Brandon Herrera built the AK-50 as a proof of concept. It was never intended to enter military service. It definitely could in the future, but it was a personal build.
No real need for it in service, either - not with superior, simpler, less expensive, proven designs already in service. Scaling up a personal long arm to an AMR in size produces design issues that it took a LOT of dedicated, very smart, smiths, machinists, and engineers 8 years to overcome.

The barrel flex was because of the muzzle break being designed to impart downward pressure to help with recoil. Turns out they didnt need it and redesigned the break without the top ports and there is now no more flex in the barrel. Forrest meant he wasn't as knowledgeable, it had nothing to do with his enthusiasm with firearms.
I'm a medically retired US Marine (97-09) and I currently work as a gunsmith and firearms instructor. Firearms here in the US are very prevalent. Estimates range from 330 million to over 480 million guns here in the US. There is no way of knowing specifically as it is illegal for the government to maintain a registration of firearms owners as well as the fact that that it is perfectly legal for citizens to design and build their own weapon systems without government permission as long as the firearm is never sold or transferred to another individual. Every small town has at least one gunsmith and many larger towns and cities have dozens of even hundreds depending on the population. Many of us gunsmiths routinely design and build our own whether it is from scratch or even using "80%" receivers to complete the manufacturing process and assembled with commonly available parts kits. The US is a shining example of what the world in general should be like.
Tell that to the computer programmer from Bushwick, Queens, NYC. He made his own and was hauled into court over it. And California, despite this law, does maintain a registry of firearms owners.
@@Anon54387 You are correct sir! That is state laws that violate the Constitution, imo

So Brandon did an updated video, the barrel whipping was caused by the muzzle brake. When he hip fired it, the muzzle break vented so much gas upwards it forced the muzzle to go downwards significantly. Apparently the Ak 50 didn’t have much muzzle climb to begin with as it recoiled backwards.
Two things:
1) Brandon explained that the *EXCESSIVE* muzzle flip was caused by too aggressive of a muzzle brake. Replacing it fixed the problem.

One thing I would suggest in regards to the failure of a .50 BMG, check out Kentucky Ballistics RUclips channel as he had a single shot, break-action rifle chambered in .50 BMG explode on him, and he documented the injuries that it caused him. It came to light that he had purchased some specialized ammunition, and that ammunition was counterfeit, loaded with the wrong gunpowder type, and it resulted in muzzle pressure well beyond the scope of what the rifle could safely handle, unbeknownst at the time of the incident.

Good job on this project. For those who don't know, the Browning M2 (Ma Deuce) .50 cal machine gun has been in service for 100 years, mounted on air and ground platforms (including a quad mount for anti-aircraft defense). One on each shoulder, plus duffle bag, ruck sack, gas mask, personal weapon, and anything else that we needed to go fight the rooskies. My back hurts.

he fixed the barrel wobble, was caused by the compensator :D
15:30 The movement of the barrel when he fires is an example of barrel harmonics. Simplified, the excessive forces of a rifle calibre round going off (especially .50 BMG) creates a massive shock as soon as the round is ignited, making the barrel vibrate very rapidly, and create the whipping motion you see. The bullet itself is much slower than the vibrations, meaning the bullet leaves the barrel AFTER the barrel is in motion (just barely after, the bullet is gone by the time even the small wobbles are visible. Split seconds here). Tuning barrel harmonics is attemting to make the bullet leave the barrel at the exact same angle, every single shot. If you watch slow motion footage of even mid-calibre rifles, there is a significant amount of wobble. This is a simplified version, theres a ton of math that goes into it from barrel composition to the type of powder being used.
Thank you for the explanation, I was wondering about that for the longest time. Cheers mate...
Yes! Finally, someone who understands. It is a little known fact that Taglioni, designer and engineer for Ducati in their glory years, had tuning fork holes in the 750 SS L Twin race bike frames. When the engine was tuned to peak output, the tuning forks were inserted to ensure the frame was harmonically balanced to the engine. Small sections of excess steel would be ground off the frame at strategic points (under seat, excess footpeg mount steel etc) until the forks rang true.
That 50 gives me so many tactical idea's, just imagine having a platoon of soldiers just behind your main fire fight, and having them lay down supressive fire on your enemies main resistance points, you would scatter them in the wind figuratively and literally quickly. Gotta love Herrera.

Your comment about the gun blowing up and hurting the shooter is very relevant. One of Brandon's friends, Scott of the RUclips Channel Kentucky Ballistics, had a 50 BMG explode in his face and almost kill him. That was almost three years ago. But Brandon had to be thinking about that since he helped make content for Scott while he was recovering.

You need to go over to demolition Ranch and go to the range day for RUclipsrs. You would absolutely love it.
A couple of things.
First, the AK-50 does still have a few function issues. V3 (which we just saw) doesn't have a safety or bolt hold open on empty. Basically, there are a lot of little things to correct before we can get a production version, let alone a full auto version.
Second, the "barrel wobble" is called "barrel harmonics" and you, with the correct equipment, can use that data to make adjustments to your rifle to make it more accurate.
Third, when it comes to gunsmithing, the primary function is repair and mild modification. I'd say that at least 70% of "Gunsmiths" are "parts replacers". Kinda like most Automobile Mechanics today. When it comes to making bank as a gunsmith, you basically need to be well known, well loved, well versed in geometry, metalurgy, welding, and, to a certain extent, engineering.
Forgot one sir. Machinist.... lathe, and mill.

You don't need a license to manufacture "tools" for personal use.
On the slow-mo part of the video where you see the barrel flex like that, all firearms do that to some degree. It's called barrel harmonics and is the reason why no weapon has the same accuracy even though they are made with the same materials and design. You can design it to have better harmonics to some degree, but doing so will generally cost more and is one of the reasons why most military firearms are 2 MOA rather than sub MOA.
He solved the barrel bending issue by changing the compensator on the end of the barrel. Also the other people shooting the AK-50 are gun-tubers, the US gun-tuber community are a really wholesome bunch.
In a recent video, he explained that the barrel vibrated like that because the original muzzle break for the AK 47 directed a lot of force down to prevent barrel lift. He's since replaced the old muzzle break with a new design and eliminated the vibration.
Yes the barrel flexes. Even the M2 .50 cal machine gun has a whip action on the barrel. That is from the force of the round travelling down the barrel.

Texas actually was a separate country but was annexed into the United states in 1845.
The term "assault rifle" specifically refers to a select fire rifle (can switch between semi and full auto) that uses small caliber ammunition. The size of the magazine is irrelevant.
The barrel shaking is absolutely normal. It's actually very bad when the barrel doesn't shake because that means it's too rigid and will likely fracture.

Also it was it's own country for a time. Texans fought for its independence from mexico in 1836 but America didn't let it become a state so we were The Republic of Texas until 1864
Oh...its not a joke
Well, maybe not 24 hours, but definitely 20 hrs.
Texas used to be it's own country
I myself know in the late 80's I was stationed at Ft Polk LA and my brother was stationed at Ft Bliss TX I took leave to go see him I drove for 21 hours to get across Texas going east to west there are spots in Texas you can stand still turn around in a circle and not see anything for 30 to 40 miles
Texas, formerly an independent republic (just short of 10 years after its war of independence from Mexico) joined the US as a state in 1846.
Fun fact, Texas was an independent nation for about 9 yrs, before joining the USA .
And is one of several states with a clause allowing for becoming an independent nation again if they so choose.
15:28 Barrel Harmonics. Pretty much every rifle barrel will distort & wave as the projectile moves through it. That's where top-end competition shooters will "harmonically tune" their barrels to their ammo.
It's really quiet amazing how much more accurate you can make a rifle by controlling things like ammunition and projectile consistency while matching the powder charge of the ammo for pressures that harmonize with the barrel, and even go so far as to use a muzzle device to alter the harmonics of the barrel to fine-tune it to your ammo.
Eric Cortina on RUclips is an excellent source for a deep dive into this. He even produced his own tuner & it works wonderfully.
The barrel flexing has been corrected, it was the muzzle brake design. They redesigned the brake and took the flex out.
Brandon was also very close to being a member of congress representing Texas in the most recent election. So he did all this while running for congress. He may be a transplant technically but re represents some of the best in Texas in my opinion.
15:40 The Gas Piston (Top Barrel) on the AK-50 takes cues from the PKM Machine Gun as the Piston and Bolt are connected by a Pin and Hinge, it was chosen that way for ease of maintenance and the shaking from the Dust Cover was actually due to the Muzzle Brake not being able escape more of the excess the gasses as Brandon decided to copy a Muzzle Brake he bought that was made for 5.45 and 7.62 rounds
The PK/PKM Machine Gun was designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, the same person who made the AK-47 the PK's Fire Control Group is essentially an AK-47 but Upside Down and meant to be used on Belt Fed Systems
When you mentioned having a breach explosion, it reminded me of Kentucky Ballistics who had a .50BMG rifle explode in his face.
He survived by literally shoving his thumb in his neck to plug a bleed in his carotid artery while he was driven to the hospital.
His RUclips is also excellent for leaning about really BIG guns.
Just came here from Brandon's updated AK-50 video. The barrel whip at 15:28 is a result of the muzzle brake design (it's cut to also act as a muzzle rise compensator). A change to a pure muzzle brake solved that problem.
The barrel whip was caused by a muzzle brake with a lot of upwards venting. It has since been replaced by one that vents sidewards, which has solved the issue.
They swapped the muzzle break for another one and the barrel wobbling was corrected
8:35 "I want one" says everyone, I'm not sure the blue prints are legal, but the waiting list is forever on this beast.
I'm sure you've seen it by now, but he used the high-speed footage here to address the "barrel whip" issue. It came down to a redesign of the muzzle brake. He also finished all the cosmetic finish work in the video he made about that... Like you, now I want to see what the long range accuracy, and compare that to a semi-auto Barrett of the same barrel length... Brandon also ran for and narrowly lost a primary race for congress (or senate) while he was finishing the AK-50. He's an awesome dude. I hope he can help repair our government one day.
The way Brandon's videos are done and the fact he is a weapons manufacturer, he seems like Ironman without the wealth.
Im an American viewer, and I was surprised! Respect to different views from different cultures!
They did a follow up and fixed the barrel bounce, within tolerance and "fine" but still. Turns out they used a standard AK muzzle break which pushes some gas vertically but the 50 is so stable and heavy it just doesn't need it. Running a vertically symmetrical break corrected it and aside from fixing the bounce makes it hip fire like a dream somehow.
Hi! You probably already know this, but Brandon made a follow-on video to discuss improvements he made including dealing with the barrel flex. Definitely worth a view.
Just to clarify for my friends across the pond. We already have an AR 50 that shoots the 50AE bullet. It's called the Beowulf. Brandon is building an AR platform 50 BMG. It is legitimately shooting the same thing as the Barrett sniper rifle and the Browning assault rifle. It is the thing that you shoot out of the mounted 50. And for those of you who haven't fired a weapon before the amount of kick that comes out of this thing is astonishingly low considering it's a freaking 50.
Funny you mentioned the barrel flex. He addresses thst in a followup video. It was the muzzle brake design. They re-engineered the muzzle brake and the flopping on the breeze went away.
"You wouldn't want to be storming a building with that thing" - I mean ... maybe. Imagine hearing that thing coming down the hallway.
Brandons channel is a good channel to get into the guts as guns as he breaks each one down and explains their history and how they work
update on the barrel bending when fired. Turned out the muzzle brake was designed for the smaller ak but it forces too much of the gas up when fired thus forcing the rifle barrel down hard. This is not needed on the AK 50 because of the huge weight of the gun. BH replaced the muzzle brake with one that doesn't force the air up and now it fires without the bending of the barrel at all.
