Next of Kin: The Best 80s Action Movie You Never Saw?

  • While everyone remembers Road House, which, despite underperforming in 1989, became a massive cult classic, it wasn’t the only action flick Patrick Swayze made that year. Towards the end of 1989, he starred in another action movie called Next of Kin. While largely obscure in his filmography, it’s a better-than-average thriller anchored by Swayze’s charisma and a scene-stealing turn by a young Liam Neeson, who’s practically a co-lead here - and it’s a pick of ours for The Best Movie You Never Saw.

Both Roadhouse & Next of Kin are the most underrated Patrick Swayze movies of 1989. Whilst Roadhouse is now fondly remembered, Next of Kin is largely forgotten. All the relationship between Swayze & Liam Neeson as the 2 older brothers of Bill Paxton is Solid. Neeson gives as good as he gets.

Like Road House, I think this film ( Next of Kin ) is pretty equal in action & mood. Its one of my favorite, of Patrick Swayze's movies.

Some fun bits of trivia from a native to eastern Kentucky, one county over from where they filmed this. I knew the store owner who did some of the deliveries while the film crews were in town. One of my best friend's uncles was actually in the film in a quick little cameo (the mountain man during the train ride). And finally, apparently this movie gave something of a reputation to men from Kentucky, at least my area of the state, to some people up north in Indiana; I went to visit my friend (he and his brothers were living and working in the factories up there at the time), and a bunch of his co-workers had it in their heads we were going to be hunting someone down for doing some wrong on the family.

I found it hard to believe that Patrick Swayze never became an action hero.
I mean, with Road House, Point Break and Next of Kin under his belt, I definitely could see him give Stallone, Segal and Schwarzenegger a run for their money.

To me, Swayze WAS an action hero. How many fight scenes do you need in a movie? Swayze also had a GREAT body. He was sexy without being a jerk - which made him even more sexy.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned that Don Swayze, Patrick's brother got his start in acting in this movie?
He doesn't have a lot of roles but, he's gotten work in the years following this film.
And yes, obviously, he plays a member of the large family clan set on revenge for Bill Paxton's murder.

Jack Nitzsche whose score was good - but he was fired towards the end makes audiences anxious. It was also not a good choice
for Revenge which he also got fired three times from the 107-minute flick for Sony Pictures Entertainment, StudioCanal,
The Samuel Goldwyn Company, Lakeshore Entertainment, RKO Radio Pictures, Halcyon Studios, TIG Enterprises & Scott Free...
but he came for one last time with both final scores: Mermaids at Sony Pictures Studios in 1991 and The Crossing Guard at
Paramount Studios in 1997 and after that, they're won't be any more offers for the Oscar winning composer. These are the
last sessions. Jack Nitzsche died in 2001 and survived by his second wife, Buffy and their children.
