Thanks for this new planter idea. I have built 10 each of your last four planters which I have taken to my local Flea Market and rented the space next to flower and tree sellers. I asked if I could borrow some of their flowers and trees to stage my planters. I told the sellers than I would tell any of my customers were I got them from. They gave me a discount if I sold their plants with my planters. I sold every planter I brought before 1pm and 90% of the plants I had in them. This seller said I could use some of their double spaces new weekend to sell my planters and their plants. Thank you again,

I built two of the 20 inch ones today. I tried the pocket hole method but the wood kept splitting out so I just used a counter sink bit and drilled out the holes on the legs to hold the boards. I also increased the width of the bottom slats from 1/2 inch to 1 inch so those pocket holes would not split out. Also as soon as I posted them in a woodworking group I'm in they wanted to know everything so I shared your video. 05/03/2023

Lighthouses would make for a cool picket build I think.
I live on the coast and a tonne of people love the look of wooden garden lighthouses, built as short and as tall as 2ft-10ft tall.
Every time I see one I think how easy it would be to make one out of fence pickets or pallet wood.

An unexpected request I’ve had is to make the base of the planter (whatever the style) to be able to fit a Lowe’s or Grainger 5 gal bucket. I didn’t think much of it at the time. But putting that in the description of my products increased my sales. All it took was taking some of Matt’s designs (which I’ve bought the plans for) and tweaking the measurements. Oh, also people want the top of the planter to be at least an inch proud of the lip of the bucket.

This was an easy decision to buy the project plans. The one thing I did a bit differently was cutting the 45 degree cuts first, and on a longer than needed piece of wood. I cut the 45 degree angles first in case I screwed up (which I did). That way I just chopped off the offending miter cut without ruining the whole piece. Practicing on scrap lumber before hand helped too since my old DeWalt chop saw doesn't have a shadow or laser cutting guide.

I made 1 with pallet wood and 2x4's. Measures 9' in total length. My planters are not this nice, but they work. Put small spacers between the 2x4's on the ends and a couple along the length.

I found that when you set the cross boards flush with the outside of the frame - the corners split on the legs when you drive in the pocket screws... Even tried switching to 1" just regular screws and it still split. Had to remake 2 of the legs...
In the end I used a 1/4 piece of a birch wood to inset the cross boards and had NO problems after that.
Plus the legs stand out a little more proudly now too!!!
About done with the fist one - and for my first time dealing with angles, I WISH you had explained the shapes a little better so I understood if it was like this - \___/ or /___/
Either way - I appreciate the video and it's turning out GORGEOUS.

Great simple explanation of what looks to be a complicated build. $30 of material can turn around and sell for $100+.
One tip to make things easier; set up stop blocks on either side of the blade for cutting the decorative leg grooves so there's no need to measure/mark and no chance of cutting in the wrong spot. Same thing for the top bevel. Just bump, chop,turn.. no brainer.
Also I know you're building this for the video, but there are 1" pocket hole screws with a yellow outdoor coating. Armor Tools makes them.
    Keep up the good work.

I've been seeing some oversized letters that have lights inside and an open front so you are seeing the lights I think the idea is more for rentals for weddings, graduation parties, stuff like that. Would love to see a build of something like that.

Does anyone know if there’s a good way to set a depth on a mitre saw that doesn’t have a depth stop?
Thanks for another awesome build Mr Peech!

built this in sketchup while buliding in real life, yes i like to over build stuff lol.. but i think the leg messurements are off. you cant be a quatuer inch from the 3 in inset and also be 1.75 in up from bottom that distance is 17 and the wall boards are 17.5.. am i missing something?
could it be the the wall boards arent actually 17.5?
After adjusting to keep your layout.
The wall boards need to be 16 1/2 not 17.5
Hope this helps a fellow ocd woodworkers.
    GREAT ORIGINAL POST THO

Hah, searched the comments to see if anyone else had this issue. I had already built it so just took my multi tool and took an inch off two sides (across from each other) to give me that half inch space to attach the bottom boards. Yes, wall boards should be 16 ½"

Same issue. I'm to the point of attaching the decorative trim and the lengths and the angles are all off. I'm guessing the legs need to be longer but I'm not sure by how much.

Did you find a fix for the decorative trim pieces fitting? I'm wondering if having the side panels shorter or the legs longer will make the decorative trim fit like they should@@eljefetx

Can you make one for a larger plant like a palm tree? They usually use a 27.5 gallon planter..
