- Have you ever felt like part of your creative self was hidden away, locked behind doubt or fear? If you're a picture book creator, I know that feeling well, and I want to share my journey to encourage you.
I'm Marijanel, an author, illustrator, and independent publisher of children’s picture books, and today, I'm introducing myself to the Picture Book Creators community by sharing the story of how I rediscovered my artistic calling after years of setbacks and self-doubt.
In this video, I open up about my journey and read from my journal-a piece that takes you back to how creativity has been woven into my life since childhood. I’ll share how storytelling, music, and visual arts shaped who I am today and the moments that nearly led me to abandon my creative side after disappointments in the children’s music industry.
But my story didn’t end there. Motherhood and discovering digital art became pivotal moments that reignited my passion and helped me unlock what I call my "creative vault." I’ll talk about confronting the doubts and lies that held me back and how I came to embrace childlike storytelling as a sacred calling.

Hearing your story comes at the perfect moment for me. I’m on the edge of trying to create a series of stories for children with special needs. And I have definitely been held back by fear, fear of failure, fear of people judging my work. But I need to find the courage to get my stories out because I can really relate to the calling, and knowing this is what I should be doing at this season of my life 💕 thank you 🙏
