I went without our smartphones for the entire month of January and I can really understand the idea of “living in the moment”. This is something that a smartphone can take a toll on you. At least for me it was. Your video actually inspired me to pursue it again if I'm honest. The downsides like GPS, Spotify are actually very annoying but as you say there are a lot of upsides. Especially reaching friends via SMS on a small keyboard is sometimes really annoying. Some people can't be reached via SMS at all :D Well, there is a way and I think our generation is only just learning that a smartphone can also have a lot of downsides. This part has only really been around for 10-15 years. We are the first to have to learn to deal with it. I'm curious what people will think about it in 100 years

    • @JPepperL
      @JPepperL  8 месяцев назад +2

      Heck yeah man give it another shot! If I'm being honest Spotify is definitely the thing I miss the most lol. That's one thing where the limitations of physical media really don't work well for me. Listening to full albums is a really great and important experience but sometimes I just wanna make a playlist for the car and have 100s of songs at my finger tips. The dumb phone movement is really cool though and it's good to see a lot of younger people realizing that there might be a problem with the way we use phones these days. Thanks for the comment!

    I need a phone for my job but I think I'll try to find a way to get rid of my phone. I don't have the discipline to not use my phone. Its not as bad for me where I can't watch a movie or a play a single player game, but I definitely go to sleep watching yt shorts and stuff. I also scroll twitter way too much so I deactivated my account. If I really want handheld entertainment I still have my hacked 3ds. If I need to take notes I can use a notebook. If I want to take pictures I have enough to buy a good camera. Owning physical media is awesome like you mentioned and is easily better than streaming. Great video

    I used to keep watching what amounts to filler content on youtube; but eventually I thought: I'm basically wasting my time on this, I might as well watch actual films instead. I grabbed some random DVD player that was in my attic, bought a bunch of second hand DVDs that looked interesting and now half my wall is covered in DVDs.
    Also, for your Spotify problem, get an iPod.

    one thing that let me drastically reduce my smartphone use and youtube in general was understanding why I was using it. Tldr I was so fucking tired from uni , plus I slept just 5 hours tops each night. I needed that youtube nicotine hit.
    Also I started unsubscribing and unfollowing people on tumblr that I did not care about, why do I need to see these dumb videos etc
    I still use a smartphone cuz I have passwords apps, whatsapp to talk to my friends etc but I've removed all the stuff that I dont need
    Yeah Ive kept some subscriptions etc that are not like productive but I've noticed that I need some fun BS in my life

    I've considered getting a feature/"dumb" phone. I've already been getting back into physical media since I got a disk drive for my computer, and part of me misses when I was a kid and had wayyy less exposure to/dependence on the internet. Having a smartphone is super useful, yeah, but sometimes I think about doing that. It's kind of nice to know I'm not the only one lol, and that it's actually working out for you! Maybe I'll actually give it some more serious thought.

    the tablet kids thing is kinda crazy, im 22 and back in my day (ok boomer) when we didn't have satelite tv yet so until i was like 9 or 10 i only had 1 cartoon per day at 7pm on "adult" channel and apart from a few vhs and like 5 "kid movies" on pirated cds that was really it. now my year and 10 months or whatever old cousin "understands" scrolling on youtube, like she's choosing her favorite cartoons and songs by thumbnails and she's so delicate to the screen in a weird way as she just kid-handles physical toys and just bends and chews on them yet she's using a regular smartphone with just a tip of her finger. It's so weird, also she already has trouble to watch a seven minute long video and after like 90 seconds she's already clicking on another. the attention span is non existant

    I think that debloating a smartphone is a good idea. iPhones can't do it completely and fully, Androids can. Just use ADB to remove all the garbage. Remove as much as you can. All the upsides of modernity (payment, camera, etc), none of the bloat. Also, the tablet pandemic terrifies me as well (I'm a Zoomer as well). Individuals should not have mobile devices under the age of 12. Just, it's not a good idea.
    I also narrowly avoided all this by getting interested in the music my dad was listening to when I just turned 15. The Grateful Dead. That stuff requires a long attention span. By the time I was 16, I was listening to full concerts. It really helped my desire for entertainment, while letting me stay in the moment, and let me learn about culture. Good on you for quitting substances; you'll actually fly away, unlike August West.

    • @JPepperL
      @JPepperL  8 месяцев назад

      Love me some Grateful Dead. Yeah I think that debloating would be a good idea. I was never sure exactly how to do it but when the day comes that I need to switch back to a smart phone, I think that'll be the route I go.

    • @CoolCrescent186
      @CoolCrescent186 8 месяцев назад +1

      Hey now! What you're favorite concert? And if you want tips on how to debloat, the best thing I can say is to install and configure both Shizuku and Canta, and just test stuff out on your phone. Absolute worst case, you hard reset it and try again.

      @@JPepperL Fair enough, if you need a place to get started try the Europe '72 live shows and the Skulls and Roses live shows. If you need some later stuff, summer and fall of '89 are smokers, and spring and summer of '90 are also phenomenal. If you need earlier stuff, Feb '68 is true primal Dead. '77 is also a fantastic year- pretty much everything. If you start listening, and you enjoy it, you just won't be able to stop.

    This phone thing isn’t you being disciplined, it’s you living and being stuck in the past. It’s evident through you old world you still play on. Love for VHS tapes and them being your only source of movies, and you getting a flip phone, this has nothing to do with being on your smartphone but your never going to adapt if you continue living 10-15 years being everybody

    • @JPepperL
      @JPepperL  8 месяцев назад

      To be fair, I pretty much made the point that I have a lack of discipline and that getting rid of the phone is only a band aid fix for a bigger problem with my mindset. I live in the present when it comes to the important things but for video games and media and what not, I prefer it this way. If the time comes where I absolutely need a smart phone for something, I'll get a smartphone.
