Dr. Phil, just like Oprah, loves to exploit a person's misery, tragedy, or humiliation. I seriously doubt the uncle knew his nephew "son" was going to show up in drag on stage. He probably expected a one on one with his nephew without the drag, and if the nephew truly wanted to have this conversation he would not have shown up on stage like that, just out of respect. The nephew has every right to be whatever he wants to be, and dress up however he wants, but he knew his uncle was not going to be comfortable with it and would be embarrassed on tv. Dr. Phil also knew it would be good ratings if the nephew showed up that way. It would be completely different if he revealed his new look to a classmate, co-worker, or neighbor. But that is family. (*The video is labeled "Dad Dies...", when in fact that man is his uncle- see 1:21 .)

I can speak from my own experience as the father of a trans man that you only fail your child as a father if you are not there for them to help them through regardless of the outcome.... but I can relate to the tears, because in some sense I had lost my daughter, that in a sense she had died. Even writing this is hard, and brings tears to my eyes when I recall it.
