  • south park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone went through a few legal battles before purchasing the restaurant with a group that had a deep fondness for the restaurant and didn't want the place to become a south park joke. They also had to deal with nightmare renovations after the restaurant was finally purchased and south park studios had to contact the owner directly for the episode Casa Bonita to be a South Park episode

Eh, they technically had the right to file an objection since their offer was first and higher, but was rejected. It could indicate unfair business practices or collusion between Matt and Trey and Casa Bonita. But since they probably didn't actually have the money, it wouldn't have gone anywhere

we’re not talking about you selling your home or car or whatever personal belonging…this is a sale in the midst of the parent company filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy, which changes everything. you think if i own my own company and then file for bankruptcy with millions in debt i can just ignore a valid offer made for my company and assets and just say ‘yep i have the right to sell this company to this random guy who may or may not be associated with me for an arbitrary amount less than the other offer i got.” and not get immediately investigated for collusion? in the end, it was almost certainly the lack of proof of funds that merited the motion to be dismissed entirely. the owner of the business at this point doesnt get to pick and choose who to sell it to, and certainly doesnt get any sort of influence over the many creditors that need to be paid back.

    • @jkyle1018

@MoistOwlet It's not Chase Bank, it's a Mexican restaurant. The owners should be able to choose. Especially when one offer is cash on hand and the other is a dodgy consortium.

I think the reason Matt and Trey bought Casa Bonita was because of actual love and admiration. It's not for a "south park joke", even in the episode they put high regard and respect for the place. Plus I'm sure Matt and Trey as kids went and loved the place.

Heck they even said there when they called the team who thought they were just going to rip on the resturaunt they only wanted to use it out of respect and yeah if you see the episode it's clear the point is "Casa Bonita is this really great place thus why Cartman is so desperate just to spend time there."

11 years ago I changed careers and started driving trucks over the road. My trainer was from Denver and i'm from Florida. He was planning to stop for a few hours and see some friends and asked what i wanted to do with my downtime instead of hanging out in the back of the truck. He started naming stuff around Denver to do. When he mentioned 'Casa Bonita' my eyes about popped out of my head! I started describe all the stuff from the South Park episode and he said, "oh you've been there?" I said, "no, I saw it on South Park! That's a real place?!?!" Needless to say there was a 30 something grown ass man wandering a kids restaurant taking pictures like a complete dork! Was pretty cool. And the food wasn't bad by trucking standards....lol...

    • @AzraelThanatos
      @AzraelThanatos Год назад +6

From what I've heard from family in the area is that the food wasn't that bad until near the end there. The menu was more of the older semi-mexican stuff you would see and hadn't really changed...and then the owners seemed to realize that the time was getting close to the end and started cutting corners there. I'd kind of wanted to go there back in the mid-90's when my family went out there, but my parents didn't want to take the time despite hearing a lot about it from my cousins who had been disappointed by ChiChi's when they came east for things compared to Casa Bonita.

I was in high school when the Casa Bonita episode came out, but I didn't watch the show at the time. I had moved to Virginia a few years before from Colorado. I showed up in gym class a day or two after it aired, and one of the kids I hung out with in that class was singing Cartman's Casa Bonita song. I asked him if he had ever been there, and he laughed at me and said it wasn't real. I was so confused. I told him that Casa Bonita was real and that I had been there several times. He told me I was lying. Well, I happened to be going to Colorado for spring break, so I got my parents to take us to Casa Bonita and I took a bunch of pictures. When I came back the kid asked me if I went to Casa Bonita, and I told him I did and showed him a picture of the front of the building. He told me that was fake I pulled off the internet, then I showed him the same picture with me standing in front of the fountain. Then the cliff divers. Then the gorilla. Then the arcade. Then Black Bart's cave. Then the jail photo op.
      Then he shut up.
This did get me to start watching South Park, though. I had no idea it was set in Colorado, and I'm glad I did because this was during the golden era of South Park and I got to watch it all as it came out. There are so many jokes in this show that are meant for people in Colorado that most people will never get lol.

I returned in 2015 and it was still a cool place, but the quality of the food had declined substantially (like mediocre Mexican-style cafeteria food) and the price had skyrocketed to $20-$25/person. It wasn’t sustainable.

Skip ahead like 30years, and he and my mom own a ranch in the REAL south park, Colorado (park county, fairplay area) and he has no idea about much of this. Black Bart's Cave. Cliff-divers and a show every 15 minutes. Putting your order on a metal stick or turning a green sign red or something to symbol "more food plz." The whole place was a trip. Most old restaurants defer rennovations until the building is at best gutted if not completely razed. Casa Bonita likely got more liberties where a normal landlord would have lost their shit. A trick to handcuff a landlord is to make such modifications to the site that it is prohibitively expensive to get them out.
During the pandemic Cheesecake Factory used the fact that losing their business and converting the sites for other use was such an expense that they simply refused to pay rent at any of their restaurants.

I once got a temporary gig at a small restaurant, but it turned out the chef was leaving abruptly, and they decided to give me the job. My first week, I started a deep clean. The floor appeared to be a dirt floor, or maybe dirty concrete. I started picking at a corner, and found a perfectly good foodservice tile floor under about half an inch of grease, dirt and debris. I stayed in all night chiseling it up and scrubbing the tile. The owner was really confused when he came in the next day and suddenly there was an orange tile floor when before it looked like the ground next to a commercial grease disposal bin.

This was one my first jobs about 14 years ago, the security computer had a screen shot of the building from south park as it's wallpaper. The people who worked there were awesome. One time a friend of mine said he knew a guy in the kitchen and he could get us free fried ice-cream but, we had to abandon our posts and go now to get it. So we get to the kitchen and get our ice-cream, I look up and see my manger giving me a dead stare from across the kitchen. So my friend just leans over and whispers "run." We go running through the kitchen and down into the caves on the lower level. We found a spot to hide enjoyed our fried ice-cream and returned to work to get our write-ups. That place was an awesome job, with awesome managers. Great place to work as a kid.
P.S. The theater was always rumored to be haunted. We would turn the lights off at the end of the night sometimes and wonder around with flashlights trying to find ghosts or just get each other spooked. I would be curious to know if any of the construction workers had felt any spooky vibes.

I am apparently the only person that loved the food. I remember when it cost $12 per adult and you could get a dive view based on luck. They had glow sticks that would last for months if you put in freezer in between. Im pretty sure they were radioactive or something as today's glow sticks are a joke in comparison.

I grew up going to the Casa Bonita in Little Rock. That was my favorite place growing up. I still remember raising the little flag that told the wait staff that you needed more tacos. Every kid got to go to the treasure cave and get a prize. There were mariachis wandering around the restaurant. Everyone was devastated when they went under and the iconic restaurant was torn down. I still get a little sad when driving down University and passing where it was.

They didn’t have anyone inspect the building before bidding 3.1 Million!? It’s a piece of crap, inside of a trashy old strip mall. They’ll never recoup 15 Million!!

Imagine just picking the hair out of a shower drain and stapling it to your head and thinking "This looks great. Time to go out into public."

It's super rare for a business to care about the business remaining in shape unless it's making a lot of money, coasting by places will fight to do any sort of maintenance and some expect the workers to be able to part time as a freelance mechanic/cleaner.

I used to live SMACK Behind Casa Bonita. I have many memories in that parking lot alone. Let alone inside of it. Been there many times, and the food? Its so bad. Soooo bad. Its crazy that as long as you build a crazy dining experience, that people will come. No matter the food quality. And that place was always PACKED

We had a French student come and stay with us during the summer of 2011. He was talking to my son and asked if he liked South Park. My son loved it and they started talking about the show. The French kid said he wished there was a real Casa Bonita and I swear he almost had heart attack when he found out it was real. We took him and he had a blast!

this "Save Casa Bonita" weirdo acts like he's the only one who loves the place, but you can see that Trey and Matt love Casa Bonita too, they're just not obsessed to the degree he is, which i'd argue is a good thing, because that means that they can make changes for the good of the restaurant, while he would just end up letting it fall apart rather than change what made it fail to begin with.

I grew up in Thornton CO. In the 80’s. Went went a few times a year. It was the most anticipated trip of the year. It’s an institution for us 80’s kids.
