Often, smaller items are looked over by new builders looking to make a name for themselves because they are looking for "that one build" that they can sell for a ton of money. They aren't considering the cost of the build and the time spent making it. Ultimately any business comes down to profit margins. I'll give you a few examples of how selling items that anyone can afford can generate crazy sales with minimal cost of goods sold!
Sometimes we overthink things when the most profitable items we are looking past. Let's change that.

I hate to look stupid but how do I get to your pkans
Good question
All his plans are on etsy
I just looked at them 7.50 awesome price
I want the plans
I've been saving my money at min wage job. I've been slowly buying tools. This is the video I need.
I've been promoting the small squirrel items as Doll furniture for American Girl size dolls.
I like it!
How's it working? That is a fantastic idea.
@@julieniemeyer925 really well. Mostly gifts but you can add paint to personalize the pieces for different dolls. I also too the basic garden basket idea, made the slats longer, attached them to the centers of the end pieces, and modified the tops of the ends for a doll bed (Some straight cuts and one with a jigsaw cut to resemble a castle). I haven't tried to sell much, but if you have 18' dolls in mind a tweak here and there gets you into the "rustic farmhouse" doll furniture business, and those people (my wife included!) spend big buck on that kind of thing!
At 6;07, I like the way you cut half the board then flipped the board to finish the cut,, Never reaching over the blade! Damn good thinkin! just 1 more week and I'll be back in my own woodshop!
That’s exactly right! Thank you and congrats on the new shop!
I was wondering why he flipped the board like that. I never thought about it like that. I like it.
I built a picnic table squirrel feeder last year for my wife and in two days the corn on the cob was covered in ants. Lol
You are an amazing teacher, not only for builds, but the business of profits! Thank you for your awesome content!
I completely agree with the high profit, low cost. Don't care what it is, that's how I roll. I enjoy making stuff with my hands, with my family and friends. Thank You my friend, for another great video.
Right on
I'm not sure how squirrel feeders will sell around here......they are considered more of a nuisance than anything. BUT I'm still going to make a couple.....they are so darn cute. THANKS Matthew.
They are cute! Lol
I dont care much about feeding the squirrels, but my nieces would love these simply as doll furniture. Possibly a very inexpensive holiday gift.
I am also a RN in the Louisville/southern IN area! I absolutley love your videos! All of them! Doing crafts/woodworking really helps destress after working, which is why I started. Just recently finished my she shed! Thank you for the inspiration! Honestly knowing you are a nurse also really sealed the deal for me subscribing to you , I usually do not subscribe! Thank you!
Do you have any fall builds? It would be cool to get a jump on the change of seasons sales wise
Coming Very Soon!
The chickens saw the builds and ran around like a bunch of wild turkeys with their heads cut off!
The squirrels were so excited like a bunch of live wires they went NUTS!
And the birds were so shocked when they arrived early to have such a selection then didn't waste anytime to chill cause they were POOPED!
💩 lmao
And i heard you sent the Ducks all the bills and they said... What a bunch of QUACK!
They called Fowl!
Man I love your videos my kids made the picnic tables for Mother’s Day!! Turned out great made them with nothing but hand tools. Now we got to make the swing. Thank you for posting these made the best memories for me and my kids
That is awesome! Keep it up!
I love all of the different builds. I have to say my favorite would be the picnic table.
Thanks!
You are 100 percent right about the full size chairs. I call it the WalMart throw away mentality. Another great build! Thank you!😊
Yes! Thank you!
Both of your kids knocked it out of the park! And you knock it out just a little further. Three awesome builds, but the chair is the winner! Get ready, cuz they’ll be blowing you away pretty soon. Thanks for all you do!😃
Boy that is a tough choice! I like the table for ease-of-build. I like the chair with bucket for the accuracy to the full size. But my favorite might be the swing. It's so original! You and your kids are brilliant!
Thank you!!
My favorite is the swing but definitely will try to build all of them. Great job to all
Good choice!
I am an economist and amateur woodworker, best coverage of profits I have heard in a long time. Nailed it! Pun intended.
Lol thanks!
Normally not a plans in the hands person, but when I realized that these feeders just became a large part of Christmas build, had to get the set. Thank you for what you do for our community.
The power of smalls is true! Those planter boxes were Killing it this Spring!
I love the swing. I feel like it's the most unstable for the squirrels to get on to which would add to my fun of watching. The swing gets the vote.
Lol nice!
LOVED watching Norm and T.O.H as a kid
The porch swing is just to darn cute 🥰 but I would say a bucket would be better to feed because I wouldn't want my poor little squirrel to sit down on a screw 😅😊
Lol
My vote is to buy as a set and make my garden a squirrel haven - up high!! Really cute builds, all three!
I hope you do. when building small things like this I really concentrate on finger placement 🤨
You and your kids are so creative. I LOVE the Adirondack chair version. You nailed it!
Thank you!
Just looked at some local prices and thought you could also buy the flat tops and do the dog ears yourself.
If I build one of those chairs, it won't be a feeder for squirrels but leave out the corn cob screw and sit a teddy bear on the chair, it will be a popular decor item. Thank you for making the video.
Those watches are very nice. Great builds. It’s your channel, but let the kids win.
Lol thanks. Most families let the kiddos win. They are both to the age where it needs to be earned... and then we discuss what could have been done differently. They have passed me up in several trades already. I will be super excited when they pass me up with carpentry as well. I'll know I've done my job as a father.
Love your Smalls Videos! Keep them coming!
There will be a lot of happy squirls in my neighborhood this fall!
Lol
Congratulations on your sponsorship; well deserved.
Thank you!
You're the fourth or fifth channel I follow to do an Adirondack chair themed video in the last two or three weeks...
Oh yea? But were any as small as mine?!?! Hopefully mine was unique in comapision. 😬
Love the Adirondack with the bucket!
Thanks!
Thanks for answering my question on Patreon about the Adirondack chair! In my area the local store sells them for over $200 a piece, so I was looking to maybe build my own (not to sell, just for around the firepit).
My vote goes for your Adirondack chair.
The chair is a winner. Matthew you always hit home runs. I will be building some of these for my sales table.
Thanks! Good luck!
Where did you find the little bucket? I have been making the picnic table squirrel feeders and selling them for over a year. Always have them on my table
I always love the ideas your kids and you come up with. For me its a hard call between the front porch swing one and the chair but my vote goes to the swing. Great work as always!
Thanks for sharing!!
This one is tough. I mean, all 3 are winning designs! If I consider each of these as squirrel feeders as presented, then my vote goes for the Adirondack chair design with a modification of the corn cob screw location to be on the chair. My decision is based upon placement of the feeders and squirrels seem to prefer to eat high off the ground and more out of site of predators. However, if I consider these designs for creative uses, the Adirondack chair comes in last place because of the attached platform. It looks like it is required for stability. My winner for most uses other than as a squirrel feeder is the picnic table. Now, as a gardener, my personal favorite is the swing. I’d remove the screw and secure a small terracotta pot or two and fill with a fern and a vine. I may need to make the build a little larger or at least slightly longer. My decisions are from the customer’s perspective rather than the seller’s perspective which considers costs and profit. I can’t remember which one was able to get two projects from 1 picket or which one had the best profit margin, etc. I’m just very impressed with all of the final presentations. ~ Rob
Thank you for that Rob!
My husband and I both vote on the porch swing !!!
Thank you!
Gotta go with the swing! My granddaddy and grandmothers front porch had swings on both ends that got a good workout when us grandkids got there. Love all your stuff!!
While both of the squirrel chairs are both adorable, I love the bucket better!
Thanks!
Well done! Especially the explanation of profit margins for Smalls. It's not rocket science, Make a decent Profit or don't build it! All I make are smalls! The AD Chair takes me about 15 min with pallet wood. I use jigs and a 23g pin nailer and glue. My Goal is to sell 500 this year.
Nice!!
All of the builds were fantastic! I honestly thought Matt that you were going to have a really hard time beating these kids. But I have to say you came out on top once again. Matt, my vote is for you. Awesome build guys!
Lol Thank you!
Love the breakdown of the margins. Great work by all of you!
Thank you!
You are preaching in this video about profit margins. I love it!
I'd have to say the swing and chair are a tie. I love how both look! Good job, family!
I love them all ❤
My vote goes to the swing 😊
Great job on all the projects 👌
Love it... Thank you sir
I love all of the squirrel feeders but if I had to pick one I love the swing the best :)
Thanks!
I like them all but I would say the chair is my favorite. Have several of your plans Mathew and love them. Already been selling planter boxes, garden baskets and trellis. Even made your garden arbor out of pressure treated lumber and sold it. Gonna add the chair to my projects. Thanks for all you do!
Glad you like them! Keep it up!
I love this! I've built several picnic squirrel tables from scraps before you did the video. I'm known for my adirondack chairs that are pretty fancy. So to reinforce your breakdown of profit, I sell my chairs for $300-$350 each and it takes about 15 to 20 hours to make one. I have an outlet for my cedar materials, but I still spend about $90 on materials. In the end it breaks down to less than $15 an hour for profit. I've definitely learned that the money is in the smaller builds! But for certain people I will still build the full size chairs. It has made demand for my chairs that much higher because I don't make many of them. In the spring I make a few versions of planters that are quick, but beautiful builds. Thanks for all the inspiration!
That is a very low hourly rate. Especially if you factor in the cost of buying your tools, the shop space, and small things needed like screws, sand paper, stain, etc.
@daddybear236 Absolutely!! That's why I build the full size chairs for basically family and close friends!! I build firetables too, and when I want a big profit I do a table or a bunch of planters. I can build 5 planters in a day at $75 each of profit. Most of my woodworking is for my mental health, but I like to buy new stuff with its profits too
@@quadsquadracingable same here. I do woodworking as a hobby and stress relief. I gift the stuff to friends. Never manage to sell anything at a reasonable price. People expect to buy from "classified ads" as 1/3 of the IKEA stuff. Not even worth the hassle to communicate with them.
That Front Porch Swing is looking good. and i Love the chair!!! i have to through your videos as it has been a min since i been on the tube....
Love your videos
Keep it going
These are all cool. I do love the squirrel swing, a great creative build. However, I don't think the squirrels would enjoy the movement too much. Love the Adirondack chair, especially with the screw or bucket option. This was too close to call. 😂
I’m so glad I found your channel. Good stuff buddy!
Well this is a pretty hard choice. I like them all so yes is all I have to say, all are easy and very decorative. Another fun video to watch. Thanks for all you do for this community.
Thanks so much 😊
My favorite is the porch swing!
Awesome!
As usual it's awesome!!
I just want to give a shout out 🎉 for the PICNIC TABLE, I think the only reason it doesn’t get more votes is because we have seen different versions of them around for years. The swing and the chair are more unique. I truly think that if you make any full size item into a cute “smalls” you will have good luck with them. There is something about mini’s that people like, a small version in an area of interest to any consumer will at minimum raise an eyebrow or two 😊
I agree with you. It’s something about the mini things that people like!
Can i just say your projects fascinate me. I love creativity! My daughter is a caroenter/drywaller/painter and ive been showung her your videos
I built two chairs. and a table from the scraps left over. It cost me $125 for rough and S3S black locust, plus screws, plus time. Most people are not going to pay for a hand-crafted Adirondack chair when they can buy cheap throwaway Chinese/Indian crap from HD and Lowes. So I totally agree. People will waste their money on tchotchkes and such before they will buy higher-end quality items. I love your channel. Keep it coming.
I love the swing!❤
Yeaaaa. He did well. I was afraid of that one.
Great job love it
Always a awesome tutorial. My vote is the chair! Good luck to all 3.
This was such a good business education video. Love the little things.
Great video. Keep it going, sir!
Thats fab, you're so talented 😊
Thank you! 😊
Great info! Thanks!
@@matthewpeech.. what did I win?
Great build and love the watches.
Thank you!
Like many have already commented, it’s a tough call. All great! I’m from an area just outside the Adirondack’s so they are very popular in my area. I think the chair gets the edge just because I think they would sell the best here. Love the challenge idea. Keep doing more of these!!! Reminds me of John Malecki’s 3 version builds!
Thanks for sharing!
I like! Thankyou!
The porch swing the best gets my vote.
Hola! 🖐What a spectacular video; "Follow the Margin" is absolutely the best advice I have heard in a long time. Then to add to the value of this video you go step by step on this build, SUPER AWESOME!👏Take care and have a good one, Adios!👊
Seeing how Im from the Adirondacks, lol the chair has my vote. Want to make these as well, great job.
Lol fair enough!
Love all the videos Matthew...keep'em comin. I wish we had lumber prices like yours here in Ontario Canada
Thanks 👍
They are all great Matt, but I vote for the swing. It's cute and creative!
Thank you! Sounds like most people agree!
Loved all the builds, but... I am partial to the chair build myself..
I love the idea of working with the cedar fence pickets.. $$$$
Thanks...
Awesome, thank you!
Very nice
I sudden came upon your wonderful channel. I’m truly enjoying it. Watching from the Caribbean Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 very cool 👍
As always Mathew sir honesty and great information in your videos sir
I appreciate that!
That’s sweet!! Sorry kids. Dad has the OG design 🙌
Lol thanks!
These squirrel chairs are amazing Matt!!! I've been looking for ideas for Fall items and these will sell in our area. Also, eagerly anticipating (hint hint) your upcoming video on Fall items that sell (since I'm hitting a creative block at the moment). You know...that video that you're gonna drop soon. Yeah...that one 😉
Lol you know how I roll. I think you can count on that one 😉
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking excellent 👌
I'm also looking for it
Honestly, I'll probably build all three😅. As far as my favorite, it has to be the Adirondack chair.
Thanks!
They are all awesome, my vote goes to the chair
Thank you!
People think squirrels are cute. They do not understand the damage they can do to your house or they wouldnt be building these lol I have a different reason for liking these. Very cute and sell very quickly as bait stands as well. Love the videos bud keep'em rollin'
Very true lol thanks!
All of them are great but the chair takes my vote!
Thanks.
Hola from Texas .
Another awesome video !
Hey, thanks!
Those watches are awesome!
They turned out great! Thank you.
I like the picnic table best ❤
Love that chair. I was planning on doing the swing but I going make that little chair.
Nice video, i have alot to learn about carpentry, these videos help tremendously. Thank you!
Nice!
Thanks!
tough call!!!! the chair and swing each are unique but the table lends itself to sets, ie 9 -12 - 15. i built the table first cuz it was easy and i used scraps from fan trellis's and planters. that's another plus for all 3 - using cut offs from other projects. unfortunately my wife got to the table before the squirrels....it's a plant stand for a peace lily.
love your channel. highly insprational
Following the margin , thanks for helping this simple new guy out.
BTW, I have drank the Peech Tea …. :)
Lol thanks for the support
CHAIR IS SO COOL. IT GETS MY VOTE!
Love your channel
Thanks so much.
Its a real tight call between all 3 designs but im honestly loving the swing!
Thanks!
At least the squirrels can have something to sit on
I think you are all winners love them all have never seen the swing or the chair . And Matt I think you are the true winner here you should be so proud of your kids that they come up with such great ideas and make and sell these ideas great job kids 👏👏👏 keep up the amazing work
Thanks 👍
