This may answer some of the questions: If you choose the FLAT CURVES option box, you can choose the color there AND you can also SET CURVE WIDTH, which will solidify the curves. I used .010 for curve width which looked fine.
followed all the instructions from the video as well as the link; it displays the text when I click 'create animation' but when I press play, the animation is erasing the words instead of writing.. don't know what went wrong
