The $10 Planter - Low Cost High Profit - Make Money Woodworking

  • Elegant herringbone planter for less than $10!?! Yes, the wood used in this beautiful planter box cost less than a single stick of quarter round! That's insane. And the 30" wide planter only cost $14! So we all have a problem right now with our woodworking business or side hustle... the price of lumber is out of control. Well, I designed another planter to help solve our problem. I call it my Herringbone picket planter. It can literally be made from 5 fence pickets or 7 for the wide one! The current price of a treated pine fence picket in my area is $1.88. And even better if you have access to used pickets!
    So you can build this planter for less than $10 in wood! And these planters aren't small. As far as what you can sell them for you'll have to research your area. The only ones I could find online were selling for around $180 for the smaller one!!!

    I really like this one. I'm pretty sure this will be my first project for my first year of my business plan. You have really been such a help to me as I move forward to creating a plan to create some additional income now and into retirement down the road. Manufacturing has been a big part of my life and utilizing jigs and fixtureing to build projects will make it both fun and efficient for me. I'm starting out simple and moving along from there. I hope you won't mind if I send some updates along the way as I turn a simple idea of mine into what I hope to be a fun(most important to me) and profitable venture
    Thank you, Mike

    Have been in the process of building this planter.
    Things I’ve come across:
    -When cutting your stained board pieces out, make sure the fence pickets you use (It’s either 3 or 4 out of the 5 total) are the same thickness. After I had sanded, stained them and eventually put the chevron pattern on, they were different heights coming off the frame. Which didn’t look quite right, still looked decent.
    -When I was squaring off the sides of the picket fences, I ended up cutting too much off. So some of my pieces were a little to short.
    -If you’re using the kreg jig pocket hole handheld (gun looking one) make sure you have the depth to 1/2”. I had drilled way to far and messed up some frame pieces.
    -I put some Danish oil on the finished product and man it looks so cool, all the colors pop and it is quite amazing.
    Overall, it was a great first project. I highly recommend trying this out with Matthews esty plans. Very easy to follow, but don’t necessarily count on this project to make you fast money. I only wish I had a miter saw, that definitely would have made it way faster. I had to cut all my pieces on the table saw, and that freaking took FOREVER.
    I’m proud of the way it turned out, and like Matthew said, every piece is it’s own. So true. I used a Cherry stain, espresso, dark walnut, and a lighter brown stain (forgot the name) and it looks amazing.

    I started watching your videos because one night on my lunch break I was perusing YT and one popped up. Since I am an LEO I decided to start making custom retirement flags. I've seen you mention furring strips several times and funny enough that's what I use for the flags. Matter of fact tonight a man I have worked with for the last decade got one. Those I can charge upwards of $120 a piece but your ideas for smaller things to fill the gaps between flag orders has given me a lot of ideas. I'm hoping I can make enough selling small things that I can drop one of my side jobs so I can spend more time at home with the family.

    One issue I keep facing with these builds is whether to cut “on the line” or “after the line”. With the 1/8” kerf of the blade those add up cutting after the line and I run out of enough material for the final piece as per the cut list. Cutting on the line means my first piece is 1/16” short and every one thereafter is 1/8th short of the stated length on the cut list. Maybe this is a dumb question but it’s dogging me brother. Help/advice seriously appreciated. Keep on keepin’ on 👍

    • @chrismarendish2323
      @chrismarendish2323 2 года назад +1

      I try to always cut on one side of the line. This means that my blade cut is constantly on the left side (covering the line from left to right) of the line. But one should always take into account the blade kerf like you said. You can also measure for each cut separately, but this will require a lot more time. Fences and stop blocks will keep cuts repetitive as well.

    • @alexreid4131
      @alexreid4131 2 года назад

      @@chrismarendish2323 roger that. I bought two of Matt’s plans so my question is specific to those plans. Cutting to the right (or left) of the line means there’s not enough material left on the pickets for what the plans show. But of a conundrum.

    Love the planters. Just finished my first one.. Lessons learned-When you assemble the panels, they overlap as much as an inch causing the herring bone pattern to be off center. When starting the pattern make sure the first set of boards is off center the correct amount and that the 45 degree angle is correct. Wipe off and glue that ozzes out on the finished. Dried glue is hard to get off and damages the stain. The holes Matthew added to attach two panels together will also screw the legs on from the back side but I had to cut the screws off because they don't make the correct length. I'm having issues with the top being too thin after planing. My cedar fence pickets aren't as thick so the tops have to be perfect to look good.

Thanks so much for the go do it attitude! I dismantled pallets for the slats and stringers, my planters will be made with 1/2" thick boards.

    I literally just made 2 of these but I put the herringbone pattern behind the center upright support and was still able to pull it off with 3 pickets. I also didn't think to stain the alternating boards in the pattern so it's a little harder to pick out the pattern from a distance but still pretty easy to see up close. Now for the guess. I think there are 328 screws left in the box.
