My grandpa served in the RAF during WWII. He would say "They won't believe our stories when we tell them, so we chose to stay quiet about it. Just be happy we fought so you won't have to see what we saw." He also sat me down when I was a kid to have a talk about not being angry at Germans. He stated that most of them only did what they had to or their families would pay for it. He had no hate for Germans, Italians or Japanese. He did dislike US americans claming they ended the war or south americans protecting runaway naz1s. He had seen enough hate to not hate anyone but instead try to find something to respect. The sad part is that now most of them are gone and the younger gen. won't understand the fear we saw in their eyes when someone talked about war.
Tell his story. Offer to tell in schools.
@@82Renating I would love to. The stories I know and have heard makes me respect that generation on a diffrent level. My grandpa became good friends with the norwegian king, king Haakon. But he was all about protecting that knowledge. We found 2 letters after his death, but he burned the rest, my grandma confirmed this.
No veterans or citizens disliked the US post WW2. Without armament and soldiers from the US Western Europe would have fell to the Nazis forever.
Feels like the Scandinavians had a similar approach when they were in Afghanistan....just different hills and villages...
I spent boot camp at Rena leir and 20 years later i worked as a civilian with an afghan refugee who had watch his whole family except his mother being executed by the Taliban. The look in his eyes as he told me this will haunt me forever.

Greetings from Norway. First a huge thanks to the countries that fought against evil here in Norway during the ww2. Sometimes evil has to be fought far away to secure peace in other parts of the world. Secondly, great video breakdown. Lastly, thanks to our troops for the job&sacrifice.

@@RyanForrest1664 Thanks for the comment. My father was a commando and winter survival instructor for the foreign troops in Island during ww2. The story behind the British invasion of Island is really interesting. It just adds to the importance of controlling the north.

Fun fact! My step dad actually survived a land mine. He was serving some years ago when he stepped on a land mine, and what makes me cry of happiness is that he got all his mates and everyone on his team in safety and then he stepped of and it exploded. He luckily aurvived, but he has burn marks all over him, and a robot thing beside his heart that keeps the heart beating

Hi, I just found your channel, RUclips recommended it for some reason. I'm Norwegian, never been in the Army.
My Great Grandfather was a Commander in the Norwegian Navy during Germany's invasion in WW2. His ship got hit by a torpedo and he hid in the chimney for 24 hours when the German soldiers went through the ship. He threw his uniform in the water and managed to convince them he was dead.
I wouldn't been born, if he didn't survive, so although I haven't been there myself, I have great respect for people that risk their lives for peace.

A friend of mine were one of the first norwegians to arive in afganistan. the firsst thing thay did when thay arived was to drag a car out in the middle of taliban controled area and call in a helicopter attack team on it. and said, we dont attack you if you dont attack us. he said that when norwegian helicopters flew over firefights would temperery stop
Bullshit. Most of The taliban are uneducated locals. Many of whom still believe they are fighting the Russians. They see western forces and automatically assume they are american or Russian.

I was nearly 18 home after passing out getting told by my mum to be in by 11:30 when my old fella (royal navy 1934 to 1945) looked at my mum smiled and told her to forget the time limit he might have to go to war tomorrow

I'm watching this a little late because your 3rd video came out and I needed to catch up. When it comes to doing the briefing for families, I've had to do it to an extent based on my job in the US Army. I found that the best way is like being a doctor and having to break bad news. Be up front and as honest as possible. Deal with the pain and anger when it comes, but when it subsides, you will be respected more for telling the truth rather than sugar coating the situation. Bad things happen and bad things can happen on any deployment, families need to be ready for anything rather than just the Soldiers.
9:44 i noticed the text because on june 27 we lost 4 good men to a roadside IED assuming this was in 2010.
Brand new and brand new, 10 years is more correct, but yeah, great series.
I highly recommend watching a documentary called "Armadillo", it's from a danish group of soldiers in Helmand Afghanistan. (If you havn't already)

I have a friend that served in the Norwegian special forces down there.. He and his squad got a bit controversial with the media. They said "To Valhalla" And had the punisher logo on their jackets, and sometimes horns on their helmets. They also said war is better then sex, "Krig er bedre enn å pule" google that and you find it. These guys lost a friend in combat, and everyone but my friend from the squad suffers from Post-traumatic stress syndrome in some form or another. It was not easy, and I respect you all for going through it! I think the media deserves the truth, and that toning it down to be something else is in fact a harmful lie.
Hate to correct you on this matter, its a small but still big fault. TMBN arent regarded as special forces, they are good yes. but they dont have special forces status. Other than that i agree with you, the things that was said by the guys from TMBN about War being better than sex etc is drawn out of proportions by the media (VG), they didnt mean it like that at all.

I remember I was in NCO school, and this incident was mentioned to us specifically. We had lots of interesting ethical education while we were at school and we were left to think about what it ment and what would we do in that situation. It's so interesting because at some point you start do deal with things using humour and your own internal way of communicating. It can look grim to outsiders, but grief manifests in such different ways. Anyway we were stationed at the same base as TMBN, and they actually are really good guys.

They are good guys for sure, that's why they are my friends :D And Yeah.. people outside of war will probably never understand.. but when you are in a constant deadly situation, and your adrenaline and heart rate are jacked.. what can you do? Humor is the only thing that kept it together. And humor, like many forms of art, is individual. And what can be more fun for someone being shot at, then the enamy dying? And thanks for the message! I was 28 when I joined the US Army as a 19 kilo M1A1 Armored Crewmen with the 1 AD 1 BN 37 AR Bandits Alpha Co 1Plt during 2003 through 2006 2 Tours Downrange 2003 through 2004 15 Month Deployment 2005 through 2006 Ramadi, Iraq Closed Friedburg Germany down 2006 moved to Texas after my ETS. I miss it and my fellow Battles. I’ll be 47 February. I was married at 28 2 sons and a daughter. I signed up on 18 December 2001 after 911. So many signed up I was on Delayed Entry for awhile 😂. A good thing I guess, after being attacked in New York. Got sent to Baghdad, and Karaballa, Iraq in our first Deployment. Karaballa was our 90 day Stop Loss after Al Sadar started the uprising and Iraq first Election
You know, this mission feels like a Puzzle. You have to help them by doing your part to help them do their part. Like pieces of a Puzzle. A Puzzle Where one wrong move, one fail can destroy all the Puzzle pieces you left. And then, well....

Watch many garbage reactions videos from American macho´s. Stopped watching these videos but then I saw this one. British Marines respond to Norwegian soldiers in Afghanistan. I trained with the Royal Marines back in the 80's. Best soldiers I have served with, except for the skiing skills hahaha. Thanks for this reaction brother!
I don't know if you've seen the documentary of the Norwegian all-girl SF troop. It's quite interesting. I think it's a two-part series on RUclips called "Norway's Girl Special Forces" or something like that.

The Norwegian Area of responsibility in Afghanistan was a much more active Taliban area then say the Finns or the Swedes had. Of the Nordic countries the Norwegian and the Danes had the hardest circumstances to control

Norway lost 4 soldiers in Afganistan and Denmark 43 which average out to what the US loss were by size comparison

Interesting look into how my country does deployments. i won't be able to experience it as i was not accepted into the Norwegian military. (Asthma makes someone quite ineligible for military service)
About the family briefing: If it was honest, most families would be against it.
Military is seldom honest about anything, if they was, they would have problems to get soldiers to fight for them.
Both when it comes to how dangerous it is, and the actual political reasons for why they do things.

In 20year in Afghanistan Norway lost about 10 soldiers. From what I know
so sad to see them leave their families not knowing if they will come back :(

As far as the up to date death photos go, the USMC must have felt it would be a waste of time. I personally didn't want anyone acting that I was already blown away. So, I told my family what was happening after it was clear what our job was going to be in-country. I even broke up with my girlfriend. Because the odds of her being faithful for thirteen months were the same us being killed. By the way, our task was to be shoving shit against the tide.

I live his videos but he seems to think their is a specific way or a better way to do most things in these war videos yet the ways he's suggesting aren't practical for the enemy. Many of whom are uneducated tribesmen. The taliban aren't isis, they don't come from cities or major towns like Kabul. They come from mountain villages that they likely have never left. Many afghan villages still believe that nato is the soviets and they are fighting all of the west

Legally, war is between states. We are allied with Afghanistan. A common person would call it "war" even though we were fighting guerrilla/terrorists.

One of the reasons it all falls apart and Taliban retook power is in my view that we can't actually spread ideological material.
If we did then it'd be an argument of whether to spread Christian, or secular or other ideological material etc.
Since western democracies, whether republics like America or monarchies like Norway are based on neutrality towards these issues it's not something you can do really.
Then you get a problem like no other: The Taliban is committed to an ideology based in religion as a source of unity, and the occupying force attempting to create a better society than the one that the Taliban ruled in 2001 is trying to compete with that society without directly engaging the religion itself.
I agree to a part, but we should not forget all the schools we buildt in Afghanistan, all the roads and the hope we gave hundreds of thousands of people. These things still stand, and it was worth the try. its not like Afghanistan would be better of if the coalition didnt invade in 2001, the russians didnt make any schools, didnt protect girls or civilians, they didnt build a single meter of road to the Afghans. THe us and the western allies did. The country fell apart when the corrupt leader ran with his money.. Who wants to protect that?
@@hoenircanute Yeah I agree and would add that I think the future isn't set in stone. Afghanistan didn't stop existing just cause the US isn't there and the Taliban is in charge now.

I am Norwegian and came back after 15 years in south america. I do not remember the year, but it was 2014-2015 and right there at the airport, I saw a lot of Norwegians in uniform. I flew a lot in the subsequent years, and I kept on seeing these Norwegians in uniform. I am a historian by training, right, and I kept on seeing these parallels to the US and Vietnam! These Norwegians where going to fight in Afghanistan and Irak, and it was as unjust as the Vietnam war in the US and costing as much, not in lives, but in money. I dont know what I would say, but its just wrong!

Det gir ikke mening. Eneste grunnen til at nordmenn støtter dette er fordi vi har et media som elsker krig, med journalister som får utdanningen finansiert av Raytheon og Atlantic Council. Nordmenn leser til og med fortsatt VG som spredde desinformasjon i 2003 om at Irak hadde masseødeleggelsesvåpen, og som i ettertid aldri beklaget dette.

As a Norwegian I am ashamed that my country has participated in this unnecessary occupation, which has only increased the suffering of the Afghan people, and how the state media is depicting this as something positive. And while this is going on we still support radical terrorists in Syria. Ridiculous
