My mom work for him in the early 80s, so you can say he did turn his life around. but she remember that he was really scared of loud noises, and had always had a problem with booze. but a super nice guy.

I love this film. Max Manus was a hero for Norway and when the film was released almost every Norwegian watched it in cinemas all over the country. The real Gunnar Sønsteby was on set and talked to the cast. He first had trouble with the German actors on set (because of the war and what the Nazis did to his friends). Tikken Manus (Max Manus' wife) was still alive when the film was shot in 2009 but I guess she wasn't on set. A few Norwegian actors portrayed Nazis as they spoke excellent German (though you can hear it a little bit that it is not their mother tongue). I think everyone did a great job. Ken Duken, who portrayed Fehmer is a brilliant German actor. You should check out more of his films.

You might like "The King's Choice" also set in Norway at the start of WW2. Very good movie.
I was an extra in the movie. I was one of the 400 "germans" marching down the Karl Johans Gate street. The production wanted to use the norwegian kings guard as germans marching, but the Ministry of Defence would not allow norwegian service members depicting german soldiers/wehrmacht. Instead, they sent 400 norwegian men (me included) to Huseby Military Camp where the kings guard trains, to teach us how to march.
During one of the breaks, Gunnar Sønsteby showed up. I stood there, in a Wehrmacht uniform, and another old man told me he was frightened when he saw me. There was old people crying outside of the production area. The swatstika was flying on the parliament building, just like in 1940, so it was a horrible experience for many elders.
When I grew up, I didn't look up to athletes or sports celebrities. I looked up to the norwegian resistance fighters. To @kelly.preston1986 point - when I saw Gunnar Sønsteby I immediately walked towards him to meet my all time hero. I had to move around some people in a crowded area to get there. When I arrived where he was - he was gone. Just like he disappeared from the germans during the war.

At the height of occupation there were more than 600 000 German troops and military personel stationed in Norway. That's 1 German military for ever 6-7 Norwegian _inhabidant_ at the time.
In the initial invasion, Norway lasted for 3 months... and the resistance fighters were at extreme risk. Hope that brings even more perspective. Most Germans were stationed at strategic places or ports, like Oslo. There were more Germans in total in Norway than the population of capital Oslo.
Norway is a monarchy, and as a side note more than 1500 years of very interesting history, there is a movie about the invasion of Norway too, focused on the effort to keep Norway's sovereignity.
It's called _"Kongens Nei"_ or _"The King's Choice"_

A movie you should see is 'Suicide Mission', it's about the 'Shetland bus' the men who transported weapons and supplies to Norway and refugees to Shetland using small fishing boats during the winter months. Many of the surving men played themselves in the movie, so the acting isn't always the best. but you get to see Captain Larsen himself. He's one of, if not the most decorated allied sailors during WWII.
I'm so proud that Norwegian films have come to such a level that people watch them all around the world, after the movie business got heavily substituted from the state. Lots of love from Norway! 🙂
maybe its mostly due to a talented directing duo that does jobs financed from Hollywood too

You should watch another awesome Norwegian WW2 movie called ''The 12th Man'' about another Norwegian War Hero called Jan Baalsrud.

It's the original made at the end of the 50s. It tells of the same story from the life of Jan Baalsrud, because the story is so remarkable and proves how much a human is capable of going through, and still seeing it through. Meanwhile how the people around him put themselves into great dangers to keep him safe, and were willing to risk everything to keep him hidden and alive to complete his mission. It's truly a remarkable real life World War 2 story. Jan Baalsrud is considered one of the greatest war heroes in Norwegian history from WW2. But he always said himself after the war... ''The real heroes were the civilians who risked everything to keep me safe'' from the Germans who relentlessly hunted him.

im glad you enyoed the movie. im still working on fixing the subttiles for some other norwegian movies. oddly enough to official subtitles arent that great. il reccomend them once the subttiles are completed.

Just stumbled upon this channel, but if you liked the actor playing Max Manus and u didn't yet see this movie, do watch The Headhunter. Its based on a Jo Nesbø book and its no way in hell u can guess the plot finale😁 Max Manus is a masterpiece tho, and as a Norwegian I cant help crying watching it. Ive heard the audiobooks where Max Manus himself reads and talks about his experiences, how it felt losing his friends, how much sheer dumb luck they had... he admits they were inexperienced idiots at first, careless and thought of it as almost a game. And the window jumping was no bravery, just pure panic he said. Its not shown in the movie but he stayed for a month in hospital before they could get him out, rest is showing re the nurse and so on.
"Flame & Citron" is another resistance ww2 great movie to watch that's very similar to Max Manus
Yup I rcommend that too plus "April 9th" a Danish movie set at the German invasion of denmark.

You should watch "Under The Sand" (Danish film) and "The Silent Revolution" (German film). Both are based on true stories.

The Pelle group were the ones who blew up the boats in Oslo
they didn't get credit for it because they were communists
and he pretended to be there.
I suspect you are mixing up different operations, so this claim is incorrect.
I believe the first operation in the film is Operation Mardonius in April 1943 which resulted in the sinking of Ortelsburg and caused damage to Tugela.
The Pelle group was founded in 1944 and carried out a coordinated sabotage operation in November 1944, which I suspect is the one you have in mind. I have never heard of Max Manus or anyone in Oslogjengen or Kompani Linge claiming responsibility for this.
The final sinking in the film is that of Donau in January 1945 which was carried out by Max Manus and Roy Nielsen.
It is however true that the Norwegian authorities, both during and after the war, failed to recognize the role and actions of the Osvald and Pelle sabotage groups: largely because of their communist ties. This culminated in public complaints being made when a memorial status of Max Manus was to be located close to where the Pelle group had carried out its major operation, which resulted in it being moved and a statue in memory of the Pelle group erected. Incidentally, the activists promoting the Pelle memorial cited Gunnar Sønsteby (the young-looking lad in the film) as an ally; he had also collaborated with the Osvald group during the war.
