Replacing Sunlight with SOFT Light in outdoor portrait photography
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- Portrait photography outdoors in bright sunlight can still have soft lighting and shadows with this approach. Simply using a white umbrella isn't that great because the background will be overexposed. Wedding photography and outdoor portrait photographers will love this DIY trick using both white umbrella and silver umbrella with a small strobe. The size and power of the strobe depends on the distance between umbrella to subject and what type of photography umbrella. Personally, I like the silver umbrella more. I explain why in this video.

You don’t get the credit you deserve. I’ve been following you for a while and I appreciate your real world demonstrations. Thank you and please keep sharing. Excellent video.
You know how the algo works, the algo just want to push people that promote every company product as good not matter if bad. Real people hardly get the credit they deserve.
That's really fresh kind of lighting using the white umbrella. It gives off like fresh summer vibe
There are countless instances that I've sacrificed the background to get the right light on my subject. Thanks for the tips.
Silver umbrella gives more image detail 👍
You got great effect. Thanks for sharing with us.
That silver was WAY better than expected from my experiences. Thanks Markus !
I absolutely love your channel. It’s the best. Simple and effective advice. No filler. And you have a great personality. Thank you so much for your efforts. 🤌🏽
Always like your way of explaning tech tips. Always find them useful.
Glad you like them!
Damn, now I want to get a silver umbrella! Thanks, Markus! I really liked the images the silver umbrella produced. The white umbrella had no contrast and to me looked unnatural. I also like the AD100. I used 2, in manual mode, for the first time out on the course capturing a trail run. The small size made them perfect for hiding behind a rock and the batteries easily lasted for the 7 hours I was out there. Not as quick recycling time as the Quantum Trio I normally use, but they sure do take up less space in my backpack and much easier to set up!
Yes I love the AD100s!
Great info, and yes, it made her pop.
Agreed. The white umbrella lighting was blah! You two make such a cute couple!
You rock dude. Keep up the good work.
The intro is funny😂 that is how I feel about a flashlight 🙈😂
Hwo's the man? Markus is the man!
Love the energy of both of you, and appreciate your videos!
Great. As always!
Thanks for this one Markus! That comparison of the white and silver umbrella looks was super useful. LOVE the look of the silver one!!
This tip is CRAZY! I never would have thought of this. Absolute gold. Thank you so much! God bless!
Cara is so cool! Very playful! Great video, both of you!
Very cool. Thank you Markus for sharing all your knowledge, tips, tricks. Always a good time.
I am excited to watch your next video, seeing the location, gear and camera you are shooting with. Just great fun. As always, great seeing the both of you. Blessings from Florida.
Great video. Great information, something I need to try. It's nice to see how to work in full sun. Love Cara in the background having fun.
These educational videos are made to be easily understood and it has helped me so much to learn more about photography.
Dropping gems as usual 👍 thank you for sharing your wisdom for all
Excellent knowledge dispensed to the masses again. Thank you.
Agreed, the silver umbrella is a better look!
I think I over complicate my photo sessions, I will try this technique on my next beach photoshoot. I did follow your previous strobe recommendation and I am happy with the little simple AD100
AMAZING THANKS!!!
You are a genius with lighting!
Thank you for a such useful video!
I love these "1 minute manager" type of photography instruction streams. They are helpful and entertaining so they sink in. And of course having Cara in them is just bonus! What a character she is. Blessings. Carry on. LOL
Magic! Love you guys! 🇬🇧
Another great video with clear instructions and explanations - you're doing wonderful work and I really appreciate it! Greetings from Vienna
great vid thx Markus
Thank you, as always, Markus
Hi Markus, dank dir wiedermal, you are my favorite photo guru, servus und alles Liebe aus der alten Heimat.
Keep it simple. Keep it real. Keep it up!
This is a very cool tip! New to me for sure, I would have been trying to use a reflector to knock out shadows. I like this!
Spot on. Great points!
Great lession. Speed shutter and more settings ?

Love the cartoon intro too 😃🎉
That is so DOPE!!!! Holly cow!!!
Interesting. We always use white, like the silver look better. Thanks
Perfect photos, thank you so much for great video
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Excellent technique 👍
beautifully explained Markus... no nonsense, pure sense on how to use the equipment without any hassle and headache... just one question though... how in the world is your age 60, but have a look of a 40 year old, and the energy of a 30 year old???😁
I do what I love
@@MarkusPix and also please do some more of your miniature stuff... i love those videos
Philippines, Yes.❤🎉
For some reason, I couldn’t see the umbrella
Thanks Markus! I’m pretty sure your last comment isn’t right though about front diffusion umbrellas letting through less light than a bounce umbrella. Intuitively that makes sense, but from my testing you lose some in the bounce and actually a shoot through let’s through more light.
Would love for you to verify, maybe there was something wrong with my testing.
Test it outdoors, not inside where it can bounce off walls! Half the light bounces backwards off the white surface and half goes through. Diffusion always eats up a couple stops no matter what. Reflectors reflect the light and let none through
@@MarkusPix gotcha thanks! Yes I shoot indoors that makes sense that would be the difference. I’ll keep that in mind for outdoor shoots. Thanks again for all you do!
What do you think of gold umbrellas, Markus?
I used to like gold reflectors but it makes the face totally orange and can't be changed. At least the color can be changed when using silver
markus again for the WIN, he is a national treasure to be protected at all costs(&cara of course too)!!! 🤌👌😇
👍
✌...
Great video! Very relevant for me since I have recently started filming myself outside a lot. What would you recommend for filming in sunlight, rather than photography?

@@MarkusPix thank you!
Do you have any tips to make flattering light with real small modifiers or no modifier at all in environment where you can't really bounce it, and you want to fit all gear needed on 1 backpack including stands?
I know it's very specific and rather challenging, I have been looking into this for a while, but I'm not really fond of end results so far, so maaaybe you would have something on it :D
So far I did manage to fit in 2 stands with 50CM umbrellas (not very flattering) camera few lenses etc into backpack, and was avoiding bigger modifiers because I have way less luck finding decent rock nearby to hold stands for me, and already killed few speedlights xD
My channel is FULL of the smallest portable gear possible ruclips.net/video/7HYD9r1ZeAs/видео.html
and ruclips.net/video/TS4dyp6Hm04/видео.html
and ruclips.net/video/5bJQVHnH2po/видео.html
etc etc etc
@@MarkusPix Yea I got idea for my light stands from your videos, got slightly different gear but the idea stands mostly the same.
Seems like I'm too picky about specular highlights, like I like the effect in your photos, but not in my kind of thing.
Might change camera though from FF to APS-c though, I was considering it for quite a while, A7III is cool and all but it's bulky, and it will be strange but I like it less than my old A7 1'st gen for some reason.
Well anyway, thanks lots for responding, keep making cool videos :D
TY.
YW.
None of photographer talk about this, thx
Markus, you really need to be at a university teaching your skills to these young kids in college. Just saying.
I agree, and I’m a photographer who does around 120 weddings a year….
That would make me feel old!
@@MarkusPix but your wise brother, unlike most punks on RUclips, you DO know what you’re talking about
@@MarkusPix- no but you would have the Severus Snape experience.... a lot of first years... dundheads... transform them to next gen of light wizzards...😂🤣😂🤣
This is the new university. He reaches more people here!

I thought I would never use this cheap white umbrella again
Using umbrellas is such a cheap thrill its better than sugar
Very informative. Thanks!
Your model looks like she's up to something. Be careful.
Why do all the "VIDEO Experts" need giant diffusion panels to get the same look? Thanks for keeping it simple and reminding people that there are simple less expansive options, like umbrellas.
Another discovery made, another lesson to learn! It's a lot of fun without any pretentious 'expertise'.
I love umbrellas because they throw back the ambient light on top of whatever your flash puts out.
You two should host a shooting out weekend. Paid corse for those who are interested in meeting you in person and learning simple techniques you like using in your daily shoots. Video and Photography.
Be worth it for a $700 each for a campout weekend. If you supplied foods and tents, maybe $2400.
Finally i see you again, my yt algorithm hide you, and I've been looking were was your channel pg!!!
Really great video .. thanks for this. As a relative newbie at this, it really does show what can be done with some basic equipment.
Love your videos Markus.
You are one lucky man as well. .kudos to you sir .
Such a cool way to get a great look, without the sun squinty eyes!!
Fantastic video keep it up, I now in this day in age every thing needs to be fast and snappy stupid simple , I personally wouldn't mind that your videos would be longer and more relaxed. Still love you work and what you do thanks so much. Much appreciated.
Welp, I learned something new today, and it’s something I would’ve never thought of myself. Danke schön, amigo!
No problem!
Love this video. You always provide really useful info and techniques. Thanks !!!
I also build up equipment with smaller portable speedlights, so I appreciate these little tips. I also like the professional attitude you have. ^_^
You were shot at 3:46! haha
thank you for uploading... you're an inspiration
❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Thank you. This really helped me a lot.
Great tips. Thank you!
gold tips. Thank you Markus
Hi Markus! Long time fan, first time commenter: I love and appreciate your insights into cinematic lighting techniques and budget photography. One thing intrigues me: how did you get such clean sound without wearing a mike that could be seen?
Thanks so much, keep up these awesome videos!

Color temps are the only thing left out of the discussion. Direct sunlight is warmer than the shade lighting temps that speedlights put out. Some experimentation with warming filters on the flash before going to location may be required.
My ad100 is so good. I never use HSS. A vnd works well in bright sun and the power is fine.
Why does your model look so cold in the sunlight?
Could it be the umbrella?
What I like is they it is only 1 strobe.
i tried this yesterday and today at midday and even though the light is bouncing everywhere using an umbrella i’m still using low power and can expose properly my subject and background. ad100 pro and umbrella is perfect in shooting anytime of the day. i used nisi true color nd cause like markus i don’t like hss.
Hey markk , thanks for your great videos, actually this time I see that the sun is coming from sideways, it is complete different when it hit straight down at 12 or 1pm where sometime the false eyelashes reflex its shadows in the faces, can you do a tutorial with an example I mentioned?, I'll appreciate it, it happen to me a lot and always struggle fight with the situation.Thank you
When shooting on sunny days, I’m always looking for shade. Sometimes you have no choice but to shoot in raw sunlight. I could have used this trick years ago.
great tutorial and tips! may I ask your settings for this? Thank you.
love the idea!!
Looks the weather was a bit nipply, sorry nippely, sorry nippy…😂

Wait... Cara in normal cloths!?!? ;-)
That’s a very nice tip! Thanks! 😊
Many, many thanks for your help
Wouldn't a gold umbrella be ideal?
nice!
