@Silver Mont I was playing d3 today and notice that artorias armor is that of the silver knights it's just carodid by the abbyss. I think you should look into this because all the other knights have their own armor but arts is just modified a bit. I think he might have been one of the best out of the silver knights and made it to the rank of the four but just in place a soough. I think maybe even though he was strong he wasn't as strong. Why I think this is because they all including smough have a title in their name but arts ony gains his title abbyss Walker from the aftermath. Which might mean his armor suggests he is strong. But maybe wasn't the strongest and went to the temptation of the abbyys to gain power to prove his rank among the four. And is why sough might not like ornstien because orn is the leader and saw sough as more of a tool and not a Noble knight even though he was stronger then artorias idk you should look into the armor thing though it's making me think there has to be a reason why his armor is not signature and just modified silver knights armor.
Ornstein and Smough, upon their allies death... Ornstein- Smough... although we butted heads on many occasions, and you were without a speck of honor, I always respected your skills as a warrior... rest in peace, my comrade. Smough- *smashes Ornstein into the dirt* YO POWA MINE NOW, BITCH.
Keep in mind you never verse any of these lords/op character at their fullest strength. They would demolish you! Gywn from lord of sunlight to lord of cinder-easy. Bed of chaos ember weakness-easy. Gravelord nito asleep In a coffin;dead- easy
+Farhad Zaidi Gwyn wasn't even the lord of embers when we finally meet him, by this point he'd already split his soul into at least five different pieces, given four away to the four kings and the one remaining fragment still clinging on inside his body had been burning for centuries into steady nothingness. By the time we fight Gwyn, he's a husk of a shadow, barely alive and a tiny fraction of the person he once was. And still when we kill him, the tattered remains of his splintered, faded soul, still possess the same strength as any other lord soul.
Well all of the unique souls in the game possess the same air of individuality, for instance it can be used to create a unique weapon, unlike the simple generic souls. If it doesn't possess the strength of a lord soul, it at least possesses an incredible strength equal to any of the great souls you find in the game. Also I neglected to mention that Gwyns soul was split even further amongst his knights.
I think the soul fragments you get from Seath and the 2.5 kings are fragments of Gwyn's Lord Soul found within the first flame, aren't they? At any rate, let's tally up who all in all got a piece of the thing. Gwyn's children, his knights, Seath and the 3.14 kings all got a fragment. Gwyndolin, Gwynevere, presumably Solaire, Ornstein, Artorias, Ciaran, Gough, Seath, and the four queens got one collectively. That would mean 9 parts of the whole. What I find curious is that only two fragments is enough to satisfy the Lord Vessel.
This is a Dark Souls video, not a Dark Souls II video. Do NOT post any spoilers from Dark Souls II here. If you do, I'll ban you. Please, respect the wishes of others - don't be a jerk.
My two thoughts on the Ornstein and Smough relationship: From what I can tell, you are right in the aspect that Smough is no doubt jealous and envious of Ornstein's rank and ability, and only bothers not to kill Ornstein earlier cause, well, Ornstein is a badass, and only kills him because he is vulnerable. Whereas, I believe Ornstein stays with Smough not really out of respect, but more because he is waiting, or hoping that Smough can get past his murderous and bloodthirsty nature, and realize his potential as a great knight, and maybe join him among the four. Thus when all others gave up on Smough, Ornstein stayed with him and had faith in him. Seeing the great knight within him and perhaps Ornstein even tried to teach Smough to turn from his vile ways, obviously failing.
***** good theory it was exactly the same as mine too and have you noticed that ornstein's death animation is similar to gwynevere's like a ghost fading away?
The reason Smough finishes off Ornstein could possibly actually be out of respect for him. It could be that, since Ornstein vastly outranks Smough, Smough thinks that it would preserve his betters honour by taking his life, rather then letting some undead do it instead.
Except Smough laughs and relishes in the death of Ornstein whcih may suggest he holds disdain for him and resents him for not allowing him to join the knights of Gwyn.
Better honor? What better honor would there be than falling to the Chosen Undead? Think what you will of the character but they are an unknown legend in the making.
+Xzener It's Fuckwad and Bitchass! Death and Taxes! Pain and Suffering! Mario and Luigi! Pikachu and Snorlax! Kyle and Cartman! Milk and Cookies! Putin and Medvedev! Ford and Chevy! Sonic and Knuckles! Thunder and Thighs! Sisket and Ebert! Simon and Garfunkel! The Super Londo Bros!
Welcome to a new episode of Shipping Souls, we have today Dragonslayer Orenstien + Executioner Smough. The reason Smough crushes Orenstien before turning into Super Smough is because he hates to see his lover in pain, and Orenstien places his hand on Smough before turning into Super Orenstien is because he knew that was the last time he would see his lover and was holding in tears. That concludes our episode of Shipping Souls, next time we see me never posting a comment like this again :)
I have a theory that Smough and Ornstain were best friends and went on a picnic but a dragon came and Ornstain came to slay it but Smough ate Ornstain's sandwich while he was fighting the dragon and when Ornstain killed the dragon he realized his sandwich was missing and got angry at Smough, which means that Ornstain didn't invite him as a member of the super Saiyan 4 knights dragon slayers that makes dragon born look like a moldy vagina. Years passed on a creature known as justin bieber used a machine to travel to the dark souls world and set up a concert, he sang in front of seath which is why he's scaleless, but his friend dragons liked justin bieber which was why he betrayed them all, Justin bieber started to sing but then Smough came in and crushed him with his hammer which made Ornstain happy and gave Smough the job as an executioner and Smough was happy and celebrated with Justin Bieber Rib bones. The reason Smough crushes Ornstain was because he was going to be reincarnated in the form of justin bieber so Smough had no choice but to kill Ornstain. So what do you all think of my theory?
Basically with Justin bieber defeated there then came Miley Cyrus who recently had sex with Frampt which is why he looks like he's on meth. Miley Cyrus was defeated by the Mirror Knight when she was going to crush the world with her ass, the Mirror Knight saved the world but he is now stuck with that image in his head As for the old Dragonslayer, years have passed and Lil Wayne built Dragonslayer Ornstain again to review his rapping,Ornstain puked on him but then once Lil Wayne sung one word Ornstain fell unconscious but was Reincarnated as Miley Cyrus, Lil Wayne killed himself by walking into a wall and the Miley Cyrus reincarnation was waiting for the chosen undead to come so that she could spread her ass around his face and destroy him.
I feel like Ornstein's job is to be the final test of sorts for the Chosen Undead. In a "if you can't beat me, you don't stand a chance against the bearers of the Lord Souls" kind of way, you know? And then of course Smough gets added to that. As for Ornstein and Artorias, it's interesting and I view it like this as to why Ornstein is the leader despite Artorias coming off as the most renowned and legendary. Artorias is without question the ideal image of The Knight in Dark Souls. Honorable, steel-willed, self-sacrificial, with unmatched skill in combat. But he's also a lone wolf, as his animal theme represents. Ornstein is the proudest and greatest in sheer power. His theme is the lion, the definition of pride and kingliness. He seems to be closest to Gwyn personally since they share the same lightning theme and golden color. Artorias is self-sacrificing and honorable, a hero of the people. Ornstein is utterly loyal and dutiful to Gwyn's will alone and takes pride in that unwavering loyalty, the ideal General of his Lord's forces. In that way, I don't think Ornstein for a moment thought twice about fighting alongside Smough. He's very professional and takes his job seriously with no second thoughts for honor or fairness. All that matters is serving his Lord's will, which in this case is tied to the trials of the Chosen Undead to ensure their ability to accomplish the task at hand.
I just recently got into dark souls about two weeks ago and I'm addicted. I think it's my favorite game now. And these make me love it even more. Thanks!
Uber Artorias riding Sif whilst shooting Goughs bow shooting Ornstein's spears as arrows poisoned with Ciaran's poison along with having her stealth Sounds like insta-death on steroids Pardon misspells(if any)
I would put Ornstein at #2. Gravelord Nito: Pushover boss, but possibly the coolest video game character design ever (and I am aware that it's a simple idea--SKULLS EVERYWHERE--but it fucking works).
I like to think that it was Ornstein's weakness to fire that made him the best Dragonslayer. He knew that one heatwave would kill him, so he always did his best to avoid it and finish off the dragon as fast as possible. Smough is hardly equipped to fight any dragons. The dragons had mighty stone scales, a hammer, that spreads the force over a big area, wouldnt break anything. Ornsteins spear makes use of the gaps that Gwyn's lightning bolts created. Also, I dont think they fought dishonorable. Their duty was to guard Gwynevere, not to have sparing duels with traspassers.
+red toasti thats a fun idea, that ornstein saw the thrill in hunting his own biggest threat. Or perhaps he wanted the closure of removing the threats himself so that there was no beast he needed fear. Thrill or fear, what was his motivation? certainly an interesting concept either way.
Oh dear, now I'm just thinking of Sean Connery: "Welcome to Ana Lando, Chhhhoshen undead. If you sheek the Lardvesshel, first you musht overcome me - Dragonshlayer Ornshtine Connery and my companion, Shmo."
Nathanael McIlwain he is. Super Ornstein you can stay close to for longer and dodge better, whereas Super Smough does more attacks you have to move away from him for in order to not die.
I have a theory that intertwines with Ornstein and Smough. Gwyndolin wanted the Chosen Undead to win and get the Lordvessel to succeed Gwyn and renew the age of fire. This would end with Gwyn dying. The fight starts with Smough waiting for you and Ornstein leaping from high up. The upper area has Gwynevere and a passage to Gwyndolin's lair. So that would mean Ornstein was probably just speaking to one of them. He would have to hear of the plan and it would involve letting him walk by and take the Lordvessel. Ornstein being very loyal to Lord Gwyn doesn't like this. So he has the Silver Knights and Sentinels attack you because he doesn't want Gwyn to die. Ornstein like most probably hated Smough for his cruelty, but bribed him by saying he'll put in a good word to Gwyndolin so Smough would take Astorias' or Ciaran's vacant positions on the 4 Knights. Smough wanting this took the offer, but was still distrusting of Ornstein due to a possible grudge. Ornstein seemed to hold a decent amount of respect for him as a warrior because he put the trust into him to fight against the Chosen Undead with him and when Smough dies Ornstein prays at his body. When Ornstein is killed I see it as him either getting revenge over a grudge or trying to secure himself a position. With the power absorption it's probably like consuming souls, except they're taking right from the body and not crushing the soul. For his commanding position I'd say he was more of a leader. Astorias was passed of Guts from Berserk. While Guts was the strongest member of the Band of the Hawk he wasn't the leader. Griffith was smarter, a better strategist, and more people looked up to him. Ornstein was probably more known and respected for his dragon slaying in the war against the dragons and that made him leader. Astorias probably gained his fame later when he learned the skill of Abysswalking. I think he knew about Gwynevere being a fake because I think he'd know if his Lord's beloved daughter was married to the Fire God and away from Anor Londo. In my other theory about the Old Dragonslayer I explain some other stuff about his death and all that.
Did you also notice that the serpent at Firelink Shrine gives you only 1 Soul if you sell him Smoughs Soul, whereas with other souls he gives yopu a normal amount
I was stuck on these two for a few days, because I couldn't summon Sunbro. Then I fought Lautrec and got FIVE WHOLE HUMANITY! I was able to summon Solaire and beat them after that. The moral of the story? Sunbros don't get stuck on bosses.
+TROLL ALPACKA Well it is when you: 1. Have none 2. Are going through the game for the first time and, therefore, more susceptible to dying due to not knowing what's next.
What if Ornstein and Smough were brothers? Ornstein is the honorable overachieving one and Smough is the one trying to get attention by getting in trouble and being cruel?
What is it that Gough says? "What good is a hound, with no hares to hunt?" Something like that... it sums up the lot of them, I think. Artorias is the only one who manages to die doing something useful, he's the only one with a 'legend' that we know of - the rest seem to have mostly faded into obscurity.
Ornstein is probably weak against fire and resistant against lightning because he fought Wyverns more than anything else. If you look at the dragon heads in his trophe room, you'll see that most of them are of the Wyverns that we encounter on the Valley of Drakes, which shoot lightning instead of fire. There aren't any dragons that shoot fire except for the Hellkite, now that I think about it. The Wyverns shoot lightning, Kalameet shoots dark magic, Seath shoots soul magic, the Undead Dragons shoot toxin, Gaping pukes and the Stone Dragon doesn't attack us.
The relationship between the two is so interesting, Smough is jealous of Ornstein and resents him for not letting him join the four Knights, so when he finally,y gets the opportunity and a proper excuse, he kills Ornstein himself, through what is assumed to be him taking out himself dwelling in rage. Not that Smough would have killed Ornstein on his own, he just needed an excuse to do so.
I honestly think that they're both illusions - I'd go into why, but some details would probably count as DS2 spoilers, and I don't know what your policy on that is these days. Now, I think one of the most important things to point out that everyone seems to overlook is: Smough's soul is the *only* boss soul in the game that Frampt will only pay you *1* soul for, should you feed it to him. Unless this was meant to hint at the true nature of Smough, who's soul is by far and large the one most players are most likely to pick up, given how killing Ornstein first is generally considered the easiest strategy, then it doesn't make any sense. There is no gameplay reason for why Smough's soul would be worthless compared to any boss with a soul, unless perhaps his soul isn't real. I'd actually go so far as to say that the canon of this fight depends on who you kill first. If you kill Smough first, Ornstein is empowered and he will drop his real soul, and both of them are real. On the other hand, if you kill Ornstein first and Smough is empowered, but the lacking value of his soul is proof that it's a fake, and they're both illusions. Another interpretation could of course be that Smough doesn't have a special, unique soul the way that Ornstein does. Ornstein's special soul was granted to him by Gwyn, and it could be that Smough *deliberately* delivers the killing blow to Ornstein, but not necessarily out of spite - At least not towards him - but to outright steal the kill from the player, and thus also steal Ornstein's soul before you can get your hands on it. Smough immediately makes use of Ornstein's soul as it empowers him with Ornstein's affinity for lightning, and when the player finally kills Smough the soul has basically 'adapted' and changed to being Smough's soul rather than Ornstein's. The lore behind the way some smiths can craft boss-soul weapons would seem to suggest that the keeper of a soul basically 'imprint' it with their traits, and thus the weapons and spells created from souls are a sort of objectified reincarnation of them. So now that Smough has taken hold of the soul he has instantly molded it to suit him and empower his hammer, thus the soul will become the hammer rather than the spear. The biggest issue with this theory however is the fact that this wouldn't explain why Smough's soul is considered worthless by Frampt.
I like your theory and I think that to back up the last part whereas you said that the issue with it is why Smough’s soul is only worth 1 soul to Frampt is possibly because he only used it to boost the weapon, not himself, instead of making himself faster with the soul, he used it to add lightning to his weapon, meaning that all the magic and power effectively absorbed into the weapon and because it had no affect on Smough himself made his soul less valuable. Ornstein at least got bigger when he absorbed Smough’s soul which effectively made his own soul far more powerful. Edit: Besides why else would the number 1 boss on this list want the dark soul so bad, because it has absorbed so much power...
Oh, it comes from an old character I played in RPGs called Montciel. He started as a Paladin who wore silver armour and was referred to as 'The Silver Mont' - the more you know! He's also a character in a lil' novel I published and my go-to character to make when games... let you make characters.
What if Smough actually respected Ornstein and Ornstein respected Smough (That's why he lays his hand on him if you kill Smough first) and Smough crushes Ornstein to put him out of his misery? Just a theory but I still agree with the jealousy theory.
I don't know, I can't help but feel that Smough looked up to Ornstein. In the bygone age, Smough was too cruel to be accepted as one of the knights, but in an age of ruin, when strong allies are far between, Ornstein has no qualms about fighting alongside Smough. Sure, Smough crushes the life out of the dying Ornstein, but I feel this is just part of their pact to defend the cathedral. Ornstein and Smough, if one goes down, the other absorbs his power to maintain an edge in the fight after losing his ally. Smough crushes downed Ornstein because this is his nature, and Ornstein reverantly lays a hand on Smough because that is Ornstein's nature.
Thanks! And yeah, I'm a little late to the game - I only got a capture card back in Feb, and I only recently decided to concentrate more on making videos. Still, been playing Dark Souls since launch, and all this is good practice for when Dark Souls 2 comes out, you know? I plan to cover the hell outta that game, haha!
7:40 Well, you could say that the hatred was mutual probably, everyone thinks that placing a hand on his chest was his way of saying 'Goodbye', but maybe just like Smough finishes off Orsntein, Ornstein steals Smough's soul, just that it is less brutal.
It's possible, of course. Although I believe Smough was already "dead" or dying at that point, and Ornstein merely took his power, so to speak. Whereas we see Ornstein still moving, if ever so slightly.
I don't care about what anyone else says but, ornstein is my favorite character because even though qwyn is "dead" and anor londo has gone to shit, ornstein is still loyal to something that died out years ago... :"(
Meaning that Ornstein is some kind of a Grand General reduced to a Watchdog Protecting some kind of a Fake Treasure. I never thought that Ornstein is that sad.
Ornstein isn't too weak against fire (he's actually weaker against magic). Though this does make sense in some weird way: If your armor isn't optimised against your enemy, you have to rely more on your skill. This fits well with his agile fighting style and his weapon (which allows him to keep as much distance to dragons and their fire as it is possible with a melee weapon). He also isn't a stranger to ranged attacks if he has to.
EvilDoresh The dragons shown in the intro don't seem to use fire either, infact it's the humans that 'find' the fire and it's the witches of izalith that use fire as first.
EvilDoresh even kalameet his fire seems more like magic then actaul fire (it's black). That said I am guessing that different dragons had different powers
My thoughts on the Ornstein and Smough relationship are that Smough is the genuine article, but Ornstein is an illusion. He uses the Leo Ring because Gwyndolin created a new one - after all, he's the ruler of Anor Londo now, and Gwyn must have written down somewhere how to do it. I believe that the real Ornstein is the Old Dragonslayer in Heide. When Flame God Flann and Gwynevere left Anor Londo, they founded Heide as their own kingdom, as evidenced by the Tower of Flame, which I believe was made in honour of Flann. Ornstein, meanwhile, was the protector of the Princess, so he travelled with them, as did the Sentinels, who became the Old Knights and founded the Way of Blue and the Blue Sentinels. The reason for Ornstein using Dark magic, meanwhile, is because he went mad with grief at the death of Gwynevere when Heide was flooded. His grief is due to him being the Sun's Firstborn - he's a mighty warrior, he may have taken the Annals with him when he left Anor Londo as a reminder or perhaps Gwynevere or Flann owned them, and he wields a lightning spear. Compare the spear on the sunlight altar to the Dragonslayer Spear. Anyway, she died, his brother-in-law died two, and due to the loss of his loved ones, Ornstein lost his mind.
Tommy Middleton You know, I think I'd like to see a little book written by Gwyn on how to create rings. "In the case of Smough eating them, or other extenuating circumstances."
Silver Mont yeah with there being a thousand or so kingdoms between "the northern hemisphere of time and the southern hemisphere"( creator talking about dark souls 2,).Is there no chance that armour may be re-invented/re-discovered just like the structures brick work/design.I mean there are only so many designs before you have to repeat something. Like fashion ,old cloths (dresses ,suits ,armours) it's always coming back in fashion .
That is an interesting point! Although I think they are supposed to be dragons, but perhaps from a gameplay perspective, they just used the models of drakes, scaled differently. It would be quite funny if the Dragonslayer had only been beating up lil' drakes, though.
No wonder Smough heartlessly smashes Ornstein with him hammer if you kill him first... it was an illusion created by Gwyndolin because Ornstein had left Anor Londoto look for the Nameless King and Smough was the last 'knight' left guarding the cathedral. We also find Smough's armor in Anor Londo in Dsk3, where we killed him in DsK. We don't know what ever happens to Ornstein though because when we find his armor in DsK3 after the Nameless King boss fight there is no body. Smells like Ornstein DsK3 DLC
When I first fought them, I died immediately before I could even attack (mostly because I was playing as a Mage and was really squishy. Seriously I was even One Shot by a riposte from a Balder...) When I finally beat them, NG+7 was my goal, and uh... Well... let's just say I ended up nearly destroying my controller
Ornstein is one of my favorite characters in DS. He and Smough were one of the hardest boss fights ever created in any rpg. To me, Ornstein truly was the captain of the four knights, mostly because of his armor being golden, and a lion, which is the symbol of leadership, and also because of his position guarding Gwyn and his family. He is the one that stays behind and commands others, such as the other three knights.
I highly admire the way you go in-depth about the Dark Souls Lore, but hearing you pronounce "Ornstein" correctly (Not like the many ppl who say "Ornstien") makes me falling totally in love with you :D :D :D
Exactly. The best fighters rarely make the best leaders, but Ornstein is the one you'd want as your leader, isn't he? He's no pushover, an expert dragon-slayer and he cuts an imposing figure with his golden armour and red plume. And he's lion themed - the king of beasts. Whilst Artorias was perhaps a better straight-up fighter and maybe even more popular, it seems he wasn't as well suited for leading. A leader has to value himself above his troops, generally. Artorias sacrifices himself for Sif.
I remember cosplaying as Ornstein, although i had named my character courage and my mate played one as The Iron Golem, calling himself Heart, and the other just had the butcher knife and the cloth sack from the butcher and called herself brains. We used to call ourselved Oz Champions :P silly i know but it was fun. pitty they didn't get DS2 :(
Seeing as Miyazaki and From Software are all admitted Berserk fans, I always thought of Gwynn's knight corps (and Smough) as being similar to The Band of the Hawk (both first and second). Artorias is an obvious analogue to Guts. Ciaran seems to be similar to Casca given her relationship with Artorias, although her fighting style is similar to Judeau's. Her being the smallest makes me think of her to being somewhat similar to Rickert as well. Gough seems to be a combination of both Irvine and Pippin, the former with his preternatural archery skills and leading a band of inhuman archers, the latter with his massive size which belies a gentle and introspective personality. Ornstein is roughly close to Locus, being a gallant and knightly figure who is the master of the spear/lance. Finally Smough, the wannabe knight, is like Grunbeld in form and Rakshas/Corkus in personality. He's easily the biggest, and quite possibly the strongest along with his master of a gigantic hammer, but his cruel and petty personality keeps him from being accepted as one of the knights.
Watching lore videos and playthroughs got me hooked on dark souls, and I finally got a PS3 the other week, beat it in a few long days, and now its my favorite game lol
Maybe Ornstein knows hes guarding an illusion, and is working eith Gwyndolin to preserve the Image. Or he knows, but simply wants a worthy final battle.
Ciaran and Gough are alive in the DLC, but probably dead in the "main" game, which takes place years later. Ciaran at least - and seeing as both can be killed, I generally assume they are dead. At any rate, Ornstein is the last one left in Anor Londo.
I feel like I'm one of a bare handful of people who had zero difficulty with this boss fight. beat it first try. I DID have my man Solaire with me tho.
What level you are affects the difficulty a lot too. Fighting normal Ornstein and Smough as a level 60 is a lot different than fighting NG+ Ornstein and Smough as a level 20.
Atorias with Ciaran, Ornstein, and Gough's powers is a nightmare..... He would have lightning powers with 100% accuracy and ability to bleed and poison XD
I have no idea what spurred this, but I've always imagined Ornstein as a very proud and haughty type. Maybe it's the way he carries himself. Maybe its the storeroom of dragon heads. Maybe its the gold coloring of his armor. At any rate, since there is much debate over whether Artorias or Ornstein held the leadership role among the four knights, I like to imagine he'd be the type to feel threatened by Artorias, and perhaps squabble with him a lot.
Another reason you might picture him as so proud and haughty is that he's lion themed. And lions are typically thought of as 'proud' what with being the king of beasts and all that. Leo represent, ahoyah!
If Ornstein is human, and wasn't killed and had his soul taken by the player, then perhaps he could respawn as a hollow? I think Smough took his lightning powers not his soul, so he would still be alive just without his lightning powers. Maybe he'd take up a new element in it's place like dark magic.
I'm sure someone has brought it up before, but I think the best example of the relationship between the two is how Smough is down on your level as you enter the room, while Ornstein emerges from the upper floor, where he gets to be closer to Gwynevere. Clearly his higher rank still shows even when the kingdom is all but deserted, and he keeps Smough away from the princess' chambers to maintain his own status as leader. Or maybe the elevators just couldn't handle Smough's weight...
My theory is that Ornstein was with Smough because he was supposed to moniter him. Since Smough wanted to join Gwyn's knights, maybe Gwyn assigned his captain as a supervisor. My reasoning for why Ornstein got crushed by Smough is because Smough was told he was too brutal to pass.
I know I'm late as fuck, but I bet it's just bc his morals are severely fucked up. They seem to have been at least friendly enough to fight together, so I bet he thought that finishing Ornstein off would be a sign of respect- to die to an ally's hand, rather than to an undead's
Honestly smough is so scary just because he's so unsettling. Like his armour is so weird and he walk low down like a two legged spider and it just puts him slap bang in the depths of the uncanny valley.
You're right, the way he waddles along, it's like his armour is pushing down on him but not really impeding him to the point of it being a problem, I dunno. He's ugly, we should destroy him.
lore (lôr, lr) n 1. collective knowledge, beliefs or wisdom on a particular subject, esp of a traditional nature 2. knowledge or learning In this case, the characters are the subjects.
During phase 1, do not lose sight of Smough. Never lose sight of Smough. Ornstein is fast, but Smough will knock off half your health bar in a single hit. For phase 2, if you killed Smough first, Ornstein is basically an Iron Giant that can't ring out you, so basically roll between his legs on every attack except his lighting slam, which you should run away from. No advice for Smough phase 2, since he's my main target phase 1.
If you're running a pure physical build, it helps to have some kind of buff. I did it with a falchion +10 and great magic weapon (found on the chandelier in the painting guardian building's rafters, after cutting it down)
Get ornstien away from smough then gay smough to attack, dodge the attack and hit him while he recovers. After you kill smough ornstien is a cake walk where if you can get up close you can just wail on him.
Look, opposite to what most people say, I actually prefer you kill Smough first. Hear me out: So Ornstein is the fast one and the main troublemaker of the duo right? And Smough is this dude that punishes you if you don't pay much attention. Now the reason why most people think it's a good idea to focus on Ornstein first is well, he's the main troublemaker. But focusing on Ornstein actually has more consequences, you see, Ornstein Can dodge like a pro, while Smough can't (pretty obvious why). So if you focus on Ornstein first, even if you have sight of what Smough is doing, Ornstein can easily catch you off guard if you make even the simplest of mistakes, and then Smough can follow up with that annoying "Choo-choo attack". But when focusing on Smough first, it's less risky, just bait his slam attack and cut away, and if you see Ornstein gliding, it's best to get away and make sure he's behind Smough, for Smough blocks Ornstein's movement and if Smough's hammer hits Ornstein, it pushed Ornstein back, and then just rinse and repeat the bait and hit on Smough. And you kill Smough and Ornstein turns huge, just basically try to stay behind him, if he jumps, roll back, if his spear lights up, and he's in a charging stance, then better get the fuck away or else you're dead. But if he's spear lights up and he raises it, then you're safe and just keep attacking he's back. Dealing with Super Smough is more easy but more risky. There you have it, the easiest way to beat the two
I view the four knights as characters that could be in an anime, Ornstein being the serious leader keeping his team on track, Ciaran and Gough the friendly characters on the side, and Artorias the hero who has to do things alone, the naruto or ichigo of the group if you will.
Just something you all may or may not know: the Altar of Sunlight is a crumbled statue of Gwyn holding a Dragonslayer Spear. What do you think that means?
Yes! That's something I'm really hyped for actually. Cloaks, capes, plumes and all that goodness. I was so disappointed in the first game when I got some Balder armour and the cape was so... piddly. Same with Ornstein's lack of plume.

XD
NeoDracula Smough-(Ornstein Twitches) *SMASH*
Given how f**ked up Dark Souls is, maybe Orstein would have wanted it that way.
"If I were to be slain, take my power and _destroy_ my slayer!"
Smough - COME ON AND SLAM, WELCOME TO THE JAM
I was disappointed to find out that I didn't grow after killing them :/
Not fair!
Oh you grew somewhere
SinerAthin Especially when you got to the princesses' chambers
Even if shes an illusion, attacks still make contact, so she is still a physical being... ALL of her ;)
Still hit her
Well maybe just hurting her makes her disappear so just dont wear armor of thorns while "serving her"
Just imagine how scary Artorias would be if he were in full control of his body and mind... And had his shield.
+MrGhostly12321 are you sure that tiny fragment possesses the same strength as a normal lord soul
Absorb power? Hah. Silly Silver Mont.
It's the power of LOVE THAT GRANTS THEM GREAT STRENGTH!
they both hate each other though
risan 345 THE POWER OF LOVE!
Zedahktur they really hate each other.
risan 345 THE POWER OF FLUFFING LOVE!~
Zedahktur well...ok
I love how you're talking about ornstein doing anything to win, and you're the one stabbing him in the balls the whole battle.
Hey now, Siver Mont the Illiterate Undead doesn't really understand honour. He was born and raised in the Undead Asylum!
Lol

Shelby Shum That's the plan!
Silver Mont do you have the schedule? Kinda wanna be there when it's live (I can deal with VODs but Live is always better :P )
Shelby Shum At the moment, I don't have a schedule for twitch stuff, I just announce it on my twitter.
Yeah, Ornstein seems the type that would "deal" with Smough just because he has to. As much as he might dislike him personally, for example.
***** good theory it was exactly the same as mine too and have you noticed that ornstein's death animation is similar to gwynevere's like a ghost fading away?
***** oooh i forgot about gwyn had that animation too nvm what i said :$ but yeah it could be related to great power somehow
***** of course! That makes more sense ,it would've been so funny to mess around with smough's corpse though :P
Lool i totally agree!
The reason Smough finishes off Ornstein could possibly actually be out of respect for him. It could be that, since Ornstein vastly outranks Smough, Smough thinks that it would preserve his betters honour by taking his life, rather then letting some undead do it instead.
that's what I like to think
He finishes people off...
WITH A HAMMER
Except Smough laughs and relishes in the death of Ornstein whcih may suggest he holds disdain for him and resents him for not allowing him to join the knights of Gwyn.
Better honor? What better honor would there be than falling to the Chosen Undead? Think what you will of the character but they are an unknown legend in the making.
Jubble I doubt it smough is extremely jealous
I think I'm having PTSD flashbacks...

Scared.
Shouldn't it be "Dark Ships?"
I know I'm about 3 years late, but this is so good that I want to see one for Anri and Horace
Please make more episodes of Shipping Souls!!
hey u

I have a theory that
Smough and Ornstain were best friends and went on a picnic but a dragon came and Ornstain came to slay it but Smough ate Ornstain's sandwich while he was fighting the dragon and when Ornstain killed the dragon he realized his sandwich was missing and got angry at Smough, which means that Ornstain didn't invite him as a member of the super Saiyan 4 knights dragon slayers that makes dragon born look like a moldy vagina.
Adam Stewart Beautiful. What is your theory behind the Old Dragonslayer?
Basically with Justin bieber defeated there then came Miley Cyrus who recently had sex with Frampt which is why he looks like he's on meth.
Miley Cyrus was defeated by the Mirror Knight when she was going to crush the world with her ass, the Mirror Knight saved the world but he is now stuck with that image in his head
As for the old Dragonslayer, years have passed and Lil Wayne built Dragonslayer Ornstain again to review his rapping,Ornstain puked on him but then once Lil Wayne sung one word Ornstain fell unconscious but was Reincarnated as Miley Cyrus, Lil Wayne killed himself by walking into a wall and the Miley Cyrus reincarnation was waiting for the chosen undead to come so that she could spread her ass around his face and destroy him.
thanks.

Very possible. I don't see how it wouldn't fit in the game

Thanks!
same with me

Aw man, the idea of a four-way boss fight against Ornstein, Artorias, Ciaran and Gough is kickass
And then if you mange to win, you get to fight Super Gwyn!
How about gwyn, manus, seath and Nito?
You would need to use leet hacks to make yourself a boss
DS/DS3 mashup
Ornstein
Smough
Gael
*and Nameless King*
And Smough!
Uber Artorias riding Sif whilst shooting Goughs bow shooting Ornstein's spears as arrows poisoned with Ciaran's poison along with having her stealth
Sounds like insta-death on steroids
Pardon misspells(if any)
Silentplaysxbox I could dig it.
Smough is a clever play-on-words in terms of translation, as his name in Japanese is 相撲 (Sumou).
Yeah, that's the main reason I had thought his name was pronounced like Smo/Su-mo, despite being spelt in a similar manner to Gough.
I would put Ornstein at #2.
Gravelord Nito: Pushover boss, but possibly the coolest video game character design ever (and I am aware that it's a simple idea--SKULLS EVERYWHERE--but it fucking works).
Yeah, it's a simple concept, but sometimes those are the best!
Not just skulls. Nito's a living pile of entire SKELETONS.
Artorious ? Idk how to spell it but he's pretty bad ass cx
Derrick Sanchez Artorias.
Gravelord Nito > Everything

Thrill or fear, what was his motivation? certainly an interesting concept either way.
red toasti i know this is a year late but hammers and blunt weapons are over all alot more affective against armor.
red toasti Dragons use lightning or am I wrong ?
Maier 2nd Drake's use lightning
Oh dear, now I'm just thinking of Sean Connery: "Welcome to Ana Lando, Chhhhoshen undead. If you sheek the Lardvesshel, first you musht overcome me - Dragonshlayer Ornshtine Connery and my companion, Shmo."
KILL SMOUGH FIRST.
HE SHOULDN'T HAVE THE HONOR OF CRUSHING ME.
I always kill Smough first! Not just for the Leo Ring, but Super Orns is easier to fight, too.
Silver Mont No hes not
Nathanael McIlwain he is. Super Ornstein you can stay close to for longer and dodge better, whereas Super Smough does more attacks you have to move away from him for in order to not die.
Just to get some sick armour and an even sicker spear.
"Come on and Slam ! And Welcome to Lordran ! (Space Jam)."
Great Video. Subscribed and watching all the videos XD
Thanks! I got a lore video about Paladin Leeroy coming up in a few days, and I'm quite pleased with how it came out.
5 humanity? That's not a whole lot bud xD
+TROLL ALPACKA Well it is when you:
1. Have none
2. Are going through the game for the first time and, therefore, more susceptible to dying due to not knowing what's next.
+U Wot M8 go to the depths n farm the rats
Jango Bun Bun Eh, it's a pain in the ass to backtrack from the end of Anor Londo to the Depths without the Lordvessel.
Couldn't even summon Solaire with out getting invaded by some ass hole.
Like Smough saw a proper way to tell Ornstein to fuck off without putting himself in trouble over it, almost.
Smough's the protector? why the fuck did he destroy the pillars and smash shit with his mighty hammer then?
OG~Clima He's not very smart.
Silver Mont yea his intelligence stat is like 1
He's tasked to protect Gwynevere, not the architecture. He's still a moron.
Golgotha - #smooth
Tao of Jun Fan FUCK YO COUCH
ornstein Sounds really german , so I'd pronounce it "Awn-Schtayen"
Best contribution to you tube
makes sense that he would be inspired by germanic mythology - e.g Siegfried, the dragonslayer
It makes me cringe whenever I dont hear the sch when ppl say ornstein. idkw it just does.
I just call him Einstein
You're right about that, and Smough is pronounced "Smaw". Really badass bosses with badass names.
Just a theory but I still agree with the jealousy theory.
smough crushes ornstein because he was jealous for ornstein not letting him be one of the knights, and the two didnt have the best relationship
I think we need a poll. In fact, I'm gonna make one and edit it into the video description!
Even better, you fight the four knights, Artorias absorbs them and turns into Guts from Berzerk.
#tobadasstohandle
Villager: It'll grind your bones for its bread! Shrek: Actually, that would be a giant. Smough are an giant. The lores are confirm.
"Super Saiyan 4 Artorias: actually pretty scary"
No kidding O_O
Love their lore, love them as characters. HATE fighting them.
@Seamus Chase +10 Zweihander by itself makes them easy now, 5 years on.
The only real dragon you fight in game doesn't even do any fire damage. It's all physical and magic.
Anon-e-mouse Anon
Mmh, I presume that's one further thing separating real dragons from the wannabes :3
EvilDoresh
The dragons shown in the intro don't seem to use fire either, infact it's the humans that 'find' the fire and it's the witches of izalith that use fire as first.
Brecht Mombaerts
Lol, totally forgot that. How could I forget that XD ?!
EvilDoresh
even kalameet his fire seems more like magic then actaul fire (it's black).
That said I am guessing that different dragons had different powers
Wow. That was amazing, sir. Fantastic job! Made me think...
So are the Heide Knights a coincidence, or something else?
We don't find Smough's armor, we buy that from the Shrine Handmaiden. We do find his hammer in Irithyll though.
Jon Snow Because the illusion you fight was created using a fraction of Orstein's soul, most likely.
Jon Snow You're probably right there, but if you wanted a real answer, you'd probably have to ask Miazaki himself.
''Sounds like a cool guy.Hates magic, loves bashing things. And who does not like bashing things?''
Isuckatgaming I'll tell you who: Cowards!
Silver Mont Sounds like if you have ever played dragon age you would be on the templar's side...
LordOfTheMelons1
Maybe!
Silver Mont Aye! Cowards they are!
This is well thought out, I really enjoyed this speculation. Like honestly I couldn't find any better lore on these two. And also, a I'm Leo myself xD
Smough could be a baby giant. He has a really chubby face.
End Him Rightly That is just a mask. His eyes are in the neck of his armor.
End Him Rightly the eyes are acxually on hes neck
That's a really cool theory. I like it!
smough's father was a snorlax :P
It all makes sense. Smough needed a thunderstone to evolve into Mega-Smough.
XD
This is the best explanation I have ever seen for something in Dark Souls.
Artorias is by far my favorite npc/boss/person in dark souls. Dark souls lore always gets to me haha, you sir have earned a sub! :D
He is the one that stays behind and commands others, such as the other three knights.
great lore videos for a great game , thanks for posting
Smough does the exact same voice as the giants of dark souls 2.
Love the Berserkness of it
This was mindfuck in a box but it brought a tear to my eye when you mentioned how Smough crushes Orestein while Orestein just puts a hand on Smough...
I weeped manly tears when Solaire died in this video.
its ok its just a phantom
Watching lore videos and playthroughs got me hooked on dark souls, and I finally got a PS3 the other week, beat it in a few long days, and now its my favorite game lol
Awesome!
Maybe Ornstein knows hes guarding an illusion, and is working eith Gwyndolin to preserve the Image. Or he knows, but simply wants a worthy final battle.
Well like this he can also go and watch the illusion any time .. what more could you want ?
I always thought he was protecting the lord vassal to prevent the chosen undead becoming a threat to Gwyn.
10/10 Would watch again.... I can't get enough of your videos Silver Mont!
You sir, have my respect.
Albert Einstine Thanks, I'm glad you're liking 'em!
Goughstein Ciantorias......I would never want to face THAT...
I DID have my man Solaire with me tho.
same
i just beat them on NG+ first try too.
damn .
Pretty much all fights are zero difficulty with summons, that's why most people don't do it.
Eh Solaire didn't want to use an estus in my save and he died after I killed ornstein.
"I like Havel, he hates magic and likes smashing things"
Lol, opposite for me, go team Seath+Logan!
Do you know avout the pursuers?
Magic users are trash
Silver Mont
Indeed. His behavior fits quite nicely with what is commonly attributed to lions.
If Ornstein is human, and wasn't killed and had his soul taken by the player, then perhaps he could respawn as a hollow? I think Smough took his lightning powers not his soul, so he would still be alive just without his lightning powers. Maybe he'd take up a new element in it's place like dark magic.
Remember Ornstein and smough of anor londo were ilusions
I'm sure someone has brought it up before, but I think the best example of the relationship between the two is how Smough is down on your level as you enter the room, while Ornstein emerges from the upper floor, where he gets to be closer to Gwynevere. Clearly his higher rank still shows even when the kingdom is all but deserted, and he keeps Smough away from the princess' chambers to maintain his own status as leader. Or maybe the elevators just couldn't handle Smough's weight...
Super Saiyan 4 Artorias God I love it xD
My theory is that Ornstein was with Smough because he was supposed to moniter him. Since Smough wanted to join Gwyn's knights, maybe Gwyn assigned his captain as a supervisor. My reasoning for why Ornstein got crushed by Smough is because Smough was told he was too brutal to pass.
Ornstein is Jaime Lannister, pass it on
Jaime is my favourite ASoIaF character, as it happens. Does that make Smough... Brienne?
Silver Mont Nope, that makes Smough Cersei :D
I would wager Smough has at least 100 more braincells than Cersei.
Silver Mont I would wager that you are correct
SirJamesStark Smough and King Hippo Hippo
Excellent series, Keep up the awesome work.
gough, smough. cough, plough.
That last line was definitely deep man. Love the lore vids
maybe smough finishes him off just because he's an executioner.. and that's kinda his thing?
boring theory i know xD
could be. never thought of it like that. thnx for opening my mind to that theory
it is kinda his thing. plus I heard, lore wise, that smough and ornstein were not the best buddies
That's what I though Duskworker. I didn't feel there was any animosity between the two. In an age of darkness, a strong ally is a strong ally.
You sound like salad fingers
+Emil Goubasarian How/what/why
+Silver Mont Oh, there you are, back from the war.... *cough*
Maybe Smough was the same size as orinstien, but like what happens when he dies first, smough absorbed size from those he executes? :o
Schornstein und Schmauk
lore (lôr, lr)
n
1. collective knowledge, beliefs or wisdom on a particular subject, esp of a traditional nature
2. knowledge or learning
In this case, the characters are the subjects.
Ornstein (Or-n-stein) - [Orn=Eagle Stein= Stone] Ornstein= Eagle Stone...
+xX_Golden Snake_Xx Lion symbolism. Lion Eagle Stone. Lion Eagle. Griffon. Ornstien confirmed for Harry Potter
+SamuelCish griffon stone was what again?
or Stone Eagle.
I think Smough's armor looks fat so that he can deceive his enemies making them believe he is slow and uncoordinated.
I cannot beat this boss! I have beaten Dark Souls 2 and 3 now with all DLC but have never got past this boss!? Wtf.
Use a +15 weapons prefferably the zeignder thing
Look, opposite to what most people say, I actually prefer you kill Smough first. Hear me out:
So Ornstein is the fast one and the main troublemaker of the duo right?
Smough was never my alli he killed me
You worked really hard here. Thank you so much for your effort.
Glad you like it! Although this is high up on my list of videos I want to re-make and improve.
I think Smough is cooler
Yesssss
Nah Ornstein
+YetiSnow ManThing does orstein have nipples on his armor no smough does and that makes him 15x better
Smough is scary af especially when you first see him
Ornstein is just a little puppy dog if you were to fight him 1 on 1
Just something you all may or may not know: the Altar of Sunlight is a crumbled statue of Gwyn holding a Dragonslayer Spear. What do you think that means?
It's pronounced "Smuff," as in "tough." Or it is "Smoo," as in "through?" Or "Smoh," as in "thought?"
Fucking Fromsoft. Why have you done this?
It's like Su-mo
Silver Mont Or is it... Schmoe? I'm gonna make O-Joe and Schmoe a thing now.
It's an 'Sm', and then make that sound the giant lord makes when he swings at you.
TheBlue Sentinel This is it. This is perfect. Just some random, unclear, guttural vowel sound.
Yes! That's something I'm really hyped for actually. Cloaks, capes, plumes and all that goodness. I was so disappointed in the first game when I got some Balder armour and the cape was so... piddly. Same with Ornstein's lack of plume.
