I wanted a steam loco at work since 1977 when we started Chan. Free fuel, but tons of maintenance and now with the EPA they probably wouldn't allow it unless it was only used for excursions which we don't have. Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
I love finding old rail Aaron. Appreciate the nice comment and your certainly welcome. Thanks so much my friend for watching and may you have a very good day.
Thank you for the nice comment and glad you liked it Johnathan. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Sorry you went all that way and didnt get to ride Dave, im sure the family understood. But you did get us the train pulling in, it looked great.. and you always have interesting stories.. hope they reimbursed you for your effort..
Oh well, things happen specially with old equipment and yes they reimbursed us. We will go back and ride later in the fall when the leaves are turning. That day was rainy and foggy and the views wouldn't have been very good anyway. Aiden was disappointed but they got him a funnel to play with at the store and he thought that was the cat's meow. Thanks so much my friend for watching and may you have a very good day.
Glad you enjoyed and thank you for the nice comment CityTrain. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Dave: In October 1975 Union Pacific 8444, a challenger steam engine, and the freedom train, another steam engine double headed out of Omaha. What an amazing sound and sight. Something like that will never be seen or heard again.
Oh wow glad you got to see it T R. That had to be totally awesome. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
You are right about that and glad you liked it Tom. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Well for Aiden it was disappointing, but still we got to spend some good family time together and we will go back KB when the weather is better. Corrie never gets to go anywhere so just going was a big thrill for her. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
We appreciate the try, Thanks. For a real thrill when it's running at speed, take a walk to the next car, that between car action & noise & smell has stuck with me for almost 70 years. Then again, the newer passenger stuff is probably somewhat better at not scaring little kids!
I'm sure a trip between cars for a young un would be something you would remember Al. Glad this video brought back memories. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Thanks but it's okay we got to still spend some good family time together Fred. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Oh speaking of cabooses Borax plant NBSF,has a green colored old caboose flat side sitting in the siding for crew break room and ride on with hand whistle car when they back into the plant, thanks BigAl California.
That's pretty cool, perfect for a lunch room BigAl. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
LOL, yea I'm sure they did Richard. Missed the Pike festival, we rode speeders on Oil Creek Titusville RR instead. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
@@ccrx6700 We missed the Pike show also 😔 because Baby bobcat has had to fillin behind the concrete Tonka Blocks for the loading dock wall before leaving for a tie banding job 😕. Enjoy your time off 😊.
Several years ago before the big virus, I road this RR. Really enjoyed it. At the time, the diesel was in use. Nearing the end of the line at the turn table along with the gentle swaying of the cars, I fell asleep. The engineer slowed the train to a stop so smoothly that he didn't wake me up. A crew member working the passenger cars had to wake me up. I laughed and said, "send my compliments to the engineer for such a smooth stop." I hope to return and ride the steam train someday.
It is a very nice ride isn't it Daniel. Many people find it easy to fall asleep riding the rails so don't feel bad about that. It's rhythmic and lulls one to sleep. Imagine being a mid night shift train operator trying to stay awake all night! Really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
@@ccrx6700 As a freight conductor I concur. Riding the ex Lehigh up the mountain towards the tunnel in the middle of the night on the way to Jersey in the winter the combination of the sidewall and midnight hours is not a good combination for staying awake.
Your right about that Richard, unwanted things happen on the RR all the time. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Amtrak having problems is an understatement 🤣 i used to take the southwest chief weekly, rode so often i knew the crews on first name basis. Even got to take the controlls of the 42s when they first got them (they got in a bit of trouble for that one but thankfully only a verbal). The saying was (and still is i think) "If you arrive or depart on the same calender day as youre supposed to, we are on time". 72 hour delay was the record when i was on board due to a power unit derailing in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico. Thankfully they were running two so we kept power in the cars since it was the lead locomotive that ended up on the ground. Miss those days
72 hour delay, wow that had to try your patience Ray. Unwanted things happen on the RR all the time, but Amtrak seems to have more than their share of them.... :-) Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
You are right about the Virtual Rail Fan camera on the hotel building; they also have one near the the end of the train platform near the end of the station building. Sorry the train didn't run for you guys and hopefully the family gets another chance to ride soon!
I did not know about the second camera there Patrick, thanks for letting me know that. It was sad Corrie and the boy didn't get to ride, but we had a good family time together anyway. Thanks so much for taking the time to check out the video my friend.
Oh well, things happen specially with old equipment as you know Scott. We will go back and ride later in the fall when the leaves are turning. That day was rainy and foggy and the views wouldn't have been very good anyway. Really appreciate your taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment and glad you liked the video JG. Really appreciate your taking the time to check it out and may you have a very good day my friend.
You looked like a natural in that steam locomotive , and they should had you drive that diesel locomotive Atleast. Loved the video, you have a cool family there my friend… Thanks for sharing…. Loved it 😊😊😊😊
This train requires a certified locomotive engineer to run Bill, and I'm not certified. None of the operators at Cumberland Mine are certified but we just can't go out on any RR and take over the throttle, even the steam loco requires a certified engineer. Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment and glad you like it Bhaskarpal. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
" ... pulled with a GE. Might have to push .." Ouchhh. I saw what you did there! LOL. Notice the loco is long hood running. Took me a bit to figure why the engineer was on other side .. plus the little painted "F" on the "rear" :) Loved the video sir.
Yes that loco was a rare bird Bill, it was built to run long hood forward for whatever reason NS wanted it that way. Glad you liked the video. Really appreciate your taking the time to check it out and may you have a very good day my friend.
Thats very interesting to find out Michael, I did not know that. I wonder if those were cast iron rails you are talking about? Thank you my friend for joining in with us tonight and may you have a very good day.
Well for Aiden it was disappointing, but still we got to spend some good family time together and we will go back Clarence when the weather is better. Corrie never gets to go anywhere so just going was a big thrill for her. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
#1309 certainly is a big critter, my wife could certainly use that to brew a lot of tea for her and coffee for me! 😁 I just took in your video of the trip behind #1309, the "stack talk" you caught would be worth the trip all by itself. Sorry you guys got your train cancelled on you, I think it would have been special for your grandson. I've got a great nephew just a little younger than he is I think, and I think he would get a kick out of a train ride behind a steamer, either one of the WM engines or maybe up at Cass. We're still drying out from Debbie here, some of the rivers are still way up from the drenching they got up in the mountains, and we're downhill from those. Wish you better luck on your next attempt.
Sadly, this year the 1309 did not make any presence. Or at least not yet as of this writing. Who knows what issues are going on behind the scenes. Hope I can see it again soon.
For sure 1309 is just totally awesome Robert. It's okay about not going, we will go back on a better weather day. Glad you guys didn't get washed away, some places got insane amounts of rain I hear. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Now wouldn't that make a valuable addition sitting right beside my Racor switch stand! It would make the perfect train room, but on second thought I need to get a box car and a caboose. Might have to move the garage back to make them both fit tho? :-) Really appreciate your taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Glad you guys had good weather, we went to Titusville for a speeder run or else we would have been at the show David. It's been 20 or so years since I've been there. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Family time is good anytime, but family time with a train ride is better. Sorry you didn't ride this time but maybe it was a blessing in disguise, at least the train didn't breakdown somewhere after leaving the station with two new riders. The storm Debby that brought Maryland rain brough lots of wind and rain to us in South Georgia. The eye of the Cat 1 came within 20 miles to the east of Valdosta area. We live 7 miles west of the city. Fortunate this time, minor damage, just some limbs down and didn't lose power this time. Will watch the steamer vid. Keep them coming.
Excellent point Ben, at least it was at the station and not 10 miles away in the middle of nowhere. We did get our money refunded. Glad you guys didn't lose power! Really appreciate your taking the time to watch and may you have a very good day my friend.
That's what a good railroader like you and me does Michael. Everywhere I go I look to see when and where the rail was made. Thanks so much my friend for joining in with us tonight and may you have a very good day.
Well, boy howdy!! Ironically, I was born in Cumberland, and spent the first 21 yrs. of my life living a few miles West of there. The WM ran behind our house and were still in operation then .. spent many a day "playing" on that railroad, and surrounding areas. I've been a railfan ever since. I'm sure you're well aware that Cumberland was a major rail hub back in the day, and at one point there were 5 different railroads that had trackage through The Narrows .. the WM served quite a few mines in it's heyday. Our family relocated to NC in 1980, but I still call Cumb. home, and go back to visit friends at least once annually. Pretty cool to watch a couple of your vids from there .. as always, thanks for sharing more great content.
Thank you for sharing that Kenneth. Very interesting to hear. You are right about Cumberland being a major RR town back then. CSX still has quite a big yard there and lot's of CSX trains go thru Cumberland. WM made their bread and butter from coal and lumber. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
It is a very nice ride we will go back later in the fall when it's better weather Steve. Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Well for Aiden it was disappointing, but still we got to spend some good family time together and we will go back Gary when the weather is better. Corrie never gets to go anywhere so just going was a big thrill for her. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Sorry you didn't get your ride. I just got back from Durango Co. where we rode the D&RG scenic steam train from Durango to Silverton and back. First time on a steam train and it was a blast!
Wow that's awesome to hear Phil. Someday I sure would love to ride D&RG, that will have to be a retirement trip. My neighbor went there a couple of years ago and showed me all kinds of cool pictures. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment Boxpok. I never got to ride behind 734, sure hope to someday. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
The Western Maryland has always been my favorite RR. I lived just a few blocks from Walbrook Jct. in Baltimore as a young child in the early/mid 1950s. Later, from the period 1965 to 1974, I rode several excursion trains on the WM out of Baltimore to Hagerstown, Cumberland, and Elkins. Beautiful scenery and enjoyable trips! Interesting fact about the WM - the company was noted for using 4 bolt joint bars on their tracks instead of the usual 6 bolt bars. I noticed the 4 bolt bars are still there from WM days.
Thanks for sharing that about the 4 bolt bars shortliner, I did not know that. Had to be a most enjoyable trip from Baltimore to Cumberland, that would be neat. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Love your vacation more Dave open hearth coal fired steel , GE made some of the best engines awesome video thanks Dave and the Mrs and daughter and grandson
Thank you and glad you are enjoying the home movies Gary. But you know I'm partial to EMD locos..... :-) Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Yes Dave, that GE #558 certainly was built for the Norfolk Southern...a DASH 8-32B, or as the railfans simply call it, a B32-8. You can see the original NS logo in the back of the conductor's and brakeman's seats as she rolls by you. Your keen eyes will also spot that there is no control stand on this side of the engine as it rolled past you, and that the long hood stepwell sports the "F" designating that as the front of the engine. Pure NS circa 1989. Also, the snowplow with the clipped wings...NS. She's looking mighty sharp in that WM Fireballs paint scheme! Bummer you guys didn't get to ride, but maybe when y'all return, 1309 might be doing the honors. 🤠👍
For whatever reason you are right Scotty, NS built it to run long hood forward and I was wondering why the engineers stand was on the opposite side. It does look good and reminds me of the black PRR engines. We will go back in better weather hopefully. Had a nice family time day anyway. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Hey Dave, thanks for showing the detail on that track switch, those old hand operated switches are really interesting how they are put together, so many different parts. It seems like all the switches I see are all a little bit different depending on how old, what the track gage is, and what kind of line they are on. Neat stuff there bud.
Thank you for the nice comment and glad you liked the video Earl T. Really appreciate your taking the time to check it out and may you have a very good day my friend.
Yes they did refund out money Trena. For Aiden it was disappointing, but still we got to spend some good family time together and we will go back when the weather is better. Corrie never gets to go anywhere so just going was a big thrill for her. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
I cannot count the number of times I have passed through Cumberland Maryland, either on old US 40 or I-68. I have always wanted to stop to visit the railroad depot in recent years but never had the time to do so. Thanks for showing us around Dave, especially from ground level, or in this case, rail level. 😉
Your certainly welcome Tom, it is a very nice place and you would like it there. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
I hate that you guys weren't able to ride. Especially with this going to be your daughter and grandson's first times. I think I saw a video on Florida Railfan's channel where he chases the Western Maryland Scenic. They just added another one of those GE's to their roster if I remember correctly.
Well for Aiden it was disappointing, but still we got to spend some good family time together and we will go back Shane when the weather is better. Corrie never gets to go anywhere so just going was a big thrill for her. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
You are right about that Lewis, we did spend a nice day together even if we didn't get to ride. Corrie never gets to go anywhere so just going was a big day for her. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Unwanted things happen all the time on the RR as you know Jennifer, but we got to spend some good family time together anyway. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
I understand your frustration when you offered to help and were turned down. Years ago at we were delivering an A/C machine mechanics use or and expensive tire balancer. The automotive dealership had a forklift. An employee working for that company drove the forklift. He was dreadfully terrible at it. I offered to operate the forklift and told him I had a license etc. He turned me down. At that point I told him, if I drive the forklift and something happens to the machine we sold you, we will go good for it. If you drop it, you have to pay for it. There are a lot of people like that and apparently you ran into a couple. For sure they might say the insurance company won't let you help, but on the other hand you can quickly assess the problem and simply offer good advice without even having to lift a finger, so you wouldn't be breaking any insurance company regulations. So I am quite disappointed how you were treated. Thanks for another great video!
Yes but it's okay Louis, first off they didn't know who I was and your probably right about the insurance too. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
That's really great to hear, and it's a lot of fun finding old rail isn't it zillboop. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Oups.....but it was a rainy day. And with Debbie..... I remember long time ago, 2 excursions days on the defunct Lamoille Valley in Vermont. We made on saturday the 50 miles Morrisville Alburgh. It was cloudy and rainy Probably the last train ever toward Alburgh. We had some troubles with the RS3, but she made it. On sunday behind red RS11 we did the other 50 miles, Morrisville to St Johnsbury. We covered the 100 miles of the line with runpast and rain. No more trains will pass under Wolcott covered bridge, the last one that was on railroad service in the US, nor their horseshoe curve. Only bikes pass there now. Hope than when you´ll be back, sun will shine for you.😊😊
Thank you for sharing your story with us Daniel. Like you sun might not have been shining that day but we did get to spend some good family time together. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
I work for another railroad in the area as a bridge inspector, we actually own 3 bridges that the WM operates on and I still got to inspect. One of these days I need to go for a ride with them
That's pretty cool to hear Matt. I need to come and go with you sometime so you can give me some professional info on what all to look for. I inspect our bridges but I'm far from being an actual qualified bridge inspector. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Yep track is what interests me, I like to see how others build and maintain their track Guss. for some reason. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
I used to fish Will's Creek up in Bedford County with my dad. We have a nice train museum in Pueblo, CO not to far from EVRAZ Steel Mill. EVRAZ is in the process of building a new rail mill. It should be finished soon.
That's great to hear they are building a new mill William, thanks for sharing that with me. for some reason. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Well for Corrie and Aiden yes it was Ian, but still we got to spend some good family time together and we will go back when the weather is better. Corrie never gets to go anywhere so just going was a big thrill for her. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
It is very enjoyable ride TF, you would like it. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Hey Dave, took the kids to Kings Island over the weekend and my youngest loves the narrow gauge steam engine they have. I think you need to bring your tamper out and give it a once over😊. It is 3ft gauge so you’ll have to be creative.
I would love to tamp that track clineshaunt, but your right I may need to adjust the wheel spacing.... :-) Great you had a good time with the family. Just like WMSC, while we didn't ride we had a good time being together. Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
@@ccrx6700 Speaking of maintenance, today over my lunch break, I walked over to the NS line to check out a train waiting there crew changing. Looks like they're going to need a new frog at the switch soon. Hope everything continues to go well for you guys over there.
Thank you for the nice comment and glad you liked the video Frank. Really appreciate your taking the time to check it out and may you have a very good day my friend.
You are right about that Shaggy, we've been on Cass two times and loved it both times. I'e got a video of our last ride somewhere on a play list. Awesome how those Shays climb grade. Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Even with no train ride you made a good video out of the day. At least it was not a total waste of time driving all that way, you did get to see a loco. Hope things work out next time. Have a good day
Thank you for the nice comment and glad you liked it Cedaracam. Had a good time with the family despite not riding. Corrie never gets to go anywhere so this was a big deal for her just to go. We went on a speeder ride this weekend and I took her, she loved it. Aiden is autistic and you cant' take him just anywhere. He freaks out in crowds but with so few people there he was just fine. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
@@ccrx6700 Great you got the speeder ride and Corrie enjoyed it. Aiden would of had a really good day if the train had run that day with only you few left to ride on it. Sure hope you get there another time on a quiet day. Just now over here everywhere is busy with schools out. I guess the same your side too.
I was there today taking measurements of the Caboose! My phone says measurements as follows: 33 feet long. 9 feet and 5" wide. I could not get the height because the phone's lighting was not enough. Pretty interesting that the coaches separated; I guess you can call that a "Divorce" in new railroad terms. lol Great vid. :)
Wow that's pretty cool and thanks for sharing that Bassotronics. Divorce, we have a lot of those at Cumberland..... LOL Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Yes that would have been cool to get together Dave. We will be going back sometime in the fall hopefully. Email me and I will let you know if and when we are going back. It will have to be on a Saturday since Aiden has to go back to school. Email: peppypetsdaily@yahoo.com
No steam? Did they forget ignite the coal, or take on water? Joking! The weakend the 2 unit railcar train last for 2 trips. Then we had to unhook one unit. Luckiky the single unit train had enough capacity. As always, a relaxed video.
They haven't ran steam trains much at all this year, I think there is a problem with 1309 Stefan. Plus just not anybody can run that big loco. Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment and glad you liked it darnoldie. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

@@ccrx6700But Dave, sometimes the rain and fog can make for some very intriguing, interesting and sort of eerie/creepy videos. You never know how the weather can turn an outing into something out of the ordinary. It's why when I railfanned, I would go out in all kinds of weather conditions and video trains. However severe weather like tropical storms or hurricanes, those were definitely no-goes. However, thunder/lightning⚡storms, I videoed from inside my vehicle under those conditions when one would pop up suddenly, which happens in Florida quite regularly. But I always loved to video trains in misty rain and foggy conditions, especially if I could do it from a cemetery that was next to the tracks in foggy weather, talk about some eerie/creepy feel, and if there was a crossing the train had to blow the horn, and ring the bell, even better.🤣🤣🤣🤣
How cool is that! Hope you can get out and see it Dave. Let me know if you do. We saw a Big Boy on display at Steamtown, but to see one under steam would make the hair stand up on the back of my neck.
@@ccrx6700 big boy came thru in 2019, on its eastren leg of it inaugural run...it overnighted...off the u.p. main line, in the beverly yards in cedar rapids ia. I plan on seeing it on a run by...as well as its overnight stop... be safe dave!!!
Love the T-Shirt, Dave!😀 EDIT: Oh, man - LOVE the 1945 rail!😎 And a Fun Fact: In the late '80's, Coors Brewing would ship cases of Coors to their distributor in Miami, FL in insulated box cars - not refrigerated, just insulated and they'd pack all those cans in their TIGHT. In the 3-ish days it took the train to get to Miami, the temp of the cans barely dropped 5 F!! At the Miami distributor (where the rail cars could actually drive in - it was that huge) they then would be refrigerated. Could still be done that way, I do not know.☺
I too love that old rail Patrick, specially Carnegie rolled rail. Just that was WW 2 era, amazing isn't it. Really appreciate your taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Rode the Tracks and Yaks rail bikes from Frostburg to Cumberland, rode the WMSR train back to Frostburg. Awesome trip! Side note #1309's sister #1308 is on static display in Huntington WV.
She wants to do the bike ride sometime David, cool you got to go on it! Thanks for the info about 1308, I did not know that. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
If you live close to a SEPTA station take them for a ride on a professional railroad. At least you have scheduled train service. If you lived up in my neck of the woods I'd put you on a NJ Transit train. Sorry that the crew was disappointed. Take care and God bless.😎🚂🚃🚃🚃✝
Yes it was disappointing for her and the boy, but at least we got to spend some family time together Gary and we will go back on a better weather day hopefully in the fall. If we go on NJT, I'm wearing my orange NJT hard hat and riding with you! Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Awww gee whizz 😢 that just sucks family didn’t get to enjoy …. Here in Michigan?? Once a year they fire up the old steam engine A run from Indiana to Michigan on an old scenic track… It the absolute greatest ! When I was a kid I lived in Ohio a besides the old Wabash cannonball tracks an seen it a few times … 😂 I should be in jail for life for the amount of United States currency I laid on the tracks an defaced government property ( yep it was against the law as well laying coins on the track 🤷🏻♂️ I was a young kid ) an after the train went I’d walk the tracks for weeks looking for the egg coins .. lol I found about 5% rest must of stuck to the wheels till their was nothing left …. lol this old man now wishes I had the coins back I would be rich😂 back in the days a penny was near pure copper an a nickel was nickel dimes an quarters actually had silver in them 50 cent pieces?? Like a silver dollar always shot out from the track a wheel🤔🤔 2 a.m.? She would go through an hear the whistle blowing at 3 intersections … I remember finding Lt. blue glass marbles between the rails over the years I have lost track of all but 1 .. back in them days the power lines AN phone lines ran down the tracks… I loved winter time the engine would blow snow 20-25 feet each side of the tracks …. lol that’s back in the late 50’s early 60’s …. I will always have a soft spot I. My ❤ for the old engine s….. I seen spikes 1/2 out seen nuts missing off of splice plates… a kid living beside the rails😂😂
Thank you for the nice comment and for sharing your story about the coins Joe. That was the thing to do, put coins on the rails and smash them flat. Your right steam locos in the winter time are awesome and those steam whistles blowing in the night you just can't compare it to a sound now. Glad you enjoyed and thanks for the tip Jarrett, I will try to do that. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
well some times you get the train, and other times you do not. you never know with older equipment things go sideways. then you have to rebuild something. did you get a refund or a vouchers for another day? on site we have some Carnegie rail dated 1936 july and illinois 1943 september and maryland 1937 may will have to check on the cooling process. great video Dave, hope your trip home was uneventful and smooth!
Unwanted things happen all the time on the RR as you know Barry, but we got to spend some good family time together anyway. Yes we got our money refunded and will go back. I love to find Carnegie rail. Someday I will do a video on the cooling process but no one does open hearth cooling anymore, it's against the law for rails. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Sorry you didn't get to ride Dave, but you made an interesting video without the ride! All railroads have problems at times as you say "That's railroading!" In fact that's life!
Your right Raymond that's life isn't it. But we got to spend some good family time together anyway. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Sorry you didn't get to ride Mr. Dave. I guess Newtons other law was applied, "whatever can happen, will". Looks like a lot of neat stuff to see there at least. You guys will get to ride some other time, I'm sure.
It's okay, we will go back Rick when there is a better weather day, it started raining hard just after we left so we would have rode in the rain. for some reason. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
I mentioned in you last video about the big south fork scenic railroad. You could make a business trip out of it too. There is lots to see and do in the area. If you time it right you could catch a moonbow at Cumberland falls that just a few miles away. It all in the heart of the Daniel Boone national park. Here is a video of the railroad and coal camp you visit on the ride. ruclips.net/video/NwQspvP9E40/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Thank you for sharing that Jughead, it looks alike an awesome place to visit and will add it in on the retirement bucket list. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out this video and may you have a very good day my friend.
@@ccrx6700 Googling maps says it's around a 7 hour trip from your mine to Sterns Kentucky. That would be a great trip on that Christmas layoff the mines do. I'm pretty sure they still do the Polaroid Express ride dering ride dering the holidays. There is no doubt that you could spend most of that time off exploring the area. Within a hour or two drive from Sterns you have Cumberland falls, lake Cumberland. Not even at Kennywood enjoyed the video and be safe the Fruit Growers is from the west coast originally they have one at a rail museum by us here in Southern California.

You are right about that Mike, love those old cars too. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
A friend of mine owned that 558 and leased it to WMSR, I believe that they bought it, was a former NS locomotive. They do a good job there.. did a cab ride in one of the GP30s we had a pair on our train. Turned them on the table up at Frostburg.
Your right Kevin NS built it from a kit supplied by GE. Pretty cool your friend once owned it. I do like the black color on it, reminds me of the PRR black locos. Yes WMSC does a good job, it is an impressive place and a fun ride too. The only problem with 1309 is they can't use that turntable, it's too long to fit on it. Really appreciate your taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
I dont know anything about that train nedj, will have to do some research on it. Thank you for sharing that. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
First time I rode the WMSR was in 1989 behind a beautiful steam engine. I believe it was ex Canadian Pacific. Belonged to a fellow named Ross Roland if I recall. Many times afterwards in various diesels painted for WM. Last time in 2016 we rented the caboose, unfortunately a rock slide shut half the line.
It is a very good ride isn't it Jim. That steam engine you rode behind was most likely #734. It hasn't been running for years for some reason. You were lucky. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Like airlines that cancel flights or in this case train rides when they don't have enough custmers to make it worthwhile. I've gone to ride trains before and they never even opened up to sell tickets. You can't get mad because they operate on shoestring crew and funds.
Your right about their operating budget, they sorely need a lot of ties replaced but no money to do it Gary. Not enough riders could very well have been the reason or a good part of why they didn't run. At 11;30 when the train was supposed to leave there were less than 50 people there.
Love those Auto Couplers on that Steamer just like we have here inherited from you guys...love to see you explain how they work both the normal and the under one for such a simple device they do a hell of a lot before these we had screw couplings lots of folk got injured and died...thanks Dave loved this regards Doc from Down Under...psss we are still running in revenue freight Bull Nose EMDs here some have been refurbished .. take a look at this Dave and friends ruclips.net/video/l_jQZ5My-mE/видео.html again regards Doc..PSSSS thanks heartfelt for the boy but yes that's railroading if its in his blood it wont matter....God bless
Thanks for the suggestion Doc from Down Under, that would make a very interesting video on how couplers work. Really appreciate your checking out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
We did get our money refunded that day K4 Productions. At least if the train was going to break down it happened at the station and not 10 miles out on track in the middle of nowhere. Really appreciate your taking the time to watch and may you have a very good day my friend.
As always, another wonderful video Dave. Thank you for taking the time to share your adventures. Also, is there any way to get ahold of one of those hats? Always thought that was a cool logo.

NS 3558 Wolvesone, check out your photos and let me know. I would imagine it was built from a GE kit at Juniata. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

When you get back to work, you need to tell the bosses that your railroad needs a steam locomotive about the same size as 1309😊😊
I wanted a steam loco at work since 1977 when we started Chan.
Free fuel, but tons of maintenance and now with the EPA they
probably wouldn't allow it unless it was only used for excursions
which we don't have. Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Rolled in 1945, wow! Can always count on you to really dedicate the proper time to those small details we love, thank you!

Sorry you went all that way and didnt get to ride Dave, im sure the family understood. But you did get us the train pulling in, it looked great.. and you always have interesting stories.. hope they reimbursed you for your effort..
Oh well, things happen specially with old equipment and yes they
reimbursed us. We will go back and ride later in the fall when
the leaves are turning. That day was rainy and foggy and the
views wouldn't have been very good anyway. Aiden was disappointed but they got him a funnel to play with at the store
and he thought that was the cat's meow. Thanks so much my

Dave: In October 1975 Union Pacific 8444, a challenger steam engine, and the freedom train, another steam engine double headed out of Omaha. What an amazing sound and sight. Something like that will never be seen or heard again.

We appreciate the try, Thanks. For a real thrill when it's running at speed, take a walk to the next car, that between car action & noise & smell has stuck with me for almost 70 years. Then again, the newer passenger stuff is probably somewhat better at not scaring little kids!
I'm sure a trip between cars for a young un would be something
you would remember Al. Glad this video brought back memories.

Sorry Dave. But thanks for showing us some cool stuff. Now on to your 1309 video.
Thanks but it's okay we got to still spend some good family

That's pretty cool, perfect for a lunch room BigAl. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Hey Dave 👋,
The VR camera 📷 people called and saw you waving 👋 ,
Just as the 2 cops 👮♂️ came up behind you😮😂😂😂...
LOL, yea I'm sure they did Richard. Missed the Pike festival, we rode speeders on Oil Creek Titusville RR instead. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

We missed the Pike show also 😔 because Baby bobcat has had to fillin behind the concrete Tonka Blocks for the loading dock wall before leaving for a tie banding job 😕.
Many people find it easy to
fall asleep riding the rails so don't feel bad about that. It's rhythmic and lulls one to sleep. Imagine being a mid night shift
train operator trying to stay awake all night!

The best laid plans.... Oh well Dave if anyone knows the issues a railway can face it's you! Safe travels, and there's always next time 🙂
Your right about that Richard, unwanted things happen on the RR all the time.
Unwanted things happen on the RR all the time, but Amtrak seems to have
more than their share of them.... :-) Appreciate very much your
taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very
good day my friend.
You are right about the Virtual Rail Fan camera on the hotel building; they also have one near the the end of the train platform near the end of the station building. Sorry the train didn't run for you guys and hopefully the family gets another chance to ride soon!
I did not know about the second camera there Patrick, thanks
for letting me know that. It was sad Corrie and the boy didn't
get to ride, but we had a good family time together anyway.
Thanks so much for taking the time to check out the video my friend.

You looked like a natural in that steam locomotive , and they should had you drive that diesel locomotive Atleast. Loved the video, you have a cool family there my friend… Thanks for sharing…. Loved it 😊😊😊😊
This train requires a certified locomotive engineer to run Bill,
and I'm not certified. None of the operators at Cumberland Mine
are certified but we just can't go out on any RR and take over
the throttle, even the steam loco requires a certified engineer.
Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Don't know why but always happy to see the introduction🙂🙂
Some of the first rails made in America were made just up the road from Cumberland...a place called Mt Savage.
Thats very interesting to find out Michael, I did not know that.
I wonder if those were cast iron rails you are talking about?
Thank you my friend for joining in with us tonight and may
you have a very good day.

It's okay about not
going, we will go back on a better weather day. Glad you guys
didn't get washed away, some places got insane amounts of
rain I hear. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Dave you need to ask Santa for a real caboose for Christmas with next day delivery.
Now wouldn't that make a valuable addition sitting right beside
my Racor switch stand! It would make the perfect train room,
but on second thought I need to get a box car and a caboose.
Might have to move the garage back to make them both fit tho? :-)
Really appreciate your taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

Excellent point Ben, at least it was at the station and not 10
miles away in the middle of nowhere. We did get our money

That's what a good railroader like you and me does Michael. Everywhere I go I look to see when and where the rail was made. Thanks so much my friend for joining in with us tonight and may you have a very good day.
I always liked the fireball design of the Western Maryland.
You and me both Anthony, it's really cool. Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
You are right about Cumberland being a major RR town back
then. CSX still has quite a big yard there and lot's of CSX trains go thru Cumberland. WM made their bread and butter from coal
and lumber. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

I've ridden the WMSR a lot, mostly behind 734, sure miss those days. And we all miss John Helmstetter who was always kind to us railfans.
Thanks for sharing that about the 4 bolt bars shortliner, I did
not know that. Had to be a most enjoyable trip from Baltimore
to Cumberland, that would be neat.
For whatever reason you are right Scotty, NS built it to run long hood forward and I was wondering why the engineers stand
was on the opposite side. It does look good and reminds me
of the black PRR engines. We will go back in better weather
hopefully.
Really appreciate your taking the time to check it out and may
you have a very good day my friend.
Aww... Did they offer a refund? Sad you missed that time's ride, but looking forward to next time, hopefully! Thank you for bringing us along today.😊

I cannot count the number of times I have passed through Cumberland Maryland, either on old US 40 or I-68. I hate that you guys weren't able to ride. Especially with this going to be your daughter and grandson's first times. I think I saw a video on Florida Railfan's channel where he chases the Western Maryland Scenic. They just added another one of those GE's to their roster if I remember correctly.

Yes but it's okay Louis, first off they didn't know who I was and

Oups.....but it was a rainy day. And with Debbie.....
I remember long time ago, 2 excursions days on the defunct Lamoille Valley in Vermont. We made on saturday the 50 miles Morrisville Alburgh. It was cloudy and rainy
Probably the last train ever toward Alburgh.

Iam like you dave, i go look at the railroad, when your a trackman you look at the track.i rather walk the track than ride the train.

and maintain their track Guss. for some reason.

Hey Dave, took the kids to Kings Island over the weekend and my youngest loves the narrow gauge steam engine they have. I think you need to bring your tamper out and give it a once over😊. It is 3ft gauge so you’ll have to be creative.

Love the T-Shirt, Dave!😀
EDIT: Oh, man - LOVE the 1945 rail!😎 And a Fun Fact: In the late '80's, Coors Brewing would ship cases of Coors to their distributor in Miami, FL in insulated box cars - not refrigerated, just insulated and they'd pack all those cans in their TIGHT.

Thank you for the nice comment and for sharing your story
about the coins Joe. That was the thing to do, put coins on
the rails and smash them flat. Your right steam locos in the winter time are awesome and those steam whistles blowing

Like airlines that cancel flights or in this case train rides when they don't have enough custmers to make it worthwhile. I've gone to ride trains before and they never even opened up to sell tickets. You can't get mad because they operate on shoestring crew and funds.
Your right about their operating budget, they sorely need a lot
of ties replaced but no money to do it Gary. Not enough riders
could very well have been the reason or a good part of why
they didn't run. At 11;30 when the train was supposed to leave
there were less than 50 people there.
