My grandfather was on the Bismarck for a large part of its lifetime as a vessel. It shared a crew rotation with the Prinz Eugen, which is the only reason I exist, since they swapped crews a week prior and he was the Eugen's navigator for the battle where the Bismarck sank. He didn't like talking about it much, but he did say two things about the whole thing. One being that the moment the Bismarck sank, he knew the war was over and that the biggest tragedy about the whole thing was that aside from the political officers to keep the crews in line, nobody had an axe to grind for the regime. Everybody was just trying to get through the whole ordeal alive in the end. But when you think about stuff like that, where but for a coin toss a few generations ago, you wouldn't even be around... Man, I was entertained and I had to think during this, too. Really good podcast, guys.
Damn. I just did a mini deep dive on the Bismarck reading your comment. I always thought most of the crew survived, though they suffered heavy casualties. Not the case. 2200 killed, only 110-116 were pulled from the water alive and became POWs. Shitty your grandfather was on the wrong side of history, but a compelling life all the same
@@comradeeverclear4063 He didn't really have a choice. He joined the navy during the Weimar Republic because he wanted to see the world and interact with other cultures. From what I know, there was talk about revolt and mutiny during the early days of the war, but when they mixed the SS into crews and you could end up dead in your bed (or, tbh, worse, someone would sit down at lunch with you that you'd barely seen before and *tell you* how your wife was doing back home, name, address and all) for saying the wrong thing, that kind of talk pmuch stopped.
38:23 Grampa was the OG Big Daddy if he trained with the bioshock helmet. I'm so glad y'all had him on. One of the best episodes to date 🖤 much love from Philly
With the Bismarck and ship discussion, I feel like this is the perfect place to bring up my idea that Nick should make a video on the Prinz Eugen, one of my favorite ships She was with the Bismarck, and escaped, later lost her entire stern and survived, she made the Channel Dash past the British with no damage, survived all of WWII, and then afterwards, she survived TWO NUCLEAR BOMBS and then still was sailing for another FIVE MONTHS and only sank when a small leak couldn't be repaired because she was radioactive
This gentlemen is a class act. I really enjoy watching him hit those distant targets on battle field. When children make jokes he just shrugs it off. "They are just kids, dont worry about it"
I gotta agree with Nick, Rising Sun was one of the peak MoH games they came out with. The cinematic of gunning on that PT boat going between the exploding battleships legit had me enraged. I was actually angry and was shooting zeros down with a vengeance. - getting that kind of emotion out of a 10 year old is truly an accomplishment.
If you get a chance try out pacific assault. It feels like a more complete version of RS with a better story, but has some similar mission involving Pearl Harbour as act 1
Got to enjoy this episode from a unique perspective- I'm in my 50's, been in the Bar Service Industry for 25+ years & out of the Army for 30+. Most of my contemporaries were fellow Irish bartenders who were between 12-17 years younger than me. I'd wonder why they'd seek my perspective on things or wanted to rehear a certain tale I'd told over a few whiskeys on certain occasions. It didn't bother me- quite the contrary- but I never looked at these times like they were 'Teachable Moments' or 'Words of Sacred Wisdom'. A few of the guys went into the service or worked for local city/state government while I contentedly stayed behind the bar (my primary love). I got to play 'Pappa-Bear' when the bar & waitstaff went out drinking, & to act as the voice of reason & Authority for the rowdier St. Patty's Day Parties. My lil' brother (also a vet, out for 25 years) brought to my attention how much he appreciated my words of advice before he left for basic training (we BOTH went to Leonard Wood). "Bro, you give friends & family the advice they need, not the sugar coated B.S. we ALL got from our recruiters." I liked that answer. Seems my brother got hit with a Wisdom Stick while my back was turned. I LOVED hearing Grnpa mentioning the 'Gaming by Mail' he did in the 70's. I heard about this but thought someone was just pulling my leg. Your guests & Hosts make 'Unsubscribe' must-see viewing for Veterans, Smart Folks, & viewers who just enjoy being entertained. I have an RC FMS P-51 that i think am going to repaint in the "down for double" colour scheme, A because it's a stuning colour scheme and B because this man and his family deserves every bit of respect we can give him.
Ironicaly the FMS P-51 comes in the Red Tails colours, i will let the history nerds figure out what i might need to do for historical accuracy...
I'm a long distance shooter as well. My longest shot was 1710yrds. Now I know there are people out there who have shot way father than that. But when you shoot those distances and hang out with other long distance guys and gals, you become numb to how far that actually is. Talking to people who only shoot out to maybe 300yrds really reminds you how far you're actually reaching out there.
You should check out some of Overton windex long range videos he’s got some insane shots man
Nothing like patting yourself on the back with zero self awareness.
People shoot fathers from 1700 yards and beyond... man, american gun culture is sick! What that mans children 😢
My longest shot ever was like 400 yards with my 30-06 Remington 783 I use for hunting lmao I’d love to get a good rifle for long range but we just don’t have any of those ranges near me given you would have to clear a lot of trees (I’m guessing idk)
@@robf4605nothing wrong with that. Jealousy is a bad look.
I've saw a newer podcast with "grndpagaming" being mentioned. So i had to go back and listen to it. You guys are awesome, and the fact that "thefatelectrician" is also from Iowa makes it that much better!!
The amount of inherent respect these guys have for him is incredible.
I've met GrandpaGaming in real life. The dude's awesome. He reminds me of my own grandpa who was a paratrooper in WW 2.
This is, without a single doubt, the best podcast I've ever seen. Been watching y'all for a hot minute now and this one takes the cake🖤🖤🖤
There just something about listen to an old experienced vet that just draws you in and cant stop. Def one of my favorite episodes.
Oh hell yeah. Saturday morning cartoons turned to Saturday Morning Unsub!!
With the Bismarck and ship discussion, I feel like this is the perfect place to bring up my idea that Nick should make a video on the Prinz Eugen, one of my favorite ships
She was with the Bismarck, and escaped, later lost her entire stern and survived, she made the Channel Dash past the British with no damage, survived all of WWII, and then afterwards, she survived TWO NUCLEAR BOMBS and then still was sailing for another FIVE MONTHS and only sank when a small leak couldn't be repaired because she was radioactive
Nick should do a whole series on all the different battleship! I live 10mins from USS New Jersey. I never knew until today that it deleted an island.
More boats in general , the USN , UK and Commonwealth navies have some crazy stories
This gentlemen is a class act. I really enjoy watching him hit those distant targets on battle field. When children make jokes he just shrugs it off. "They are just kids, dont worry about it"
“So you’re low key saying Brandon has a punchable face”
I almost spit my beer out
Haha
Grandpa sounds like an older version of Norm McDonald. Love him! So glad he came on the podcast
Omg yes, I kept thinking it sounded familiar
Came here to say the same thing
That is spot on lol 😂

There are a lot of great episodes, but this is a favorite. Thank you
I gotta agree with Nick, Rising Sun was one of the peak MoH games they came out with.
The cinematic of gunning on that PT boat going between the exploding battleships legit had me enraged. I was actually angry and was shooting zeros down with a vengeance.
- getting that kind of emotion out of a 10 year old is truly an accomplishment.
yea, Rising sun was one of my favorite games man
Medal of honor Frontline will always remain my favorite, followed strongly by European assault and rising Sun 🤙🤙🤙
10? Huh, that's crazy lol. Probably have some serious memories from that though.
@@endless3cho yeah I've been gaming most of my life lol
If you get a chance try out pacific assault. It feels like a more complete version of RS with a better story, but has some similar mission involving Pearl Harbour as act 1
Already know that this is gonna be a banger. Hell yeah grandpa.
Keep it up! Frmr 55B & 31B, '89-'93.
No disrespect to the other guests in the past. Gramps is By far my favorite so far.
It truly reminds me of listening to my grandfather telling stories of his past war experiences.... and puts a huge smile on my face.😂
Most wholesome episode i rewatch every couple weeks. Please have him back on
100% not the guest I would ever expect to see (even though I knew it was coming) but he so fit in. After like 15 minutes he was very in tune with all of you. Too fucking funny.
Lol Grampa Gaming reminds me of my wife's grandfather. Man was a green Beret in Vietnam. Lol super quiet and to himself, but when you get to cutting up he has some great one liners. Thank you guys so much for having him on the show.
The guest i didn't know i wanted! how did i miss this?! One of the best podcasts.
No way, this badass old man is from my hometown! Let’s fucking go
32:00 FMV by legendary animator Don Bluth, also famous for movies such as Anistasia, The Land Before Time, All Dogs go to Heaven, fucking Robin Hood(73) one of my favorite animated movies ever.
I love listening to elder veterans. They’ve got the greatest stories
New boots and an unsub podcast. Today’s a good day. Also, nobody commenting on the fact that Nick just shotgunned his bush light is basically the TLDR of this friend group.
What kind of boots
@@flybygaming9678 limited edition nicks.
Only found this pod cos of Ryan, but binged through a fair few over the last couple of days, this one so far has been the best.
Grandpa Gaming is possibly the most badass Gamer I've ever seen. It'd be an honor to meet him someday
Thank you all for everything you guys do as a fellow vet definitely helped me through rough times. Much love and respect.
Definitely the most wholesome podcast i have seen so far.
Thanks, guys. I’ve been up all night, stressing over my cat coming home heavily wounded. Feels like I finally snapped out of worried parent mode and had a laugh. This podcast is a great stress reliever
This podcast episode was so fucking wholesome. Seeing the guys grouped up like a bunch of kids around a living legend and listening to his stories was brilliant.
Gramps is THE Chad. I love him so much. Such an awesome guy!
"In the navy!" "Dont go there" 😂
